ABSTRACT Currently and for over 25 years now, the Method of "Prediction of Subsurface Drainage Main Directions in Anisotropic Massifs" has been successfully used in various karstic terrains such as: limestone, gypsum, quartzite, slate, granite and criokarst (karst in the glacier ice). However, until now, it had never been validated in volcanic terrains where is focused this thesis entitled Validation of such Method in the Anaga Massif Volcanic Terrains, in Tenerife. This mathematical method is essentially "predict and quantify" the main directions of groundwater turbulent drainage in anisotropic massifs. This is based on field study of tectoglifes or permanent deformation of the massif, printed on the rocks as a result of previous tectonic stresses. Therefore it is possible to use in anisotropic rock mathematical model instead of the isotropic laminar flow mathematical models defined by Darcy (1856). The Anaga Massif have been chosen to validate the method, because it presents the greatest anisotropy in Tenerife Island, shaped by a large and extensive network of dikes of various shapes and sizes that belong to the family of NE structural axis dikes of the island. An exhaustive field work was carried out in such massif, with 331 collected data (basaltic dikes) and the method was applied, in order to define the preferred direction of the underground drainage in the Anaga massif. This obtained prediction was contrasted to the reality of the drainage in the area, known thanks to the existence of five galleries located in the work area, from which information about their springs was available. In all cases it was possible to demonstrate the fitness of the prediction obtained by the method. It had been demonstrated that a greater geological or geotectonic chaos enhances a better prediction of the method, that predicted very satisfactory results for those water galleries which directions were perpendicular to that predicted by the Method as a drainage preferential direction, for the zone where was located each gallery. No doubt that the validation of the use of the Method in the volcanic terrain of Tenerife, means a considerable change in the world of hydrogeology in this type of terrain. It is the only mathematical tool available to predict a successful drilling direction in advancing water galleries, what also leads to major savings in execution of the drilling works. Furthermore, the method leaves an important legacy to the Canary Islands society, because it opens many lines of work and research to generate a significant development in the world of volcanic hydrogeology.

In recent decades archaeological sites have been subject of many interventions. The application of conservation treatments, such us consolidation and protection ones by means of using, for instance, synthetic resins or organosilicic compounds, has been demonstrated inadequate in many cases, and even harmful for the heritage materials [1]. Evaluation studies should be a mandatory task, ideally before and after the intervention, but both tasks are complex and unusual in the case of archaeological heritage. Moreover, there is a general lack of knowledge in the mid and long term effects of these treatments, and how to act when these have resulted in deterioration of the original material. Remains of Roman Augusta Emerita, located in Merida (Spain), have gone through many interventions since the first archaeological campaign, in 1910. Some of them have demonstrated already to be harmful [2], others, more recent, must be evaluated in order to determine its effectiveness and durability, considering that many of these treatments are currently still applied. For this purpose a range of parameters has been measured such as color, surface hardness and roughness, mechanical or hydric properties, porosity, etc. on the original material (granite, marble and mortars mainly), and then the transformations of those same parameters analyzed after treatment, both in situ, in places where a intervention is documented, and in the laboratory, in samples. The study is being conducted both in the laboratory (Petrophysics Laboratory within IGEO) and in situ, on selected archaeological sites of Mérida (Theater and House of Mitreo). The comparison of results in untreated and treated areas of the site, and in treated-untreated samples, allows the distinction of variables that affect the interaction between products and stone material, issues such us effectiveness and durability of treatment and its validation or dismissal.

ABSTRACT This project aims to study the feasibility, both economic and technical, to the opening and operation of a granite quarry for use as an ornamental stone. For this we have selected an area of potential interest in Santa Olalla del Cala (Huelva) due to upwelling and tonality of these. In this area, it has made a study of the physical environment and an investigation into the types of rock on the surface comprising the Research Permit of the mining company Canteras Extremeñas SL. With all this, we have identified several areas of interest in which they could make the location of the quarry. From the technical point of view, we have defined the design of the quarry opting for a mining method combining the Finnish Method with the diamond wire cutting, projecting turn an area of the site for future temporal tip, taking into account the completion of an environmental impact, restoration plan, environmental monitoring plan, explosives and forecasting operations execution. The study of economic indicators shows that the project is profitable, yet it can be concluded that, both technically and economically, exploitation of mineral resources is viable.

