Este proyecto se enmarca dentro de la Computación Simbólica y de los fundamentos matemáticos del Diseño Geométrico Asistido por ordenador (CAGD). Se abordara uno de los problemas principales en el ámbito del CAGD y que es la manipulación de las Curvas Concoide. La importancia del avance en la manipulación de las curvas concoide radica en el papel fundamental que desempeñan en múltiples aplicaciones en la actualidad dentro de campos de diversa índole tales como la medicina, la óptica, el electromagnetismo, la construcción, etc. El objetivo principal de este proyecto es el diseño e implementación de algoritmos para el estudio, cálculo y manipulación de curvas concoides, utilizando técnicas propias del Calculo Simbólico. Esta implementación se ha programado utilizando el sistema de computación simbólica Maple. El proyecto consiste en dos partes bien diferenciadas, una parte teórica y otra más practica. La primera incluye la descripción geométrica y definición formal de curvas concoide, así como las ideas y propiedades básicas. De forma más precisa, se presenta un estudio matemático sobre el análisis de racionalidad de estas curvas, explicando los algoritmos que serán implementados en las segunda parte, y que constituye el objetivo principal de este proyecto. Para cerrar esta parte, se presenta una pequeña introducción al sistema y a la programación en Maple. Por otro lado, la segunda parte de este proyecto es totalmente original, y en ella el autor desarrolla las implementaciones en Maple de los algoritmos presentados en la parte anterior, así como la creación de un paquete Maple que las recoge. Por último, se crean las paginas de ayudas en el sistema Maple para la correcta utilización del paquete matemático anteriormente mencionado. Una vez terminada la parte de implementación, se aplican los algoritmos implementados a una colección de curvas clásicas conocidas, recogiendo los datos y resultados obtenidos en un atlas de curvas. Finalmente, se presenta una recopilación de las aplicaciones más destacadas en las que las concoides desempeñan un papel importante así como una breve reseña sobre las concoides de superficies, objeto de varios estudios en la actualidad y a los que se considera que el presente proyecto les puede resultar de gran utilidad. Abstract This project is set up in the framework of Symbolic Computation as well as in the implementation of algebraic-geometric problems that arise from Computer Aided Geometric Design (C.A.G.D.) applications. We address problems related to conchoid curves. The importance of these curves is the fundamental role that they play in current applications as medicine, optics, electromagnetism, construction, etc. The main goal of this project is to design and implement some algorithms to solve problems in studying, calculating and generating conchoid curves with symbolic computation techniques. For this purpose, we program our implementations in the symbolic system “Maple". The project consists of two differentiated parts, one more theoretical part and another part more practical. The first one includes the description of conchoid curves as well as the basic ideas about the concept and its basic properties. More precisely, we introduce in this part the mathematical analysis of the rationality of the conchoids, and we present the algorithms that will be implemented. Furthermore, the reader will be brie y introduced in Maple programming. On the other hand, the second part of this project is totally original. In this more practical part, the author presents the implemented algorithms and a Maple package that includes them, as well as their help pages. These implemented procedures will be check and illustrated with some classical and well known curves, collecting the main properties of the conchoid curves obtained in a brief atlas. Finally, a compilation of the most important applications where conchoids play a fundamental role, and a brief introduction to the conchoids of surfaces, subject of several studies today and where this project could be very useful, are presented.

