The atmospheric concentrations of the acid gases SO2, HCl, and HF were measured during austral summer 2001 in the summit crater area of Villarrica volcano using 'filter packs'. These data were collected in order to assess the acid gas hazards to tourists who ascend the volcano. The authors compared their acid gas concentration results with exposure limits outlined by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH-United States of America). The authors conclude that tourists who visit the summit crater of Villarrica may be exposed to non-lethal concentrations of SO2 and HCl that exceed the recommended exposure limits defined by NIOSH, while atmospheric concentrations of HF do not exceed the recommended exposure limits.

Purpose: Nicardipine is a member of a family of calcium channel blockers named dihydropiridines that are known to be photolabile and may cause phototoxicity. It is therefore vital to develop analytical method which can study the photodegradation of nicardipine. Method: Forced acid degradation of nicardipine was conducted by heating 12 ml of 1 mg/ml nicardipine with 3 ml of 2.5 M HCl for two hours. A gradient HPLC medthod was developed using Agilent Technologies 1200 series quaternary system. Separation was achieved with a Hichrome (250 x 4.6 mm) 5 μm C18 reversed phase column and mobile phase composition of 70% A(100%v/v water) and 30% B(99%v/v acetonitrile + 1%v/v formic acid) at time zero, composition of A and B was then charged to 60%v/v A;40%v/v B at 10minutes, 50%v/v A; 50%v/v B at 30minutes and 70%v/v A; 30%v/v B at 35minutes. 20μl of 0.8mg/ml of nicardipine degradation was injected at room temperature (25oC). The gradient method was transferred onto a HPLC-ESI-MS system (HP 1050 series - AQUAMAX mass detector) and analysis conducted with an acid degradation concentration of 0.25mg/ml and 20μl injection volume. ESI spectra were acquired in positive ionisation mode with MRM 0-600 m/z. Results: Eleven nicardipine degradation products were detected in the HPLC analysis and the resolution (RS) between the respective degradants where 1.0, 1.2, 6.0, 0.4, 1.7, 3.7, 1.8, 1.0, and 1.7 respectively. Nine degradation products were identified in the ESI spectra with the respective m/z ratio; 171.0, 166.1, 441.2, 423.2, 455.2, 455.2, 331.1, 273.1, and 290.1. The possible molecular formulae for each degradants were ambiguously determined. Conclusion: A sensitive and specific method was developed for the analysis of nicardipine degradants. Method enables detection and quantification of nicardipine degradation products that can be used for the study of the kinetics of nicardipine degradation processes.

An interlaboratory comparison (ILC) was conducted to evaluate the proficiency of multiple laboratories to quantify dimethylsulfide (DMS) in aqueous solution. Ten participating laboratories were each supplied with blind duplicate test solutions containing dimethylsulfoniopropionate hydrochloride (DMSP HCl) dissolved in acidified artificial seawater. The test solutions were prepared by the coordinating laboratory from a DMSP HCl reference material that was synthesized and purity certified for this purpose. A concentration range was specified for the test solutions and the participating laboratories were requested to dilute them as required for their analytical procedure, together with the addition of excess alkali under gas-tight conditions to convert the DMSP to DMS. Twenty-two DMS concentrations and their estimated expanded measurement uncertainties (95% confidence level) were received from the laboratories. With two exceptions, the within-laboratory variability was 5% or less and the between-laboratory variability was ~ 25%. The magnitude of expanded measurement uncertainties reported from all participants ranged from 1% to 33% relative to the result. The information gained from this pilot ILC indicated the need for further test sample distribution studies of this type so that participating laboratories can identify systematic errors in their analysis procedures and realistically evaluate their measurement uncertainty. The outcome of ILC studies provides insights into the comparability of data in the global surface seawater DMS database.

