Although there is a growing awareness of the value of temporary ponds in Europe, there is still remarkably little information available to help guide their conservation and management. General principles which can be used to guide the management of temporary ponds as a whole have yet to be established. The aim of this article, therefore, is to give a broader overview of the main principles of temporary pond conservation, particularly by building on a number of general principles for managing ponds previously described by Biggs et al. (1994) and Williams et al. The authors emphasise the importance of surveys in order to get data on which to base management strategies. The main principles of temporary pond management are described, and examples of three case studies of ponds in England are given.

The span of the bridge was assumed as 100 feet. The type of bridge used is the timber Howe Truss. The height of truss was taken as 20 feet between center lines of top and bottom chords. The width was taken as 18 feet center to center of trusses. The truss was divided up into five panels 20 feet long.
It was designed according to the "General Specifications for Steel Highway Bridges" by Ketchum. For the live load for the floor and its supports, a load of 80 pounds per square foot of total floor surface or a 15 ton traction engine with axles 10 feet centers and 6 feet gage, two thirds of load to be carried by rear axles.
For the truss a load of 75 pounds per square foot of floor surface.
For the wind load the bottom lateral bracing is to be designed to resist a lateral wind load of 300 pounds per foot of span; 150 pounds of this to be treated as a moving load.
The top lateral bracing is to be designed to resist a lateral wind force of 150 pounds per foot of span.
The timber to be used in the bridge is to be Douglas fir.
The unit stresses used for timber are those of the American Railway Engineering Association.

Background: Recent studies have clearly demonstrated the enormous virus diversity that exists among wild animals. This exemplifies the required expansion of our knowledge of the virus diversity present in wildlife, as well as the potential transmission of these viruses to domestic animals or humans. Methods: In the present study we evaluated the viral diversity of fecal samples (n = 42) collected from 10 different species of wild small carnivores inhabiting the northern part of Spain using random PCR in combination with next-generation sequencing. Samples were collected from American mink (Neovison vison), European mink (Mustela lutreola), European polecat (Mustela putorius), European pine marten (Martes martes), stone marten (Martes foina), Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) and Eurasian badger (Meles meles) of the family of Mustelidae; common genet (Genetta genetta) of the family of Viverridae; red fox (Vulpes vulpes) of the family of Canidae and European wild cat (Felis silvestris) of the family of Felidae. Results: A number of sequences of possible novel viruses or virus variants were detected, including a theilovirus, phleboviruses, an amdovirus, a kobuvirus and picobirnaviruses. Conclusions: Using random PCR in combination with next generation sequencing, sequences of various novel viruses or virus variants were detected in fecal samples collected from Spanish carnivores. Detected novel viruses highlight the viral diversity that is present in fecal material of wild carnivores.

A summary of results obtained from 1969 to 1977 is given. It concerns the biology of the species (ecology and distribution of the adults, behaviour and diel variation of catch rates, reproduction and larval migration, juveniles migration and recruitment at sea, sexual maturity, growth and mortality by marking experiments) and the history of the fishery (catches, efforts, seasonal variations of catch rates). The combined use of a dynamic pool model of Ricker and a production model of Fox leads to the evaluation of the potential of the stock. The simulation of different and combined fishery strategies on adults at sea and juveniles in lagoons, allows the evaluation of the consequences (in yield, value, biomass and potential fecundity) of the different proposed management procedures (reductions in fishing effort, closed seasons on both fisheries).

Statistical data (1959-1977) of the trawling fishery off the continental shelf of Côte d'Ivoire has been fitted to the Fox (PRODFIT) global model. Owing to the proliferation of baliste (B. capriscus) since the years 1971-1972, data were divided into two groups. Maximum Sustainable Yield MSY: PMMC in the text), for the whole of commercial species in the continental shelf, decreased from 8800t to 5900t between the two periods; the difference represents balistes potentialities at bottom level. The model has also been fitted to data which concern Sciaenidae coastal community and Sparidae community which are parts by the 50 m isobathe. Deep layer (50-120m) MSY is at 2350t during the whole period of study. Until 1977, this potentiality was never reached, because of the low productivity of the Sparidae community.

Evolution of catch and catch by unit effort of the sardine fishing boats (purse seiners) has been examined from 1966 to 1975. The effort data has been calculated with a new computer programme: Crosardi (Soisson et Barbe, 1974). The analysis has been done on the whole stock and in more detail on the east and west stocks of Côte d'Ivoire. The Sardinella eba stock has been analysed separately. Those analyses were done using the general production model (Prodfit; Fox, 1974). The stock of the eastern area of the Côte d'Ivoire seems to be exploited at its maximum level. Nevertheless, the western area stock could be able to support a progressive increase of fishing effort.

Plasticine strips are rolled between cylindrical rollers to model the phenomenon of material transfer in metal rolling. Strips of thin plastic film ('clingfilm') on the plasticine strip are used to model the oxide layer that covers the surface of aluminium. The effect of gaps opening up between the clingfilm strips is investigated. It is found that the percentage area of the exposed strip giving rise to transfer of material increases with the gap width. The evidence strongly suggests that plasticine particles transferred to the rolls are able to pick off plasticine from the strip on successive passes. Larger plasticine particles are more likely to show this behaviour and consequently grow in size. The results confirm the usefulness of plasticine as a suitable material to investigate transfer layer formation in metal rolling, and help inform development of experimental procedures to study the evolution of real metal transfer layers. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. In view of the concern caused by the declining trend in the annual shrimp yield in the Central Gulf of California, an attempt was made to analyze the fishing effort level exerted upon the shrimp stocks of the blue (Farfantepenaeus stylirostris) and the brown shrimp (F. californiensis) from 1980 to 1991. For this purpose, both Schaefer and Fox production models were applied. The results from these analyses revealed an economic overexploitation condition, and suggested an imperative need to implement as a regulatory measure, the reduction of the catch per unit of effort level (CPUE) to keep the fishery within acceptable bioeconomic margins of a maximum sustainable yield (Ys). This can only be achieved through the adjustment of the fleet size from 481 vessels down to 250 or 275.
