The objective of this work was to evaluate the main differences in the genetic control of the iron concentration in Mesoamerican and Andean common bean seeds, in early generations, and to select recombinants with a high iron concentration in the seeds. F1, F1 reciprocal, F2, F2 reciprocal, and backcross (BC11 and BC12) generations were produced by crosses between Mesoamerican (CNFP 10104 x CHC 01-175) and Andean (Cal 96 x Hooter) inbred lines. The expression of significant maternal effect was observed for the Mesoamerican gene pool. Iron concentration was higher in the seed coat of Mesoamerican common bean seeds (54.61 to 67.92%) and in the embryo of Andean common bean seeds (69.40 to 73.44%). High broad-sense heritability was obtained for iron concentration in Mesoamerican and Andean common bean seeds. Gains with the selection of higher magnitude, from 20.39 to 24.58%, are expected in Mesoamerican common bean seeds. Iron concentration in common bean seeds showed a continuous distribution in F2, which is characteristic of quantitative inheritance in Mesoamerican and Andean common bean seeds. Recombinants with high iron concentration in seeds can be selected in both Mesoamerican and Andean common bean hybrids.

The objective of this work was to evaluate bean genotypes for resistance to soybean looper (Chrysodeixis includens). Initially, free-choice tests were carried out with 59 genotypes, divided into three groups according to leaf color intensity (dark green, light green, and medium green), in order to evaluate oviposition preference. Subsequently, 12 genotypes with high potential for resistance were selected, as well as two susceptible commercial standards. With these genotypes, new tests were performed for oviposition in a greenhouse, besides tests for attractiveness and consumption under laboratory conditions (26±2ºC, 65±10% RH, and 14 h light: 10 h dark photophase). In the no-choice test with adults, in the greenhouse, the 'IAC Jabola', Arcelina 1, 'IAC Boreal', 'Flor de Mayo', and 'IAC Formoso' genotypes were the least oviposited, showing antixenosis-type resistance for oviposition. In the free-choice test with larvae, Arcelina 4, 'BRS Horizonte', 'Pérola', H96A102-1-1-1-52, 'IAC Boreal', 'IAC Harmonia', and 'IAC Formoso' were the less consumed genotypes, which indicates antixenosis to feeding. In the no-choice test, all genotypes (except for 'IAPAR 57') expressed moderate levels of antixenosis to feeding against C. includens larvae.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate Trichoderma harzianum isolates for biological control of white mold in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Five isolates were evaluated for biocontrol of white mold in 'Perola' common bean under field conditions, in the 2009 and 2010 crop seasons. A commercial isolate (1306) and a control treatment were included. Foliar applications at 2x109 conidia mL-1 were performed at 42 and 52 days after sowing (DAS), in 2009, and at 52 DAS in 2010. The CEN287, CEN316, and 1306 isolates decreased the number of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum apothecia per square meter in comparison to the control, in both crop seasons. CEN287, CEN316, and 1306 decreased white mold severity during the experimental period, when compared to the control.

A floração nos citros, assim como em outras fruteiras, é um dos fatores determinantes para a produção. A possibilidade de inibição ou redução da florada normal e alteração da época de produção para a lima 'Tahiti' é fator primordial para determinar sua rentabilidade econômica. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do ácido giberélico sobre a florada, número de flores formadas, da lima ácida 'Tahiti', nas condições do Estado de São Paulo durante dois anos, buscando inibir a florada normal e observar o efeito desta inibição sobre produções temporãs. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados (5 blocos) com 3 plantas por tratamento. Foi utilizada uma planta como bordadura entre os tratamentos e uma linha de plantas entre os blocos. Os tratamentos foram: testemunha, 20, 40 e 80 mg/L de ácido giberélico (AG3) + 10 ml/L de espalhante adesivo, e o pH da água utilizada foi 6,2. As plantas foram tratadas com ácido giberélico durante o inverno (estação seca) após 50 dias sem irrigação no primeiro ano e 60 dias no segundo. O ácido giberélico reduziu o número de flores formadas (-81%) e aumentou a produção de frutos temporões (+59,77% ou +16,04 kg/pl).

