During "Meteor"cruise 1965 the author collected 134 samples of surface sediments from the Iranian part of the Persian Gulf. Benthic Foraminifera populations have been analysed for determining their depth zonation. These data are supposed to allow detailed depth interpretation of Pleistocene sediments found in cores. In addition, the ecological information might be usefull to reconstruct the depositional environment of fossil sediments in similar shallow epicontinental seas. The investigation is published in two parts: the present part 1 contains the catalogue of species with short discussions of taxonomic problems, notes on the distribution within the Persian Gulf and 11 plates, partly with scanning electron micrographs. The results of the statistical analysis are given in data tables which include number of species, percentages of 2 (and 5) ranked species, standing crop and foraminiferal numbers. The author used "species groups" to avoid ambiguities with species requiring additional taxonomic studies. However, species numbers within these units are estimated to yield applicable diversity information. - A total of 52 species and 7 "species groups" were separated, 2 new species were described.

Possible genetic relationships between syn- and post-depositional processes and sediment microstructure were investigated. Samples from cores at Sites 646 and 647 of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 105 included examples of bottom current deposition (contourites), turbidity current deposition, consolidation, and diagenesis. Examination of nearly 200 micrographs of 14 samples from Site 646 and 13 samples from Site 647 leads to the conclusion that sedimentation processes do not appear to have an obvious influence on fabric. The effects of post-depositional processes, such as bioturbation, coring disturbance, and even remolding, appear to be less significant than one might expect as a result of the relatively coarse grain size of the sediments studied. Consolidation resulting from increased overburden stress results in increased particle alignment and compression of fabric elements with depth. The transition from open, random fabric in shallow samples to preferred orientation at depth represents the only change in these sediments that can be ascribed directly to a specific depositional or post-depositional process. Mineralogical variations, owing to changes in weathering processes and growth of authigenic/diagenetic minerals, also have a pronounced effect on sediment fabric.

Stable isotope analyses and scanning electron micrographs have been carried out on six planktonic forminifera species, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Globorotalia tumida, Sphaeroidinella dehiscens, Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerinoides sacculifer and Globigerinoides quadrilobatus from eleven box-cores taken at increasing depths in the equatorial Ontong-Java Plateau (Pacific). This allows us to describe the way dissolution affects the microstructures of the tests of the different species and to quantify the changes of isotopic composition. We may conclude that: 1) dissolution effects on test morphology and stable isotope compositions are species dependent, species with a similar habitat showing a similar trend; 2) the shallow water, thin-shelled species are the first to disappear: scanning electron microscope (SEM) work shows alteration of outer layers. Deep water, thick-shelled species are present in all samples: SEM work shows breakdown and disparition of inner layers; 3) for all species there is a similar trend towards increasing delta18O values with increasing water depths and increasing dissolution. This effect may be as high as 0.6 ? per thousand meters for Globorotalia tumida; 4) below the lysocline, around 3500 m, it appears that 13C/12C ratios slightly increase towards equilibrium values for thick shelled species: G. tumida, P. obliquiloculata and S. dehiscens. 14C dates and isotope stratigraphy of two box-cores show that all samples are recent in age, and exclude upward mixing of glacial deposits as an important factor.

Maleic anhydride (MA) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) were used as crosslinking agent and initiator respectively for blending starch and a biodegradable synthetic aliphatic polyester using reactive extrusion. Blends were characterized using dynamic mechanical and thermal analysis (DMTA). Optical micrographs of the blends revealed that in the optimized blend, starch was evenly dispersed in the polymer matrix. Optimized blends exhibited better tensile properties than the uncompatibilized blends. Xray photoelectron spectroscopy supported the proposed structure for the starch-polyester complex. Variation in the compositions of crosslinking agent and initiator had an impact on the properties and color of the blends.

We report for the first time an unusual ejaculatory mechanism in the short-beaked echidna in which each side of the bilaterally symmetrical, rosettelike glans penis is used alternately, with the other being shut down. This is unparalleled in mammals but is reminiscent of the use of hemipenes in squamate reptiles, providing further reproductive evidence of a sauropsidian lineage in the Monotremata. Further, we describe the occurrence of motile sperm bundles in ejaculated echidna semen and provide scanning electron micrographs of their morphology. Sperm bundling appears to confer increased sperm motility, which may provide the potential for sperm competition between males.

