We propose a method to measure real-valued time series irreversibility which combines two different tools: the horizontal visibility algorithm and the Kullback-Leibler divergence. This method maps a time series to a directed network according to a geometric criterion. The degree of irreversibility of the series is then estimated by the Kullback-Leibler divergence (i.e. the distinguishability) between the in and out degree distributions of the associated graph. The method is computationally efficient and does not require any ad hoc symbolization process. We find that the method correctly distinguishes between reversible and irreversible stationary time series, including analytical and numerical studies of its performance for: (i) reversible stochastic processes (uncorrelated and Gaussian linearly correlated), (ii) irreversible stochastic processes (a discrete flashing ratchet in an asymmetric potential), (iii) reversible (conservative) and irreversible (dissipative) chaotic maps, and (iv) dissipative chaotic maps in the presence of noise. Two alternative graph functionals, the degree and the degree-degree distributions, can be used as the Kullback-Leibler divergence argument. The former is simpler and more intuitive and can be used as a benchmark, but in the case of an irreversible process with null net current, the degree-degree distribution has to be considered to identify the irreversible nature of the series

We present a combinatorial decision problem, inspired by the celebrated quiz show called Countdown, that involves the computation of a given target number T from a set of k randomly chosen integers along with a set of arithmetic operations. We find that the probability of winning the game evidences a threshold phenomenon that can be understood in the terms of an algorithmic phase transition as a function of the set size k. Numerical simulations show that such probability sharply transitions from zero to one at some critical value of the control parameter, hence separating the algorithm's parameter space in different phases. We also find that the system is maximally efficient close to the critical point. We derive analytical expressions that match the numerical results for finite size and permit us to extrapolate the behavior in the thermodynamic limit.

We analyze the properties of networks obtained from the trajectories of unimodal maps at the transi- tion to chaos via the horizontal visibility (HV) algorithm. We find that the network degrees fluctuate at all scales with amplitude that increases as the size of the network grows, and can be described by a spectrum of graph-theoretical generalized Lyapunov exponents. We further define an entropy growth rate that describes the amount of information created along paths in network space, and find that such en- tropy growth rate coincides with the spectrum of generalized graph-theoretical exponents, constituting a set of Pesin-like identities for the network.

The horizontal visibility algorithm was recently introduced as a mapping between time series and networks. The challenge lies in characterizing the structure of time series (and the processes that generated those series) using the powerful tools of graph theory. Recent works have shown that the visibility graphs inherit several degrees of correlations from their associated series, and therefore such graph theoretical characterization is in principle possible. However, both the mathematical grounding of this promising theory and its applications are in its infancy. Following this line, here we address the question of detecting hidden periodicity in series polluted with a certain amount of noise. We first put forward some generic properties of horizontal visibility graphs which allow us to define a (graph theoretical) noise reduction filter. Accordingly, we evaluate its performance for the task of calculating the period of noisy periodic signals, and compare our results with standard time domain (autocorrelation) methods. Finally, potentials, limitations and applications are discussed.

The computational study commented by Touchette opens the door to a desirable generalization of standard large deviation theory for special, though ubiquitous, correlations. We focus on three interrelated aspects: (i) numerical results strongly suggest that the standard exponential probability law is asymptotically replaced by a power-law dominant term; (ii) a subdominant term appears to reinforce the thermodynamically extensive entropic nature of q-generalized rate function; (iii) the correlations we discussed, correspond to Q -Gaussian distributions, differing from Lévy?s, except in the case of Cauchy?Lorentz distributions. Touchette has agreeably discussed point (i), but, unfortunately, points (ii) and (iii) escaped to his analysis. Claiming the absence of connection with q-exponentials is unjustified.

In this paper we present a continuum theory for large strain anisotropic elastoplasticity based on a decomposition of the modified plastic velocity gradient into energetic and dissipative parts. The theory includes the Armstrong and Frederick hardening rule as well as multilayer models as special cases even for large strain anisotropic elastoplasticity. Texture evolution may also be modelled by the formulation, which allows for a meaningful interpretation of the terms of the dissipation equation

