La tesis analiza la trayectoria de las ciudades chilenas tomando como referencias la extensión, vastedad, proporciones y diversidad del paisaje en una región remota, ubicada en el confín del continente, aislada por el desierto de Atacama y la cordillera de Los Andes y que comprendía algunos de los territorios más desconocidos del Nuevo Mundo. El contexto temporal es el siglo XVIII, el período más activo de la colonización, cuando las primeras fundaciones tenían niveles de desarrollo que se expresaban en rasgos particulares, se construyen numerosas ciudades y se perfilan los contrastes entre el modelo teórico de ciudad y las ciudades reales. OBJETIVOS Analizar la forma, funciones y significado de las ciudades como respuestas a la extensión, vastedad, proporciones y diversidad del paisaje. Explorar los avances en el conocimiento del territorio y las nuevas interpretaciones del paisaje como bases para definir las estrategias de colonización y nuevas fundaciones Estudiar las influencias específicas del entorno sobre las estructuras urbanas Estos objetivos buscan aportar al conocimiento de la urbanización colonial en Chile rescatando las características distintivas del proceso según los diferentes ámbitos territoriales. METODOLOGÍA Se seleccionaron 22 ciudades como ejemplos de las transformaciones urbanas en Chile, según los paisajes y contextos culturales. Las ciudades se observaron como partes de un sistema de colonización en un territorio extenso y como individualidades fundadas en sitios específicos, cuyas cualidades se expresan en el paisaje del entorno de cada núcleo urbano. CONCLUSIONES La tesis confirma que la colonización de Chile fue una empresa militar y de dominio espacial del territorio. Las ciudades sostenían la conquista y el arraigo mediante estructuras urbanas regulares porque, la cuadricula -además de facilitar el trazado y el repartimiento de los lotes era símbolo de estabilidad en una región hostil y sujeta a la acción inesperada y destructora de la naturaleza, una forma orientadora en la vastedad y una expresión de orden y medida que contrastaba con la diversidad y extensión del paisaje. A pesar de la primacía de la cuadrícula, las ciudades no eran simples imitaciones de anteriores fundaciones; con el avance colonizador se afirmaba el anclaje de cada ciudad al paisaje del sitio de fundación, se perfeccionaban la forma y funciones urbanas mediante la adaptación al entorno y se fortalecía el arraigo de los a los nuevos paisajes que se iban construyendo. Las transformaciones urbanas dependían de los desafíos territoriales, las expectativas de los gobernantes y capacidades técnicas. Los cambios principales se manifiestan en el siglo XVIII, cuando las distintas zonas de Chile se colonizaron con estrategias afines a sus características geográficas y culturales y a las diferencias entre valles mineros, valles agrícolas, el litoral y las islas. El análisis revela que el desarrollo urbano de las ciudades fue condicionado por el relieve, la relación con otros núcleos urbanos y caminos, los recursos del lugar, la integración con estructuras colonizadoras -hacienda, fuerte o misión- predominantes en cada territorio y las interpretaciones del paisaje que se proponían desde la filosofía y las ciencias ilustradas. ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION The thesis analyzes the trajectory of the Chilean cities taking as reference the extension, vastness, proportions and diversity of landscape in a remote region, located on the edge of the continent, isolated by the Atacama Desert and the Andes mountains and comprising some of the most unknown territories of the New World. The temporal context is the eighteenth century, the most active of colonization, when the first foundations had levels of development that were expressed in particular forms; in this period many cities are built and the contrasts between the theoretical model of the city and the royal cities are emerging . OBJECTIVES •Analyze the form, function and significance of cities as responses to the extension, vastness, proportions and diversity of landscape. •Explore the advances in knowledge of the territory and the new interpretations of the landscape as a basis for defining the strategies of colonization and new foundations •Examine specific environmental influences on urban structures These objectives seek to contribute to the knowledge of colonial urbanization in Chile rescuing the distinctive characteristics of the process according to the different territorial areas. METHODOLOGY 22 cities as examples of urban transformation in Chile were selected according as the landscapes and cultural contexts. The cities were seen as part of a settlement system in a large territory and as individuals elements based on specific sites, whose qualities are expressed in the landscape around of each urban center. CONCLUSIONS The thesis confirms that the colonization of Chile was a military and space control of the territory. The cities holding the conquest and establishment through regular urban structures because, besides grid to facilitate the tracing and the division of the urban space was a symbol of stability in a hostile region and subject to unexpected and destructive action of nature, a guiding how the vastness and an expression of order and as contrasted with the diversity and extent of the landscape. Despite the primacy of the grid, the cities were not mere imitations of earlier foundations; as colonization progresses, the landscape of the place stated in each city, form and urban functions are improved by adapting the environment and establishment the landscapes that were recently built. Urban transformations depend on the territorial challenges, expectations of governments and technical capabilities. The main changes are manifested in the eighteenth century, when different areas of Chile are colonized with strategies related to its geographical and cultural characteristics and differences between mining valleys, agricultural valleys, the coast and islands. The analysis reveals that the urban development of cities was conditioned by relief, relative to other urban centers and roads, resources, integration with other colonial structures –farmers, missions or forts- dominant in each territory and the interpretations of landscape that is proposed from philosophy and illustrated science.