El presente Proyecto de Fin de Carrera supone el propósito conjunto de los alumnos Álvaro Morillas y Fernando Sáez, y del profesor Vladimir Ulin, de desarrollar una unidad didáctica sobre el programa de simulación para ingeniería Virtual.Lab. La versión sobre la que se ha trabajado para realizar este texto es la 11, publicada en agosto de 2012. Virtual.Lab, del fabricante belga LMS International, es una plataforma software de ingeniería asistida por ordenador, que agrupa en una misma aplicación varias herramientas complementarias en el diseño de un producto, desde su definición geométrica a los análisis de durabilidad, ruido u optimización. No obstante, de entre todas las posibles simulaciones que nos permite el programa, en este proyecto sólo se tratan las que están relacionadas con la acústica. Cabe resaltar que gran parte de los conceptos manejados en Virtual.Lab son compatibles con el programa CATIA V5, ya que ambos programas vienen instalados y funcionan conjuntamente. Por eso, el lector de este proyecto podrá transportar sus conocimientos al que es uno de los programas estándar en las industrias aeronáutica, naval y automovilística, entre otras. Antes de este proyecto, otros alumnos de la escuela también realizaron proyectos de fin de carrera en el campo de la simulación computarizada en acústica. Una característica común a estos trabajos es que era necesario hacer uso de distintos programas para cada una de las etapas de simulación (como por ejemplo, ANSYS para el modelado y estudio de la vibración y SYSNOISE para las simulaciones acústicas, además de otros programas auxiliares para las traducciones de formato). Con Virtual.Lab desaparece esta necesidad y el tiempo empleado se reduce. Debido a que las soluciones por ordenador están ganando cada vez más importancia en la industria actual, los responsables de este proyecto consideran la necesidad de formación de profesionales en esta rama. Para responder a la demanda empresarial de trabajadores cualificados, se espera que en los próximos años los planes de estudio contengan más cursos en esta materia. Por tanto la intención de los autores es que este material sea de utilidad para el aprendizaje y docencia de estas asignaturas en cursos sucesivos. Por todo esto, se justifica la relevancia de este PFC como manual para introducir a los alumnos interesados en iniciarse en un sistema actual, de uso extendido en otras universidades tecnológicas europeas, y con buenas perspectivas de futuro. En este proyecto se incluyen varios ejemplos ejecutables desde el programa, así como vídeos explicativos que ayudan a mostrar gráficamente los procesos de simulación. Estos archivos se pueden encontrar en el CD adjunto. Abstract This final thesis is a joint project made by the students Álvaro Morillas and Fernando Sáez, and the professor Vladimir Ulin. The nature of the joint regards the writing of a didactic unit on Virtual.Lab, the simulation software. The software version used in this text is the number 11, released in August 2012. Virtual.Lab, from the Belgian developer LMS International, is a computer-aided engineering software which is used for several related tasks in this field: product design, durability simulation, optimization, etc. However, this project is focused on the acoustical capabilities. It is worthy to highlight that most procedures explained in this text can be used in the software CATIA V5 as well. Both tools come installed together and may be used at the same time. Therefore, the reader of this project will be able to use the acquired knowledge in one of the most relevant softwares for the aerospace, marine and automotive engineering. Previously to the development of this project, this School has conducted projects on this field. These projects regarded the use of ANSYS for modeling and meshing stages as well as the use of SYSNOISE for the final acoustic analysis. Since both systems use different file formats, a third-party translation software was required. This thesis fulfill this pending necessity with Virtual.Lab; the translation software procedure is not necessary anymore and simulations can be done in a more flexible, fast way. Since companies have an increasing usage of numerical methods in the development of their products and services, the authors think that it is important to develop the appropriate method to instruct new professionals in the field. Thus, the aim of this project is to help teachers and students in their process of learning the use of this leading software in acoustical simulations. For all the reasons mentioned above, we consider that this project is relevant for the School and the educational community. Aiming to achieve this objective the author offers example files and video demonstrations with guidance in the CD that accompanies this material. This facilitates the comprehension of the practical tasks and guides the prospect users of the software.

The conchoid of a surface F with respect to given xed point O is roughly speaking the surface obtained by increasing the radius function with respect to O by a constant. This paper studies conchoid surfaces of spheres and shows that these surfaces admit rational parameterizations. Explicit parameterizations of these surfaces are constructed using the relations to pencils of quadrics in R3 and R4. Moreover we point to remarkable geometric properties of these surfaces and their construction.

The graphical user interface (GUI) are all graphic elements that help to communicate with a system. The design of a GUI allow to land the central idea of a draft information technology. Today technology has become one of the largest and most useful tools to automate and facilitate processes for that reason fit into any kind of productive sectors, for example, in the health sector. The CAD systems (Systems Computer Aided Diagnosis) are the type of technology used in the health sector, in order to automate online modular learning environment with a fast placed in service. In the present paper the use of a Learning Management Systems (LMS) as continuous education tool is proposed.

This paper introduces a new optimization model for the simultaneous synthesis of heat and work exchange networks. The work integration is performed in the work exchange network (WEN), while the heat integration is carried out in the heat exchanger network (HEN). In the WEN synthesis, streams at high-pressure (HP) and low-pressure (LP) are subjected to pressure manipulation stages, via turbines and compressors running on common shafts and stand-alone equipment. The model allows the use of several units of single-shaft-turbine-compressor (SSTC), as well as helper motors and generators to respond to any shortage and/or excess of energy, respectively, in the SSTC axes. The heat integration of the streams occurs in the HEN between each WEN stage. Thus, as the inlet and outlet streams temperatures in the HEN are dependent of the WEN design, they must be considered as optimization variables. The proposed multi-stage superstructure is formulated in mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), in order to minimize the total annualized cost composed by capital and operational expenses. A case study is conducted to verify the accuracy of the proposed approach. The results indicate that the heat integration between the WEN stages is essential to enhance the work integration, and to reduce the total cost of process due the need of a smaller amount of hot and cold utilities.