Foi instalado um experimento de seleção de porta-enxertos para a lima-ácida-'Tahiti' (Citrus latifolia Tanaka), em dezembro de 1988, na Estação Experimental de Citricultura de Bebedouro-SP, com o objetivo de conhecer seu comportamento e oferecer novas opções de plantio para as condições ecológicas semelhantes às daquela região. A variedade copa, originária do BAG-Citros do IAC, localizado no Centro de Citricultura Sylvio Moreira, Cordeirópolis-SP, é um clone nucelar de 'Tahiti', denominado IAC-5. Os porta-enxertos, que tiveram a mesma origem, foram: tangerinas-'Sunki' (Citrus sunki Hort. ex Tanaka); 'Cleópatra'(Citrus reshni Hort. ex Tan.); 'Batangas' e 'Oneco' (Citrus reticulata Blanco); trifoliata-EEL (Poncirus trifoliata Raf.); limão-'Cravo' (Citrus limonia Osbeck); limão-'Volkameriano Catania 2' (Citrus volkameriana Tan. & Pasq.); tangelo-'Orlando' (C. reticulata Blanco x Citrus paradisi Macf.); citrumelo-'Swingle' (P. trifoliata Raf. X C.paradisi Macf.); citrange-'Morton' (P. trifoliata Raf. X C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck) e laranja-'Caipira DAC' (C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck). Com relação à produção, avaliada no período de 1991 a 1998, os porta-enxertos de melhor comportamento foram o tangelo-'Orlando', citrange-'Morton' e citrumelo-'Swingle'. As mais baixas produções ocorreram nos porta-enxertos de tangerina e de laranja-'Caipira DAC'. O limão-'Cravo' apresentou produção intermediária e proporcionou curta vida útil às plantas.

A conservação refrigerada da lima ácida 'Tahiti' sob baixa temperatura permite o aumento no período de comercialização dos frutos, entretanto, a perda da coloração verde da casca é o principal entrave que impede este prolongamento. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi verificar o efeito da aplicação do 1-metilciclopropeno (1-MCP), associado ao uso de cera e ácido giberélico (GA), sobre a conservação refrigerada de lima ácida 'Tahiti'. Foram aplicados os tratamentos: T1:Controle; T2: 1-MCP (1 mg. L-1) durante 12 horas a 20ºC; T3: Cera (0,1 mL por fruto); T4: Ácido giberélico - GA (10 mg. L-1); T5: 1-MCP + Cera; T6: 1-MCP + GA; T7: Cera + GA; T8: 1-MCP + Cera + GA; T9: T2 + re-aplicação de 1-MCP após 30 dias de armazenamento. Os frutos foram armazenados durante 30 e 60 dias a 10C e 90% UR. A cera foi suficiente para retardar a perda de coloração verde da casca até 30 dias de conservação a 10ºC. O 1-MCP também mantém a coloração verde até 30 dias de conservação refrigerada, enquanto que a sua reaplicação após este período não apresenta efeito para a manutenção da coloração verde da casca. No presente trabalho não foi pronunciado o efeito do ácido giberélico. Após 60 dias de armazenamento os frutos não se apresentavam comercializáveis.

Leaf area measurements are required in several agronomical studies. Usually, there is an interest for measurement methods that are simple, quick and that will not destroy the leaf. The objectives of this work were to evaluate leaf area (y), length (l) and width (w) of 20 half-sibling progenies of custard apple tree (Annona squamosa L.), and to fit regression equations of the type y = a + bx, where x = l.w, that will allow y to be estimated based on l and w. The experiment was conducted as random blocks with five replicates and four plants per plot. Five mature leaves were randomly collected from each plant. Leaf area was measured with an automatic measuring device and leaf dimensions were determined with a ruler. All values of b were different from zero. Differences occurred only in 11% of the 190 possible comparison pairs between progenies, with regard to the estimates of b. No differences were observed between progenies with respect to leaf length, width and area. In view of this fact, the equation y = 0.72 x (R² = 0.77) was fitted for all progenies.

