Six ruthenium(II) complexes have been prepared using the tridentate ligands 2,6-bis(benzimidazolyl) pyridine and bis(2-benzimidazolyl methyl) amine and having 2,2'-bipyridine, 2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine, PPh3, MeCN and chloride as coligands. The crystal structures of three of the complexes trans-[Ru(bbpH(2))(PPh3)(2)(CH3CN)I(ClO4)(2) center dot 2H(2)O (2), [Ru(bbpH(2))(bpy)Cl]ClO4 (3) and [Ru(bbpH(2))(terpy)](ClO4)(2) (4) are also reported. The complexes show visible region absorption at 402-517 nm, indicating that it is possible to tune the visible region absorption by varying the ancillary ligand. Luminescence behavior of the complexes has been studied both at RT and at liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT). Luminescence of the complexes is found to be insensitive to the presence of dioxygen. Two of the complexes [Ru(bbpH(2))(bpy)Cl]ClO4 (3) and [Ru(bbpH(2))(terpy]ClO4)(2) (4) show RT emission in the NIR region, having lifetime, quantum yield and radiative constant values suitable for their application as NIR emitter in the solid state devices. The DFT calculations on these two complexes indicate that the metal t(2g) electrons are appreciably delocalized over the ligand backbone. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three new linear trinuclear nickel(II) complexes, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OAc)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (1) (OAc = acetate, CH3COO-), [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OBz)(2)] (2) (OBz=benzoate, PhCOO-) and [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OCn)(2)(CH3CN)(2)] (4) (OCn = cinnamate, PhCH=CHCOO-), H(2)salpen = tetradentate ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The choice of solvent for growing single crystal was made by inspecting the morphology of the initially obtained solids with the help of SEM study. The magnetic properties of a closely related complex, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OPh)(2)(EtOH)] (3) (OPh = phenyl acetate, PhCH2COO-) whose structure and solution properties have been reported recently, has also been studied here. The structural analyses reveal that both phenoxo and carboxylate bridging are present in all the complexes and the three Ni(II) atoms remain in linear disposition. Although the Schiff base ligand and the syn-syn bridging bidentate mode of the carboxylate group remain the same in complexes 1-4, the change of alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylates brings about systematic variations between six- and five-coordination in the geometry of the terminal Ni(II) centres of the trinuclear units. The steric demand as well as hydrophobic nature of the alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylate is found to play a crucial role in the tuning of the geometry. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that complexes 1-4 are antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -3.2(1), -4.6(1). -3.2(1) and -2.8(1) cm(-1) in 1-4, respectively). Calculations of the zero-field splitting parameter indicate that the values of D for complexes 1-4 are in the high range (D = +9.1(2), +14.2(2), +9.8(2) and +8.6(1) cm(-1) for 1-4, respectively). The highest D value of +14.2(2) and +9.8(2) cm(-1) for complexes 2 and 3, respectively, are consistent with the pentacoordinated geometry of the two terminal nickel(II) ions in 2 and one terminal nickel(II) ion in 3. Six Ru(II) complexes of formula [Ru(L)(2)(PPh3)(2)] have been prepared where LH = 4-(aryl)thiosemicarbazones of thiophen-2-carbaldehyde. X-ray crystal structures of five of the complexes are reported. In all the complexes ruthenium is six coordinate with a distorted octahedral cis-P-2, cis-N-2, trans-S-2 donor environment, and each of the two thiosemicarbazone ligands are coordinated in a bidentate fashion forming a four membered chelate ring. The complexes undergo a one-electron oxidation at similar to 0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The EPR spectrum of the electrochemically oxidized solution at 100 K shows a rhombic signal, with transitions at g(1) = 2.27, g(2) = 2.00 and g(3) = 1.80. DFT calculations on one of the complexes suggest that there is 35% ruthenium and 17% sulfur orbital contribution to the HOMO. These results suggest that the assignment of metal atom oxidation states in these compounds is not unambiguous. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

