Further experiments on susceptibility of Biomphalaria amazonica to Schistosoma mansoni

A sample of Biomphalaria amazonica from Porto Velho, Rondônia state, was exposed to miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni (SJ2 strain) from São José dos Campos, São Paulo state (five miracidia per snail). Water freshly taken from the snails' breeding place was used to make sure that its quality was compatible with hatching of miracidia and their penetration into the snails. The resulting infection rate was 3.5%, as against 45% in B. tenagophila controls. In comparison with the controls, B. amazonica, besides a lower infection rate, showed a longer prepatent period and a lower cercarial production. These characteristics seem to indicate that it is a poor host of S. mansoni, like B. straminea, but it should be considered that, this notwithstanding, the latter is admittedly a good vector of the parasite in hyperendemic areas of northeastern Brazil. These results point to the possibility of introduction of schistosomiasis mansoni into the western Amazonian region, where B. amazonica is widespread.

Crise fiscal em municípios, indicadores e instrumentos

O objetivo deste artigo é desenvolver um conjunto de indicadores denominado Sistema Preventivo (Earlv Warning System) que permita diagnosticar a crise antes de sua manifestação aguda. atuando sobre o processo antecipadamente. Com base nesses indicadores é possível definir estratégias que permitam agir de modo a deter o processo e prevenir o esgotamento fiscal. Em outras palavras, por tratar-se a crise fiscal de um processo estrutural, é possível submeter o município a um tratamento preventivo. Pretende-se também discutir os instrumentos que podem ser utilizados pelos municípios no caso de estarem enfrentando uma crise fiscal. A segunda seção do artigo descreve as variáveis que causam e condicionam o processo e a manifestação aguda de crise fiscal. A terceira seção desenvolve os indicadores analíticos por meio dos quais será possível detectar de modo antecipado um processo de emergência fiscal, ou seja, o sistema preventivo. Na mesma seção, aplica-se o sistema preventivo descrito A cidade paulista de São José dos Campos, para o período de 1980 a 1990, e avalia-se a situação fiscal da cidade. A quarta seção descreve estratégias e políticas que permitirão agir sobre o processo de crise a fim de revertê-lo e evitar sua evolução.

Transformando necessidades em oportunidades : políticas públicas de apoio ao empreendedorismo para classes sociais de baixa renda

Este trabalho objetiva caracterizar e analisar, de forma exploratório-descritiva e apoiando-se em três estudos de caso, os programas de apoio ao empreendedorismo para classes sociais de baixa renda, nas seguintes comunidades do Estado de São Paulo: São José dos Campos, Tarumã e a Subprefeitura do Itaim Paulista - São Paulo, gerando subsídios que possam corroborar e apontar falhas nos programas existentes, alicerçando as sugestões para melhoria dos mesmos. São enfocados os seguintes aspectos: efetividade dos programas e políticas atuais, planejamento integrado do município e inserção social, principais empecilhos e facilitadores dos programas analisados, e sugestões e caminhos a serem seguidos. O estudo dos casos selecionados e a revisão de literatura efetuada formam a base para uma série de reflexões e sugestões, visando aumentar a eficácia e eficiência dos programas aqui analisados, inseridos no planejamento integrado e sustentável dos municípios. Os resultados mostram que, apesar de haver clara consciência dos gestores quanto às falhas e necessidades dos programas existentes, e um bom entendimento das expectativas e potencialidades do público-alvo, os programas ainda falham em operacionalizar as soluções para correção de falhas e otimização e integração das ações.

Nas redes, menções à dengue se concentram em locais com maior número de casos

Durante a última semana um dos assuntos mais comentados nas redes sociais foi a grande escala de relatos sobre dengue em vários pontos do país. De acordo com o levantamento de dados de rede da FGV-DAPP, as cidades que possuem o maior risco de aumento do caso da dengue, mapeadas pelo Ministério da Saúde, tendem também a possuir o maior número de menções ao tema nas redes sociais. A Folha de S.Paulo produziu um mapa sobre a epidemia de dengue no Brasil, em que é possível visualizar as cidades com maior incidência da doença. São Paulo, Rio e Sorocaba lideraram o ranking do volume de publicações sobre dengue. A análise também mostra grande participação em outras cidades, como Goiânia - capital de um dos Estados mais afetados -, Limeira e São José dos Campos - ambas cidades do interior paulista.

Para imersão no tema o grupo realizou Experiências de Campo passando por Paulínia, São José dos Campos, Porto Alegre, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Curvelo, Uberaba e Lagoa da Prata. Visitaram projetos e iniciativas que buscam endereçar os desafios da PNRS e conversaram com os diferentes atores que trabalham neste universo: poder público, empresas, sociedade civil, catadores, especialistas e academia na tentativa de configurar uma imagem do cenário dos resíduos sólidos no país.

