We report on the effect of various alkaline-earth metal oxides on the broadband infrared luminescence covering 1000-1600 nm wavelength region from bismuth-doped silicate glasses. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the infrared luminescence and the fluorescent lifetime is more than 200 nm and 400 mu s, respectively. The fluorescent intensity decreases with increasing basicity of host glasses. Besides the broadband infrared luminescence, luminescence centered at 640 nm was also observed, which should be ascribed to Bi2+ rather than to the familiar Bi3+. We suggest that the infrared luminescence should be assigned to the X-2 (2)Pi (3/2) -> X-1 (2)Pi(1/2) transition of BiO molecules dispersed in the host glasses. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. We prepare bismuth-doped borosilicate glasses and the luminescence properties in infrared wavelength region are investigated. Transmission spectrum, fluorescence spectrum and fluorescence decay curve are measured. The glasses exhibit a broad infrared luminescence peaking at 1340nm with the full width at half maximum of about 205nm, and lifetime of 273 mu s when excited by an 808-nm laser diode. The glasses are promising materials for broadband optical amplifiers and tunable lasers.

The broadband emission in the 1.2 similar to 1.6 mu m region from Li2O-Al2O3-ZnO-SiO2 ( LAZS) glass codoped with 0.01mol.% Cr2O3 and 1.0mol.% Bi2O3 when pumped by the 808nm laser at room temperature is not initiated from Cr4+ ions, but from bismuth, which is remarkably different from the results reported by Batchelor et al. The broad similar to 1300nm emission from Bi2O3-containing LAZS glasses possesses a FWHM ( Full Width at Half Maximum) more than 250nm and a fluorescent lifetime longer than 500 mu s when excited by the 808nm laser. These glasses might have the potential applications in the broadly tunable lasers and the broadband fiber amplifiers. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Broadband infrared luminescence covering the optical telecommunication wavelength region of 0, E and S bands was observed in GeO2: Bi, M (M = Ga, B) glasses prepared by conventional melting-quenching technique. The luminescence with a maximum at around 1320 nm possesses a full width at half maximum larger than 300 nm and mean fluorescent lifetime longer than 500 mus when excited by an 808 nm-laser. These glasses may have potential applications in widely tunable laser and super-broadband optical amplifier for the optical communications. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Broadband neat-infrared emission from transparent Ni2+-doped sodium aluminosilicate glass-cermaics is observed. The broad emission is centered at 1290 nm and covers the whole telecommunication wavelength region (1100-1700 nm) with full width at half maximum of about 340 nm. The observed infrared emission could be attributed to the T-3(2)(F) -> (3)A(2)(F) transition of octahedral Ni2+ ions that occupy high-field sites in nanocrystals. The product of the lifetime and the stimulated emission cross section is 2.15 x 10(-24) cm(2)s. It is suggested that Ni2+-doped sodium aluminosilicate glass ceramics have potential applications in tunable broadband light sources and broadband amplifiers.

This paper describes a measurement on a GaAs quantum well waveguide with a high built in field across the quantum wells at a wavelength far from the bandedge. The device structure used for the measurement has been fabricated at STC Technology Ltd and is that of a standard laser ridge structure. In fabrication double heterostructure layers are grown on a [001] n + GaAs substrate, with the active region containing two intrinsic GaAs quantum wells of 10nm thickness separated by 10nm. A 4μm wide ridge is etched to provide transverse optical guiding. The experimental work has involved the use of 1.06μm wavelength light from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Any induced change in refractive index is determined by measuring the change in transmission of the quantum well waveguide Fabry-Perot cavity. The waveguide is placed on a Peltier temperature controller to allow thermal tuning.

The dithiophene donor-acceptor copolymers that are bridged either with carbon (C-PCPDTBT) or silicon atoms (Si-PCPDTBT) belong to a promising family of materials for use in photoactive layers for organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs). In this work, we implement the non-destructive Spectroscopic Ellipsometry technique in the near infrared to the far ultraviolet spectral region in combination with advanced theoretical modeling to investigate the vertical distribution of the C-PCPDTBT and Si-PCPDTBT polymer and fullerene ([6,6]-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl ester - PC70BM) phases in the blend, as well as the effect of the polymer-to-fullerene ratio on the distribution mechanism. It was found that the C-PCPDTBT:PC70BM blends have donor-enriched top regions and acceptor-enriched bottom regions, whereas the donor and acceptor phases are more homogeneously intermixed in the Si-PCPDTBT:PC70BM blends. We suggest that the chemical incompatibility of the two phases as expressed by the difference in their surface energy, may be a key element in promoting the segregation of the lower surface phase to the top region of the photoactive layer. We found that the increase of the photoactive layer thickness reduces the polymer enrichment at the cathode, producing a more homogeneous phase distribution of donor and acceptor in the bulk that leads to the increase of the OPV efficiency. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

