This study focuses on the temperature dependent optical band gap changes in the amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) films. The behavior of the amorphous GST thin films at low temperatures has been studied. The band gap increment of around 0.2 eV is observed at low temperature (4.2 K) compared to room temperature (300 K). The band gap changes associated with the temperature are completely reversible. The other optical parameters like Urbach energy and Tauc parameter (B-1/2) are studied for different temperatures and discussed. The observed changes in optical band gap (E-g) are fitting to Fan's one phonon approximation. Phonon energy ((h) over bar omega) corresponding to a frequency of 3.59 THz is derived from Fan's approximation, which is close to the reported value of 3.66 THz. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Effective usage of image guidance by incorporating the refractive index (RI) variation in computational modeling of light propagation in tissue is investigated to assess its impact on optical-property estimation. With the aid of realistic patient breast three-dimensional models, the variation in RI for different regions of tissue under investigation is shown to influence the estimation of optical properties in image-guided diffuse optical tomography (IG-DOT) using numerical simulations. It is also shown that by assuming identical RI for all regions of tissue would lead to erroneous estimation of optical properties. The a priori knowledge of the RI for the segmented regions of tissue in IG-DOT, which is difficult to obtain for the in vivo cases, leads to more accurate estimates of optical properties. Even inclusion of approximated RI values, obtained from the literature, for the regions of tissue resulted in better estimates of optical properties, with values comparable to that of having the correct knowledge of RI for different regions of tissue.

The low-lying singlets and triplets of biphenyl are obtained exactly within the PPP model using the diagrammatic valence bond method. The energy gaps within the singlet manifold as well as the lowest singlet-triplet gap are found to be in good agreement with experimental results. The two weak absorptions between 4·1 and 4·2 eV reported experimentally are attributed to the two states lying below the optical gap that become weakly allowed on breaking electron-hole and inversion symmetries. The observed blue shift of the spectral lines, attributed to a change in dihedral angle, on going from crystalline to solution to vapour phase is also well reproduced within the PPP model. The bond orders show that the ground singlet state is benzenoidal while the dipole excited state as well as the lowest triplet state are quinonoidal and planar. Comparison with the experimental spin densities and the fine structure constants D and E in the triplet state point to slightly weaker correlations than assumed by the PPP model. The introduction of a 1-8 bond to mimic poly(paraphenylene)s gives an optical gap that is in good agreement with experiment.

Exposure with above band gap light and thermal annealing at a temperature near to glass transition temperature, of thermally evaporated amorphous (As2S3)(0.87)Sb-0.13 thin films of 1 mu m thickness, were found to be accompanied by structural effects, which in turn, lead to changes in the optical properties. The optical properties of thin films induced by illumination and annealing were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Photo darkening or photo bleaching was observed in the film depending upon the conditions of the light exposure or annealing. These changes of the optical properties are assigned to the change of homopolar bond densities. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A holographic optical element (HOE) based single-mode hybrid fiber optic interferometer for realizing the zero-order fringe is described. The HOE proposed and used integrates the actions of a beam combiner and a lens, and endows the interferometer with high tolerance for repositioning errors. The proposed method is simple and offers advantages such as the elimination of in situ processing for the hologram.

