Photoluminescence of SrTiO3: Influence of Particle Size and Morphology

Study of the decay B-s(0)->(DsDs(*))-D-(*)

We report a study of the decay B-s(0)->(DsDs(*))-D-(*) using a data sample corresponding to 1.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment in 2002-2006 during run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. One D-s((*)) meson was partially reconstructed in the decay D-s ->phi mu nu, and the other D-s((*)) meson was identified using the decay D-s ->phi pi where no attempt was made to distinguish D-s and D-s(*) states. For the branching fraction Br(B-s(0)->(DsDs(*))-D-(*)) we obtain a 90% C.L. range [0.002,0.080] and central value 0.039(-0.017)(+0.019)(stat)(-0.015)(+0.016)(syst). This was subsequently used to make the most precise estimate of the width difference Delta Gamma(CP)(s) in the B-s(0)-(B)over bar(s)(0) system: Delta Gamma(CP)(s)/Gamma(s)=0.079(-0.035)(+0.038)(stat)(-0.030)(+0.031)(syst).

Measurement of semileptonic branching fractions of B mesons to narrow D-** states - art. no. 1711803

Using the data accumulated in 2002-2004 with the D0 detector in proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, the branching fractions of the decays B ->(D) over bar (0)(1)(2420)mu(+)nu(mu)X and B ->(D) over bar (*0)(2)(2460)mu(+)nu(mu)X and their ratio have been measured: B (b) over bar -> B)xB(B -> (D) over bar (0)(1)mu(+)nu(mu)X)xB((D) over bar (0)(1)-> D(*-)pi(+))=[0.087 +/- 0.007(stat)+/- 0.014(syst)]%; B((b) over bar -> B)xB(B ->(D) over bar (*0)(2)mu(+)nu(mu)X)xB((D) over bar (*0)(2)-> D(*-)pi(+))=[0.035 +/- 0.007(stat)+/- 0.008(syst)]% and [B(B ->(D) over bar (*0)(2)mu(+)nu(mu)X)xB((D) over bar (*0)(2)-> D(*-)pi(+))]/[B(B ->(D) over bar (0)(1)mu(+)nu(mu)X)xB((D) over bar (0)(1)-> D(*-)pi(+))]=0.39 +/- 0.09(stat)+/- 0.12(syst), where the charge conjugated states are always implied.

Magnetic susceptibility of an exactly solvable anisotropic spin ladder system

We investigate the thermodynamics of an integrable spin ladder model which possesses a free parameter besides rung and leg couplings. The model is exactly solvable by means of the Bethe ansatz and exhibits a phase transition between a gapped and a gapless spin excitation spectrum. The magnetic susceptibility is obtained numerically and its dependence on the anisotropy parameter is determined. The spin gap obtained from the susceptibility curve and the one obtained from the Bethe ansatz equations are in very good agreement. Our results for the magnetic susceptibility fit well the experimental data for the organometallic compounds (5IAP)(2)CuBr4 . 2H(2)O (Landee C. P. et al., Phys. Rev. B, 63 (2001) 100402(R)) Cu-2(C5H12N2)(2)Cl-4 (Hayward C. A., Poilblanc D. and Levy L. P., Phys. Rev. B, 54 (1996) R12649, Chaboussant G. et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 19 ( 1997) 925; Phys. Rev. B, 55 ( 1997) 3046.) and (C5H12N)(2)CuBr4 (Watson B. C. et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 86 ( 2001) 5168) in the strong-coupling regime.

Introduction: The study of graft donor sites, whether from the anatomical, physiological or morphological point of view, has become a topic of current interest, due to the increasing number of patients needing facial bone reconstruction for various reasons. Purpose: In view of the need to constantly improve surgical techniques for autogenous bone graft harvesting, still considered the best choice for facial bone reconstruction, this paper describes an anatomical study on dry skulls in order to evaluate the average thickness of the parietal bone. Material and Methods: Measurements of this bone were taken with a goniometer, at four previously defined points, in the region that is often used as a donor site, in 49 dry skulls (98 parietal bones). The results were evaluated using the T test. Results: Thickness was measured at four predetermined points. The mean values (Point A = 4898mm, B = 4517mm, C = 6185mm, D = 4280mm) show that the bone can be even thinner than previously reported in the literature in other studies of the same nature. The largest bone thickness is in the medial and posterior region. Conclusion: A knowledge of these anatomical characteristics is helpful in preventing possible surgical complications, as well as making it safer for the surgeon to remove this graft and providing more information on whether or not to indicate this region as a bone graft donor site.

Mathematical notebook, and commonplace book, circa 1689-1769

Manuscript notebook, possibly kept by Harvard students, containing 17th century English transcriptions of arithmetic and geometry texts, one of which is dated 1689-1690; 18th century transcriptions from John Ward���s “The Young Mathematician’s Guide”; and notes on physics lectures delivered by John Winthrop, the Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard from 1738 to 1779. The notebook also contains 18th century reading notes on Henry VIII, Tudor succession, and English history from Daniel Neal’s “The History of the Puritans” and David Hume’s “History of England,” and notes on Ancient history, taken mainly from Charles Rollin’s “The Ancient History of the Egyptians, Carthaginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes and Persians, Macedonians and Grecians.” Additionally included are an excerpt from Plutarch’s “Lives” and transcriptions of three articles from “The Gentleman’s Magazine, and Historical Chronicle,” published in 1769: “A Critique on the Works of Ovid”; a book review of “A New Voyage to the West-Indies”; and “Genuine Anecdotes of Celebrated Writers, &.” The flyleaf contains the inscription “Semper boni aliquid operis facito ut diabolus te semper inveniat occupatum,” a variation on a quote of Saint Jerome that translates approximately as “Always good to do some work so that the devil may always find you occupied.” In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Harvard College undergraduates often copied academic texts and lecture notes into personal notebooks in place of printed textbooks. Winthrop used Ward���s textbook in his class, while the books of Hume, Neal, and Rollin were used in history courses taught at Harvard in the 18th century.
