An essentially complete Paleogene record was recovered on the Central and Southern Kerguelen plateaus (55°-59°S) in a calcareous biofacies. Recovery deteriorated in the middle Eocene and down to the upper Paleocene because of the presence of interbedded cherts and chalks. The stratigraphic distribution of about 70 taxa of planktonic foraminifers recovered at Sites 747-749 is reported in this paper. Faunas exhibited fairly high diversity (approximately 20-25 species) in the early Eocene, followed by a gradual reduction in diversity in the middle Eocene. A brief incursion of tropical keeled morozovellids occurred near the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, similar to that recorded on the Maud Rise (ODP Sites 689 and 690). The high-latitude Paleogene zonal scheme developed for ODP Leg 113 sites has been adopted (with minor modifications) for the lower Eocene-Oligocene part of the Kerguelen Plateau record. A representative Oligocene (polarity chronozones 7-13) and late Eocene-late middle Eocene (questionably polarity chronozones 16-18) magnetostratigraphic record has allowed the calibration of several biostratigraphic datum levels to the standard Global Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) and established their essential synchrony between low and high latitudes.

Variations in primary productivity (PP) have been reconstructed in eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic parts of the Arabian Sea over the past 135 000 years applying principal component analysis and transfer function to planktic foraminiferal assemblages. Temporal variation in paleoproductivity is most pronounced in the mesotrophic northern (NAST site) and oligotrophic eastern (EAST site) Arabian Sea, and comparatively weak in the western eutrophic GeoB 3011-1 site in the upwelling area off Oman. Higher PP during interglacials (250-320 g C/m**2 year) than during cold stages (210-270 g C/m**2 year) at GeoB 3011-1 could have been caused by a strengthened upwelling during intensified summer monsoons and increased wind velocities. At NAST, during interglacials, PP is estimated to exceed g C/m**2 year 1, and during glacials to be as low as 140-180 g C/m**2 year. These fluctuations may result from a (1) varying impact of filaments that are associated to the Oman coastal upwelling, and (2) from open-ocean upwelling associated to the Findlater Jet. At EAST, highest productivity of about 380 g C/m**2 year is documented for the transition from isotope stage 5 to 4. We suggest that during isotope stages 2, 4, 5.2, the transition 5/4, and the end of stage 6, deep mixing of surface waters was caused by moderate to strong winter monsoons, and induced an injection of nutrients into the euphotic layer leading to enhanced primary production. The deepening of the mixed layer during these intervals is confirmed by an increased concentration of deep-dwelling planktic foraminiferal species. A high-productivity event in stage 3, displayed by estimated PP values, and by planktic foraminifera and radiolaria flux and accumulation rate, likely resulted from a combination of intensified SW monsoons with moderate to strong NE monsoons. Differential response of Globigerina bulloides, Globigerinita glutinata and mixed layer species to the availability of food is suited to subdivide productivity regimes on a temporal and spatial scale.

Water exchange between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea has been a major focus of the paleohydrography of the eastern Mediterranean. Glacial melt water released from the Black Sea is a potential factor in the formation of sapropel S1, an organic-rich sediment layer that accumulated during the Early Holocene. A high-resolution study done on sediments from the Marmara Sea, the gateway between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, sheds light on the Holocene exchange processes. Past sea surface temperature and sea surface salinity (SSS) were derived from stable oxygen isotope ratios (delta18O) of foraminiferal calcite and alkenone unsaturation ratios (Uk'37). Heavy delta18O values and high SSS in the Marmara Sea suggest absence of low salinity water from the Black Sea during S1. The comparison with data from the Levantine Basin and southern Aegean Sea outlines gradients of freshening in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, whereby the major sources of freshwater were closer to the Levantine Basin. It is thus concluded that the Black Sea was not a major freshwater source contributing to formation of S1. Given the absence of a low salinity layer, the deposition of organic-rich sediments corresponding to S1 in the Marmara Sea is likely the result of the global transgression and the concomitant re-organization of biogeochemical cycles, leading to enhanced productivity as shown by Globigerina bulloides.

Detailed 14C AMS data and isotope based stratigraphies from high-resolution paleoceanographic records for the last 22 ka of cores from the upper continental slope off NE Brazil reveal sedimentation rates of up to 100 cm per 1000 yr. Variations in the sediment composition relate to changes in the input of terrigenous material. The sedimentation is controlled by sea level and by the climatic regime of the hinterland. Short-term changes in the tropical wind field may act as a climatic trigger. The zonality of the SE trades was probably increased and the monsoonal activity over Africa reduced during the Younger Dryas period.