Water flow in high-speed handpieces

Objectives: This study measured the water flow commonly used in high-speed handpieces to evaluate the water flow's influence on temperature generation. Different flow speeds were evaluated between turbines that had different numbers of cooling apertures. Method and materials: Two water samples were collected from each high-speed handpiece at private practices and at the School of Dentistry at São José dos Campos. The first sample was collected at the customary flow and the second was collected with the terminal opened for maximum flow. The two samples were collected into weighed glass receptacles after 15 seconds of turbine operation. The glass receptacles were reweighed and the difference between weights was recorded to calculate the water flow in mL/min and for further statistical analysis. Results: The average water flow for 137 samples was 29.48 mL/min. The flow speeds obtained were 42.38 mL/min for turbines with one coolant aperture; 34.31 mL/min for turbines with two coolant apertures; and 30.44 mL/min for turbines with three coolant apertures. There were statistical differences between turbines with one and three coolant apertures (Tukey-Kramer multiple comparisons test with P < .05). Conclusion: Turbine handpieces with one cooling aperture distributed more water for the burs than high-speed handpieces with more than one aperture.

Immunohistochemistry as a fundamental tool for the differential diagnosis of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a subtype of salivary gland carcinoma with a marked predilection for the minor salivary glands. The diagnosis of this lesion can be a challenge in incisional biopsies because of its similarity to other salivary neoplasms and the difficulty of analyzing its infiltrative nature and neurotropism. Diagnosis can be facilitated, however, by immunohistochemistry, a technique that has become a fundamental tool to the pathologist. The purpose of this study was analyze the immunohistochemical aspects of 4 cases that were examined in the São José dos Campos School of Dentistry. The patients included 4 women, ages 32 to 57 years (mean, 50 years), who reported an intraoral painless lesion, ranging in size from 1 to 3 cm (mean, 1.75 cm) with a variable evolution period. Histologically, the lesions showed similar aspects, characterized by polymorphous growth pattern, including solid, cribriform, trabecular, papillary, and single-file arrays. The tumors showed positivity to cytokeratins (Cks) 7 and 8 and vimentin, variable expression for Ck 14, and a negative reaction to Cks 13 and 19 and muscle-specific actin. PLGA is a tumor of the salivary gland that must be distinguished from other neoplasms for therapeutic and prognostic considerations, and the panel of antibodies employed in this study was effective for its diagnosis.

Dental age in patients with Down syndrome

The aim of this research was to evaluate dental age in 102 patients with Down Syndrome, using panoramic radiographs. A software program developed by the Discipline of Radiology, School of Dentistry of São José dos Campos, São Paulo State University (UNESP), was used. A table of mineralization chronology of permanent teeth among Brazilians conceived by Nicodemo, Moraes and Medici Filho was used within the software. Statistical analysis of the results showed that 70.91% of the males land 61.21% of the females presented advanced dental age. Only 32.09% of the males and 39.79% of the females presented delayed dental age. Regarding the differences between the dental and chronological ages, two thirds of the males and females presented dental age with differences of up to 12 months, which means that they can be considered to be within normal standards, whereas only 18.87% of the males and 10.21% of the females presented dental age outside normal standards, with differences of over 24 months. In conclusion, the majority of the patients with Down Syndrome were considered to be within the normal standards of mineralization chronology.

Topical Calendula officinalis L. successfully treated exfoliative cheilitis: A case report

Authors describe a case of recurrent exfoliative cheilitis that responded to treatment with a standardized topical preparation of Calendula officinalis L. An eighteen-year-old man was referred to UNESP - São Paulo State University, Department of Biosciences and Oral Diagnosis, São José dos Campos Dental School to investigate a chronic dry scaling lesion on his lips. The patient's main chief was aesthetic compromising. Corticoid therapy was suspended and Calendula officinalis ointment 10% for ad libitum use has been prescribed. The results presented allow the authors to consider Calendula officinalis L. as a potential therapy in cases of cheilitis exfoliative. © 2009 Roveroni-Favaretto et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Radiographic study of ossification of the pterygospinous and pterygoalar ligaments by the Hirtz axial technique.