New Pd(II), Pt(II) and Re(V) complexes of 3-aminosalicylic acid (H(2)salNH(2)) and 3-hydroxyantranilic acid (HantOH) have been prepared, cis-[Pt (HsalNH)(PPh3)(2)] center dot 0.25C(2)H(5)OH (1), trans-[PdCl(salNH(2))(PPh3)(2)](2), trans-[ReOI2(HsalNH(2))(PPh3)] center dot (CH3)(2)CO (3), cis-[Pt(HantO)(PPh3)(2)] (4), trans-[PdCl(antOH)(PPh3)(2)] center dot 4H(2)O (5), [PdCl(antOH)(bipy)] center dot C2H5OH (6), [PdCl2(HantOH)(2)] (7) and trans-[ReOI(HantO)(PPh3)(2)] center dot (CH3)(2)CO (8). The crystal structure of complex I was determined showing chelation of HsalNH(2-) through the adjacent nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the amino and phenolate groups. Infrared and H-1 NMR spectroscopic data for the complexes are presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two tridentate N,N,O donor Schiff bases, HL1 (4-(2-ethylamino-ethylimino)-pentan-2-one) and HL2 (3-(2-amino-propylimino)-1-phenyl-butan-1-one) on reaction with Cu-II acetate in presence of triethyl amine yielded two basal-apical, mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridging dimeric copper(II) complexes, [Cu2L21(OAc)(2)] (1), [Cu2L22(OAc)(2)] (2). Whereas two other similar tridentate ligands HL3 (4-(2-amino-propylimino)-pentane-2-one) and HL3 (3-(2-amino-ethylimino)-1-phenyl-butan-1-one) under the same conditions produced a mixture of the corresponding dinners and a one-dimensional alternating chain of the dimer and copper acetate moiety, [Cu4L23(OAc)(6)](n) (3) and [Cu4L24(OAc)(6)](n) (4), formed by a very rare mu(3) bridging mode of the acetate ion. All four complexes (1-4) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = -JS(1)S(2) has been used to interpret the magnetic data. Magnetic measurements of 1 and 2 in the temperature range 2-300 K reveal a very weak antiferromagnetic coupling for both complexes U = -0.56 and -1.19 cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively). The blue coloured complex [Cu(HL)(H2O)(ClO4)]ClO.H2O.MeOH (1.H2O.MeOH) has been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-methylpyridyl)(3,5-dimethyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)amine (HL) in methanol. The same reaction, when carried out in the presence of sodium azide, afforded a dark-blue complex of formula [Cu-2(HL)(2)(mu-1,1-N-3)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2). The crystal and molecular structures of the complexes have been solved. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data in the range of 2-300 K for 2 reveal the existence of an antiferromagnetic interaction through an end-on azido linker. Temperature-dependent susceptibility studies for 2 were fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression, which led to the parameters J = -3.2 cm(-1), g = 2.12 and R = 2.14 x 10(-4). Two mononuclear and one dinuclear copper(II) complexes, containing neutral tetradentate NSSN type ligands, of formulation [Cu-II(L-1)Cl]ClO4 (1), [Cu-II(L-2)Cl]ClO4 (2) and [Cu-2(II)(L-3)(2)Cl-2](ClO4)(2) (3) were synthesized and isolated in pure form [where L-1 = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane, L-2 = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane and L-3 = 1,4-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)butane]. All these green colored copper(II) complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The dinuclear copper(II) complex 3 changed to a colorless dinuclear copper(I) species of formula [Cu-2(1)(L-3)(2)](ClO4)(2),0.5H(2)O (4) in dimethylformamide even in the presence of air at ambient temperature, while complexes I and 2 showed no change under similar conditions. The solid-state structures of complexes 1, 2 and 4 were established by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the copper in complexes 1 and 2 is trigonal bipyramidal whereas the coordination environment about the copper(I) in dinuclear complex 4 is distorted tetrahedral. Two new hexa-coordinated mononuclear copper(II) complexes of two ligands L-1 and L-2 containing NSSN donor sets formulated as [Cu(L)(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2) [1a, L = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane (L-1), 1b L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridyl-methylthio)propane (L-2)] were synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. In 1a the single crystal X-ray crystallography analysis showed a distorted octahedral geometry about copper(II) ion. The crystal packing evidences pairs of complexes arranged about a center of symmetry and connected through a H-bond occurring between aquo ligands and nitrate anions. On reaction with chloride and pseudohalides (N-3(-) and SCN-), in acetonitrile at ambient temperature. complexes 1 changed to monocationic penta-coordinated mononuclear copper(H) species formulated as [Cu(L)(Cl)]NO3 (2), [Cu(L)(N-3)]NO3 (3). and [Cu(L)(SCN)]NO3 (4). These copper(II) complexes have been isolated in pure form from the reaction mixtures and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic tools. The solid-state structure of 2a, established by X-ray crystallography, shows a trigonal bipyramidal geometry about the metal ion with a trigonality index (tau) of 0.561. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Background: Total enteral nutrition (TEN) within 48 h of admission has recently been shown to be safe and efficacious as part of the management of severe acute pancreatitis. Our aim was to ascertain the safety of immediate TEN in these patients and the effect of TEN on systemic inflammation, psychological state, oxidative stress, plasma glutamine levels and endotoxaemia. Methods: Patients admitted with predicted severe acute pancreatitis (APACHE II score 15) were randomised to total enteral (TEN; n = 8) or total parenteral nutrition (TPN; n = 9). Measurements of systemic inflammation (C-reactive protein), fatigue ( visual analogue scale), oxidative stress ( plasma thiobarbituric acid- reactive substances), plasma glutamine and anti-endotoxin IgG and IgM antibody concentrations were made on admission and repeated on days 3 and 7 thereafter. Clinical progress was monitored using APACHE II score. Organ failure and complications were recorded. Results: All patients tolerated the feeding regime well with few nutrition-related complications. Fatigue improved in both groups but more rapidly in the TEN group. Oxidative stress was high on admission and rose by similar amounts in both groups. Plasma glutamine concentrations did not change significantly in either group. In the TPN group, 3 patients developed respiratory failure and 3 developed non-respiratory single organ failure. There were no such complications in the TEN group. Hospital stay was shorter in the TEN group [ 7 (4-14) vs. 10 (7-26) days; p = 0.05] as was time to passing flatus and time to opening bowels [1 (0-2) vs. 2 (1-5) days; p = 0.01]. The cost of TEN was considerably less than of TPN. Conclusion: Immediate institution of nutritional support in the form of TEN is safe in predicted severe acute pancreatitis. It is as safe and as efficacious as TPN and may be beneficial in the clinical course of this disease. Copyright (C) 2003 S. Karger AG, Basel and IAP.

The mathematical models that describe the immersion-frying period and the post-frying cooling period of an infinite slab or an infinite cylinder were solved and tested. Results were successfully compared with those found in the literature or obtained experimentally, and were discussed in terms of the hypotheses and simplifications made. The models were used as the basis of a sensitivity analysis. Simulations showed that a decrease in slab thickness and core heat capacity resulted in faster crust development. On the other hand, an increase in oil temperature and boiling heat transfer coefficient between the oil and the surface of the food accelerated crust formation. The model for oil absorption during cooling was analysed using the tested post-frying cooling equation to determine the moment in which a positive pressure driving force, allowing oil suction within the pore, originated. It was found that as crust layer thickness, pore radius and ambient temperature decreased so did the time needed to start the absorption. On the other hand, as the effective convective heat transfer coefficient between the air and the surface of the slab increased the required cooling time decreased. In addition, it was found that the time needed to allow oil absorption during cooling was extremely sensitive to pore radius, indicating the importance of an accurate pore size determination in future studies.

We present updated structure-activity relations (SARs) for the prediction of rate coefficients for gas-phase reactions with alkenes of the major atmospheric oxidants NO3, OH and O-3. Such SARs provide one way of incorporating essential information about reactivity into atmospheric models. Rate coefficients obtained from correlations relating the logarithms of the rate coefficients to the energies of the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of the alkenes were used to refine the SARs. SARs have an advantage for the user over the direct application of the correlations in that knowledge of the structure of the alkene of interest is sufficient to estimate rate coefficients, and no quantum-mechanical calculations need to be performed. A comparison of the values predicted by the SARs with experimental data where they exist allowed us to assess the reliability of our method.

