This paper aims to develop an implicit meshless approach based on the radial basis function (RBF) for numerical simulation of time fractional diffusion equations. The meshless RBF interpolation is firstly briefed. The discrete equations for two-dimensional time fractional diffusion equation (FDE) are obtained by using the meshless RBF shape functions and the strong-forms of the time FDE. The stability and convergence of this meshless approach are discussed and theoretically proven. Numerical examples with different problem domains and different nodal distributions are studied to validate and investigate accuracy and efficiency of the newly developed meshless approach. It has proven that the present meshless formulation is very effective for modeling and simulation of fractional differential equations.

In this work, a range of nanomaterials have been synthesised based on metal oxyhydroxides MO(OH), where M=Al, Co, Cr, etc. Through a self-assembly hydrothermal route, metal oxyhydroxide nanomaterials with various morphologies were successfully synthesised: one dimensional boehmite (AlO(OH)) nanofibres, zero dimensional indium hydroxide (In(OH)3) nanocubes and chromium oxyhydroxide (CrO(OH)) nanoparticles, as well as two dimensional cobalt hydroxide and oxyhydroxide (Co(OH)2 & CoO(OH)) nanodiscs. In order to control the synthetic nanomaterial morphology and growth, several factors were investigated including cation concentration, temperature, hydrothermal treatment time, and pH. Metal ion doping is a promising technique to modify and control the properties of materials by intentionally introducing impurities or defects into the material. Chromium was successfully applied as a dopant for fabricating doped boehmite nanofibres. The thermal stability of the boehmite nanofibres was enhanced by chromium doping, and the photoluminescence property was introduced to the chromium doped alumina nanofibres. Doping proved to be an efficient method to modify and functionalize nanomaterials. The synthesised nanomaterials were fully characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combined with selected area electron diffraction (SAED), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET specific surface area analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). Hot-stage Raman and infrared emission spectroscopy were applied to study the chemical reactions during dehydration and dehydroxylation. The advantage of these techniques is that the changes in molecular structure can be followed in situ and at the elevated temperatures.

Phospholipid (PL) molecules form the main structure of the membrane that prevents the direct contact of opposing articular cartilage layers. In this paper we conceptualise articular cartilage as a giant reverse micelle (GRM) in which the highly hydrated three-dimensional network of phospholipids is electrically charged and able to resist compressive forces during joint movement, and hence loading. Using this hypothetical base, we describe a hydrophilic-hydrophilic (HL-HL) biopair model of joint lubrication by contacting cartilages, whose mechanism is reliant on lamellar cushioning. To demonstrate the viability of our concept, the electrokinetic properties of the membranous layer on the articular surface were determined by measuring via microelectrophoresis, the adsorption of ions H, OH, Na and Cl on phospholipid membrane of liposomes, leading to the calculation of the effective surface charge density. The surface charge density was found to be -0.08 ± 0.002 cm-2 (mean ± S.D.) for phospholipid membranes, in 0.155 M NaCl solution and physiological pH. This value was approximately five times less than that measured in 0.01 M NaCl. The addition of synovial fluid (SF) to the 0.155 M NaCl solution reduced the surface charge density by 30% which was attributed to the binding of synovial fluid macromolecules to the phospholipid membrane. Our experiments show that particles charge and interact strongly with the polar core of RM. We demonstrate that particles can have strong electrostatic interactions when ions and macromolecules are solubilized by reverse micelle (RM). Since ions are solubilized by reverse micelle, the surface entropy influences the change in the charge density of the phospholipid membrane on cartilage surfaces. Reverse micelles stabilize ions maintaining equilibrium, their surface charges contribute to the stability of particles, while providing additional screening for electrostatic processes. © 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. This special feature section of Journal of Management & Organization (Volume 17/1 - March 2011) sets out to widen understanding of the processes of stability and change in today's organizations, with a particular emphasis on the contribution of institutional approaches to organizational studies. Institutional perspectives on organization theory assume that rational, economic calculations, such as the maximization of profits or the optimization of resource allocation, are not sufficient to understand the behavior of organizations and their strategic choices. Institutionalists acknowledge the great uncertainty associated with the conduct of organizations and suggest that taken-for-granted values, beliefs and meanings within and outside organizations also play an important role in the determination of legitimate action.

A new approach to pattern recognition using invariant parameters based on higher order spectra is presented. In particular, invariant parameters derived from the bispectrum are used to classify one-dimensional shapes. The bispectrum, which is translation invariant, is integrated along straight lines passing through the origin in bifrequency space. The phase of the integrated bispectrum is shown to be scale and amplification invariant, as well. A minimal set of these invariants is selected as the feature vector for pattern classification, and a minimum distance classifier using a statistical distance measure is used to classify test patterns. The classification technique is shown to distinguish two similar, but different bolts given their one-dimensional profiles. Pattern recognition using higher order spectral invariants is fast, suited for parallel implementation, and has high immunity to additive Gaussian noise. Simulation results show very high classification accuracy, even for low signal-to-noise ratios.

Background: Real-world environments comprise surfaces of different textures, densities and gradients, which can threaten postural stability and increase falls risk. However, there has been limited research that has examined how walking on compliant surfaces influences gait and postural stability in older people and PD patients. Methods: PD patients (n = 49) and age-matched controls (n = 32) were assessed using three dimensional motion analysis during self-paced walking on both firm and foam walkways. Falls were recorded prospectively over 12 months using daily falls calendars. Results: Walking on a foam surface influenced the temporospatial characteristics for all groups, but PD fallers adopted very different joint kinematics compared with controls. PD fallers also demonstrated reduced toe clearance and had increased mediolateral head motion(relative to walking velocity) compared with control participants. Conclusions: Postural control deficits in PD fallers may impair their capacity to attenuate surface-related perturbations and control head motion. The risk of falling for PD patients may be increased on less stable surfaces.

Hydrotalcites based upon gallium as a replacement for aluminium in hydrotalcite over a Mg/Al ratio of 2:1 to 4:1 were synthesised. The d(003) spacing varied from 7.83 A ° for the 2:1 hydrotalcite to 8.15 A ° for the 3:1 gallium containing hydrotalcite. A comparison is made with the Mg Al hydrotalcite in which the d(003) spacing for the Mg/Al hydrotalcite varied from 7.62 A ° for the 2:1Mg hydrotalcite to 7.98 A ° for the 4:1 hydrotalcite. The thermal stability of the gallium containing hydrotalcite was determined using thermogravimetric analysis. Four mass loss steps at 77, 263–280,485 and 828 degrees C with mass losses of 10.23, 21.55, 5.20 and 7.58% are attributed to dehydration, dehydroxylation and decarbonation. The thermal stability of the galliumcontaining hydrotalcite is slightly less than the aluminium hydrotalcite.
