Multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been prepared by pyrolysing tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the presence of nickelocene. Pyrolysis of the precursor mixture has been achieved at temperature as low as 600 degrees C. In this simple approach no carrier gas has been used. The yield of purified carbon nanotubes is found to be more than 65%. Characterization of the as-prepared and purified nanotubes are done by Xray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectra.

Nanorods of several oxides, with diameters in the range of 10-200 nm and lengths upto a few microns, have been prepared by templating against carbon nanotubes. The oxides include V2O5, WO3, MoO3 and Sb2O5 as well as metallic MoO2, RuO2 and IrO2. The nanorods tend to be single-crystalline structures. Nanotube structures have also been obtained in MoO3 and RuO2.

Pristine and long-chain functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were incorporated successfully in supramolecular organogels formed by an all-trans tri(p-phenylenevinylene) bis-aldoxime to give rise to new nanocomposites with interesting mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Variable-temperature UV-vis and fluorescence spectra reveal both pristine and functionalized SWNTs promote aggregation of the gelator molecules and result in quenching of the UV-vis and fluorescence intensity. Electron microscopy and confocal microscopy show the existence of a densely packed and directionally aligned fibrous network in the resulting nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the composites shows that incorporation of SWNTs increases the gel formation temperature. The DSC of the xerogels of 1-SWNT composites indicates formation of different thermotropic mesophases which is also evident from polarized optical microscopy. The reinforced aggregation of the gelators on SWNT doping was reflected in the mechanical properties of the composites. Rheology of the composites demonstrates the formation of a rigid and viscoelastic solid-like assembly on SWNT incorporation. The composites from gel-SWNTs were found to be semiconducting in nature and showed enhanced electrical conductivity compared to that of the native organogel. Upon irradiation with a near IR laser at 1064 nm for 5 min it was possible to selectively induce a gel-to-sol phase transition of the nanocomposites, while irradiation for even 30 min of the native organogel under identical conditions did not cause any gel-to-sol conversion.

In this letter, a closed-form analytical model for temperature-dependent longitudinal diffusive lattice thermal conductivity (kappa) of a metallic single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) has been addressed. Based on the Debye theory, the second-order three-phonon Umklapp, mass difference (MD), and boundary scatterings have been incorporated to formulate. in both low-and high-temperature regimes. It is proposed that. at low temperature (T) follows the T-3 law and is independent of the second-order three-phonon Umklapp and MD scatterings. The form factor due to MD scattering also plays a key role in the significant variation of. in addition to the SWCNT length. The present diameter-independent model of. agrees well with the available experimental data on suspended intrinsic metallic SWCNTs over a wide range of temperature and can be carried forward for electrothermal analyses of CNT-based interconnects.

Experiments have been carried out to optimize the yields of carbon nanotubes obtained by the arc-evaporation of graphite. Other types of carbon particles such as nanocrystalline graphite usually present along with the nanotubes are readily removed by heating the material in oxygen around 763 K. Clean nanotubes so obtained have been characterized by X-ray diffraction. The clean tubes are thermally more stable than graphite or fullerenes. The tips of carbon nanotubes are opened by reaction with oxygen, but more interestingly, when the oxygen produced by the decomposition of a metal oxide is used to open the tube tips, the metal formed in the process enters the nanotube. Electrical resistance of pressed pellets of clean tubes is not unlike that of graphite. Tunnelling conductance measurements on isolated tubes characterized by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy however show that the conductance gap increases with decreasing tube diameter.

The temperature and magnetic field dependence of conductivity has been used to probe the inter-tube transport in multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The scanning electron microscopy images show highly aligned and random distribution of MWNTs. The conductivity in aligned carbon nanotube (ACNT) and random carbon nanotube (RCNT) samples at low temperature follows T-1/2 (at T < 8 K) and T-3/4 (at T > 8 K) dependence in accordance with the weak localization and electron-electron (e-e) interaction model. The values of diffusion coefficient in ACNT and RCNT are 0.25 x 10(-2) and 0.71 x 10(-2) cm(2) s(-1), respectively, indicating that larger number of inter-tube junctions in later enhances the bulk transport. The positive magnetoconductance (MC) data in both samples show that the weak localization contribution is dominant. However, the saturation of MC at higher fields and lower temperatures indicate that e-e interaction is quite significant in RCNT. The T-3/4 and T-1/2 dependence of inelastic scattering length (l(in)) in ACNT and RCNT samples show that the inelastic e-e scattering is more important in aligned tubes. Carbon nanotubes containing small amounts of nitrogen are produced by the pyrolysis of aza-aromatics such as pyridine, methylpyrimidine and triazine over cobalt nanoparticles in an Ar atmosphere; good yields of such nanotubes are obtained by carrying out the pyrolysis of a mixture of pyridine and Fe(CO)(5) in flowing Ar + H-2.