This paper introduces a new mathematical model for the simultaneous synthesis of heat exchanger networks (HENs), wherein the handling pressure of process streams is used to enhance the heat integration. The proposed approach combines generalized disjunctive programming (GDP) and mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) formulation, in order to minimize the total annualized cost composed by operational and capital expenses. A multi-stage superstructure is developed for the HEN synthesis, assuming constant heat capacity flow rates and isothermal mixing, and allowing for streams splits. In this model, the pressure and temperature of streams must be treated as optimization variables, increasing further the complexity and difficulty to solve the problem. In addition, the model allows for coupling of compressors and turbines to save energy. A case study is performed to verify the accuracy of the proposed model. In this example, the optimal integration between the heat and work decreases the need for thermal utilities in the HEN design. As a result, the total annualized cost is also reduced due to the decrease in the operational expenses related to the heating and cooling of the streams.

Superstructure approaches are the solution to the difficult problem which involves the rigorous economic design of a distillation column. These methods require complex initialization procedures and they are hard to solve. For this reason, these methods have not been extensively used. In this work, we present a methodology for the rigorous optimization of chemical processes implemented on a commercial simulator using surrogate models based on a kriging interpolation. Several examples were studied, but in this paper, we perform the optimization of a superstructure for a non-sharp separation to show the efficiency and effectiveness of the method. Noteworthy that it is possible to get surrogate models accurate enough with up to seven degrees of freedom.

The work describes the programme of activities relating to a mechanical study of the Conform extrusion process. The main objective was to provide a basic understanding of the mechanics of the Conform process with particular emphasis placed on modelling using experimental and theoretical considerations. The experimental equipment used includes a state of the art computer-aided data-logging system and high temperature loadcells (up to 260oC) manufactured from tungsten carbide. Full details of the experimental equipment is presented in sections 3 and 4. A theoretical model is given in Section 5. The model presented is based on the upper bound theorem using a variation of the existing extrusion theories combined with temperature changes in the feed metal across the deformation zone. In addition, constitutive equations used in the model have been generated from existing experimental data. Theoretical and experimental data are presented in tabular form in Section 6. The discussion of results includes a comprehensive graphical presentation of the experimental and theoretical data. The main findings are: (i) the establishment of stress/strain relationships and an energy balance in order to study the factors affecting redundant work, and hence a model suitable for design purposes; (ii) optimisation of the process, by determination of the extrusion pressure for the range of reduction and changes in the extrusion chamber geometry at lower wheel speeds; and (iii) an understanding of the control of the peak temperature reach during extrusion.

The main objective of the work presented in this thesis is to investigate the two sides of the flute, the face and the heel of a twist drill. The flute face was designed to yield straight diametral lips which could be extended to eliminate the chisel edge, and consequently a single cutting edge will be obtained. Since drill rigidity and space for chip conveyance have to be a compromise a theoretical expression is deduced which enables optimum chip disposal capacity to be described in terms of drill parameters. This expression is used to describe the flute heel side. Another main objective is to study the effect on drill performance of changing the conventional drill flute. Drills were manufactured according to the new flute design. Tests were run in order to compare the performance of a conventional flute drill and non conventional design put forward. The results showed that 50% reduction in thrust force and approximately 18% reduction in torque were attained for the new design. The flank wear was measured at the outer corner and found to be less for the new design drill than for the conventional one in the majority of cases. Hole quality, roundness, size and roughness were also considered as a further aspect of drill performance. Improvement in hole quality is shown to arise under certain cutting conditions. Accordingly it might be possible to use a hole which is produced in one pass of the new drill which previously would have required a drilled and reamed hole. A subsidiary objective is to design the form milling cutter that should be employed for milling the foregoing special flute from drill blank allowing for the interference effect. A mathematical analysis in conjunction with computing technique and computers is used. To control the grinding parameter, a prototype drill grinder was designed and built upon the framework of an existing cincinnati cutter grinder. The design and build of the new grinder is based on a computer aided drill point geometry analysis. In addition to the conical grinding concept, the new grinder is also used to produce spherical point utilizing a computer aided drill point geometry analysis.