El presente trabajo ahonda en el conocimiento del viento urbano. La investigación pasa revista a la historia de la relación del viento y la ciudad y revisa tres pares de disciplinas implicadas en comprender mejor dicha relación: la arquitectura y el urbanismo, la meteorología y la climatología y, por último, la ingeniería aeroespacial y la aerodinámica civil. Se estudian el comportamiento y la fluidez del viento al desplazarse por cuerpos romos no fuselados (los edificios y la trama urbana), así como sus efectos dentro de la ciudad. Asimismo, se examinan las metodologías existentes para comprenderlo, medirlo y analizarlo, desde los estudios de proporción y modelamiento en túneles de viento hasta las simulaciones virtuales y las dinámicas de fluidos CFD. Posteriormente se reconoce un caso de estudio que permite analizar el viento como un factor aislado, pero desde los parámetros morfológicos de una ciudad en la que se generan patrones aerodinámicos muy característicos: Punta Arenas, la ciudad más austral del mundo, donde los vientos corren casi siempre desde la misma dirección, el “oeste”, a más de 33,3 m/s, lo que equivale a 120 Km/h. La hipótesis de la investigación es que la morfología del casco histórico de Punta Arenas genera patrones aerodinámicos que condicionan el bienestar en los espacios públicos. El objetivo general de la investigación es estudiar los efectos aerodinámicos presentes en la morfología urbana para mejorar la permanencia en los espacios públicos, proponiendo estrategias para el desarrollo morfológico y volumétrico de los cuerpos edificados. En el desarrollo del caso de estudio se reconocen, al interior del cañón urbano, las temperaturas, los índices de asoleamiento y sus conos de sombra, la dirección del viento y la visualización del vórtice al interior del cañón urbano, para determinar cómo estos factores impactan en el espacio público. Las conclusiones indican que los patrones aerodinámicos presentes en la morfología urbana conducen el viento hacia los espacios públicos que se encuentran o desprotegidos del viento o con excesiva turbulencias, por tanto, los patrones aerodinámicos inciden en el uso estancial de los espacios públicos, generando problemas mecánicos al peatón e incidiendo en la sensación térmica en dichos espacios. Ello permite confirmar que es posible modificar y mejorar el uso de los espacios públicos si somos capaces de modelar la morfología urbana con el fin de reorientar los patrones aerodinámicos que afectan significativamente a dichos espacios. ABSTRACT This work deepens into the knowledge of urban wind. The study reviews the history of the relationship between the wind and the city and reviews three pairs of disciplines involved in understanding better these relationship: Architecture and Urbanism, Meteorology and Climatology and, finally, Aerospace and Civil Aerodynamics. The behavior and flow of wind through blunt bodies not fairings (the buildings and the urban fabric) and its effects within the city are studied. Also, existing methodologies to understand, measure and analyze the wind are examined, from the studios of proportion and modeling in wind tunnels to virtual simulations and fluid dynamics CFD. Subsequently, a case study to analyze the wind as an isolated factor is recognized, but from the morphological parameters of a city where very characteristic aerodynamic patterns are generated: Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, where the winds run almost always from the same direction, the "West", at more than 33.3 m/s, which is equivalent to 120 km/h. The research hypothesis is that the morphology of the historic center of Punta Arenas generates aerodynamic patterns that determine the well-being in public spaces. The overall objective of the research is to study the aerodynamic effects present in the urban morphology to improve retention in public spaces, proposing strategies for morphological and volumetric development of the built bodies. In developing the case study are recognized, within the urban canyon, temperatures, rates of sunlight and shadow cones, wind direction and visualization of the vortex into the urban canyon, to determine how these factors impact in public space. The findings indicate that the aerodynamic patterns in urban morphology lead wind to public spaces that are unprotected or find themselves in a condition of excessive wind or turbulence; therefore, aerodynamic patterns affect the use of public spaces, generating mechanical problems for pedestrians and affecting the thermal sensation in such spaces. This confirms that it is possible to modify and improve the use of public spaces if we are able to model the urban morphology in order to reorient the aerodynamic patterns that significantly affect those spaces.