The stable carbon isotopic composition of the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides sacculifer and G. ruber (white) and sedimentary organic matter from the northern Gulf of Aqaba have been investigated to estimate changes in delta13CDIC in surface waters during the last 1,000 years. The high sedimentation rates at the core sites (about 54 cm/Kyear) provide high temporal resolution (~10 years). Recent sediments at the top of the cores reflect conditions younger than 1950. The delta13C records of the planktonic foraminifera from three multicores display similar trends, showing a uniform and consistent pattern before the 1750s, and a gradual decrease of approximately 0.63? over the last two centuries. This decrease seems to track the decrease of delta13CDIC in surface waters, which is mainly caused by the increase of anthropogenic input of 13C-depleted CO2 into the atmosphere. Similarly, a trend towards lighter values of the carbon isotopic composition of sedimentary organic matter (delta13Corg) during the last 200 years supports the interpretation obtained from the planktonic foraminiferal delta13C. Furthermore, direct measurements of seawater show that delta13C of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the northern Gulf of Aqaba has decreased by about 0.44 per mil during the period 1979-2000. The average annual decrease is 0.021 per mil, which is similar to that observed globally. The delta13C values of planktonic foraminifera combined with organic matter delta13C from marine sediments are good indicators for reconstructing past changes in atmospheric CO2 concentrations from the northern Gulf of Aqaba.

We use the fully coupled atmosphere-ocean three-dimensional model of intermediate complexity iLOVECLIM to simulate the climate and oxygen stable isotopic signal during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21 000 yr). By using a model that is able to explicitly simulate the sensor (d18O), results can be directly compared with data from climatic archives in the different realms. Our results indicate that iLOVECLIM reproduces well the main feature of the LGM climate in the atmospheric and oceanic components. The annual mean d18O in precipitation shows more depleted values in the northern and southern high latitudes during the LGM. The model reproduces very well the spatial gradient observed in ice core records over the Greenland ice-sheet. We observe a general pattern toward more enriched values for continental calcite d18O in the model at the LGM, in agreement with speleothem data. This can be explained by both a general atmospheric cooling in the tropical and subtropical regions and a reduction in precipitation as confirmed by reconstruction derived from pollens and plant macrofossils. Data-model comparison for sea surface temperature indicates that iLOVECLIM is capable to satisfyingly simulate the change in oceanic surface conditions between the LGM and present. Our data-model comparison for calcite d18O allows investigating the large discrepancies with respect to glacial temperatures recorded by different microfossil proxies in the North Atlantic region. The results argue for a trong mean annual cooling between the LGM and present (>6°C), supporting the foraminifera transfer function reconstruction but in disagreement with alkenones and dinocyst reconstructions. The data-model comparison also reveals that large positive calcite d18O anomaly in the Southern Ocean may be explained by an important cooling, although the driver of this pattern is unclear. We deduce a large positive d18Osw anomaly for the north Indian Ocean that contrasts with a large negative d18Osw anomaly in the China Sea between the LGM and present. This pattern may be linked to changes in the hydrological cycle over these regions. Our simulation of the deep ocean suggests that changes in d18Osw between the LGM and present are not spatially homogenous. This is supported by reconstructions derived from pore fluids in deep-sea sediments. The model underestimates the deep ocean cooling thus biasing the comparison with benthic calcite d18O data. Nonetheless, our data-model comparison support a heterogeneous cooling of few degrees (2-4°C) in the LGM Ocean.