A unified solution framework is presented for one-, two- or three-dimensional complex non-symmetric eigenvalue problems, respectively governing linear modal instability of incompressible fluid flows in rectangular domains having two, one or no homogeneous spatial directions. The solution algorithm is based on subspace iteration in which the spatial discretization matrix is formed, stored and inverted serially. Results delivered by spectral collocation based on the Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto (CGL) points and a suite of high-order finite-difference methods comprising the previously employed for this type of work Dispersion-Relation-Preserving (DRP) and Padé finite-difference schemes, as well as the Summationby- parts (SBP) and the new high-order finite-difference scheme of order q (FD-q) have been compared from the point of view of accuracy and efficiency in standard validation cases of temporal local and BiGlobal linear instability. The FD-q method has been found to significantly outperform all other finite difference schemes in solving classic linear local, BiGlobal, and TriGlobal eigenvalue problems, as regards both memory and CPU time requirements. Results shown in the present study disprove the paradigm that spectral methods are superior to finite difference methods in terms of computational cost, at equal accuracy, FD-q spatial discretization delivering a speedup of ð (10 4). Consequently, accurate solutions of the three-dimensional (TriGlobal) eigenvalue problems may be solved on typical desktop computers with modest computational effort.

The increase of orbital debris and the consequent proliferation of smaller objects through fragmentation are driving the need for mitigation strategies. The issue is how to deorbit the satellite with an efficient system that does not impair drastically the propellant budget of the satellite and, consequently, reduces its operating life. We have been investigating, in the framework of a European-Community-funded project, a passive system that makes use of an electrodynamics tether to deorbit a satellite through Lorentz forces. The deorbiting system will be carried by the satellite itself at launch and deployed from the satellite at the end of its life. From that moment onward the system operates passively without requiring any intervention from the satellite itself. The paper summarizes the results of the analysis carried out to show the deorbiting performance of the system starting from different orbital altitudes and inclinations for a reference satellite mass. Results can be easily scaled to other satellite masses. The results have been obtained by using a high-fidelity computer model that uses the latest environmental routines for magnetic field, ionospheric density, atmospheric density and a gravity field model. The tether dynamics is modelled by considering all the main aspects of a real system as the tether flexibility and its temperature-dependent electrical conductivity. Temperature variations are computed by including all the major external and internal input fluxes and the thermal flux emitted from the tether. The results shows that a relatively compact and light system can carry out the complete deorbit of a relatively large satellite in a time ranging from a month to less than a year starting from high LEO with the best performance occurring at low orbital inclinations.

The nonlinear streamwise growth of a spanwise periodic array of steady streaks in a flat plate boundary layer is numerically computed using the well known Reduced Navier- Stokes formulation. It is found that the flow configuration changes substantially when the amplitude of the streaks grows and the nonlinear effects come into play. The transversal motion (in the wall normal-spanwise plane), which is normally not considered, becomes non-negligible in the nonlinear regime, and it strongly distorts the streamwise velocity profiles, which end up being quite different from those predicted by the linear theory. We analyze in detail the resulting flow patterns for the nonlinearly saturated streaks, and compare them with available experimental results.

As it is defined in ATM 2000+ Strategy (Eurocontrol 2001), the mission of the Air Traffic Management (ATM) System is: “For all the phases of a flight, the ATM system should facilitate a safe, efficient, and expedite traffic flow, through the provision of adaptable ATM services that can be dimensioned in relation to the requirements of all the users and areas of the European air space. The ATM services should comply with the demand, be compatible, operate under uniform principles, respect the environment and satisfy the national security requirements.” The objective of this paper is to present a methodology designed to evaluate the status of the ATM system in terms of the relationship between the offered capacity and traffic demand, identifying weakness areas and proposing solutions. The first part of the methodology relates to the characterization and evaluation of the current system, while a second part proposes an approach to analyze the possible development limit. As part of the work, general criteria are established to define the framework in which the analysis and diagnostic methodology presented is placed. They are: the use of Air Traffic Control (ATC) sectors as analysis unit, the presence of network effects, the tactical focus, the relative character of the analysis, objectivity and a high level assessment that allows assumptions on the human and Communications, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) elements, considered as the typical high density air traffic resources. The steps followed by the methodology start with the definition of indicators and metrics, like the nominal criticality or the nominal efficiency of a sector; scenario characterization where the necessary data is collected; network effects analysis to study the relations among the constitutive elements of the ATC system; diagnostic by means of the “System Status Diagram”; analytical study of the ATC system development limit; and finally, formulation of conclusions and proposal for improvement. This methodology was employed by Aena (Spanish Airports Manager and Air Navigation Service Provider) and INECO (Spanish Transport Engineering Company) in the analysis of the Spanish ATM System in the frame of the Spanish airspace capacity sustainability program, although it could be applied elsewhere.

