First, the direct and indirect electrochemical oxidation of ammonia has been studied by cyclic voltammetry at glassy carbon electrodes in propylene carbonate. In the case of the indirect oxidation of ammonia, its analytical utility of indirect for ammonia sensing was examined in the range from 10 and 100 ppm by measuring the peak current of new wave resulting from reaction between ammonia and hydroquinone, as function of ammonia concentration, giving a sensitivity 1.29 x 10(-7) A ppm(-1) (r(2)=0.999) and limit-of-detection 5 ppm ammonia. Further, the direct oxidation of ammonia has been investigated in several room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), namely 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C(4)mim] [BF4]), 1-butyl-3-methylimiclazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate ([C4mim] [OTf]), 1-Ethyl -3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim] [NTf2]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(tritluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C4mim] [NTf2]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4mim] [PF6]) on a 10 put diameter Pt microdisk electrode. In four of the RTILs studied, the cyclic voltammetric analysis suggests that ammonia is initially oxidized to nitrogen, N-2, and protons, which are transferred to an ammonia molecule, forming NH4+ via the protonation of the anion(s) (A(-)). However, in [C4mim] [PF6], the protonated anion was formed first, followed by NH4+. In all five RTILs, both HA and NH4+ are reduced at the electrode surface, forming hydrogen gas, which is then oxidized. The analytical ability of this work has also been explored further, giving a limit-of-detection close to 50 ppm in [C(2)mim] [NTf2], [C(4)mim] [OTf], [C(4)mim] [BF4], with a sensitivity of ca. 6 x 10(-7) A ppm(-1) (r(2) = 0.999) for all three ionic liquids, showing that the limit of detection was ca. ten times larger than that in propylene carbonate since ammonia in propylene carbonate might be more soluble in comparison with RTILs when considering the higher viscosity of RTILs.

New ionic liquids containing ( 2- hydroxypropyl)- functionalized imidazolium cations have been synthesized by the atom- efficient, room temperature reaction of 1- methylimidazole with acid and propylene oxide; the acid providing the anionic component of the resultant ionic liquids. The incorporation of the secondary hydroxyl- functionality in the cation causes some interesting modifications to the behavior of these ionic liquids, increasing hydrophilicity and resulting in the unprecedented formation of liquid - liquid biphases with acetone. The single crystal structure of 1-( 2- hydroxypropyl)- 3- methylimidazolium tetraphenylborate, prepared by metathesis of the corresponding chloride- containing ionic liquid, has also been determined.

The phase structure evolution of high impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) during molten-state annealing and its influence on crystallization behaviour were studied. An entirely different architecture of the IPC melt was observed after being annealed, and this architecture resulted in variations of the crystallization behaviour. In addition, it was found that the core-shell structure of the dispersed phase was completely destroyed and the sizes of the dispersed domains increased sharply after being annealed at 200 degrees C for 200 min. Through examination of the coarseness of the phase morphology using phase contrast microscopy (PCM), it was found that a co-continuous structure and an abnormal 'sea-island' structure generally appeared with an increase in annealing time. The original matrix PP component appeared as a dispersed phase, whereas the copolymer components formed a continuous 'sea-island' structure. This change is ascribed to the large tension induced by solidification at the phase interface and the great content difference between the components. When the temperature was reduced the structure reverted to its original form. With increasing annealing time, the spherulite profiles became more defined and the spherulite birefringence changed from vague to clear. Overall crystallization rates and nucleation densities decreased, but the spherulite radial growth rates remained almost constant, indicating that molten-state annealing mainly affects the nucleation ability of IPC, due to a coarsened microstructure and decreased interface area. Density, ?, viscosity, ?, and conductivity, s, measurements of binary mixtures containing the pyrrolidinium nitrate Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL) and propylene carbonate (PC), are determined at the atmospheric pressure as a function of the temperature from (283.15 to 353.15) K and within the whole composition range. The temperature dependence of both the viscosity and conductivity of each mixture exhibits a non-Arrhenius behaviour, but is correctly fitted by using the Vogel–Tamman–Fulcher (VTF) equation. In each case, the best-fit parameters, such as the pseudo activation energy, View the MathML source and ideal glass transition temperature, T0 are then extracted. The excess molar volumes VE, and viscosity deviations from the ideality, ??, of each investigated mixture were then deduced from the experimental results, as well as, their apparent molar volumes, V?, thermal expansion coefficients ap, and excess Gibbs free energies (?G*E) of activation of viscous flow. The VE, apE, ?? values are negative over the whole composition range for each studied temperature therein. According to the Walden rule, the ionicity of each mixture was then evaluated as a function of the temperature from (283.15 to 353.15) K and of the composition. Results have been then discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in this binary mixture.

