The photopolymerization of methyl, ethyl, butyl, and hexyl methacrylates in solution was studied. The effect of initial initiator and monomer concentrations on the time evolution of polymer concentration (M) over bar (n) and PDI was examined. The reversible chain addition and beta-scission, and primary radical termination steps were included in the mechanism along with the classical steps. The rate equations were derived using continuous distribution kinetics and solved numerically to fit the experimental data. The regressed rate coefficients compared well with the literature data. The model predicted the instantaneous increase in (M) over bar (n) and PDI to steady state values. The rate coefficients exhibited a linear increase with the size of alkyl chain of the alkyl methacrylates.

Crystal structure determination at room temperature [292 (2) K] of racemic 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diyl diethyl bis(carbonate), C26H22O6, showed that one of the terminal carbon-carbon bond lengths is very short [Csp(3)-Csp(3) = 1.327 (6) angstrom]. The reason for such a short bond length has been analysed by collecting data sets on the same crystal at 393, 150 and 90 K. The values of the corrected bond lengths clearly suggest that the shortening is mainly due to positional disorder at two sites, with minor perturbations arising as a result of thermal vibrations. The positional disorder has been resolved in the analysis of the 90 K data following the changes in the unit-cell parameters for the data sets at 150 and 90 K, which appear to be an artifact of a near centre of symmetry relationship between the two independent molecules in the space group P (1) over bar at these temperatures. Indeed, the unit cell at low temperature (150 and 90 K) is a supercell of the room-temperature unit cell.

The crystal structure of the N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediammonium dithiocyanate salt has been examined by experimental charge density studies from high-resolution X-ray diffraction data. The corresponding results are compared with multipole refinements, using theoretical structure factors obtained from a periodic density functional theory calculation at the B3LYP level with a 6-31G** basis set. The salt crystallizes in space group P (1) over bar and contains only a single ion pair with an inversion center in the cation. The salt has thus one unique classical N+-H center dot center dot center dot(NCS)(-) hydrogen bond but also has six other weaker interactions: four C-H center dot center dot center dot S, one C-H center dot center dot center dot N, and one C-H center dot center dot center dot C-pi. The nature of all these interactions has been examined topologically using Bader's quantum theory of "atoms in molecules" and all eight of the Koch-Popelier criteria. The experimental and theoretical approaches agree well and both show that the inter-ion interactions, even in this simplest of systems, play an integrated and complex role in the packing of the ions in the crystal. Electrostatic potential maps are derived from experimental charge densities. This is the first time such a system has been examined in detail by these methods.

We consider a dense, ad hoc wireless network confined to a small region, such that direct communication is possible between any pair of nodes. The physical communication model is that a receiver decodes the signal from a single transmitter, while treating all other signals as interference. Data packets are sent between source-destination pairs by multihop relaying. We assume that nodes self-organise into a multihop network such that all hops are of length d meters, where d is a design parameter. There is a contention based multiaccess scheme, and it is assumed that every node always has data to send, either originated from it or a transit packet (saturation assumption). In this scenario, we seek to maximize a measure of the transport capacity of the network (measured in bit-meters per second) over power controls (in a fading environment) and over the hop distance d, subject to an average power constraint. We first argue that for a dense collection of nodes confined to a small region, single cell operation is efficient for single user decoding transceivers. Then, operating the dense ad hoc network (described above) as a single cell, we study the optimal hop length and power control that maximizes the transport capacity for a given network power constraint. More specifically, for a fading channel and for a fixed transmission time strategy (akin to the IEEE 802.11 TXOP), we find that there exists an intrinsic aggregate bit rate (Theta(opt) bits per second, depending on the contention mechanism and the channel fading characteristics) carried by the network, when operating at the optimal hop length and power control. The optimal transport capacity is of the form d(opt)((P) over bar (t)) x Theta(opt) with d(opt) scaling as (P) over bar (1/eta)(t), where (P) over bar (t) is the available time average transmit power and eta is the path loss exponent. Under certain conditions on the fading distribution, we then provide a simple characterisation of the optimal operating point.

The crystal structure determination of the anhydrous form of any organic compound has been a challenge because of solvent incorporation during crystallization. A device to grow anhydrous forms of low melting organic solids based on vaporization and condensation by a gradient cooling technique has been designed. Its utility has been evaluated by growing anhydrous forms of ciprofloxacin, midazolam, and ofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin crystallizes in triclinic P (1) over bar, midazolam in monoclinic P2(1)/n, and ofloxacin in the C2/c space group. Comparative studies on the conformational features with solvated structure show no significant variation in the aromatic moieties.

