This paper reviews the relationship between public sector investment and private sector investment through government expenditures financed by government bonds in the Japanese economy. This study hypothesizes that deficit financing by bond issues does not crowd out private sector investment, and this finance method may crowd in. Thus the government increases bond issues and sells them in the domestic and international financial markets. This method does not affect interest rates because they are insensitive to government expenditures and they depend on interest rates levels in the international financial market more than in the domestic financial market because of globalization and integration among financial markets.

By analyzing a comprehensive dataset on transport transactions in Japan, we describe a directional imbalance in freight rates by transport mode and examine its potential sources, such as economies of density and directionally imbalanced transport flow. There are certain numbers of observed links which show asymmetric transport costs. Instrumental variable analysis is used to show that economies of density account for deviation from symmetric freight rates between prefectures. Our results show that a 10% increase in outbound transport flow relative to inbound transport flow leads to a 2.1% decrease in outbound freight rate relative to inbound freight rate.

This paper examines the conventional assumption that bilateral transport costs are symmetric. We develop an economic geography model with transport sector in which asymmetric freight rates can occur as a result of density economies. Comparing this to models without density economies, we show that agglomeration of economic activities is more likely to emerge and that multiple equilibria can emerge for some parameters. Then we show the change in its bifurcation and stability of equilibrium and conclude that economies of density in transport flows can act as an agglomeration force.

This paper investigates how exchange rates affect the utilization of a free trade agreement (FTA) scheme in trading. Changes in exchange rates affect FTA utilization by two ways. The first way is by changing the excess profits gained by utilizing the FTA scheme, and the second way is by promoting the compliance of rules of origin. Our theoretical models predict that the depreciation of exporters' currency against that of importers enhances the likelihood of FTA utilization through those two channels. Furthermore, our empirical analysis, which is based on rich tariff-line-level data on the utilization of FTA schemes in Korea's imports from ASEAN countries, supports the theoretical prediction. We also show that the effects are smaller for more differentiated products.

This work studies the physiology of Schizosaccharomyces pombe strain 938 in the production of white wine with high malic acid levels as the sole fermentative yeast, as well as in mixed and sequential fermentations with Saccharomyces cerevisiae Cru Blanc. The induction of controlled maloalcoholic fermentation through the use of Schizosaccharomyces spp. is now being viewed with much interest. The acetic, malic and pyruvic acid concentrations, relative density and pH of the musts were measured over the entire fermentation period. In all fermentations in which Schizo. pombe 938 was involved, nearly all the malic acid was consumed and moderate acetic concentrations produced. The urea content and alcohol level of these wines were notably lower than in those made with Sacch. cerevisiae Cru Blanc alone. The pyruvic acid concentration was significantly higher in Schizo. pombe fermentations. The sensorial properties of the different final wines varied widely.

A Ca2+-dependent synaptic vesicle-recycling pathway emanating from the plasma membrane adjacent to the dense body at the active zone has been demonstrated by blocking pinch-off of recycling membrane by using the Drosophila mutant, shibire. Exposure of wild-type Drosophila synapses to low Ca2+/high Mg2+ saline is shown here to block this active zone recycling pathway at the stage in which invaginations of the plasma membrane develop adjacent to the dense body. These observations, in combination with our previous demonstration that exposure to high Ca2+ causes docked vesicles to accumulate in the identical location where active zone endocytosis occurs, suggest the possibility that a vesicle-recycling pathway emanating from the active zone may exist that is stimulated by exposure to elevated Ca2+, thereby causing an increase in vesicle recycling, and is suppressed by exposure to low Ca2+ saline, thereby blocking newly forming vesicles at the invagination stage. The presence of a Ca2+-dependent endocytotic pathway at the active zone opens up the following possibilities: (i) electron microscopic omega-shaped images (and their equivalent, freeze fracture dimples) observed at the active zone adjacent to the dense body could represent endocytotic images (newly forming vesicles) rather than exocytotic images; (ii) vesicles observed attached to the plasma membrane adjacent to the dense body could represent newly formed vesicles rather than vesicles docked for release of transmitter.
