Afonso de Taunay resume e comenta o livro de Lindley em Aventuras de Thomas Lindley.

Analisa a viabilidade, do ponto de vista da constitucionalidade e juridicidade, da promulgação de leis que objetivam atribuir títulos de “capital nacional” a determinadas localidades, tais como “capital nacional da uva, ou “capital nacional da vela”, ou ainda “capital nacional do forró”. A matéria tem relevância devido à quantidade significativa de proposições que com esse objetivo tramitam na Casa.

The Alliance for Coastal Technologies (ACT) Workshop entitled "Technologies for Measuring Currents in Coastal Environments" was held in Portland, Maine, October 26-28, 2005, with sponsorship by the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS), an ACT partner organization. The primary goals of the event were to summarize recent trends in nearshore research and management applications for current meter technologies, identify how current meters can assist coastal managers to fulfill their regulatory and management objectives, and to recommend actions to overcome barriers to use of the technologies. The workshop was attended by 25 participants representing state and federal environmental management agencies, manufacturers of current meter technologies, and researchers from academic institutions and private industry. Common themes that were discussed during the workshop included 1) advantages and limitations of existing current measuring equipment, 2) reliability and ease of use with each instrument type, 3) data decoding and interpretation procedures, and 4) mechanisms to facilitate better training and guidance to a broad user group. Seven key recommendations, which were ranked in order of importance during the last day of the workshop are listed below. 1. Forums should be developed to facilitate the exchange of information among users and industry: a) On-line forums that not only provide information on specific instruments and technologies, but also provide an avenue for the exchange of user experiences with various instruments (i.e. problems encountered, cautions, tips, advantages, etc). (see References for manufacturer websites with links to application and technical forums at end of report) b) Regional training/meetings for operational managers to exchange ideas on methods for measuring currents and evaluating data. c) Organize mini-meetings or tutorial sessions within larger conference venues. 2. A committee of major stakeholders should be convened to develop common standards (similar to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) committee) that enable users to switch sensors without losing software or display capabilities. Laburpena: Bost urteko gela batean burututako ikerketa lan honen bidez, gure inguruko eskoletan ohikoa den egoera aztertu nahi da. Hots, eskoletan ematen diren gatazka egoerak, hain zuzen ere. Gainera, argi izan behar dugu hauek ondo bideratzen ez badira biolentzia edota agresibitate egoerak bilakatu daitezkeela. Gatazka hauek bi eratan ulertu daitezke: alde batetik, umearen jokabide negatibo gisa; edota, gaiaren inguruko hausnarketa sakona eginez gero, umeak ingurunea ulertzeko eta horrekin interakzioak egiteko erabiltzen dituen ikasketa mekanismo gisa. Argi dago beraz, gatazka hauen izaera parametro ezberdinek osatzen dutela: irakaslearen papera, eskainitako baliabideak, umearen garapena, etab. Ikuspuntu honetatik lanean ikasgelan bizi izandako gatazken ezaugarrien frekuentzia erregistroa egin da. This work seeks to understand past and present surface conditions on the Moon using two different but complementary approaches: topographic analysis using high-resolution elevation data from recent spacecraft missions and forward modeling of the dominant agent of lunar surface modification, impact cratering. The first investigation focuses on global surface roughness of the Moon, using a variety of statistical parameters to explore slopes at different scales and their relation to competing geological processes. We find that highlands topography behaves as a nearly self-similar fractal system on scales of order 100 meters, and there is a distinct change in this behavior above and below approximately 1 km. Chapter 2 focuses this analysis on two localized regions: the lunar south pole, including Shackleton crater, and the large mare-filled basins on the nearside of the Moon. In particular, we find that differential slope, a statistical measure of roughness related to the curvature of a topographic profile, is extremely useful in distinguishing between geologic units. Chapter 3 introduces a numerical model that simulates a cratered terrain by emplacing features of characteristic shape geometrically, allowing for tracking of both the topography and surviving rim fragments over time. The power spectral density of cratered terrains is estimated numerically from model results and benchmarked against a 1-dimensional analytic model. The power spectral slope is observed to vary predictably with the size-frequency distribution of craters, as well as the crater shape. The final chapter employs the rim-tracking feature of the cratered terrain model to analyze the evolving size-frequency distribution of craters under different criteria for identifying "visible" craters from surviving rim fragments. A geometric bias exists that systematically over counts large or small craters, depending on the rim fraction required to count a given feature as either visible or erased.
