Temperature dependent photoemission studies on lightly doped (x = 0.025) sodium tungsten bronzes, NaxWO3 have been investigated by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results show evidence for polaron formation at the valence band edge and the photoemission spectra taken in different modes of the electron analyzer suggest that the density of states at the valence band edge gradually moves to other k-points in the Brillouin zone with increasing temperature and explain the dynamics of polarons in the insulating disordered sodium tungsten bronzes. A strong electron-phonon interaction which limits the electronic mobility of semiconductors can also have significant effects on phonon frequencies. The latter is the key to the use of Raman spectroscopy for nondestructive characterization of doping in graphene-based devices. Using in situ Raman scattering from a single-layer MoS2 electrochemically top-gated field-effect transistor (FET), we show softening and broadening of the A(1g) phonon with electron doping, whereas the other Raman-active E-2g(1) mode remains essentially inert. Confirming these results with first-principles density functional theory based calculations, we use group theoretical arguments to explain why the A(1g) mode specifically exhibits a strong sensitivity to electron doping. Our work opens up the use of Raman spectroscopy in probing the level of doping in single-layer MoS2-based FETs, which have a high on-off ratio and are of technological significance.

Anomalous temperature dependence of Raman phonon wavenumbers attributed to phononphonon anharmonic interactions has been studied in two different families of pyrochlore titanates. We bring out the role of the ionic size of titanium and the inherent vacancies of pyrochlore in these anomalies by studying the effect of replacement of Ti4?+ by Zr4?+ in Sm2Ti2O7 and by stuffing Ho3?+ in place of Ti4?+ in Ho2Ti2O7 with appropriate oxygen stoichiometry. Our results show that an increase in the concentration of the larger ion, i.e. Zr4?+ or Ho3?+, reduces the phonon anomalies, thus implying a decrease in the phononphonon anharmonic interactions. In addition, we find signatures of coupling between a phonon and crystal field transition in Sm2Ti2O7, manifested as an unusual increase in the phonon intensity with increasing temperature. A careful comparison of the experimental results reported in the literature reveals different variations of the melting temperature even for the same materials. Though there are different theoretical models, thermodynamic model has been extensively used to understand different variations of size-dependent melting of nanoparticles. There are different hypotheses such as homogeneous melting (HMH), liquid nucleation and growth (LNG) and liquid skin melting (LSM) to resolve different variations of melting temperature as reported in the literature. HMH and LNG account for the linear variation where as LSM is applied to understand the nonlinear behaviour in the plot of melting temperature against reciprocal of particle size. However, a bird's eye view reveals that either HMH or LSM has been extensively used by experimentalists. It has also been observed that not a single hypothesis can explain the size-dependent melting in the complete range. Therefore we describe an approach which can predict the plausible hypothesis for a given data set of the size-dependent melting temperature. A variety of data have been analyzed to ascertain the hypothesis and to test the approach.

The enantiospecific total synthesis of silphiperfol-6-ene has been accomplished starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-limonene, employing a rhodium carbenoid insertion into the CH bond of a tertiary methyl group. A substrate dependent competitive insertion of the rhodium carbenoid in the gamma- and beta-CH bonds to form cyclopentanone and cyclobutanones, respectively, has been described. Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CPKs) constitute a unique family of kinases involved in many physiological responses in plants. Biochemical and kinetic properties of a recombinant Swainsona canescens calcium-dependent protein kinase (ScCPK1) were examined in this study. The optimum pH and temperature for activity were pH 7.5 and 37 degrees C, respectively. Substrate phosphorylation activity of ScCPK1 was calmodulin (CaM) independent. Yet CaM antagonists, W7 N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalene sulphonamide] and calmidazolium inhibited the activity with IC50 values of 750 nM and 350 pM, respectively. Both serine and threonine residues were found to be phosphorylated in auto-phosphorylated ScCPK1 and in histone III-S phosphorylated by ScCPK1. The Ca2+] for half maximal activity (K-0.5) was found to be 0.4 mu M for ScCPK1 with histone III-S as substrate. Kinetic analysis showed that Km of ScCPK1 for histone III-S was 4.8 mu M. These data suggest that ScCPK1 is a functional Ser/Thr kinase, regulated by calcium, and may have a role in Ca2+-mediated signaling in S. canescens. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3)-0.15PbTiO(3) (0.85PMN-0.15PT) ferroelectric relaxor thin films have been deposited on La0.5Sr0.5CoO3/(111) Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si by pulsed laser ablation by varying the oxygen partial pressures from 50 mTorr to 400 mTorr. The X-ray diffraction pattern reveals a pyrochlore free polycrystalline film. The grain morphology of the deposited films was studied using scanning electron microscopy and was found to be affected by oxygen pressure. By employing dynamic contact-electrostatic force microscopy we found that the distribution of polar nanoregions is majorly affected by oxygen pressure. Finally, the electric field induced switching in these films is discussed in terms of domain wall pinning.