Upper bounds at the weak scale are obtained for all lambda(ij)lambda(im) type product couplings of the scalar leptoquark model which may affect K-0 - (K) over bar (0), B-d - (B) over bar (d), and B-s - (B) over bar (s) mixing, as well as leptonic and semileptonic K and B decays. Constraints are obtained for both real and imaginary parts of the couplings. We also discuss the role of leptoquarks in explaining the anomalously large CP-violating phase in B-s - (B) over bar (s) mixing.

The high-temperature polymorphs of two photocatalytic materials, BiNbO4 and BiTaO4 were synthesized by the ceramic method. The crystal structures of these materials were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. BiNbO4 and BiTaO4 crystallize into the triclinic system P (1) over bar (No. 2), with a = 5.5376(4) angstrom, b = 7.6184(3) angstrom, c = 7.9324(36) angstrom, alpha = 102.565(3)degrees, beta = 90.143(2)degrees, gamma = 92.788 (4)degrees, V = 326.21 (5) angstrom(3). Z = 4 and a = 5.931(1) angstrom, b = 7.672(2) angstrom, c = 7.786(2) angstrom, alpha = 102.94 (3)degrees, beta = 90.04(3)degrees gamma = 93.53(3)degrees, V = 344.59(1) angstrom(3) and Z = 4, respectively. The structures along the c-axis, consist of layers of [Bi2O2] units separated by puckered sheets of (Nb/Ta)O-6 octahedra. Photocatalytic studies on the degradation of dyes indicate selectivity of BiNbO4 towards aromatics containing quinonic and azo functional groups

Thiosemicarbazones are having the ability to bind with metal and inhibit the enzyme ribonucleoside diphosphate reductase(RDR),an enzyme which is involved in the synthesis of DNA precursors in the mammalian cells. The title compound N-methyl-t-3-methyl-r-2, c-6-diphenylpiperidin-4-one thiosemicarbazone (NMMDPT), CCDC 218052, was prepared using Mannich reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction methods. The crystal data are:C20H24N4S; M.W= 352.49, triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, a = 8.467(2)angstrom, b = 10.228(2)angstrom, c = 12.249(2)angstrom; lpha=92.595(3)degrees, beta=104.173(3)degrees, gamma=13.628(3)degrees; V=930.0(3)angstrom(3), Z=2, D-cal=1.259Mgm(-3),mu=0.184mm(-1),lambda (MoKalpha)=0.71073 angstrom, final R1 and wR2 are 0.0470 and 0.1052, respectively. The piperidine rings adopt chair conformation. The planar phenyl rings are oriented equatorially at 2,6-positions of the piperidine ring. The molecular packing can be viewed as dimers held together by two N-H...S types of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Weak C-H...pi interactions also support the stability of the molecules in the crystal in addition to van der Waals forces. (c) 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

This study focuses on the temperature dependent optical band gap changes in the amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) films. The behavior of the amorphous GST thin films at low temperatures has been studied. The band gap increment of around 0.2 eV is observed at low temperature (4.2 K) compared to room temperature (300 K). The band gap changes associated with the temperature are completely reversible. The other optical parameters like Urbach energy and Tauc parameter (B-1/2) are studied for different temperatures and discussed. The observed changes in optical band gap (E-g) are fitting to Fan's one phonon approximation. Phonon energy ((h) over bar omega) corresponding to a frequency of 3.59 THz is derived from Fan's approximation, which is close to the reported value of 3.66 THz. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Eulytite compounds, A(3)Bi(XO4)(3) (X = P, A = Ca, Cd, Sr, Pb), belong to the noncentrosymmetric space group l (4) over bar 3d (No. 220) as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The crystals were grown from the melt-cool technique with considerable difficulty as the compounds melt incongruently at their melting temperature, except for the compound Pb3Bi(PO4)(3). The unit cell parameter a is 9.984(5), 9.8611(3), 10.2035(3), and 10.3722(2) angstrom for Ca3Bi(PO4)(3), Cd3Bi(PO4)(3), Sr3Bi(PO4)(3), and Pb3Bi(PO4)(3) respectively, and there are four formula units in the unit cell. The structure of Pb3Bi(VO4)(3), a unique eulytite with vanadium substitution, is compared with all these phosphorus substituted eulytites. The A(2+) and Bi3+ cations occupy the special position (16c) while the O anions occupy the general Wyckoff position (48e) in the crystal structure. Only one O position has been identified for Pb3Bi(PO4)(3) and Pb3Bi(VO4)(3), whereas two O atom sites were identified for Ca3Bi(PO4)(3), Cd3Bi(PO4)(3), and Sr3Bi(PO4)(3). The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra indicate large band gaps for all the phosphate eulytites while a lower band gap is observed for the vanadate eulytite. The feasibility of the use of these compounds in optoelectronic devices has been tested by measuring the second-harmonic generation (SHG) values which have been found to be of a magnitude equivalent to the commercially used KDP (KH2PO4).