Petrophysical properties, such as porosity, permeability, density or anisotropy de-termine the alterability of stone surfaces from archaeological sites, and therefore, the future preservation of the material. Others, like superficial roughness or color, may point out changes due to alteration processes, natural or man-induced, for ex-ample, by conservation treatments. The application of conservation treatments may vary some of these properties forcing the stone surface to a re-adaptation to the new conditions, which could generate new processes of deterioration. In this study changes resulting from the application of consolidating and hydrophobic treatments on stone materials from the Roman Theatre (marble and granite) and the Mitreo’s House (mural painting and mosaics), both archaeological sites from Merida (Spain), are analyzed. The use of portable field devices allows us to perform analyses both on site and in la-boratory, comparing treated and untreated samples. Treatments consisted of syn-thetic resins, consolidating (such as tetraethoxysilane TEOS) and hydrophobic products. Results confirm that undesirable changes may occur, with consequences ranging from purely aesthetic variations to physical, chemical and mechanical damages. This also permits us to check limitations in the use of these techniques for the evaluation of conservation treatments.

Different treatments (consolidation and water-repellent) were applied on samples of marble and granite from the Front stage of the Roman Theatre of Merida (Spain). The main goal is to study the effects of these treatments on archaeological stone material, by analyzing the surface changes. X-Ray Fluorescence and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy techniques, as well as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance have been used in order to study changes in the surface properties of the material, comparing treated and untreated specimens. The results confirm that silicon (Si) marker tracking allows the detection of applied treatments, increasing the peak signal in treated specimens. Furthermore, it is also possible to prove changes both within the pore system of the materialand in the distribution of surface water, resulting from the application of these products

ABSTRACT This thesis deals with the works in architecture from Antonio Vallejo Álvarez (b. 1903, g. 1928, d. 2002) whose long career enables us to concentrate on the evolution of the Spanish Architecture from the Academicism taking place at the beginning of XXth century , until the influence of the Modern Movement, taking also into account Racionalism. Antonio Vallejo was born in Almonacid de Zorita, a village in the province of Guadalajara small but unique because then Salto de Bolarque the crucial energy facility at the time also housed elements of classical architecture is built. His family sent him to study to Madrid in Escuelas Pías de San Fernando first, and then he attended lessons in the old Architecture school from Escritorios street belonging this last one to la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Once he finished his degree on Architecture, he worked on some historicist buildings with a great use of academicist stylemes which will be disappearing little by little, turning into “deco”. From this depurationn, whose traces can be found in 69, 73, 62 at Viriato street in Madrid, our architect ends up with a first racionalism in which balconies and flown bodies are suspended on a racionalist and orthogonal more and more rigid. At that time, he was also working in the Information Office in Madrid Town Hall together with Bernardo Giner de los Ríos y Fernando García Mercadal, among others. Later, he worked for Bernardo Giner de los Ríos in the School Building Offices until the breaking out of the Civil War. Under Salmón law, he founded a developer for buildings named Ar-In, where he developed a type of Architecture in which racionalism develops a magnificent expressive force, empowered by great terraced balconies with higienistain court. His great masterpieces at this time are the buildings from Narvaez opposite to Alcalde Sáinz de Baranda and the block in 75 Guzmán El Bueno, in Madrid. Civil war interrupts somehow his process and once the war is over, our architect works on the survival of racionalism by overlapping on large bodies of brick elevation occupying different floor plants, on a base of granite on the ground floor and a sort of portico framing the gaps in the attic by way of auction. On the Windows he se colocan embocaduras de caliza de diversas formas. This type of architecture, very much enjoyed at that time, will be sublimed as a great example of manierism in his great work such as the case of Agustinos Recoletos Residence and Santa Rita Church in Madrid. About fifteen years after the war, in the post-war era, Vallejo starts a process which we could call structuralist, as lons as the asumption from the situation of the structure in the building and the created module define his main features. Here, once our architect works with reinforce concrete in some of his buildings such as Residencial Bellas Vistas de Madrid, he improves his technique with steel strucutres such as the on in the school Sagrado Corazón in Guadalajara. It is also remarkable to speak about the province of Almería, where our architect arrives inmediately after the civil war, to get rid of the consequences of his loyalty to the Republic movement to which he collaborated until his death. He developed a great career as a builder there through Duarín SA, which was launched though his former enterprise. Similary as the way he worked in Madrid,he, also as an arquitect, did his work in Almería with less environmental pressure though, fact which contributed to the flourishing of the structuralist architecture, as an heir from his first racionalism, as it can be shown from buildings in streets such as 18 Juan Pérez, and 19 Paseo de la Estación.

