A witness seminar on Britain's decision to withdraw from East of Suez was held by the Institute of Contemporary British History at King's College London on 16 November 1990. It was introduced by a short paper by David Greenwood of the Centre for the Study of Defence Economics, University of Aberdeen. Those participating were Professor Lawrence Freedman (Chairman), David Greenwood, Sir Frank Cooper, C.W. Wright, Sir Patrick Nairne, Richard Hastie‐Smith, J.K. Wright, Sir Ewen Broadbent, Peter Hudson, Sir Robert Andrew, Sir George Leitch, Sir Arthur Drew, Lord Thomson of Monifieth, Lord Zuckerman, Lord Mayhew and Field Marshal Lord Carver. In 1915 plans for the celebration of the 700th anniversary of Magna Carta had to be dropped following the outbreak of the First World War. Such celebrations marked a sense of Magna Carta as an event in the history of these islands. The usage of the term Magna Carta in Parliament in the run-up to the First World War, however, shows that its granting was not seen only as a significant historical event to be memorialised. During the period from 1900, opening with war in South Africa and ending in 1914 with war throughout Europe, the Great Charter was mentioned 85 times in Parliament. As a period marked by a lengthy constitutional crisis in 1909-11 and beset with problems in Ireland and the Empire, this seems like a good case study period to choose. This short paper attempts to analyse how and why it was invoked in Parliament in the years and what these various usages tell us about how Magna Carta was understood at the time.

Dealing with ancient manuscript or old printed texts often constitutes a difficult task, especially to philologists and editors, for two main reasons: the precarious state of preservation of the documents and the uncertainty regarding their origin, authenticity and authorship. These problems are aggravated by spurious versions, due to the publication of truncated works, poorly supervised miscellanies and non-authorised editions. Sir Robert Sidney’s literary text constitutes an exception amidst such vicissitudes, once the original corpus is wholly contained in a notebook exhibiting the organisation and unity conceived by the author himself. Today, there is no evidence that any loose poems, either autograph or copied by amanuenses, were in circulation among members of the Elizabethan court society. The notebook was kept in private collections for four centuries, which probably explains why it was so well preserved. In fact, only in 1984 would P.J. Croft’s fine edition bring the youngest Sidney’s Poems into light. In this work, I approach Croft’s perceptive, accurate philological study that eventually rescued from oblivion a remarkable piece both of the Elizabethan lyric poetry and of the English Renaissance, and, at the same time, look into Robert Sidney’s peculiar, careful and original formatting of his own autograph manuscript.

Esta dissertação de Mestrado em Tradução pretende, através da análise da tradução de um texto cultural e temporalmente distante – “Lazy Lawrence” (1796), da autoria de Maria Edgeworth, – reflectir sobre a tradução de literatura infanto-juvenil, partindo de alguns pressupostos teóricos. Despertar um texto, com estas características, abre espaço para formular múltiplas hipóteses e retirar algumas conclusões. Na primeira parte, é apresentada a autora em estudo, Maria Edgeworth, seguindo-se uma incursão pela sua obra. Num segundo momento, tecem-se considerações sobre a literatura infanto-juvenil e a sua tradução. Na terceira parte, são apresentadas algumas perspectivas teóricas sobre a tradução, abrindo espaço à reflexão, a partir de uma análise da tradução do conto “Lazy Lawrence”, apontando e descrevendo algumas das opções tomadas, as quais procuram demonstrar as múltiplas questões que se colocam a um tradutor quando tem de lidar com um texto, temporal e culturalmente, afastado da cultura de chegada.

The presence and importance of the sea as a factor that has helped shape the history of England since at least the Roman invasions of 55-54 BC (less successful, incidentally, than most of Caesar’s other military ventures ...) need no particular urging or demonstration. Nonetheless, a bird’s-eye view would necessarily survey the waves of invasions and settlements that, one after the other, came dashing over the centuries upon England’s shores; not to mention the requested invasion of 1688, Angles and Saxons, Scandinavians, Normans, they all crossed the whale’s path and cast anchor in England’s green and pleasant land. In the course of this retrospective voyage through the oceans of History, one would inevitably stop at the so-called ‘Discoveries’ of the 15th-16th centuries, meet their navigators, sailors and pirates extolled by Richard Hakluyt (1553?-1616), face an anonymous crowd of merchants and witness the huge expansion of trade, largely to the benefit of the ‘discovering’ countries as prescribed by the economic Gospel Adam Smith (1723-90) would later baptize as “mercantilism”.

Este trabalho, que obedece aos requisitos parciais para a obtenção do grau de mestre em História Contemporânea na Universidade Nova de Lisboa, enquadra-se no campo da História Local, incidindo sobre o Porto Grande na Ilha de S. Vicente de Cabo Verde, no período compreendido entre 1850 a 1914. Procurar-se-á, à luz da documentação disponível, analisar a importância do porto para a afirmação da urbe, numa altura em que por força da Revolução Industrial o barco a vapor entrou nos mares do mundo e revolucionou o sistema de transportes. Nessa altura, S. Vicente, que até então mantinhase deserta de gente, é elegida por hidrógrafos ingleses que procuravam um porto seguro onde pudessem instalar as suas companhias carvoeiras para abastecer os seus navios na rota do Atlântico Médio. Foi só por essa altura que o povoamento da ilha tornou-se possível, e a dinâmica do seu crescimento uma realidade, impulsionada pelo porto e sob uma forte influência inglesa. Este ritmo de desenvolvimento começou, porém, a decair nos finais do séc. XIX, altura em que o Porto Grande começa a sofrer uma forte concorrência por parte dos portos de Las Palmas e de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, no Arquipélago das Canárias, agravada ainda mais no inicio do séc. XX, quando, por altura da 1ª Grande Guerra, o Porto Grande do Mindelo também é sulcado por navios das potências beligerantes, envolvidas no conflito.
