In the determination of the response time of u.h.v. damped capacitive impulse voltage dividers using the CIGRE IMR-1MS group (1) method and the arrangement suggested by the International Electrotechnical Commission (the I EC square loop),the surge impedance of the connecting lead has been found to influence the accuracy of determination. To avoid this difficulty,a new graphical procedure is proposed. As this method uses only those data points which can be determined with good accuracy, errors in response-time area evaluation do not influence the result.

A method of evaluating the transient electrical response of a solion diode when excited by different current stimuli is given. This method is extended to obtain the transient response of the solion when connected in a circuit. To illustrate the utility of this method a circuit incorporating a solion diode has been analyzed.

We report electrical property of a polycrystalline NdLiMo2O8 ceramics using complex impedance analysis. The material shows temperature dependent electrical relaxation phenomena. The d.c. conductivity shows typical Arrhenius behavior, when observed as a function of temperature. The a.c. conductivity is found to obey Jonscher's universal power law. The material was prepared in powder form by a standard solid-state reaction technique. Material formation and crystallinity have been confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. Impedance measurements have been performed over a range of temperatures and frequencies. The results have been analyzed in the complex plane formalism and suitable equivalent circuits have been proposed in different regions. The role of bulk and grain boundary effect in the overall electrical conduction process is discussed with proper justification. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

ZnO:Al thin films were prepared on glass and silicon substrates by the sol-gel spin coating method. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that a polycrystalline phase with a hexagonal structure appeared after annealing at 400 degrees C for 1 h. The transmittance increased from 91 to about 93% from pure ZnO films to ZnO film doped with 1 wt% Al and then decreased for 2 wt% Al. The optical band gap energy increased as the doping concentration was increased from 0.5 wt% to 1 wt% Al. The metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitors were fabricated using ZnO films deposited on silicon (100) substrates and electrical properties such as current versus voltage (I-V) and capacitance versus voltage (C-V) characteristics were studied. The electrical resistivity decreased and the leakage current increased with an increase of annealing temperature. The dielectric constant was found to be 3.12 measured at 1 MHz. The dissipation value for the film annealed at 300 degrees C was found to be 3.1 at 5 V. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Analytical solution is presented to convert a given driving-point impedance function (in s-domain) into a physically realisable ladder network with inductive coupling between any two sections and losses considered. The number of sections in the ladder network can vary, but its topology is assumed fixed. A study of the coefficients of the numerator and denominator polynomials of the driving-point impedance function of the ladder network, for increasing number of sections, led to the identification of certain coefficients, which exhibit very special properties. Generalised expressions for these specific coefficients have also been derived. Exploiting their properties, it is demonstrated that the synthesis method essentially turns out to be an exercise of solving a set of linear, simultaneous, algebraic equations, whose solution directly yields the ladder network elements. The proposed solution is novel, simple and guarantees a unique network. Presently, the formulation can synthesise a unique ladder network up to six sections.

In this paper, we investigate a numerical method for the solution of an inverse problem of recovering lacking data on some part of the boundary of a domain from the Cauchy data on other part for a variable coefficient elliptic Cauchy problem. In the process, the Cauchy problem is transformed into the problem of solving a compact linear operator equation. As a remedy to the ill-posedness of the problem, we use a projection method which allows regularization solely by discretization. The discretization level plays the role of regularization parameter in the case of projection method. The balancing principle is used for the choice of an appropriate discretization level. Several numerical examples show that the method produces a stable good approximate solution.

The nonlocal term in the nonlinear equations of Kirchhoff type causes difficulties when the equation is solved numerically by using the Newton-Raphson method. This is because the Jacobian of the Newton-Raphson method is full. In this article, the finite element system is replaced by an equivalent system for which the Jacobian is sparse. We derive quasi-optimal error estimates for the finite element method and demonstrate the results with numerical experiments.

A novel approach that can more effectively use the structural information provided by the traditional imaging modalities in multimodal diffuse optical tomographic imaging is introduced. This approach is based on a prior image-constrained-l(1) minimization scheme and has been motivated by the recent progress in the sparse image reconstruction techniques. It is shown that the proposed framework is more effective in terms of localizing the tumor region and recovering the optical property values both in numerical and gelatin phantom cases compared to the traditional methods that use structural information. We address the reconstruction problem in frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography (FDOCT) from under-sampled measurements within the framework of compressed sensing (CS). Specifically, we propose optimal sparsifying bases for accurate reconstruction by analyzing the backscattered signal model. Although one might expect Fourier bases to be optimal for the FDOCT reconstruction problem, it turns out that the optimal sparsifying bases are windowed cosine functions where the window is the magnitude spectrum of the laser source. Further, the windowed cosine bases can be phase locked, which allows one to obtain higher accuracy in reconstruction. We present experimental validations on real data. The findings reported in this Letter are useful for optimal dictionary design within the framework of CS-FDOCT. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