This study deals with tailoring of the surface morphology, microstructure, and electrochemical properties of Sn thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering with different deposition rates. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy are used to characterize the film surface morphology. Electrochemical properties of Sn thin film are measured and compared by cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge cycle data at a constant current density. Sn thin film fabricated with a higher deposition rate exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 798 mAh g(-1) but reduced to 94 mAh g(-1) at 30th cycle. Film deposited with lower deposition rate delivered 770 mAh g(-1) during 1st cycle with improved capacity retention of 521 mAh g(-1) on 30th cycle. Comparison of electrochemical performances of these films has revealed important distinctions, which are associated with the surface morphology and hence on rate of deposition. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Hexagonal Dy(OH)(3) and cubic Dy2O3 nanorods were prepared by hydrothermal method. Dy(OH)(3) nanorods was directly obtained at 180 degrees C for 20 h after hydrothermal treatment whereas subsequently heat treatment at 750 degrees C for 2 h gives pure cubic Dy2O3. SEM micrographs reveal that needle shaped rods with different sizes were observed in both the phases. TEM results also confirm this. The TL response of hexagonal Dy(OH)(3) and cubic Dy2O3 nanorods have been analyzed for gamma-irradiation over a wide range of exposures (1-5 kGy). TL glow peak intensity increases with gamma dose in both the phases. The activation energy (E), order of kinetics (6), and frequency factor (s) for both the phases have been determined using Chen's peak shape method. The simple glow curve shape, structure and linear response to gamma-irradiation over a large span of exposures makes the cubic Dy2O3 as a useful dosimetric material to estimate high exposures of gamma-rays. Layer-wise, distance-dependent orientational relaxation of water confined in reverse micelles (RM) is studied using theoretical and computational tools. We use both a newly constructed ``spins on a ring'' (SOR) Ising-type model (with Shore-Zwanzig rotational dynamics) and atomistic simulations with explicit water. Our study explores the effect of reverse micelle size and role of intermolecular correlations, compromised by the presence of a highly polar surface, on the distance (from the interface) dependence of water relaxation. The ``spins on a ring'' model can capture some aspects of distance dependence of relaxation, such as acceleration of orientational relaxation at intermediate layers. In atomistic simulations, layer-wise decomposition of hydrogen bond formation pattern clearly reveals that hydrogen bond arrangement of water at a certain distance away from the surface can remain frustrated due to the interaction with the polar surface head groups. This layer-wise analysis also reveals the presence of a non-monotonic slow relaxation component which can be attributed to this frustration effect and which is accentuated in small to intermediate size RMs. For large size RMs, the long time component decreases monotonically from the interface to the interior of the RMs with slowest relaxation observed at the interface. We present a model of identical coupled two-state stochastic units, each of which in isolation is governed by a fixed refractory period. The nonlinear coupling between units directly affects the refractory period, which now depends on the global state of the system and can therefore itself become time dependent. At weak coupling the array settles into a quiescent stationary state. Increasing coupling strength leads to a saddle node bifurcation, beyond which the quiescent state coexists with a stable limit cycle of nonlinear coherent oscillations. We explicitly determine the critical coupling constant for this transition.

Hg0.2Cd0.8Te nanorods were synthesized via solvothermal route using an air-stable Na2Te-O-3. The structural and morphological studies were done by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The diameters of the nanorods were found to be 20-50 nm. The growth of the nanorods were facilitated due to the use of CTAB as surfactant. The temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) studies between 10-300 K show three prominent PL bands in 0.5-0.7 eV and are attributed to defect centers. The features like temperature independent peak energy and quite sensitive PL intensity which shows a thermal quenching behavior indicate that the defects are related to the compositional disorder.

We reconsider standard uniaxial fatigue test data obtained from handbooks. Many S-N curve fits to such data represent the median life and exclude load-dependent variance in life. Presently available approaches for incorporating probabilistic aspects explicitly within the S-N curves have some shortcomings, which we discuss. We propose a new linear S-N fit with a prespecified failure probability, load-dependent variance, and reasonable behavior at extreme loads. We fit our parameters using maximum likelihood, show the reasonableness of the fit using Q-Q plots, and obtain standard error estimates via Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed fitting method may be used for obtaining S-N curves from the same data as already available, with the same mathematical form, but in cases in which the failure probability is smaller, say, 10 % instead of 50 %, and in which the fitted line is not parallel to the 50 % (median) line.

Room temperature, uniaxial compression creep experiments were performed on micro-/nano-sized pillars (having diameters in the range of 250-2000 nm) of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to investigate the influence of sample size on the time-dependent plastic deformation behavior in amorphous alloys. Experimental results reveal that plastic deformation indeed occurs at ambient temperature and at stresses that are well below the nominal quasi-static yield stress. At a given stress, higher total strains accrue in the smaller specimens. In all cases, plastic deformation was found to be devoid of shear bands, i.e., it occurs in homogeneous manner. The stress exponent obtained from the slope of the linear relation between strain rate and applied stress also shows a strong size effect, which is rationalized in terms of the amount of free volume created during deformation and the surface-to-volume ratio of the pillar. We revisit the assignment of Raman phonons of rare-earth titanates by performing Raman measurements on single crystals of O18 isotope-rich spin ice Dy2Ti2O718 and nonmagnetic Lu2Ti2O718 pyrochlores and compare the results with their O16 counterparts. We show that the low-wavenumber Raman modes below 250 cm-1 are not due to oxygen vibrations. A mode near 200 cm-1, commonly assigned as F2g phonon, which shows highly anomalous temperature dependence, is now assigned to a disorder-induced Raman active mode involving Ti4+ vibrations. Moreover, we address here the origin of the new Raman mode, observed below TC similar to 110 K in Dy2Ti2O7, through a simultaneous pressure-dependent and temperature-dependent Raman study. Our study confirms the new mode to be a phonon mode. We find that dTC/dP = + 5.9 K/GPa. Temperature dependence of other phonons has also been studied at various pressures up to similar to 8 GPa. We find that pressure suppresses the anomalous temperature dependence. The role of the inherent vacant sites present in the pyrochlore structure in the anomalous temperature dependence is also discussed. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
