Structural dynamics, dielectric permittivity and ferroelectric properties in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) (PVDF/PMMA) blends with respect to crystalline morphology was systematically investigated in presence of amine functionalized MWNTs (NH2-MWNTs) using dielectric spectroscopy. The crystalline morphology and the crystallization driven demixing in the blends was assessed by light microscopy (LM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) and, in situ, by shear rheology. The crystal nucleation activity of PVDF was greatly induced by NH2-MWNTs, which also showed two distinct structural relaxations in dielectric loss owing to mobility confinement of PVDF chains and smaller cooperative lengths. The presence of crystal-amorphous interphase was supported by the presence of interfacial polarization at lower frequencies in the dielectric loss spectra. On contrary, the control blends showed a single broad relaxation at higher frequency due to defective crystal nuclei. This was further supported by monitoring the dielectric relaxations during isothermal crystallization of PVDF in the blends. These observations were addressed with respect to the spherulite sizes which were observed to be larger in case of blends with NH2-MWNTs. Higher dielectric permittivity with minimal losses was also observed in blends with NH2-MWNTs as compared to neat PVDF. Polarization obtained using P-E (polarization-electric field) hysteresis loops was higher in case of blends with NH2-MWNTs in contrast to control blends and PVDF. These observations were corroborated with the charge trapped at the crystal-amorphous interphase and larger crystal sizes in the blends with NH2-MWNTs. The microstructure and localization of MWNTs were assessed using SEM.

Glasses and glass-nanocrystal (anatase TiO2) composites in BaO-TiO2-B2O3 system were fabricated by conventional melt-quenching technique and controlled heat treatment respectively. Poisson's ratio and Young's moduli were predicted through Makishima-Mackenzie theoretical equation for the as-quenched glasses by taking the four and three coordinated borons into account. Mechanical properties of the glasses and glass-nanocrystal composites were investigated in detail through nanoindentation and microindentation studies. Predicted Young's moduli of glasses were found to be in reasonable agreement with nanoindentation Measurements. Hardness and Young's modulus were enhanced with increasing volume fraction of nanocrystallites of TiO2 in glass matrix whereas fracture toughness was found susceptible to the surface features. The results were correlated to the structural units and nanocrystals present in the glasses. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Correlations between mechanical and photoluminescence properties in Eu doped sodium bismuth titanate
Resumo:
Nanoindentation technique is utilized to examine mechanical property variation in Eu doped Na0.5Bi0.5 TiO3 (NBT). Doping levels of Eu in NBT is systematically varied. Dilute doping results in a linear reduction in both modulus and hardness. At higher concentrations, a recovery of the mechanical properties (to undoped NBT values) is observed. These experimental trends mirror variations in the optical emission intensities with Eu concentration. Observed trends are rationalized on the basis of a model, which hypothesizes phase segregation beyond a critical Eu doping level. Such segregation leads to the formation of pure NBT, nano-Eu saturated NBT, and nano-mixed Eu oxides in the microstructure. Pure NBT is optically inactive, while saturated Eu:NBT is a much better emitter when compared to europium oxide. Hence beyond the critical concentration, luminescence signal comes primarily from the saturated Eu:NBT phase. The model presented is supported by nanoindentation, and spectroscopic results. This paper attempts to gain an understanding of the effect of lamellar length scale on the mechanical properties of two-phase metal-intermetallic eutectic structure. We first develop a molecular dynamics model for the in-situ grown eutectic interface followed by a model of deformation of Al-Al2Cu lamellar eutectic. Leveraging the insights obtained from the simulation on the behaviour of dislocations at different length scales of the eutectic, we present and explain the experimental results on Al-Al2Cu eutectic with various different lamellar spacing. The physics behind the mechanism is further quantified with help of atomic level energy model for different length scale as well as different strain. An atomic level energy partitioning of the lamellae and the interface regions reveals that the energy of the lamellae core are accumulated more due to dislocations irrespective of the length-scale. Whereas the energy of the interface is accumulated more due to dislocations when the length-scale is smaller, but the trend is reversed when the length-scale is large beyond a critical size of about 80 nm. Conducting polymers have the combined advantages of metal conductivity with ease in processing and biocompatibility; making them extremely versatile for biosensor and tissue engineering applications. However, the inherent brittle property of conducting polymers limits their direct use in such applications which generally warrant soft and flexible material responses. Addition of fillers increases the material compliance, but is achieved at the cost of reduced electrical conductivity. To retain suitable conductivity without compromising the mechanical properties, we fabricate an electroactive blend (dPEDOT) using low grade PEDOT: PSS as the base conducting polymer with polyvinyl alcohol as filler and glycerol as a dopant. Bulk dPEDOT films show a thermally stable response till 110 degrees C with over seven fold increase in room temperature conductivity as compared to 0.002 S cm(-1) for pristine PEDOT: PSS. We characterize the nonlinear stress-strain response of dPEDOT, well described using a Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic model, and report elastomer-like moduli with ductility similar to fives times its original length. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows constant storage moduli over a large range of frequencies with corresponding linear increase in tan(delta). We relate the enhanced performance of dPEDOT with the underlying structural constituents using FTIR and AFM microscopy. These data demonstrate specific interactions between individual components of dPEDOT, and their effect on surface topography and material properties. Finally, we show biocompatibility of dPEDOT using fibroblasts that have comparable cell morphologies and viability as the control, which make dPEDOT attractive as a biomaterial.