Promoted ignition tests and quench tests have been conducted and analysed for 3.2 mm aluminum rods in 99.995% oxygen. Tests have been conducted in oxygen pressures varying from 538 kPa to 773 kPa. Samples that self-extinguished or were quenched were selected for further analysis. The microstructure of the selected samples were analysed by electron microscopy, using energy dispersive spectrometry and electron back-scatter techniques, to identify and visualize, respectively, the species present. The grain structures of these samples were etched, viewed and photographed under polarized light by an optical microscope. From the micrographs produced by the post-test analysis, clearly defined boundaries between the oxide and the melted and resolidified metal have been observed. In both the melted and resolidified metal and the oxide layer, significant numbers of gas bubbles, solid inclusions and several diffuse oxide bubbles have been captured during the cooling process. It is concluded that convective movement is occurring within the molten drop and that analysis of quenched samples provides more useful information on the state of the burning droplet than samples allowed to cool slowly to room temperature. Recommendations are made regarding future investigations into aluminum burning, focusing on the transport of reactants through the liquid oxide layer.

The literature relating to the drying characteristics of pure liquid drops and particulate slurry drops has been reviewed. The experimental investigation was, therefore, divided into three parts: Pure water drops, Aqueous sodium sulphate decahydrate drops, and, Slurry drops from nine detergent formulations. The value of the constant,'Ψ, reported by Ranz and Marshall, was found to be temperature dependent. In the temperature range o 26.5≤T≤118.5°C,Ψ , for pure water drops, varied between 0.38 and 0.47. A revised correlation of the mass transfer coefficients is therefore proposed.  A mathematical model for estimating the variation of crust thickness, for aqueous sodium sulphate drops, with time is proposed: β = R _ {R3 - ( 1.5G/πCo ) ( ΔHD - ΔHU) Δ} 1/3 Experimental crust thickness evaluated from stereoscan micrographs showed good agreement with theoretical prediction. It has been shown that drying characteristics of detergent drops can be evaluated from the porosity:thickness ratio, {ε/\β}. Formulations having large {ε/β I-ratios dry better than those with smaller values. The agreement between the experimental and theoretical mass transfer coefficients shows, in addition to the above correlation, that the overall mass transfer coefficient can be predicted from the expression1/K = 1/K + β/DMε 1.5 The crust is the controlling resistance to transfer in particulate slurry drops. For aqueous sodium sulphate drops, the crust provides 64.2% of the total resistance while for detergents with thicker, but less porous crusts, the value is 97.5%.

The effect of growth conditions on both the appearance and the antigenic profile of cells of Enterococcus faecalis was investigated using electron micrographs of ruthenium red stained and sectioned cells and SDS-PAGE and blotting techniques respectively. Three specific antigens of molecular weights 73, 40 and 37 kdaltons were of particular interest being expressed most strongly after growth in serum. This medium was deemed to most closely mimic jn vjvo growth conditions reflecting an environment similar to that which the microorganisms would encounter during bacteraemia, preceding the colonisation of the endocardium and the development of infective endocarditis. The 40 and 37 kdalton antigens were shown by immunoqold labelling to be exposed on the surface of the cells although they did not appear to be connected with the fimbriae shown to exist on some of the E. faecalis cells examined by negative staining. The 73, 40 and 37 kdalton antigens were crudely purified using sarkosyl and ammonium sulphate precipitation, and used as the basis of a serodiagnostic test for E. faecalis endocarditis using an ELISA system. This was tested in a blind trial and the success rates were 94% for positives, 90% for negatives with endocarditis caused by other organisms and 80% for E. faecalis infections other than endocarditis. The binding of E.faecalis cells to the serum proteins fibronectin and albumin was investigated using 125I labelled proteins, followed by Scatchard analysis. This showed that· E.faecalis cells do loosely bind large amounts of both of these proteins, thus surely affecting the way in which the host's immune system perceives the cells. The E.faecalis receptor for fibronectin was partially characterised and appeared to involve protein and/or carbohydrate containing components. but did not involve LTA or the 40 and 37 kdalton species specific antigens.

