P>In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the infection and subsequent immunity induced by Strongyloides venezuelensis in Lewis rats. Animals were infected with 4000 L3 of S. venezuelensis and number of eggs per gram of faeces indicated an acute phase around day 8 and a recovery phase around day 32 after infection. A strong Th2 polarization during recovery phase was ascertained by a significant increase in IgG1 and IgE compared with that in the acute period. A shift in the cytokine profile confirmed these findings. A predominant production of IFN-gamma during the acute phase was followed by IL-10 production during recovery. Together these findings show that experimental infection of Lewis rats with S. venezuelensis presents a kinetics of parasite establishment and immunity similar to that described in other models of helminthic infection.

An Aspergillus giganteus strain was isolated as an excellent producer of xylanase associated with low levels of cellulase. Optimal xylanase production was obtained in liquid VOGEL medium containing xylan as carbon source, pH 6.5 to 7.0, at 25degreesC and. under shaking at 120 rpm during 84h. Among the several carbon sources tested, higher xylanase production was verified in xylan, xylose, sugar-cane bagasse, wheat bran and corn cob cultures, respectively. Optimal conditions for activity determination were 50degreesC and pH 6.0. The xylanolytic complex of A. giganteus showed low thermal stability with T-50 of 2 h, 13 min and I min when it was incubated at 40, 50 and 60degreesC, respectively, and high stability from pH 4.5 to 10.5, with the best interval between 7.0 to 7.5. This broad range of stability in alkali pH indicates a potential applicability in some industrial processes, which require such condition. Xylanolytic activity of A. giganteus was totally inhibited by Hg+2, Cu+2 and SDS at 10 mm. The analysis of the products from the oat spelts xylan hydrolysis through thin-layer chromatography indicated endoxylanase activity, lack of debranching enzymes and P-xylosidase activity in assay conditions.

Human hemoglobin genes are located in α and β globin gene clusters in chromosomes 16 and 11, respectively. Different types of hemoglobin are synthesized according to the stage of development with fetal hemoglobin (α2γ2) (Hb F) being the main hemoglobin in the fetal period. After birth, there is a reduction (to about 1%) in Hb F levels and adult hemoglobin, Hb A (2α2β2), increases to more than 96% of total hemoglobin. However, some genetic conditions whether linked to the β-globin gene cluster or not are associated with high Hb F levels in adults. Among those linked to β-globin are hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin, delta-beta thalassemia (δβ-Thalassemia) and the XmnI polymorphism (-158 C > T). Other polymorphisms not related to β-globin gene cluster are known to influence the γ-globin gene expression in adulthood. The most relevant polymorphisms that increase concentrations of Hb F are the HMIP locus on chromosome 6, the BCL11A locus on chromosome 2, the Xp22.2 region of the X chromosome and the 8q region on chromosome 8. Findings from our research group studying genetic factors involved in γ-globin gene regulation in adults without anemia in the northwestern region of São Paulo State showed that high Hb F levels are influenced by the presence of hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin mutations and the XmnI polymorphism, suggesting that both genetic alterations characterize the molecular basis of the evaluated population.

We study the process p (p) over bar --> gammagammagamma as a signal for associated photon-technipion production at the Tevatron. This is a clean signature with relatively low background. Resonant and non-resonant contributions are included and we show that technicolor models can be effectively probed in this mode. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a study of events with Z bosons and associated jets produced at the Fermilab Tevatron collider in p p collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV The data sample consists of nearly 14000 Z/gamma* -> e(+)e(-) candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.4 fb(-1) collected with the D circle divide detector. Ratios of the Z/gamma*+ >= n jet cross sections to the total inclusive Z/gamma* cross section have been measured for n = 1-4 jets, and found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order QCD calculation and with a tree-level QCD prediction with parton shower simulation and hadronization. The mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking ( EWSB) will be directly scrutinized soon at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We analyze the LHC potential to look for new vector bosons associated with the EWSB sector, presenting a possible model independent approach to search for these new spin-1 resonances. We show that the analyses of the processes pp -> l(+)l(1-)E(T), l +/- jjE(T), l(1 +/-)l(+)l(-)E(T), l(+/-)jjE(T), and l(+)l(-) jj (with l, l' = e or mu and j = jet) have a large reach at the LHC and can lead to the discovery or exclusion of many EWSB scenarios such as Higgsless models.