A unique strategy was adopted here to improve the compatibility between the components of an immiscible polymer blend and strengthen the interface. PMMA, a mutually miscible polymer to both PVDF and ABS, improved the compatibility between the phases by localizing at the blends interface. This was supported by the core-shell formation with PMMA as the shell and ABS as the core as observed from the SEM micrographs. This phenomenon was strongly contingent on the concentration of PMMA in the blends. This strategy was further extended to localize graphene oxide (GO) sheets at the blends interface by chemically coupling it to PMMA (PMMA-g-GO). A dramatic increment of ca. 84% in the Young's modulus and ca. 124% in the yield strength was observed in the presence of PMMA-g-GO with respect to the neat blends. A simultaneous increment in both the strength and the modulus was observed in the presence of PMMA-g-GO whereas, only addition of GO resulted in a moderate improvement in the yield strength. This study reveals that a mutually miscible polymer can render compatibility between the immiscible pair and can improve the stress transfer at the interface.

In the present study, amino-silane modified layered organosilicates were used to reinforce cyclic olefin copolymer to enhance the thermal, mechanical and moisture impermeable barrier properties. The optimum clay loading (4%) in the nanocomposite increases the thermal stability of the film while further loading decreases film stability. Water absorption behavior at 62 degrees C was carried out and compared with the behavior at room temperature and 48 degrees C. The stiffness of the matrix increases with clay content and the recorded strain to failure for the composite films was lower than the neat film. Dynamic mechanical analysis show higher storage modulus and low loss modulus for 2.5-4 wt% clay loading. Calcium degradation test and device encapsulation also show the evidence of optimum clay loading of 4 wt% for improved low water vapor transmission rates compared to other nanocomposite films. Using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we have studied the mechanical properties of ZnS/CdS core/shell nanowires. Our results show that the coating of a few-atomic-layer CdS shell on the ZnS nanowire leads to a significant change in the stiffness of the core/shell nanowires compared to the stiffness of pure ZnS nanowires. The binding energy between the core and shell region decreases due to the lattice mismatch at the core-shell interface. This reduction in binding energy plays an important role in determining the stiffness of a core/shell nanowire. We have also investigated the effects of the shell on the thermal conductivity and melting behavior of the nanowires.

An elastic organic crystal, 2,6-dichlorobenzylidine-4-fluoro-3-nitroaniline (DFNA), which also shows thermosalient behavior, is studied. The presence of these two distinct properties in the same crystal is unusual and unprecedented because they follow respectively from isotropy and anisotropy in the crystal packing. Therefore, while both properties lead from the crystal structure, the mechanisms for bending and thermosalience are quite independent of one another. Crystals of the low-temperature (a) form of the title compound are bent easily without any signs of fracture with the application of deforming stress, and this bending is within the elastic limit. The crystal structure of the a-form was determined (P2(1)/c, Z = 4, a = 3.927(7) angstrom, b = 21.98(4) angstrom, c = 15.32(3) angstrom). There is an irreversible phase transition at 138 degrees C of this form to the high-temperature beta-form followed by melting at 140 degrees C. Variable-temperature X-ray powder diffraction was used to investigate the structural changes across the phase transition and, along with an FTIR study, establishes the structure of the beta-form. A possible rationale for strain build-up is given. Thermosalient behavior arises from anisotropic changes in the three unit cell parameters across the phase transition, notably an increase in the b axis parameter from 21.98 to 22.30 angstrom. A rationale is provided for the existence of both elasticity and thermosalience in the same crystal. FTIR studies across the phase transition reveal important mechanistic insights: (i) increased pi...pi repulsions along 100] lead to expansion along the a axis; (ii) change in alignment of C-Cl and NO2 groups result from density changes; and (iii) competition between short-range repulsive (pi...pi) interactions and long-range attractive dipolar interactions (C-Cl and NO2) could lie at the origin of the existence of two distinctive properties.