O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar métodos não-destrutivos para a determinação da área foliar de plantas jovens de lima ácida 'Tahiti'(Citrus latifolia Tan.), em campo. Foram utilizadas informações de variáveis biométricas de 28 plantas jovens (0,07 a 1,44 m²) e imagens digitais da área frontal de cada planta (silhueta de copa). Essas variáveis foram correlacionadas com medidas diretas (contagem total de folhas x área foliar média). Como resultado, foi possível estimar a área foliar total das plantas (AFT) com base na equação: AFT = 88,936 x DI - 1,4017 (R²=0,75), em que DI representa o diâmetro do caule 5 cm abaixo do ponto em que a copa foi enxertada, e a silhueta da planta em m² (IM): AFT = 2,4951 x IM (R²=0,72). A área foliar dos ramos secundários das plantas (AFR) pode ser estimada mediante uma equação exponencial envolvendo o diâmetro do ramo (DR): AFR = 0,0144e277,02 x DR (R²=0,71). Estas metodologias podem ser utilizadas quando o interesse for por um valor médio de área foliar no pomar, não sendo indicadas quando é necessária elevada precisão, pois os erros são elevados.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de diferentes injúrias mecânicas na qualidade de limas ácidas 'Tahiti'. Foram testados três tipos de lesões: impacto, compressão e corte. Após esses tratamentos, os frutos foram armazenados em condições de ambiente (25±1 °C, 65±5% UR). As avaliações foram feitas a cada 3 dias, determinando-se atividade respiratória, aparência, perda de massa, pH, teores de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável e de ácido ascórbico. Durante o período de armazenamento, as lesões mostraram-se prejudiciais à qualidade, afetando distintamente os parâmetros químicos, a aparência e diminuindo os dias de possível comercialização dos frutos, principalmente naqueles submetidos ao corte e ao impacto. Estas injúrias também ocasionaram maior aumento na atividade respiratória dos frutos. A perda de massa fresca também foi observada durante este período e foi agravada quando os frutos foram submetidos ao corte. A injúria por impacto foi a mais prejudicial para a qualidade das limas ácidas 'Tahiti', comprometendo a aparência dos frutos aos 9 dias de armazenamento.

Pseudaletia ( Mythimna) unipuncta (Haworth) es una plaga defoliadora del maíz presente año tras año en la Cuenca del Ebro, que realiza en el maíz daños esporádicos pero a veces devastadores. La implantación creciente de maíz resistente a taladros ha producido, en la zona del presente estudio, la disminución casi total de los daños debidos a los taladros Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre) y Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner). Sin embargo, no se sabe aún cómo el incremento de maíz transgénico puede afectar a las poblaciones de P. unipuncta. Actualmente no hay datos sobre biología o parámetros del desarrollo de la especie en la Península Ibérica necesarios para evaluar los posibles efectos de las nuevas variedades utilizadas. Para ello es necesario primero establecer un método de cría adecuado y posteriormente iniciar los estudios sobre la biología de la misma. En el presente trabajo se planteó conocer diferentes parámetros del desarrollo larvario de poblaciones locales de P. unipuncta alimentada sobre hoja de maíz (variedades Tietar y PR33P66) y sobre dos dietas semisintéticas, una a base de alubias. Phaseolus vulgaris, y otra a base de maíz, Zea maya. Los resultados mostraron que las larvas desarrolladas en dieta a base de alubias sufrieron menor mortalidad, que las desarrolladas con planta o sobre la otra dieta, además el peso de las pupas resultantes fue mayor y presentaron menos malformaciones. En cuanto al numero de estadios larvarios, la mayoría pupó tras seis mudas larvarias, necesitando, las de dieta de maíz, estadios larvarios adicionales. Estos resultados indican que la dieta a base de alubias es la más adecuada para posteriores trabajos con esta especie.

Approximately 0.2 % of all angiosperms are classified as metal hyperaccumulators based on their extraordinarily high leaf metal contents, for example >1 % zinc, >0.1 % nickel or >0.01 % cadmium (Cd) in dry biomass. So far, metal hyperaccumulation has been considered to be a taxon-wide, constitutively expressed trait, the extent of which depends solely on available metal concentrations in the soil. Here we show that in the facultative metallophyte Arabidopsis halleri, both insect herbivory and mechanical wounding of leaves trigger an increase specifically in leaf Cd accumulation. Moreover, the Cd concentrations accumulated in leaves can serve as an elemental defense against herbivory by larvae of the Brassicaceae specialist small white (Pieris rapae), thus allowing the plant to take advantage of this non-essential trace element and toxin. Metal homeostasis genes are overrepresented in the systemic transcriptional response of roots to the wounding of leaves in A. halleri, supporting that leaf Cd accumulation is preceded by systemic signaling events. A similar, but quantitatively less pronounced transcriptional response was observed in A. thaliana, suggesting that the systemically regulated modulation of metal homeostasis in response to leaf wounding also occurs in non-hyperaccumulator plants. This is the first report of an environmental stimulus influencing metal hyperaccumulation.

