Power system engineers face a double challenge: to operate electric power systems within narrow stability and security margins, and to maintain high reliability. There is an acute need to better understand the dynamic nature of power systems in order to be prepared for critical situations as they arise. Innovative measurement tools, such as phasor measurement units, can capture not only the slow variation of the voltages and currents but also the underlying oscillations in a power system. Such dynamic data accessibility provides us a strong motivation and a useful tool to explore dynamic-data driven applications in power systems. To fulfill this goal, this dissertation focuses on the following three areas: Developing accurate dynamic load models and updating variable parameters based on the measurement data, applying advanced nonlinear filtering concepts and technologies to real-time identification of power system models, and addressing computational issues by implementing the balanced truncation method. By obtaining more realistic system models, together with timely updated parameters and stochastic influence consideration, we can have an accurate portrait of the ongoing phenomena in an electrical power system. Hence we can further improve state estimation, stability analysis and real-time operation.

The development of accurate modeling techniques for nanoscale thermal transport is an active area of research. Modern day nanoscale devices have length scales of tens of nanometers and are prone to overheating, which reduces device performance and lifetime. Therefore, accurate temperature profiles are needed to predict the reliability of nanoscale devices. The majority of models that appear in the literature obtain temperature profiles through the solution of the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). These models often make simplifying assumptions about the nature of the quantized energy carriers (phonons). Additionally, most previous work has focused on simulation of planar two dimensional structures. This thesis presents a method which captures the full anisotropy of the Brillouin zone within a three dimensional solution to the BTE. The anisotropy of the Brillouin zone is captured by solving the BTE for all vibrational modes allowed by the Born Von-Karman boundary conditions.

Vocal differentiation is widely documented in birds and mammals but has been poorly investigated in other vertebrates, including fish, which represent the oldest extant vertebrate group. Neural circuitry controlling vocal behaviour is thought to have evolved from conserved brain areas that originated in fish, making this taxon key to understanding the evolution and development of the vertebrate vocal-auditory systems. This study examines ontogenetic changes in the vocal repertoire and whether vocal differentiation parallels auditory development in the Lusitanian toadfish Halobatrachus didactylus (Batrachoididae). This species exhibits a complex acoustic repertoire and is vocally active during early development. Vocalisations were recorded during social interactions for four size groups (fry: <2 cm; small juveniles: 2-4 cm; large juveniles: 5-7 cm; adults >25 cm, standard length). Auditory sensitivity of juveniles and adults was determined based on evoked potentials recorded from the inner ear saccule in response to pure tones of 75-945 Hz. We show an ontogenetic increment in the vocal repertoire from simple broadband-pulsed 'grunts' that later differentiate into four distinct vocalisations, including low-frequency amplitude-modulated 'boatwhistles'. Whereas fry emitted mostly single grunts, large juveniles exhibited vocalisations similar to the adult vocal repertoire. Saccular sensitivity revealed a three-fold enhancement at most frequencies tested from small to large juveniles; however, large juveniles were similar in sensitivity to adults. We provide the first clear evidence of ontogenetic vocal differentiation in fish, as previously described for higher vertebrates. Our results suggest a parallel development between the vocal motor pathway and the peripheral auditory system for acoustic social communication in fish.

Graphene, a remarkable 2D material, has attracted immense attention for its unique physical properties that make it ideal for a myriad of applications from electronics to biology. Fundamental to many such applications is the interaction of graphene with water, necessitating an understanding of wetting of graphene. Here, molecular dynamics simulations have been employed to understand two fundamental issues of water drop wetting on graphene: (a) the dynamics of graphene wetting and (b) wetting of graphene nanostructures. The first problem unravels that the wetting dynamics of nanodrops on graphene are exactly the same as on standard, non-2D (or non-layered) solids – this is an extremely important finding given the significant difference in the wetting statics of graphene with respect to standard solids stemming from graphene’s wetting translucency effect. This same effect, as shown in the second problem, interplays with roughness introduced by nanostructures to trigger graphene superhydrophobicity following a hitherto unknown route.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease occurring within the artery wall. A crucial step in atherogenesis is the infiltration and retention of monocytes into the subendothelial space of large arteries induced by chemokines and growth factors. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) regulates angiogenesis and reduces vascular permeability and has also 15 been reported to promote monocyte migration in vitro. We investigated the role of Ang-1 in atherosclerosis-prone apolipoprotein-E (Apo-E) knockout mouse. Apo-E knockout (Apo-E-/-) mice fed a western or normal chow diet received a single iv injection of adenovirus encoding Ang-1 or control vector. Adenovirus-mediated systemic expression of Ang-1 induced a significant increase in early atherosclerotic lesion size and monocyte/macrophage accumulation compared with control animals receiving empty vector. Ang-1 significantly increased plasma MCP-1 and VEGF levels as measured by ELISA. FACS analysis showed that Ang-1 selectively increased inflammatory Gr1þmonocytes in the circulation, while the cell-surface 25 expression of CD11b, which mediates monocyte emigration, was significantly reduced. Ang-1 specifically increases circulating Gr1þinflammatory monocytes and increases monocyte/macrophage retention in atherosclerotic plaques, thereby contributing to development of atherosclerosis.