GaAs/AlAs/GaAlAs double barrier quantum well (DBQW) structures are employed for making 3-5 um photovoltaic infrared (IR) detectors with a peak detectivity of 5 x 10(11) cm Hz(1/2)/W at 80 K. Double crystal X-ray diffraction is combined with synchrotron radiation X-ray analysis to determine successfully the exact thickness of GaAs, AlAs and GaAlAs sublayers. The interband photovoltaic (PV) spectra of the linear array of the detectors are measured directly by edge excitation method, providing the information about spatial separation processes of photogenerated carriers in the multiquantum wells and the distribution of built-in field in the active region. The spectral response of the IR photocurrent of the devices is also measured and compared with the temperature dependent IR absorption of the DBQW samples in order to get a better understanding of the bias-controlled optical and transport behavior of the detector photoresponse and thus to optimize the detector performance. Both Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) grazing incidence reflectivity and FTIR transmission methods have been used to study GaN films grown on alpha-Al2O3 (0001) substrates by atmospheric pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition and low pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The results show that in the frequency range from 400 to 3500 cm(-1) the signal-to-noise ratio of the FTIR grazing incidence measurement is far higher than that of the FTIR transmission measurement. Some new vibrational structures appearing in the former measurement have been discussed. The features around 1460 and 1300 cm(-1) are tentatively assigned to scissoring and wagging local vibrational modes of CH2 in GaN, respectively. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. We have observed an extremely narrow absorption spectrum due to bound-to-continuum transition in GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs). Its linewidth is only about one tenth of the values reported previously. Our calculation indicates that the broadening of the excited state in the continuum has little contribution to the absorption linewidth. We have grown a sample whose MQW region contains two kinds of wells with a minor thickness inhomogeneity. Its resultant absorption linewidth is six times as large as that of homogeneous well sample, which is in good agreement with our theoretical analysis. Thus we can suggest that the wider absorption spectra reported by many authors may be due to the well width inhomogeneity. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(98)03430-5]

The not only lower but also uniform MEMS chip temperatures can he reached by selecting suitable boiling number range that ensures the nucleate boiling heat transfer. In this article, boiling heat transfer experiments in 10 silicon triangular microchannels with the hydraulic diameter of 55.4 mu m were performed using acetone as the working fluid, having the inlet liquid temperatures of 24-40 degrees C, mass fluxes of 96-360 kg/m(2)s, heat fluxes of 140-420 kW/m(2), and exit vapor mass qualities of 0.28-0.70. The above data range correspond to the boiling number from 1.574 x 10(-3) to 3.219 x 10(-3) and ensure the perfect nucleate boiling heat transfer region, providing a very uniform chip temperature distribution in both streamline and transverse directions. The boiling heat transfer coefficients determined by the infrared radiator image system were found to he dependent on the heat Axes only, not dependent on the mass Axes and the vapor mass qualities covering the above data range. The high-speed flow visualization shows that the periodic flow patterns take place inside the microchannel in the time scale of milliseconds, consisting of liquid refilling stage, bubble nucleation, growth and coalescence stage, and transient liquid film evaporation stage in a full cycle. The paired or triplet bubble nucleation sites can occur in the microchannel corners anywhere along the flow direction, accounting for the nucleate boiling heat transfer mode. The periodic boiling process is similar to a series of bubble nucleation, growth, and departure followed by the liquid refilling in a single cavity for the pool boiling situation. The chip temperature difference across the whole two-phase area is found to he small in a couple of degrees, providing a better thermal management scheme for the high heat flux electronic components. Chen's [11 widely accepted correlation for macrochannels and Bao et al.'s [21 correlation obtained in a copper capillary tube with the inside diameter of 1.95 mm using R11 and HCFC123 as working fluids can predict the present experimental data with accepted accuracy. Other correlations fail to predict the correct heat transfer coefficient trends. New heat transfer correlations are also recommended.

Layer-controlled hierarchical flowerlike AgIn(MoO4)(2) microstructures with "clean" surfaces using submicroplates as building blocks without introducing any template have been fabricated through a low-cost hydrothermal method. The near-infrared luminescence of lanthanide ion (Nd, Er, and Yb) doped AgIn(MoO4)(2) microstructures, in the 1300-1600 nm region, was discussed and is of particular interest for telecommunication applications. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize these materials.

CuIn(WO4)(2) porous nanospindles and nanorods were synthesized through a low-cost hydrothermal method without introducing any template or surfactants. An interesting formation mechanism, namely "oriented attachment", was observed for the growth of nanorods based on the experimental process and the anisotropic intrinsic crystalline structure of CuIn(WO4)(2), which is uncommon in such a system. The near-infrared luminescence of lanthanide ions (Er, Nd, Yb and Ho) doped CuIn(WO4)(2) nanostructures, especially in the 1300-1600 nm region, was discussed and of particular interest for telecommunications applications. X-Ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize these materials.

The IR spectrum and B-11 and Al-27 MAS NMR spectra of Al18B4O33 are presented and discussed in relation to the possible existence of boron atoms substituting for aluminum atoms. The IR spectrum shows that the strong vibrations of the BO3 groups are present in the 1 500 similar to1 200 cm(-1) region, and very weak bands of BO4 units art present in the region from 1 000 to 1 100 cm(-1). B-11 MAS NMR spectrum indicates that the strong signal for BOB units appears in the region from delta +5 to delta +20, and the very weak signal for BO4 units is at about delta -1, while Al-27 MAS NMR spectrum shows five peaks at about delta +62, +42.1, +14, -4.7 and -6.4, originating from AlO4, AlO4, AlO5, AlO6 and AlO6, respectively, These results reveal that there are minor BO4 units in Al18B4O33, indicating that a small amount of B atoms substitute for Al atoms in the 4-fold coordination.