Poly(vinyl butyral) - MMT clay nanocomposites were synthesized in situ with three different degrees of acetalization and with varying clay content for each vinyl butyral polymer ratio. The clay nano-platelet galleries were expanded, as determined by X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis. The glass transition temperature of the polymer nanocomposites were found to be similar to 56 degrees C and similar to 52 degrees C for the neat polymer and the 4% clay loaded samples, respectively. The 4 wt% clay loaded film showed higher strength and low strain to failure. The dynamic mechanical analysis also confirmed the improved stability of the matrix. The matrix with 0.5 butyral to alcohol ratio for 4 wt% clay exhibited good water vapor transmission compared to all other compositions. The encapsulated devices with 2.5 and 4 wt% clay loaded films increases the device life time and the efficiencies of these films were 50% higher than their encapsulated pristine polymer films. In order to further investigate nanoindentation data of film-substrate systems and to learn more about the mechanical properties of nanometer film-substrate systems, two kinds of films on different substrate systems have been tested with a systematic variation in film thickness and substrate characteristics. The two kinds of films are aluminum and tungsten, which have been sputtered on to glass and silicon substrates, respectively. Indentation experiments were performed with a Nano Indent XP II with indenter displacements typically about two times the nominal film thicknesses. The resulting data are analyzed in terms of load-displacement curves and various comparative parameters, such as hardness, Young's modulus, unloading stiffness and elastic recovery. Hardness and Young's modulus are investigated when the substrate effects are considered. The results show how the composite hardness and Young's modulus are different for different substrates, different films and different film thicknesses. An assumption of constant Young's modulus is used for the film-substrate system, in which the film and substrate have similar Young's moduli. Composite hardness obtained by the Joslin and Oliver method is compared with the directly measured hardness obtained by the Oliver and Pharr method.

Bonded networks of metal fibres are highly porous, permeable materials, which often exhibit relatively high strength. Material of this type has been produced, using melt-extracted ferritic stainless steel fibres, and characterised in terms of fibre volume fraction, fibre segment (joint-to-joint) length and fibre orientation distribution. Young's moduli and yield stresses have been measured. The behaviour when subjected to a magnetic field has also been investigated. This causes macroscopic straining, as the individual fibres become magnetised and tend to align with the applied field. The modeling approach of Markaki and Clyne, recently developed for prediction of the mechanical and magneto-mechanical properties of such materials, is briefly summarised and comparisons are made with experimental data. The effects of filling the inter-fibre void with compliant (polymeric) matrices have also been explored. In general the modeling approach gives reliable predictions, particularly when the network architecture has been characterised using X-ray tomography. © 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The age-strengthening 2024 aluminum alloy was modified by a combination of plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) and solution-aging treatments. The depth profiles of the implanted layer were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The structure was studied by glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GXRD). The variation of microhardness with the indenting depth was measured by a nanoindenter. The wear test was carried on with a pin-on-disk wear tester. The results revealed that when the aluminum alloys were implanted with nitrogen at the solution temperature, then quenched in the vacuum chamber followed by an artificial aging treatment for an appropriate time, the amount of AIN precipitates by the combined treatment were more than that of the specimen implanted at ambient temperature. Optimum surface mechanical properties were obtained. The surface hardness was increased and the weight loss in a wear test decreased too.

A general analytical model for a composite with an isotropic matrix and two populations of spherical inclusions is proposed. The method is based on the second order moment of stress for evaluating the homogenised effective stress in the matrix and on the secant moduli concept for the plastic deformation. With Webull's statistical law for the strength of SiCp particles, the model can quantitatively predict the influence of particle fracture on the mechanical properties of PMMCs. Application of the proposed model to the particle cluster shows that the particle cluster has neglected influence on the strain and stress curves of the composite. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