The effects of ocean acidification (OA) on nitrous oxide (N2O) production and on the community composition of ammonium oxidizing archaea (AOA) were examined in the northern and southern sub-polar and polar Atlantic Ocean. Two research cruises were performed during June 2012 between the North Sea and Arctic Greenland and Barent Seas, and in January–February 2013 to the Antarctic Scotia Sea. Seven stations were occupied in all during which shipboard experimental manipulations of the carbonate chemistry were performed through additions of NaHCO3−+HCl in order to examine the impact of short-term (48 h for N2O and between 96 and 168 h for AOA) exposure to control and elevated conditions of OA. During each experiment, triplicate incubations were performed at ambient conditions and at 3 lowered levels of pH which varied between 0.06 and 0.4 units according to the total scale and which were targeted at CO2 partial pressures of ~500, 750 and 1000 µatm. The AOA assemblage in both Arctic and Antarctic regions was dominated by two major archetypes that represent the marine AOA clades most often detected in seawater. There were no significant changes in AOA assemblage composition between the beginning and end of the incubation experiments. N2O production was sensitive to decreasing pHT at all stations and decreased by between 2.4% and 44% with reduced pHT values of between 0.06 and 0.4. The reduction in N2O yield from nitrification was directly related to a decrease of between 28% and 67% in available NH3 as a result of the pH driven shift in the NH3:NH4+ equilibrium. The maximum reduction in N2O production at conditions projected for the end of the 21st century was estimated to be 0.82 Tg N y−1.

Ab initio simulations of a single molecule of HCl in liquid dimethyl imidazolium chloride [dmim][Cl] show that the acidic proton exists as a symmetric, linear ClHCl- species. Details of the solvation structure around this molecule are given. The proton-transfer process was investigated by applying a force along the antisymmetric stretch coordinate until the molecule broke. Changes in the free energy and local solvation structure during this process were investigated. In the reaction mechanism identified, a free chloride approaches the proton from the side. As the original ClHCl- distorts and the incoming chloride forms a new bond to the proton, one of the original chlorine atoms is expelled and a new linear molecule is formed.

The photodissociation and photoionization dynamics of HBr via low-n Rydberg and ion-pair states was studied by using 2 + 1 REMPI spectroscopy and velocity map imaging of photoelectrons. Two-photon excitation at about 9.4–10 eV was used to prepare rotationally selected excited states. Following absorption of the third photon the unperturbed F 1Δ(2) and i 3Δ(2) states ionize directly into the ground vibrational state of the molecular ion according to the Franck–Condon principle and upon preservation of the ion core. In case of the V 1Σ+(0+) ion-pair state and the perturbed E 1Σ+(0+), g 3Σ−(0+), and H 1Σ+(0+) Rydberg states the absorption of the third photon additionally results in a long vibrational progression of HBr+ in the X 2Π state as well as formation of electronically excited atomic photofragments. The vibrational excitation of the molecular ion is explained by autoionization of repulsive superexcited states into the ground state of the molecular ion. In contrast to HCl, the perturbed Rydberg states of HBr show strong participation of the direct ionization process, with ionic core preservation.

The comparative study of the voltammetry of H[NTf2], HCl and H[AuCl4] in [C(4)mim][NTf2] has provided an insight into the influence of protons on the reduction of [AuCl4](-) at Au, Pt or glassy carbon (GC) electrodes, and has allowed the identification of an unprecedented proton-induced electroless deposition of Au on relatively inert GC surfaces. For the first time, clear evidence of the quantitative formation of [HCl2](-) has been obtained in HCl/[C(4)mim][NTf2] mixtures, and the electrochemical behavior of these mixtures analyzed. In particular, a significant shift of the dissociation equilibrium toward the formation of chloride and the solvated proton (H-IL(+)), following electrochemical reduction of H-IL(+) has been observed in the time-scale of the experiments.

The hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene over supported palladium catalysts has been studied. The palladium catalysts: deactivate as the reaction proceeds due to the HCl formed as by-product. The effect of the addition of sodium compounds has been analysed for the neutralisation of HCl. When NaOH was added to the reaction mixture, no beneficial effect was observed due to the detrimental effect of the alkaline medium on the textural and metallic properties of the catalysts. Doping the support with NaOH prior to impregnation with the metal precursor leads (after calcination and reduction) to catalysts with better activity and tolerance to deactivation, especially those obtained when using PdCl2 as the metal precursor. Low metal dispersion and the capture of chloride by forming NaCl are the: main factors contributing to the: improved catalytic properties. Finally, doping the catalysts with NaOH or NaNO3, after reduction of the metal precursor leads to a moderate increase in initial activity and final conversion, although NaOH impregnation also gave rise to support corrosion and metal dispersion modification. A computational approach to predict the thermodynamics for forming a variety of imidazolium-based salts and ionic liquids from typical starting materials is described. The gas-phase proton and methyl cation acidities of several protonating and methylating agents, as well as the proton and methyl cation affinities of many important methyl-, nitro-, and cyano- substituted imidazoles, have been calculated reliably by using the computationally feasible DFT (B3LYP) and MP2 (extrapolated to the complete basis set limit) methods. These accurately calculated proton and methyl cation affinities of neutrals and anions are used in conjunction with an empirical approach based on molecular volumes to estimate the lattice enthalpies and entropies of ionic liquids, organic solids, and organic liquids. These quantities were used to construct a thermodynamic cycle for salt formation to reliably predict the ability to synthesize a variety of salts including ones with potentially high energetic densities. An adjustment of the gas phase thermodynamic cycle to account for solid- and liquid-phase chemistries provides the best overall assessment of salt formation and stability. This has been applied to imidazoles (the cation to be formed) with alkyl, nitro, and cyano substituents. The proton and methyl cation donors studied were as follows: HCl, HBr, HI, (HO)(2)SO2, HSO3CF3 (TfOH), and HSO3(C6H4)CH3 (TsOH); CH3Cl, CH3Br, CH3I, (CH3O)(2)SO2, CH3SO3CF3 (TfOCH3) and CH3SO3(C6H4)CH3 (TsOCH3). As substitution of the cation with electron-withdrawing groups increases, the triflate reagents appear to be the best overall choice as protonating and methylating agents. Even stronger alkylating agents should be considered to enhance the chances of synthetic success. When using the enthalpies of reaction for the gas-phase reactants (eq 6) to form a salt, a cutoff value of - 13 kcal mol(-1) or lower (more negative) should be used as the minimum value for predicting whether a salt can be synthesized.

The particle size characteristics and encapsulation efficiency of microparticles prepared using triglyceride materials and loaded with two model water-soluble drugs were evaluated. Two emulsification procedures based on o/w and w/o/w methodologies were compared to a novel spray congealing procedure. After extensive modification of both emulsification methods, encapsulation efficiencies of 13.04% tetracycline HCl and 11.27% lidocaine HCl were achievable in a Witepsol (R)-based microparticle. This compares to much improved encapsulation efficiencies close to 100% for the spray congealing method, which was shown to produce spherical particles of similar to 58 mu m. Drug release studies from a Witepsol (R) formulation loaded with lidocaine HCl showed a temperature-dependent release mechanism, which displayed diffusion-controlled kinetics at temperatures similar to 25 degrees C, but exhibited almost immediate release when triggered using temperatures close to that of skin. Therefore, such a system may find application in topical semi-solid formulations, where a temperature-induced burst release is preferred.

Polyol sugars, displaying a plurality Of hydroxyl groups, were shown to modulate tetra hydroxyborate (borate) cross-linking in lidocaine hydrochloride containing poly(vinyl alcohol) scini-solid hydrogels. Without polyol, demixing of borate cross-linked PVA hydrogels into two distinct phases was noticeable upon lidocaine hydrochloride addition, preventing further use as a topical System. D-Mannitol incorporation was found to be particularly suitable in cicumventing network constriction induced by ionic and pH effects upon adding the hydrochloride salt of lidocaine. A test formulation (4% w/v lidocaine HCl, 2% W/V D-mannitol, 10% w/v PVA and 2.5%, w/v THB) was shown to constitute an effective delivery system, which was characterised by an initial burst release and a drug release mechanism dependent on temperature, changing from a diffusion-controlled system to one with the properties of a reservoir system. The novel flow properties and innocuous adhesion of PVA-tetrahydroxyborate hydrogels Support their application for drug delivery to exposed epithelial surfaces, Such as lacerated wounds. Furthermore, addition of a polyol, such as mannitol, allows incorporation of soluble salt forms of active therapeutic agents by modulation of cross-linking density. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