The range for airframe configurations available for UAS is as diverse as those used for manned aircraft and more since the commercial risk in trying unorthodox solutions is less for the UAS manufacturer. This is principally because the UAS airframes are usually much smaller than the manned aircraft and operators are less likely to have a bias against unconventional configurations. One of these unconventional configurations is the box-wing, which is an unconventional solution for the design of the new UAS generation. The existence of two wings separated in different planes that are, however, significantly close together, means that the aerodynamic analysis by theoretical or computational methods is a difficult task, due to the considerable interference existing. Considering the fact that the flight of most UAS takes place at low Reynolds numbers, it is necessary to study the aerodynamics of the box wing configuration by testing different models in a wind tunnel to be able to obtain reasonable results. In the present work, the study is enhanced by varying not only the sweepback angles of the two wings, but also their position along the models’ fuselage. Certain models have shown being more efficient than others, pointing out that certain relative positions of wing exists that can improve the aerodynamics efficiency of the box wing configuration.

La investigación tiene como objetivo establecer los valores organizacionales que afectan la productividad. El trabajo empírico se desarrolló en una muestra intencional de 142 PYMES del sector metalmecánico de Venezuela. Se consultó a un panel de expertos a fin de determinar la importancia relativa de estos valores en la productividad. Fueron sometidos a evaluación 22 valores. Los valores que resultaron más importantes son: Recurso Humano, Calidad, Trabajo en equipo, Responsabilidad y Seguridad. Se recomienda a la PYME metalmecánica Venezolana, orientar esfuerzos hacia la promoción y puesta en práctica de este Sistema de Valores, pues tan sólo Recurso Humano y Calidad son los valores que tienen una mayor presencia en sus filosofías de gestión. The research aims to establish the organizational values that affect productivity. The empirical work was conducted in a purposive sample of 142 SMEs in the engineering sector in Venezuela. We consulted a panel of experts to determine the relative importance of these values on productivity. Were evaluated at 22 values. The values that were most important are: Human Resources, Quality, Teamwork, Responsibility and Safety. SMEs are encouraged to Venezuelan metalworking, focusing efforts towards the promotion and implementation of this system of values, as only Human Resources and Quality are the values that are more active in their management philosophies.

The aim of this article is to define the technical specifications and to design the implementation of a line of tanks that would be used in the process of waxing and de-waxing large pieces. As it is based in a real case, it is also analyzed the process of dismantling the former installation that supported these functions. The origin of this project is due to a new rating for the maintenance of landing gears which makes the previous waxing line that was prepared to work on smaller aircraft?s pieces, no longer adequate to the current workflow and processes.

El artículo presenta el desarrollo de la biomasa en Chile, dentro del complejo marco energético existente en el país, el cual, aún no logra potenciar e incentivar el desarrollo de energías renovables y depende fuertemente de los combustibles fósiles, acrecentando el riesgo latente de sufrir una crisis energética, en el mediano plazo, producto de la paulatina incorporación de nuevas centrales generadoras de energías, que satisfagan la creciente demanda energética pronosticada. Este artículo aporta antecedentes a la situación energética existente en Chile, junto con un análisis al mercado eléctrico y a las normativas de éste, enfocadas a las energías renovables no convencionales (ERNC), para finalizar con el desarrollo de la biomasa en sus tres estados físicos, mencionando sus características, aplicaciones, procesos de conversión, ventajas y desventajas. Chile presenta una baja participación de las energías renovables en su mix energético, de las cuales, los biocombustibles sólidos y gaseosos, son utilizados principalmente para la generación de energía de baja potencia, mediante cogeneración y extracción y uso de biogás, respectivamente; mientras que los biocombustibles líquidos, están en fase de investigación y desarrollo de pilotos, por parte de varias entidades, para su producción industrial para el sector del transporte.

In this paper we present a spline-based hyperelastic model for incompressible transversely isotropic solids. The formulation is based on the Sussman-Bathe model for isotropic hyperelastic materials. We extend this model to transversely isotropic materials following a similar procedure. Our formulation is able to exactly represent the prescribed behavior for isotropic hyperelastic solids, recovering the Sussman-Bathe model, and to exactly or closely approximate the prescribed behavior for transversely isotropic solids. We have employed our formulation to predict, very accurately, the experimental results of Diani et al. for a transversely isotropic hyperelastic nonlinear material.