Some aspects of fatigue failure in rubbers have been examined. Scanning electron micrographs of the surface exposed by the failure confirm the incremental, crack-propagation nature, of the fatigue process. Many other features of the failure surface have been identified and related to this process. The complicating effect of a reinforcing filler has also been investigated. The fatigue resistance of rubber test-pieces deformed in simple tension was measured as a function of frequency and temperature. This showed that an increase in frequency was equivalent to a decrease in temperature; for an amorphous unfilled rubber the time and temperature effects of crystallisation and fillers on the validity of this transformation is considered. This transformation indicates that hysteresis plays an important part in the fatigue process. Torsional pendulum measurements were used to demonstrate the dependence of the fatigue life on the mechanical damping. An apparatus was developed to measure the hysteresial energy loss directly at deformations, rates of deformation and temperatures consistent with a typical fatigue test. Measurements made with this apparatus are compared with fatigue values and a quantitative relationship is suggested describing fatigue, in terms of the energy lost per unit energy input in a cycle of a fatigue test.

Envekadea metzeltinii sp. nov. is described from periphyton assemblages in the subtropical karstic wetlands of the Florida Everglades, U.S.A. The morphology of the new diatom species is documented by light and scanning electron micrographs and discussed in detail, including comparisons with related species in the genera Envekadea, Caloneis, andNavicula. The new species is characterized by a linear valve outline, a sigmoid raphe course, broad variability in areola shapes and sizes, and two clearly raised axial costae. Apart from the type locality in Florida, the species was observed from similar wetlands in the Yucatan, Mexico. Notes on its ecology and distribution are added. Based on the morphology of the most similar species, Navicula palestinae, the latter is transferred to the genus Envekadea.

The preparation of nanostructured materials using natural clays as support, has been studied in literature under the same are found in nature and consequently, have a low price. Generally, clays serve as supports for metal oxides by increasing the number of active sites present on the surface and can be applied for various purposes such as adsorption, catalysis and photocatalysis. Some of the materials that are currently highlighted are niobium compounds, in particular, its oxides, by its characteristics such as high acidity, rigidity, water insolubility, oxidative and photocatalytic properties. In this scenario, the study aimed preparing a composite material oxyhydroxide niobium (NbO2OH) / sodium vermiculite clay and evaluate its effectiveness with respect to the natural clay (V0) and NbO2OH. The composite was prepared by precipitation-deposition method and then characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDS), thermal analysis (TG/DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption-desorption and investigation of distribution of load. The application of the material NbO2OH/V0 was divided in two steps: first through oxidation and adsorption methods, and second through photocatalytic activity using solar irradiation. Studies of adsorption, oxidation and photocatalytic oxidation monitored the percentage of color removal from the dye methylene blue (MB) by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The XRD showed a decrease in reflection d (001) clay after modification; the FTIR indicated the presence of both the clay when the oxyhydroxide niobium to present bands in 1003 cm-1 related to Si-O stretching bands and 800 cm-1 to the Nb-O stretching. The presence of niobium was also confirmed by EDS indicated that 17 % by mass amount of the metal. Thermal analysis showed thermal stability of the composite at 217 °C and micrographs showed that there was a decrease in particle size. The investigation of the surface charge of NbO2OH/V0 found that the material exhibits a heterogeneous surface with average low and high negative charges. Adsorption tests showed that the composite NbO2OH/V0 higher adsorption capacity to remove 56 % of AM, while the material removed from V0 only 13 % showed no NbO2OH and adsorptive capacity due to the formation of H-aggregates. The percent removal of dye color for the oxidation tests showed little difference from the adsorption, being 18 and 66 % removal of dye color for V0 and NbO2OH/V0 respectively. The NbO2OH/V0 material shows excellent photocatalytic activity managing to remove just 95,5 % in 180 minutes of the color of MB compared to 41,4 % and 82,2 % of V0 the NbO2OH, proving the formation of a new composite with distinct properties of its precursors.