The correct radiographic identification of ossification of the pterygospinous and pterygoalar ligaments plays an important role in surgical procedures for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Most of these procedures are performed through the foramen ovale, a site where these ligaments can be found to be partially or completely ossified. We studied the radiographic features of these ossified ligaments and their location in relation to the foramen ovale by the Hirtz axial technique. For this purpose, 93 dry skulls from the Discipline of Anatomy, São José dos Campos Dental School, UNESP, which presented partial or complete ossification of these ligaments, were radiographed. The pterygospinous ligament was detected on 27.97% of radiographs and was partially ossified in 19.36% of cases and completely ossified in 8.61%. The pterygoalar ligament was present in 62.35% of radiographs, being partially ossified in 49.44% and completely ossified in 12.91%. The pterygospinous ligaments was found to be partially and completely ossified on the same radiograph in 3.23% of cases, whereas the pterygoalar ligament appeared partially and completely ossified on the same radiograph in 6.45%. Furthermore, the pterygospinous ligament was thinner than the pterygoalar ligament and located more medially in relation to the foramen ovale. The pterygoalar ligament formed a large bone bar lateral to the foramen ovale, often obliterating the lumen of the latter. The Hirtz axial technique is an excellent tool for the observation of complete or partial ossification of the pterygospinous and pterygoalar ligaments in surgical procedures for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia performed through the foramen ovale.

Delimitação do Embasamento da Bacia de Taubat

The aim of this study is to define the basement map of the Taubaté Basin applying geostatistics to seismic, gravimetric and deep wells data. The study consisted of the interpretation of eleven seismic sections obtained in the central and northeastern portions of the basin. The altitude of the basement and the distribution of faults was determined based on these sections. New information was obtained from 79 wells located mainly in the regions of São José dos Campos and Jacareí. The method of kriging with an external drift was applied, using seismic and well data as the main variables and the gravimetric map as the secondary variable. The basement contour map obtained has a strong correlation with the main faults. It was possible to obtain a better resolution in the region of São José dos Campos and in the northeast area, where the vast majority of wells are located.

Granular cell tumor presenting as a tongue nodule: Two case reports

Introduction. Granular cell tumor is an uncommon neoplasm that can occur in any part of the body, including the orofacial region. The tumor is usually benign, but there are reports of cases in which the tumor shows a locally aggressive behavior, malignancy, and distant metastases. The most widely accepted hypothesis is that granular cell tumor arises from the altered metabolism of Schwann cells. The tumor is typically asymptomatic and appears as a nodule that does not exceed 3 cm. Case presentation. In case 1, a 26-year-old Caucasian man was seen at the Oral Medicine out-patient clinic of the São José dos Campos Dental School, Universidade Estadual Paulista, with a 'small blister on the tongue', which he had noted approximately three years ago. The nodule was located on the dorsum of the tongue, measured about 1.5 cm in diameter, and was not tender to palpation. Treatment consisted of an excisional biopsy performed on the basis of the diagnostic hypothesis of granular cell tumor, which was confirmed by microscopic analysis. In case 2, a 31-year-old Caucasian woman attended the out-patient clinic of the São José dos Campos Dental School, Universidade Estadual Paulista, with a five-year history of a 'painful lump on the tongue'. Intra-oral examination revealed the presence of a nodular lesion measuring approximately 0.8 cm in diameter, which was located deep in the submucosa of the right lateral margin of the tongue. Treatment consisted of an excisional biopsy performed on the basis of the differential diagnosis of neurofibroma and granular cell tumor. Microscopic analysis defined the final diagnosis of granular cell tumor. Conclusions: Granular cell tumor is an uncommon tumor that must be carefully diagnosed and treated correctly. © 2012 Sena Costa et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Speech therapy intervention before dental management in patients with special needs: A case report

Fragile X syndrome is a cytogenetic abnormality related to chromosomal X. This syndrome is frequently associated to intellectual disability, psychological problems, as well as heart, skeletal and join alterations. Intraoral anomalies include malloclusion, ogival palate, cleft palate, presence of mesiodens, dental hypomineralization and abrasion of the occlusal surfaces and incisai edges. The study of characteristics of this syndrome is important for the dentist in order to guide dental treatment and prevention. The aim of this study is to present a myofunctional therapy protocol, evaluated by surface electromyography. A case of a 21 year-old young man who attended the Training Program in Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities, School of Dentistry of São José dos Campos/UNESP is reported. He underwent myofunctional therapy before dental treatment and the masticatory muscles were evaluated by surface electromyography. The exercises of myofunctional therapy consisted of active and passive simple movements of opening and closing the mouth, tongue protrusion and retrusion, digital manipulation and also by using an electric massager on intraoral and perioral region of the masseter, buccinator and orbicularis oris. Action potentials of the masticatory muscles decreased in almost all the muscles and values for the bite force and mandibular opening capacity increased. This study showed that brief and immediate myofunctional therapy optimized clinical practice with positive repercussion on dental care.