We utilize top polarization in the process e(+)e(-) -> t (t) over bar at the International Linear Collider ( ILC) with transverse beam polarization to probe interactions of the scalar and tensor type beyond the standard model and to disentangle their individual contributions. Ninety percent confidence level limits on the interactions with realistic integrated luminosity are presented and are found to improve by an order of magnitude compared to the case when the spin of the top quark is not measured. Sensitivities of the order of a few times 10(-3) TeV-2 for real and imaginary parts of both scalar and tensor couplings at root s = 500 and 800 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb(-1) and completely polarized beams are shown to be possible. A powerful model-independent framework for inclusive measurements is employed to describe the spin-momentum correlations, and their C, P, and T properties are presented in a technical appendix.

Edge-sharing bioctahedral (ESBO) complexes [Ru-2(OMe)(O2CC6H4-p-X)3(1-MeIm)(4)](ClO4)2 (X = OMe (1a), Me (1b)) and [Ru-2(O2CC6H4-P-X)(4)(1-MeIm)(4)](ClO4)(2) (X = OMe (2a), Me (2b)) are prepared by reacting Ru2Cl(O(2)CR)(4) with 1-methylimidazole (1-MeIm) in methanol followed by treatment with NaClO4. Complex 2a and the PF6- salt (1a') of 1a have been structurally characterized. Crystal data for 1a.1.5MeCN. 0.5Et(2)O: triclinic, P (1) over bar, a = 13.125(2) Angstrom, b = 15.529(3) Angstrom, c 17.314(5) Angstrom, a; 67.03(2)degrees, beta 68.05(2)degrees, gamma = 81.38(1)degrees, V 3014(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 2. The complexes consist of a diruthenium(III) unit held by two monoatomic and two three-atom bridging ligands. The 1-MeIm ligands are at the terminal sites of the [Ru-2(mu-L)(eta(1):mu-O(2)CR)(eta(1):eta(1):mu-O(2)CR)(2)](2+) core having a Ru-Ru single bond (L = OMe or eta(1)-O(2)CR). The Ru-Ru distance and the Ru-O-Ru angle in the core of 1a' and 2a are 2.49 Angstrom and similar to 76 degrees. The complexes undergo one-electron oxidation and reduction processes in MeCN-0.1 M TBAP to form mixed-valence diruthenium species with Ru-Ru bonds of orders 1.5 and 0.5, respectively.

4-Styrylcoumarin crystallizes from chloroform and hexane mixture in two morphologically different modifications. The monoclinic form (needles, P2(1)/c) undergoes stereospecific photodimerization producing anti head-to-tail dimer across pyrone double bond, whereas the triclinic modification (prisms, P ($) over bar 1) dimerizes yielding photodimer of the same configuration, but across styrenic double bond. Single crystal X-ray analyses of the dimorphs reveal the packing differences permitting rationalization of the regio- and stereochemistry of the photoproducts. The significantly low dimer yield from the prismatic crystals is rationalized.

In the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, we consider possible ''phase turbulent'' regimes, where asymptotic correlations are controlled by phase fluctuations rather than by topological defects. Conjecturing that the decay of such correlations is governed by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) model of growing interfaces, we derive the following results: (1) A scaling ansatz implies that equal-time spatial correlations in 1d, 2d, and 3d decay like e(-Ax2 zeta), where A is a nonuniversal constant, and zeta=1/2 in 1d. (2) Temporal correlations decay as exp(-t(2 beta)h(t/L(z))), with the scaling law <(beta)over bar> = <(zeta)over bar>/z, where z = 3/2, 1.58..., and 1.66..., for d = 1,2, and 3 respectively. The scaling function h(y) approaches a constant as y --> 0, and behaves like y(2(beta-<(beta)over bar>)), for large y. If in 3d the associated KPZ model turns out to be in its weak-coupling (''smooth'') phase, then, instead of the above behavior, the CGLE exhibits rotating long-range order whose connected correlations decay like 1/x in space or 1/t(1/2) in time. (3) For system sizes, L, and times t respectively less than a crossover length, L(c), and time, t(c), correlations are governed by the free-field or Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) equation, rather than the KPZ model. In 1d, we find that L(c) is large: L(c) similar to 35,000; for L < L(c) we show numerical evidence for stretched exponential decay of temporal correlations with an exponent consistent with the EW value beta(EW)= 1/4.