The thesis presents a theoretical and practical study of the dynamic behaviour of electromagnetic relays. After discussing the problem of solving the dynamicc equations analytically and presenting a historical survey of the earlier works in the relay and its dynamics, the simulation of a relay on the analogue computer is discussed. It is shown that the simulation may be used to obtain specific solutions to the dynamic equations. The computer analysis provides the dynamic characteristics for design purposes and may be used in the study of bouncing, rebound oscillations and stability of the armature motion. An approximate analytical solution to the two dynamic equations is given based on the assumption that the dynamic variation of the pull with the position of the armature is linear. The assumption is supported by the Computer-aided analysis and experimental results. The solution is intended to provide a basis for a rational design. A rigorous method of analysing the dynamic performance by using Ahlberg's theory is also presented. This method may be justified to be the extension of Ahlberg's theory by taking the mass and frictional damping forces into account. While calculating the armature motion mathematically, Ahlberg considers the equilibrium of two kinds of forces, namely pull and load, and disregards the mass and friction forces, whereas the present method deals with the equilibrium of all four kinds of forces. It is shown how this can be utilised to calculate the dynamic characteristics for a specific design. The utility of this method also extends to the study of stability, contact bounce and armature rebound. The magnetic circuit and other related topics which are essential to the study of relay dynamics are discussed and some necessary experimental results are given.

Introduction-The design of the UK MPharm curriculum is driven by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) accreditation process and the EU directive (85/432/EEC).[1] Although the RPSGB is informed about teaching activity in UK Schools of Pharmacy (SOPs), there is no database which aggregates information to provide the whole picture of pharmacy education within the UK. The aim of the teaching, learning and assessment study [2] was to document and map current programmes in the 16 established SOPs. Recent developments in programme delivery have resulted in a focus on deep learning (for example, through problem based learning approaches) and on being more student centred and less didactic through lectures. The specific objectives of this part of the study were (a) to quantify the content and modes of delivery of material as described in course documentation and (b) having categorised the range of teaching methods, ask students to rate how important they perceived each one for their own learning (using a three point Likert scale: very important, fairly important or not important). Material and methods-The study design compared three datasets: (1) quantitative course document review, (2) qualitative staff interview and (3) quantitative student self completion survey. All 16 SOPs provided a set of their undergraduate course documentation for the year 2003/4. The documentation variables were entered into Excel tables. A self-completion questionnaire was administered to all year four undergraduates, using a pragmatic mixture of methods, (n=1847) in 15 SOPs within Great Britain. The survey data were analysed (n=741) using SPSS, excluding non-UK students who may have undertaken part of their studies within a non-UK university. Results and discussion-Interviews showed that individual teachers and course module leaders determine the choice of teaching methods used. Content review of the documentary evidence showed that 51% of the taught element of the course was delivered using lectures, 31% using practicals (includes computer aided learning) and 18% small group or interactive teaching. There was high uniformity across the schools for the first three years; variation in the final year was due to the project. The average number of hours per year across 15 schools (data for one school were not available) was: year 1: 408 hours; year 2: 401 hours; year 3: 387 hours; year 4: 401 hours. The survey showed that students perceived lectures to be the most important method of teaching after dispensing or clinical practicals. Taking the very important rating only: 94% (n=694) dispensing or clinical practicals; 75% (n=558) lectures; 52% (n=386) workshops, 50% (n=369) tutorials, 43% (n=318) directed study. Scientific laboratory practices were rated very important by only 31% (n=227). The study shows that teaching of pharmacy to undergraduates in the UK is still essentially didactic through a high proportion of formal lectures and with high levels of staff-student contact. Schools consider lectures still to be the most cost effective means of delivering the core syllabus to large cohorts of students. However, this does limit the scope for any optionality within teaching, the scope for small group work is reduced as is the opportunity to develop multi-professional learning or practice placements. Although novel teaching and learning techniques such as e-learning have expanded considerably over the past decade, schools of pharmacy have concentrated on lectures as the best way of coping with the huge expansion in student numbers. Methodology of computer-aided investigation and provision of safety for complex constructions and a prototype of the intelligent applied system, which implements it, are considered. The methodology is determined by the model of the object under scrutiny, by the structure and functions of investigation of safety as well as by a set of research methods. The methods are based on the technologies of object-oriented databases, expert systems and on the mathematical modeling. The intelligent system’s prototype represents component software, which provides for support of decision making in the process of safety investigations and investigation of the cause of failure. Support of decision making is executed by analogy, by determined search for the precedents (cases) with respect to predicted (on the stage of design) and observed (on the stage of exploitation) parameters of the damage, destruction and malfunction of a complex hazardous construction.