Mineral surfaces were important during the emergence of life on Earth because the assembly of the necessary complex biomolecules by random collisions in dilute aqueous solutions is implausible. Most silicate mineral surfaces are hydrophilic and organophobic and unsuitable for catalytic reactions, but some silica-rich surfaces of partly dealuminated feldspars and zeolites are organophilic and potentially catalytic. Weathered alkali feldspar crystals from granitic rocks at Shap, north west England, contain abundant tubular etch pits, typically 0.4–0.6 μm wide, forming an orthogonal honeycomb network in a surface zone 50 μm thick, with 2–3 × 106 intersections per mm2 of crystal surface. Surviving metamorphic rocks demonstrate that granites and acidic surface water were present on the Earth’s surface by ∼3.8 Ga. By analogy with Shap granite, honeycombed feldspar has considerable potential as a natural catalytic surface for the start of biochemical evolution. Biomolecules should have become available by catalysis of amino acids, etc. The honeycomb would have provided access to various mineral inclusions in the feldspar, particularly apatite and oxides, which contain phosphorus and transition metals necessary for energetic life. The organized environment would have protected complex molecules from dispersion into dilute solutions, from hydrolysis, and from UV radiation. Sub-micrometer tubes in the honeycomb might have acted as rudimentary cell walls for proto-organisms, which ultimately evolved a lipid lid giving further shelter from the hostile outside environment. A lid would finally have become a complete cell wall permitting detachment and flotation in primordial “soup.” Etch features on weathered alkali feldspar from Shap match the shape of overlying soil bacteria.

Catalysis at organophilic silica-rich surfaces of zeolites and feldspars might generate replicating biopolymers from simple chemicals supplied by meteorites, volcanic gases, and other geological sources. Crystal–chemical modeling yielded packings for amino acids neatly encapsulated in 10-ring channels of the molecular sieve silicalite-ZSM-5-(mutinaite). Calculation of binding and activation energies for catalytic assembly into polymers is progressing for a chemical composition with one catalytic Al–OH site per 25 neutral Si tetrahedral sites. Internal channel intersections and external terminations provide special stereochemical features suitable for complex organic species. Polymer migration along nano/micrometer channels of ancient weathered feldspars, plus exploitation of phosphorus and various transition metals in entrapped apatite and other microminerals, might have generated complexes of replicating catalytic biomolecules, leading to primitive cellular organisms. The first cell wall might have been an internal mineral surface, from which the cell developed a protective biological cap emerging into a nutrient-rich “soup.” Ultimately, the biological cap might have expanded into a complete cell wall, allowing mobility and colonization of energy-rich challenging environments. Electron microscopy of honeycomb channels inside weathered feldspars of the Shap granite (northwest England) has revealed modern bacteria, perhaps indicative of Archean ones. All known early rocks were metamorphosed too highly during geologic time to permit simple survival of large-pore zeolites, honeycombed feldspar, and encapsulated species. Possible microscopic clues to the proposed mineral adsorbents/catalysts are discussed for planning of systematic study of black cherts from weakly metamorphosed Archaean sediments.

In this study, a digital CMOS camera was calibrated for use as a non-contact colorimeter for measuring the color of granite artworks. The low chroma values of the granite, which yield similar stimulation of the three color channels of the camera, proved to be the most challenging aspect of the task. The appropriate parameters for converting the device-dependent RGB color space into a device-independent color space were established. For this purpose, the color of a large number of Munsell samples (corresponding to the previously defined color gamut of granite) was measured with a digital camera and with a spectrophotometer (reference instrument). The color data were then compared using the CIELAB color formulae. The best correlations between measurements were obtained when the camera works to 10-bits and the spectrophotometric measures in SCI mode. Finally, the calibrated instrument was used successfully to measure the color of six commercial varieties of Spanish granite.

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental research to assess the residual mechanical properties of an ordinary concrete after fire. It was studied the influence of the cooling process, the maximum temperature that the concrete was subjected to and the loading level on the residual mechanical properties of calcareous and granite aggregate concretes. The properties studied were the residual compressive, tensile, splitting and flexural strengths and modulus of elasticity. Four levels of temperature; 20, 300, 500 and 700ºC; two loading levels (0.3f and 0.7fcd) and two cooling processes (cooling in the air and by water jet) were tested. The high temperatures attained and the sudden cooling down process on the concrete showed a negative effect on its residual mechanical properties. This effect was more notorious on the residual compression strength than in the other mechanical properties