Tin sulfide (SnS) is a material of interest for use as an absorber in low cost solar cells. Single crystals of SnS were grown by the physical vapor deposition technique. The grown crystals were characterized to evaluate the composition, structure, morphology, electrical and optical properties using appropriate techniques. The composition analysis indicated that the crystals were nearly stoichiometric with Sn-to-S atomic percent ratio of 1.02. Study of their morphology revealed the layered type growth mechanism with low surface roughness. The grown crystals had orthorhombic structure with (0 4 0) orientation. They exhibited an indirect optical band gap of 1.06 eV and direct band gap of 1.21 eV with high absorption coefficient (up to 10(3) cm(-1)) above the fundamental absorption edge. The grown crystals were of p-type with an electrical resistivity of 120 Omega cm and carrier concentration 1.52 x 10(15) cm(-3). Analysis of optical absorption and diffuse reflectance spectra showed the presence of a wide absorption band in the wavelength range 300-1200 nm, which closely matches with a significant part of solar radiation spectrum. The obtained results were discussed to assess the suitability of the SnS crystal for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies have been carried out at room temperature in 25 R2O-25 GeO2-49.5 B2O3-0.5 Nd2O3 glass systems, (Composition in mol%, R= Li, Na, K and Rb). Judd Ofelt Intensity parameters and other parameters like Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), Slater-Condon-Shortley (F-2, F-4 and F-6) Spin-Orbit Coupling (xi(4f)) and Configuration Interaction (alpha, beta and gamma) for Nd3+ ion in the glass system are calculated. The variation of the 02 parameters are interpreted in terms of the covalency of the RE ion in the glass matrix. Further the hypersensitive transition I-4(9/2) -> (4)G(5/2), (2)G(7/2) is analyzed with respect to the intensity ratio I-L/I-S and is found to be dependent on the type of alkali in the glass matrix. The Photoluminescence studies do not show any appreciable shift in the peak emission wavelength of the F-4(3/2) to I-4(11/2) transition with the change in alkali type. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Transparent BaNaB9O15 (BNBO), BaLiB9O15 (BLBO) and SrLiB9O15 (SLBO) glasses were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Differential thermal analysis (DTA) studies carried out on the as-quenched glasses confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. The optical properties for these as-quenched glasses were investigated. The refractive index, optical band gap. Urbach energy and Fermi energy were determined. The average electronic polarizability calculated from the refractive index expression. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This article describes a facile, low-cost, solution-phase approach to the large-scale preparation of Hg1-xCdxTe nanostructures of different shapes such as nanorods, quantum dots, hexagonal cubes of different sizes and different compositions at a growth temperature of 180 degrees C using an air stable Te source by solvothermal technique. The XRD spectrum shows that the crystals are cubic in their basic structure and reveals the variation in lattice constant as a function of composition. The size and morphology of the products were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation of irregular shaped particles and few nano-rods in the present synthesis is attributed to the cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The room temperature FTIR absorption and PL studies for a compositon of x = 0.8 gives a band gap of 1.1 eV and a broad emission in NIR region (0.5-0.9 eV) with all bands attributed to surface defects.

Cu (0.1 mol%) doped ZnO nanopowders have been successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method at a relatively low temperature (300 degrees C). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements were used for characterization. PXRD results confirm that the nanopowders exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO without any secondary phase. The particle size of as-formed product has been calculated by Williamson-Hall (W-H) plots and Scherrer's formula is found to be in the range of similar to 40 nm. TEM image confirms the nano size crystalline nature of Cu doped ZnO. SEM micrographs of undoped and Cu doped ZnO show highly porous with large voids. UV-Vis spectrum showed a red shift in the absorption edge in Cu doped ZnO. PL spectra show prominent peaks corresponding to near band edge UV emission and defect related green emission in the visible region at room temperature and their possible mechanisms have been discussed. The EPR spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049, and two narrow resonances one at g similar to 1.990 and other at g similar to 1.950. The broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049 is a characteristic of Cu2+ ion whereas the signal at g similar to 1.990 and g similar to 1.950 can be attributed to ionized oxygen vacancies and shallow donors respectively. The spin concentration (N) and paramagnetic susceptibility (X) have been evaluated and discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