O trabalho tem a proposta de analisar os desdobramentos do teatro musical brasileiro desde a primeira encenação em território nacional de adaptações de espetáculos do Teatro de Revista, gênero originário da França, até as superproduções musicais realizadas nos últimos 16 anos de adaptações de espetáculos americanos. O panorama histórico e analítico será estudado, com ênfase no teatro musical que se utiliza de elementos midiatizados para estar inserido em uma sociedade em que a produção cultural é vista como internacionalizada e mercantilizada. Como forma de marketing, os produtores utilizam-se da notoriedade midiática presente em formatos estrangeiros já consagrados, adaptações renomadas e bem aceitas pelo público, além da fama de celebridades que são escaladas para os musicais. Tudo para a conquista de um patrocinador que, por sua vez, acaba fazendo exigências que interferem de maneira decisiva na montagem dos espetáculos. Em meio a um processo onde são tantos os direcionamentos pré-estabelecidos por patrocinadores, onde se encontra o genuíno teatro musical brasileiro? A pesquisa abrange o ineditismo da presença de temáticas nacionais em formatos estrangeiros e agrega o conjunto de fatores que possibilitam que um roteiro de musical saia do papel e adentre os palcos, tais como as políticas públicas de incentivos fiscais; a ligação de empresas patrocinadoras e suas marcas a musicais; o fato de que, mesmo as produções sendo pagas por dinheiro público, possuírem ingressos que não são a preços populares. Para auxiliar nas conjecturas a serem formadas, será utilizada uma metodologia histórico-descritiva com foco na relação do tema com elementos notórios na mídia, como os artistas e obras a serem adaptadas no palco.

Valles Caldera National Preserve, located in northern New Mexico, has an opportunity to implement sustainable design concepts while demonstrating long-term financial sustainability in the design of its new visitor center. This building can be designed to use natural systems to provide energy and water, and to blend in with the setting‰Ûªs unique historical and natural landscape. Structures can be integrated into nature by incorporating common techniques, features, and materials of a particular period, area, or people. This analysis identified capital costs for both traditional and sustainable construction techniques, as well as long-term operational costs. The results demonstrate that capital costs of sustainable design that is integrated into the landscape can be comparable to conventional costs and provide long-term operational costs savings.

According to the importance of rehabilitation and recovery of Architectural Heritage in the live of people, this paper is aimed to strengthen the traditional methods of stone vaults calculation taking advantage of the technological characteristics of the powerful program ANSYS Workbench. As an example of this, it could find out the possible pathologies that could arise during the construction history of the building. To limit this research, the upper vault of the main chapel of the Santiago parish church in Orihuela -Alicante- is selected as a reference which is a Jeronimo Quijano´s important building work in the XVI century in the Renaissance. Moreover, it is an innovative stone masonry vault that consists of 8 double intercrossed arches with each other and braced by severies. During the seventeenth century there was a lantern in the central cap and it is unknown why it was removed. Its construction could justify the original constructive solution with intercrossed arches that freed the center to create a more enlightened and comfortable presbytery. By similarity with other Quijano’s works, it is considered a small lantern drilling the central spherical cap. It is proposed to carry out a comparative study of it with different architectural solutions from the same period and based on several common parameters such as: a vault of square plant with spherical surround, intercrossed arches, a possible lantern, the dimension of the permitted space, similar states of loads and compact limestone masonry. The three solutions are mainly differentiated by their size and the type of lantern and its comparison lets us know which one is the most resistant and stable. The other two building works maintain some connection with the Quijano's professional scope. It has selected the particular case of the Communion chapel of the Basilica in Elche (a large prismatic lantern with a large cylindrical drum that starts from the own arches and an upper hemispherical dome), for its conservation, its proximity to Orihuela and its implementation during the century XVIII. Finally, a significant Dome Spanish Renaissance complete the selection: a cross vault of the Benavides Chapel of the Saint Francisco Convent in Baeza - Jaén-, designed by Andres of Vandelvira in the sixteenth century (a large hemispherical dome that starts from the own arcs). To simplify the calculation and standardize the work that have to be contrasted, all of them were considered with some similar characteristics: 30 cm constant thickness, the intercrossed arches were specifically analyzed and had identical loads, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. Regarding the calculation solutions, in general terms, the compressive stresses predominate, influencing on it the joint collaboration of the filling material on the vault, the vault itself, the thick side walls, the buttresses and the top cover weight . In addition, the three solutions are suitable, being the Orihuela one the safest and the Baeza one the riskiest for its large dimensions. Thus, the idea of intercrossed arches with suitable thickness would allow carry out the heaviest lantern and this would confirm it as a Renaissance architectural typology built in stone.