We address the problem of phase retrieval, which is frequently encountered in optical imaging. The measured quantity is the magnitude of the Fourier spectrum of a function (in optics, the function is also referred to as an object). The goal is to recover the object based on the magnitude measurements. In doing so, the standard assumptions are that the object is compactly supported and positive. In this paper, we consider objects that admit a sparse representation in some orthonormal basis. We develop a variant of the Fienup algorithm to incorporate the condition of sparsity and to successively estimate and refine the phase starting from the magnitude measurements. We show that the proposed iterative algorithm possesses Cauchy convergence properties. As far as the modality is concerned, we work with measurements obtained using a frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography experimental setup. The experimental results on real measured data show that the proposed technique exhibits good reconstruction performance even with fewer coefficients taken into account for reconstruction. It also suppresses the autocorrelation artifacts to a significant extent since it estimates the phase accurately.

Faraday-type electromagnetic flow meters are employed for measuring the flow rate of liquid sodium in fast breeder reactors. The calibration of such flow meters, owing to the required elaborative arrangements is rather difficult. On the other hand, theoretical approach requires solution of two coupled electromagnetic partial differential equation with profile of the flow and applied magnetic field as the inputs. This is also quite involved due to the 3D nature of the problem. Alternatively, Galerkin finite element method based numerical solution is suggested in the literature as an attractive option for the required calibration. Based on the same, a computer code in Matlab platform has been developed in this work with both 20 and 27 node brick elements. The boundary conditions are correctly defined and several intermediate validation exercises are carried out. Finally it is shown that the sensitivities predicted by the code for flow meters of four different dimensions agrees well with the results given by analytical expression, thereby providing strong validation. Sensitivity for higher flow rates, for which analytical approach does not exist, is shown to decrease with increase in flow velocity.

Purpose: Developing a computationally efficient automated method for the optimal choice of regularization parameter in diffuse optical tomography. Methods: The least-squares QR (LSQR)-type method that uses Lanczos bidiagonalization is known to be computationally efficient in performing the reconstruction procedure in diffuse optical tomography. The same is effectively deployed via an optimization procedure that uses the simplex method to find the optimal regularization parameter. The proposed LSQR-type method is compared with the traditional methods such as L-curve, generalized cross-validation (GCV), and recently proposed minimal residual method (MRM)-based choice of regularization parameter using numerical and experimental phantom data. Results: The results indicate that the proposed LSQR-type and MRM-based methods performance in terms of reconstructed image quality is similar and superior compared to L-curve and GCV-based methods. The proposed method computational complexity is at least five times lower compared to MRM-based method, making it an optimal technique. Conclusions: The LSQR-type method was able to overcome the inherent limitation of computationally expensive nature of MRM-based automated way finding the optimal regularization parameter in diffuse optical tomographic imaging, making this method more suitable to be deployed in real-time. We address the problem of sampling and reconstruction of two-dimensional (2-D) finite-rate-of-innovation (FRI) signals. We propose a three-channel sampling method for efficiently solving the problem. We consider the sampling of a stream of 2-D Dirac impulses and a sum of 2-D unit-step functions. We propose a 2-D causal exponential function as the sampling kernel. By causality in 2-D, we mean that the function has its support restricted to the first quadrant. The advantage of using a multichannel sampling method with causal exponential sampling kernel is that standard annihilating filter or root-finding algorithms are not required. Further, the proposed method has inexpensive hardware implementation and is numerically stable as the number of Dirac impulses increases.

The nanocomposites of xTiO(2)+(1-x)Ni0.53Cu0.12Zn0.35Fe2O4 (where 0 <= x >= 1) were prepared using microwave hydrothermal (M H) method at 165 degrees C/45 min. The as-synthesized powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The particle size of the powder varies from 18 to 35 nm. The as prepared powders were densified at 500 degrees C/30 min using microwave sintering method. The sintered composites were characterized by XRD and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The bulk densities of the present composites were increasing with the addition of TiO2. The grain sizes of all the composite vary between 65 nm and 90 nm. The addition of TiO2 to ferrite increased the dielectric properties (epsilon' and epsilon `') also the resonant frequency of all the composites was found to be greater than 1 GHz. The imaginary part of permeability mu `' was found to increase with an increase of TiO2.