We report the structural and optical properties of a-plane GaN film grown on r-plane sapphire substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. High resolution X-ray diffraction was used to determine the out-of-plane and in-plane epitaxial relation of a-plane GaN to r-plane sapphire. Low-temperature photoluminescence emission was found to be dominated by basal stacking faults along with near-band emission. Raman spectroscopy shows that the a-GaN film is of reasonably good quality and compressively strained. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We study linear and nonlinear optical properties of two push-pull polyenes stacked in head to head (HtH) and head to tail (HtT) configurations, at different stacking angles within the Pariser-Parr-Pople model using exact diagonalization method. By varying the stacking angle between the polyenes, we find that the optical gap varies marginally, but transition dipoles show large variations. We find that the dominant first-order hyperpolarizability component beta(XXX) for HtH arrangement and beta(YYY) for HtT arrangement strongly depend on the distance of separation between molecules, while the other smaller component beta(XYY) for HtH arrangement and beta(XXY) for HtT arrangement) does not show this variation with distance. We find that the beta(XXX) for HtH configuration shows a maximum at an angle away from 0, in contrast with the oriented gas model. This angle varies with distance between the polyenes, and at large distance it falls to 0. The ratio of all components of beta of a dimer to monomer is less than two for HtH configuration for all angles. But for HtT configurations the ratio of the dominant beta component is greater than two at large angles. Our ZINDO study on two monomers (4-hydroxy-4'-nitroazobenzene) connected in a nonconjugative fashion shows a linear increase in vertical bar(beta) over right arrow (av)vertical bar without much red shift in optical gap. There is a linear increase in vertical bar(beta) over right arrow (av)vertical bar with increase in number of monomers connected nonconjugatively without resulting in a red shift in optical gap.

Differently hydrated sodium p-nitrophenolate (NPNa) crystals were obtained while growing them from different solvents such as methanol and water. Thermal analysis and powder X-ray diffraction studies were carried out on these crystals. Kurtz powder SHG technique was used for qualitative assessment of their nonlinear optical (NLO) activity. From the detailed single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies it is established that NPNa has three different forms, of which only one is found to possess NLO activity. Additionally, a new NLO active crystal was also found to grow from aqueous solution. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new series of twin nonlinear optical (NLO) molecules, having two 4-nitrophenol chromophores that are linked via a flexible polymethylene spacer of varying length [(CH2)(n), n = 1-12], were synthesized. Powder second harmonic generation measurements of these twin samples indicated a pronounced odd-even oscillation, with the odd twins exhibiting a high SHG value while the even ones gave no measurable SH signal. This behavior reflects the crystal packing preferences in such twin NLO systems that have odd and even numbers of atoms linking them - the even ones appear to prefer a centrosymmetric packing arrangement. The orientational/disordering dynamics of these twin NLO molecules, doped in a polymer (poly(methyl methacrylate)) matrix, has also been studied using SHG in electric field poled samples. Interestingly, the maximum attainable SH signal, chi((2)), in, the poled samples also showed an odd-even oscillation; the odd ones again having a higher value of chi((2)) This unprecedented odd-even oscillation in such molecularly doped systems is rationalized as being due to the intrinsically greater ease of a parallel alignment of the two chromophores in the twins with an odd spacer than in those with an even one. Further, the temporal stability of the SHG intensity at 70 degrees C, after the removal of the applied corona, was also studied. The relaxation of all the twin chromophores followed a biexponential decay; the characteristic relaxation time (tau(2)) for the slow decay component suggests that while the twin with a single methylene unit relaxes relatively slowly, the relaxation is significantly faster in cases where n = 2 and 3. In the twins with even longer spacer segments, the relaxation again becomes slower and reaches a saturation value. The observed minimum appears to reflect the interplay of two competing factors that affect the chromophore alignment in such twin systems, namely, the electrostatic repulsion between neighboring oriented dipoles and the intrinsic flexibility of the spacer.

Two methods based on wavelet/wavelet packet expansion to denoise and compress optical tomography data containing scattered noise are presented, In the first, the wavelet expansion coefficients of noisy data are shrunk using a soft threshold. In the second, the data are expanded into a wavelet packet tree upon which a best basis search is done. The resulting coefficients are truncated on the basis of energy content. It can be seen that the first method results in efficient denoising of experimental data when scattering particle density in the medium surrounding the object was up to 12.0 x 10(6) per cm(3). This method achieves a compression ratio of approximate to 8:1. The wavelet packet based method resulted in a compression of up to 11:1 and also exhibited reasonable noise reduction capability. Tomographic reconstructions obtained from denoised data are presented. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved,