Stable isotopic values on planktonic foraminifera in a suite of cores from basins across the SE Baffin Shelf are used to extract a record of meltwater events during Termination I deglaciation. Resolution and Hatton basins lie on the SE Baffin Shelf at water depths > 500 m, seaward of major conduits for ice drainage from the eastern sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS). Accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dates are used to constrain our chronology of events in ten cores. In Resolution Basin, three cores have 14C AMS dates on foraminifera of > 20 ka at their bases; whereas Hatton Basin cores terminate in sediments < 13 kyr. Sedimentation rates varied between 0.1 to 4.5 m/ka. Stable oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios were obtained on 146 samples of the planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (Ehrenberg) sinistral, from seven of the ten cores. No evidence was found to indicate that test morphology or size affected delta18O. Between 7 and 13.5 ka the surface water on the shelf was on average 1 per mil lower than the open ocean signal. Significant temporal variations were found in both delta18O and delta13C. Evidence for significant low delta18O events occurred between 13 and 8 ka. The delta13C record from the planktonic foraminifera suggests a threefold division of events between 13 and 7 ka, with positive values between 10.8 and 13.0 ka, negative values between 9 and 10.8 ka, and positive values from 7 to 9 ka. The delta18O data suggest the presence of meltwater on the shelf some 3,000 years prior to the first late glacial dates on terrestrial deglaciation (at circa 10.4 ka). "Hudson Strait must be the real key to the importance of the calving process during deglaciation, because it is potentially the largest marine outlet for the Laurentide Ice Sheet and because it leads into the very center of the ice sheet.....the rates of calving through Hudson Strait during the period of initial ?18O rise unfortunately are unknown." During most of the vegetation season from late May to early September large-sized diatom alga Proboscia alata forms local patches with high abundances and biomasses in different oceanographic domains of the eastern Bering Sea shelf. For 0-25 m layer average abundance and biomass of species in these patches are 700000 cells/l and 5 g/m**3 (wet weight), while corresponding estimates for the layer of maximal species concentrations are 40000000 cells/l and 38 g/m**3 (wet weight) or 1.6 g C/m**3. These levels of abundance and biomass are typical for the spring diatom bloom in the region. Outbursts of P. alata mass development are important for the carbon cycle in the pelagic zone of the shelf area in the summer season. The paradox of P. alata summertime blooms over the middle shelf lies in their occurrences against the background of the sharp seasonal pycnocline and deficiency in nutrients in the upper mixed layer. Duration of the outbursts in P. alata development is about two weeks and size of patches with high abundances can be as large as 200 km across. Degradation of the P. alata summertime outbursts may occur during 4-5 days. Rapid sinking of cells through the seasonal pycnocline results in intense transport of organic matter to bottom sediments. One of possible factors responsible for rapid degradation of the blooms is affect on the population by ectoparasitic flagellates. At terminal stages of the P. alata blooms percentage of infected cells can reach 70-99%.

We investigate the sensitivity of U/Ca, Mg/Ca, and Sr/Ca to changes in seawater [CO3[2-]] and temperature in calcite produced by the two planktonic foraminifera species, Orbulina universa and Globigerina bulloides, in laboratory culture experiments. Our results demonstrate that at constant temperature, U/Ca in O. universa decreases by 25 +/- 7% per 100 µmol [CO3[2-]] kg**-1, as seawater [CO3[2-]] increases from 110 to 470 µmol kg**-1. Results from G. bulloides suggest a similar relationship, but U/Ca is consistently offset by ~+40% at the same environmental [CO3[2-]]. In O. universa, U/Ca is insensitive to temperature between 15°C and 25°C. Applying the O. universa relationship to three U/Ca records from a related species, Globigerinoides sacculifer, we estimate that Caribbean and tropical Atlantic [CO3[2-]] was 110 +/- 70 µmol kg**-1 and 80 +/- 40 µmol kg**-1 higher, respectively, during the last glacial period relative to the Holocene. This result is consistent with estimates of the glacial-interglacial change in surface water [CO3[2-]] based on both modeling and on boron isotope pH estimates. In settings where the addition of U by diagenetic processes is not a factor, down-core records of foraminiferal U/Ca have potential to provide information about changes in the ocean's carbonate concentration.

Leg 101 of the Ocean Drilling Program recovered a large volume of Neogene sediments from sites in the Straits of Florida, Little Bahama Bank, and Exuma Sound. In varying amounts, shallow-water, platform-derived carbonate debris is nearly ubiquitous. Reworked planktonic foraminifers are common, especially in the Pliocene-Pleistocene. At Site 626 in the Straits of Florida, a sequence of Holocene to upper Oligocene sediments was recovered. The greatest Neogene hiatus at this site spans the latest Miocene through Pliocene. Below this, several minor hiatuses are present in a generally conformable sequence. From the Little Bahama Bank transect (Sites 627, 628, and 630), a nearly complete composite Neogene section was sampled. At Site 627, a major unconformity separates lowermost Miocene sediments from middle to upper Eocene sediments. A second major unconformity occurs at Site 628. Here, middle Miocene sediments lie above uppermost Oligocene deposits. Sites 632, 633, and 631 in Exuma Sound all bottomed in a thick, lower Pliocene section. The mid-Pliocene is very thin at Sites 633 and 631, while it is better represented at Site 632. Major unconformities at Sites 627 and 628 appear to correlate with periods of elevated sea level, which suggests that carbonate platform shedding may be greatest during this part of the sea-level cycles. One of the salient features of the Bahamas is the lack of any systematic temporal distribution of hiatuses. Only a brief hiatus in the late Pliocene may be regional. It appears that local platform-shedding events were of equal or greater importance in developing the stratigraphy of the Bahamas than regional or eustatic events.