Plant growth regulators and biostimulants have been used as an agronomic technique to optimize the production of seedlings in various crops. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of gibberellic acid and the biostimulant Stimulate® on the initial growth of tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.). The experiments were conducted in a nursery with 50% shading, in a randomized block design with five replications and five plants per plot. Thirty eight days after sowing, the leaves were sprayed seven times a day with 0.0 (control), 0.8, 1.6, 2.4 and 3.2 mL of gibberellic acid L-1 aqueous solution and with 0.0 (control), 6.0,12.0, 18.0, and 24.0 mL Stimulate® L-1 aqueous solution. Stem diameter (SD), plant height (PH), longest root length (LRL), shoot dry mass (SDM), root dry mass (RDM) and RDM:SDM ratio were evaluated ninety days after sowing. Variance and regression analysis showed that GA3 at 4% promoted plant growth (height), but had no significant effect on stem diameter, longest root length, shoot and root dry mass and the RDM:SDM ratio. On the other hand, all concentrations of Stimulate® significantly increased plant height and shoot and root dry mass of tamarind seedlings.

The present study evaluated the anatomy, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic potential of grapevine leaves grown under plastic cover. The experiment was carried out in vineyards of Moscato Giallo cultivar covered and uncovered with plastic. A block design with 10 selected plants was used for each area (covered and uncovered). Twelve leaves (six of them fully exposed to solar radiation and six grown under shaded conditions) were collected from each area and were fixed and analyzed microscopically (thickness of the adaxial and abaxial epidermis and of the palisade and spongy parenchymas). Chlorophyll content and photosynthetic potential were determined in the vineyard at veraison and after harvest. Plastic covering increased the thickness of the palisade parenchyma in exposed and shaded leaves due to solar radiation restriction. However, the leaves from the covered vineyard did not have the same response to the restriction of solar radiation, as observed in the uncovered vineyard. The thickness of the adaxial and abaxial epidermis and of the spongy parenchyma did not vary due to solar radiation restriction. Chlorophyll content increased in the leaves of covered plants. The photosynthetic potential of the vines is not affected by solar radiation restriction imposed by plastic cover due to anatomical modification in leaves.

In pineapple fields, weed competition is exacerbated by the fact that the crop is small and has a very slow vegetative development. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of herbicides on growth, yield and quality of pineapple, cultivar 'Pérola'. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four treatments and four replications. Treatments consisted of weeding by hoe and the herbicides diuron; fluazifop-p-butyl and atrazine + S-metolachlor applied in post-emergence. The characteristics evaluated monthly during the vegetative stage were stem diameter, D-leaf length, number of leaves, number of emitted leaves and percentage of natural floral induction. In the reproductive phase, evaluations were made of average fruit weight (g) with and without crown, fruits length and diameter, number of slip, slip-sucker and sucker type seedlings, determination of soluble solids and pH in the pulp. There was no effect of herbicide treatment on the vegetative growth characteristics. Stem diameter increased until 330 days after planting, showing a decrease after this period. The D-leaf grew over time in all treatments, although phytotoxicity symptoms were observed after the first application of herbicides. The traits evaluated on the reproductive phase showed no significant differences in response to treatments. Therefore, the use of diuron fluazifop-p-butyl and atrazine + S-metolachlor did not affect growth, yield and fruit quality of pineapple, cultivar 'Pérola'.

Nitrogen isotope composition (δ15N) in plant organic matter is currently used as a natural tracer of nitrogen acquisition efficiency. However, the δ15N value of whole leaf material does not properly reflect the way in which N is assimilated because isotope fractionations along metabolic reactions may cause substantial differences among leaf compounds. In other words, any change in metabolic composition or allocation pattern may cause undesirable variability in leaf δ15N. Here, we investigated the δ15N in different leaf fractions and individual metabolites from rapeseed (Brassica napus) leaves. We show that there were substantial differences in δ15N between nitrogenous compounds (up to 30 ) and the content in (15N enriched) nitrate had a clear influence on leaf δ15N. Using a simple steady-state model of day metabolism, we suggest that the δ15N value in major amino acids was mostly explained by isotope fractionation associated with isotope effects on enzyme-catalysed reactions in primary nitrogen metabolism. δ15N values were further influenced by light versus dark conditions and the probable occurrence of alternative biosynthetic pathways. We conclude that both biochemical pathways (that fractionate between isotopes) and nitrogen sources (used for amino acid production) should be considered when interpreting the δ15N value of leaf nitrogenous compounds