Clays are materials with specific properties that make them promising for various studies. In this work we used the vermiculite clay as support for iron compounds, in order to obtain promising materials for application in the heterogeneous type photo-Fenton process. In all, the study included six solid, starting from the vermiculite (V0) was obtained calcined vermiculite (V0-C), the mixed material (V0/β-FeOOH) formed by vermiculite more akaganeite, exchanged vermiculite (v0t-C), vermiculite impregnated Wet (V0u-C) and V0u-CL that is the solid obtained by impregnating with a back washing. The solids of the study had their physical and chemical characteristics investigated by the following characterization techniques: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), UV-Vis by Diffuse Reflectance (DR UV-Vis), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The V0 material showed three distinct phases, which are the very vermiculite, hidrobiotite and biotite, the last two phases are part of the geological of formation process vermiculite. The solids obtained after the modification showed an increase in the amount of iron present in the clay, these being quantities important for application in photocatalysis. The micrographs and EDS data, show that after treatment of addition of the metal , the iron was intercalary in structure of vermiculite for solid V0t-C and V0u-C, however, this did not occur with mixed material. In the photoFenton process, was observed a maximum removal of 88.8% of the dye methylene blue coloring for the catalyst V0/β-FeOOH, while for the other solids was obtained values between 76.8 and 62.6%, compared to 37.8% of discoloration without the presence of catalyst. Therefore, it is concluded that the vermiculite clay presents as a good catalyst and iron support for the, beyond of presenting a low cost because of its high abundance.

The Sustainability has been evidence in the world today; organizations have sought to be more and more into this philosophy in their processes, whether products or attendance. In the present work were manufactured eco-composites with animal fiber (dog wool) that is currently discarded into the environment without any use. Project phases consisted on the initial treatment of fibers with alkaline solution (NaOH) at 0.05 mols for removal of impurities, developing methods to convert these fibers (reinforcement) blended with castor oil polyurethane (matrix) in eco-composite with different proportions (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%). Fiber properties were evaluated by analysis of SEM, XRD and FTIR. The composites were produced by compression molding with dimensions 30x30x1cm. For characterization of the composites the following tests were performed: mechanical (tensile, compression, shore hardness A) according the standards and testing water absorption, moisture regain and biodegradation. The analysis of thermal properties on fibers and composites were by TG, DSC, thermal conductivity, resistivity, heat capacity and thermal resistance. Analyzing the results of these tests, it was observed that the composite reinforced with 20% showed a better thermal performance between others composites and dimensional stability when compared to commercial thermal insulation. Also is possible to observe a balance in moisture absorption of the composite being shown with its higher absorption rate in this same sample (20%). The micrographs show the fiber interaction regions with polyurethane to fill the empty spaces. In hardness and compression testing can identify that with increasing percentage of the fiber material acquires a greater stiffness by making a higher voltage is used for forming necessary. So by the tests performed in eco-composites, the highest percentage of fiber used as reinforcement in their composition obtained a better performance compared to the remaining eco-composites, reaching values very close to the PU.

The cobalt-manganese ferrites (Co1¡xMnxFe2O4 and Co1,2Fe1,8¡xMnxO4) has a mixed structure of spinel type and it has been regarded as one of candidates for petitive wide variety of applications in devices from ultrasonic generation and detection, sensors, transformers, as well as in medical industry. Ferrites cobalt-manganese nanostructured were produced via mechanical alloying with subsequent heat treatment and were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy and magnetization. Samples of Co1¡xMnxFe2O4 and Co1,2Fe1,8¡xMnxO4 were obtained from the precursor powders Fe3O4, Co3O4 and Mn3O4 which were stoichiometrically mixed and ground by 10h and heat treated at 900°C for 2h. The diffraction confirmed the formation of the pure nanocrystalline phases to series Co1,2Fe1,8¡xMnxO4 with an average diameter of about 94nm. It was found that the lattice parameter increases with the substitution of Fe3Å by Mn3Å. The x-ray fluorescence revealed that the portions of metals in samples were close to the nominal stoichiometric compositions. The microstructural features observed in micrographs showed that the particles formed show very different morphology and particle size. The magnetic hysteresis measurements performed at low temperature showed that the saturation magnetization and remanence increased as the concentration of manganese, while the coercive field decreased. The anisotropy constant (Ke f ), was estimated from the data adjustments the law of approaching saturation. It was found that the anisotropy decreases substantially with the substitution of Fe by Mn.