Hollow nanotubes of SiO2, Al2O3, V2O5, and MoO3 have been prepared using carbon nanotubes as templates. The procedure involves coating the carbon nanotubes with tetraethylorthosilicate, aluminum isopropoxide, or vanadium pentoxide gel, followed by calcination and heating at higher temperatures in air to oxidize the carbon. SiO2 nanotubes containing transition metal ions have been prepared by this procedure since such materials may be of use in catalysis.

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are fascinating systems exhibiting many novel physical properties. In this paper, we give a brief review of the structural, electronic, vibrational, and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes. In situ resonance Raman scattering of SWNTs investigated under electrochemical biasing demonstrates that the intensity of the radial breathing mode varies significantly in a nonmonotonic manner as a function of the cathodic bias voltage, but does not change appreciably under anodic bias. These results can be quantitatively understood in terms of the changes in the energy gaps between the 1 D van Hove singularities in the electron density of states, arising possibly due to the alterations in the overlap integral of pi bonds between the p-orbitals of the adjacent carbon atoms. In the second part of this paper, we review our high-pressure X-ray diffraction results, which show that the triangular lattice of the carbon nanotube bundles continues to persist up to similar to10 GPa. The lattice is seen to relax just before the phase transformation, which is observed at similar to10 GPa. Further, our results display the reversibility of the 2D lattice symmetry even after compression up to 13 GPa well beyond the 5 GPa value observed recently. These experimental results explicitly validate the predicted remarkable mechanical resilience of the nanotubes.

We synthesize vertically aligned arrays of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a chemical vapor deposition system with floating catalyst, using different concentrations of hydrogen in the gas feedstock. We report the effect of different hydrogen concentrations on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting material. We show that a lower hydrogen concentration during synthesis results in the growth of stiffer CNT arrays with higher average bulk density. A lower hydrogen concentration also leads to the synthesis of CNT arrays that can reach higher peak stress at maximum compressive strain, and dissipate a larger amount of energy during compression. The individual CNTs in the arrays synthesized with a lower hydrogen concentration have, on average, larger outer diameters (associated with the growth of CNTs with a larger number of walls), but present a less uniform diameter distribution. The overall heights of the arrays and their strain recovery after compression have been found to be independent of the hydrogen concentration during growth. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. We have shown that the general theories of metals and semiconductors can be employed to understand the diameter and voltage dependency of current through metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes, respectively. The current through a semiconducting multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) is associated with the energy gap that is different for different shells. The contribution of the outermost shell is larger as compared to the inner shells. The general theories can also explain the diameter dependency of maximum current through nanotubes. We have also compared the current carrying ability of a MWCNT and an array of the same diameter of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and found that MWCNTs are better suited and deserve further investigation for possible applications as interconnects.

We report unipolar resistive switching in ultrathin films of chemically produced graphene (reduced graphene oxide) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The two-terminal devices with yield >99% are made at room temperature by forming continuous films of graphene of thickness similar to 20 nm on indium tin oxide coated glass electrode, followed by metal (Au or Al) deposition on the film. These memory devices are nonvolatile, rewritable with ON/OFF ratios up to similar to 10(5) and switching times up to 10 mu s. The devices made of MWNT films are rewritable with ON/OFF ratios up to similar to 400. The resistive switching mechanism is proposed to be nanogap formation and filamentary conduction paths. Carbon nanotubes produced by the treatment of Mg1−xMxAl2O4 (M = Fe, Co, or Ni; x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, or 0.4) spinels with an H2–CH4 mixture at 1070 °C have been investigated systematically. The grains of the oxide-metal composite particles are uniformly covered by a weblike network of carbon nanotube bundles, several tens of micrometers long, made up of single-wall nanotubes with a diameter close to 4 nm. Only the smallest metal particles (<5 nm) are involved in the formation of the nanotubes. A macroscopic characterization method involving surface area measurements and chemical analysis has been developed in order to compare the different nanotube specimens. An increase in the transition metal content of the catalyst yields more carbon nanotubes (up to a metal content of 10.0 wt% or x = 0.3), but causes a decrease in carbon quality. The best compromise is to use 6.7 wt% of metal (x = 0.2) in the catalyst. Co gives superior results with respect to both the quantity and quality of the nanotubes. In the case of Fe, the quality is notably hampered by the formation of Fe3C particles.