Methods are developed for predicting rate coefficients for reactions of initiators of tropospheric oxidation with unsaturated compounds that are abundant in the atmosphere; prognostic tools of this kind are essential for atmospheric chemists and modellers. To pursue the aim of exploring such tools, the kinetics of reactions of NO3, OH and O-3 with a series of alkenes are examined for correlations relating the logarithms of the rate coefficients to the energies of the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of the alkenes. A comparison of the values predicted by the correlations with experimental data (where the latter exist) allowed us to assess the reliability of our method. We used a series of theoretical methods to calculate the HOMO energies, and found that higher computational effort improves the agreement of the predicted rate coefficients with experimental values, especially for reactions of NO3 with alkenes that possess vinyllic halogen substituents. As a consequence, it is expedient to suggest new correlations to replace those presented by us and others that were based on the lower level of theory. We propose the following correlations for the reactions of NO3, OH and O-3 with alkenes: ln(k(NO3)/cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) = 6.40(E-HOMO/eV) + 31.69, ln(k(OH)/cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) = 1.21 (E-HOMO/eV)-12.34 and ln(k(O3)/cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) = 3.28(E-HOMO/eV)-6.78. These new correlations have been developed using the larger experimental data sets now available, and the impact of the extended data on the quality of the correlations is examined in the paper. Atmospheric lifetimes have been calculated from both experimental and estimated rate coefficients to provide an overview of removal efficiencies for different classes of alkenes with respect to oxidative processes initiated by NO3, OH and O-3. A figure is presented to show the spatial scales over which alkenes may survive transport in competition with attack by NO3, OH and O-3. Removal by NO3 or OH is always more important than removal by O-3, and reactions with NO3 dominate for scales up to a few hundred metres.

The reaction between gas-phase ozone and monolayers of the unsaturated lipid 1-palmitoy1-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, POPC, on aqueous solutions has been studied in real time using neutron reflection and surface pressure measurements. The reaction between ozone and lung surfactant, which contains POPC, leads to decreased pulmonary function, but little is known shout the changes that occur to the interfacial material as a result of oxidation. The results reveal that the initial reaction of ozone with POPC leads to a rapid increase in surface pressure followed by a slow decrease to very low values. The neutron reflection measurements, performed on an isotopologue of POPC with a selectively deuterated palmitoyl strand, reveal that the reaction leads to loss of this strand from the air-water interface. suggesting either solubilization of the product lipid or degradation of the palmitoyl strand by a reactive species. Reactions of H-1-POPC on D2O reveal that the headgroup region of the lipids in aqueous solution is not dramatically perturbed by the reaction of POPC monolayers with ozone supporting degradation of the palmitoyl strand rather than solubilization. The results are consistent with the reaction of ozone with the oleoyl strand of POPC at the air water interface leading to the formation of OH radicals. the highly reactive OH radicals produced can then go on to react with the saturated palmitoyl strands leading to the formation or oxidized lipids with shorter alkyl tails.

Current mathematical models in building research have been limited in most studies to linear dynamics systems. A literature review of past studies investigating chaos theory approaches in building simulation models suggests that as a basis chaos model is valid and can handle the increasing complexity of building systems that have dynamic interactions among all the distributed and hierarchical systems on the one hand, and the environment and occupants on the other. The review also identifies the paucity of literature and the need for a suitable methodology of linking chaos theory to mathematical models in building design and management studies. This study is broadly divided into two parts and presented in two companion papers. Part (I), published in the previous issue, reviews the current state of the chaos theory models as a starting point for establishing theories that can be effectively applied to building simulation models. Part (II) develop conceptual frameworks that approach current model methodologies from the theoretical perspective provided by chaos theory, with a focus on the key concepts and their potential to help to better understand the nonlinear dynamic nature of built environment systems. Case studies are also presented which demonstrate the potential usefulness of chaos theory driven models in a wide variety of leading areas of building research. This study distills the fundamental properties and the most relevant characteristics of chaos theory essential to (1) building simulation scientists and designers (2) initiating a dialogue between scientists and engineers, and (3) stimulating future research on a wide range of issues involved in designing and managing building environmental systems.