A series of supramolecular aggregates were prepared using a poly(propylene oxide) poly(ethylene oxide) poly(propylene oxide) (PPO-PEO-PPO) block copolymer and beta- or alpha-cyclodextrins (CD). The combination of beta-CD and the copolymer yields inclusion complexes (IC) with polypseudorotaxane structures. These are formed by complexation of the PPO blocks with beta-CD molecules producing a powder precipitate with a certain crystallinity degree that can be evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). In contrast, when combining alpha-CD with the block copolymer, the observed effect is an increase in the viscosity of the mixtures, yielding fluid gels. Two cooperative effects come into play: the complexation of PEO blocks with alpha-CD and the hydrophobic interactions between PPO blocks in aqueous media. These two combined interactions lead to the formation of a macromoleculaf network. The resulting fluid gels were characterized using different techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry, and XRD measurements.

The phase behavior of two types of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) (PEO/PPO) copolymers in aqueous solutions was studied by light scattering, viscometry, and infrared spectroscopy. Both the reverse poloxamer (Pluronic 10R5) and the star type poloxamine (Tetronic 90R4) have practically the same PEO/PPO ratio with their hydrophobic blocks (PPO) located in the outer part. The temperature-composition phase diagrams show that both 10R5 and 90R4 tend to form aggregates in water. Up to four different phases can be detected in the case of Tetronic 90R4 for each temperature: unimers, random networks, micellar networks, and macrophase separation. Viscometric and infrared measurements complemented the results obtained by light scattering and visual inspection.

Different types of gels were prepared by combining poloxamines (Tetronic), i.e. poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) (PEO/PPO) octablock star copolymers, and cyclodextrins (CD). Two different poloxamines with the same molecular weight (ca. 7000) but different molecular architectures were used. For each of their four diblock arms, direct Tetronic 904 presents PEO outer blocks while in reverse Tetronic 90R4 the hydrophilic PEO blocks are the inner ones. These gels were prepared by combining alpha-CD and poloxamine aqueous solutions. The physicochemical properties of these systems depend on several factors such as the structure of the block copolymers and the Tetronic/alpha-CD ratio. These gels were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry and X-ray diffraction measurements. The 90R4 gels present a consistency that makes them suitable for sustained drug delivery. The resulting gels were easily eroded: these complexes were dismantled when placed in a large amount of water, so controlled release of entrapped large molecules such as proteins (Bovine Serum Albumin, BSA) is feasible and can be tuned by varying the copolymer/CD ratio.

This work provides a study of mixtures of the azepanium-based ionic liquid (IL) N-methyl, N-butyl-azepanium bis[(trifluoromethane) sulfonyl]imide (Azp14TFSI) and propylene carbonate (PC) as electrolyte components in electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). The considered mixtures' properties were then compared to the properties of mixtures of N-butyl, N-methylpyrrolidinium bis[(trifluoromethane) sulfonyl]imide (Pyr14TFSI) and PC in terms of viscosity, conductivity and electrochemical behavior. The mixtures' operative potentials were found to be comparable to each other, leading to operative voltages as high as 3.5 V, while retaining the low viscosities and high conductivities of PC based EDLC electrolytes.

Poly(o-toluidine) (PoT) and poly(o-toluidine co aniline) were prepared by using ammonium persulfate initiator, in the presence of 1M HCI. It was dried under different conditions: room temperature drying (48 h), oven drying (at 50°C for 12 h), or vacuum drying (under vacuum, at room temperature for 16 h). The dielectric properties, such as dielectric loss, conductivity, dielectric constant, dielectric heating coefficient, loss tangent, etc., were studied at microwave frequencies. A cavity perturbation technique was used for the study. The dielectric properties were found to be related to the frequency and drying conditions. Also, the copolymer showed better properties compared to PoT alone.