It was published by Clarendon Harris in the Worcester village directory, July 1829. Scale [1:3,960]. Covers the central area of the City of Worcester, Massachusetts, Main Street to Summer Street, Belmont Street to Franklin Street. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (in Feet) (Fipszone 2001). All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as roads, drainage, residences, businesses, cemeteries, and more. Buildings are shown with keyed numbers that correspond to entries in the Worcester village directory. The map includes illustrations of: New Unitarian Church -- Court House -- Town Hall -- South Meeting House -- Antiquarian Hall. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps of Massachusetts from the Harvard Map Collection. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features. The selection represents a range of regions, originators, ground condition dates (1755-1922), scales, and purposes. The digitized selection includes maps of: the state, Massachusetts counties, town surveys, coastal features, real property, parks, cemeteries, railroads, roads, public works projects, etc.

Recent coccoliths from 74 surface sediment samples recovered from the southeastern Pacific off Chile were examined quantitatively to investigate modern regional gradients of sea surface productivity and temperature. All findings are based on coccolith accumulation rates. Therefore an approach was designed to estimate recent sedimentation rates based on 210Pb and bulk chemistry analyses of the same set of surface samples. Highest total coccolith accumulation rates were found off north-central Chile, where seasonal upwelling takes place. Based on amultiple linear regression between calculated coccolith accumulation rates andWorld Ocean Atlas derived sea surface temperatures, a calibrationmodel to reconstruct annual average temperatures of the uppermost 75 mof thewater column is provided. Themodelwas cross-validated and the SST estimateswere compared with SST observed and SST estimates based on diatoms and planktonic foraminifera, showing a good correlation.

Terrigenous sediment supply, marine transport, and depositional processes along tectonically active margins are key to decoding turbidite successions as potential archives of climatic and seismic forcings. Sequence stratigraphic models predict coarse-grained sediment delivery to deep-marine sites mainly during sea-level fall and lowstand. Marine siliciclastic deposition during transgressions and highstands has been attributed to sustained connectivity between terrigenous sources and marine sinks facilitated by narrow shelves. To decipher the controls on Holocene highstand turbidite deposition, we analyzed 12 sediment cores from spatially discrete, coeval turbidite systems along the Chile margin (29° - 40°S) with changing climatic and geomorphic characteristics but uniform changes in sea level. Sediment cores from intraslope basins in north-central Chile (29° - 33°S) offshore a narrow to absent shelf record a shut-off of turbidite deposition during the Holocene due to postglacial aridification. In contrast, core sites in south-central Chile (36° - 40°S) offshore a wide shelf record frequent turbidite deposition during highstand conditions. Two core sites are linked to the Biobío river-canyon system and receive sediment directly from the river mouth. However, intraslope basins are not connected via canyons to fluvial systems but yield even higher turbidite frequencies. High sediment supply combined with a wide shelf and an undercurrent moving sediment toward the shelf edge appear to control Holocene turbidite sedimentation and distribution. Shelf undercurrents may play an important role in lateral sediment transport and supply to the deep sea and need to be accounted for in sediment-mass balances.
