Polymers are typically electrically and thermally insulating materials. The electrical and thermal conductivities of polymers can be increased by the addition conductive fillers such as carbons. Once the polymer composites have been made electrically and thermally conductive, they can be used in applications where these conductivities are desired such as electromagnetic shielding and static dissipation. In this project, three carbon nanomaterials are added to polycarbonate to enhance the electrical and thermal conductivity of the resulting composite. Hyperion Catalysis FIBRILs carbon nanotubes were added to a maximum loading of 8 wt%. Ketjenblack EC-600 JD carbon black was added to a maximum loading of 10 wt%. XG Sciences xGnP™ graphene nanoplatelets were added to a maximum loading of 15 wt%. These three materials have drastically different morphologies and will have varying effects on the various properties of polycarbonate composites. It was determined that carbon nanotubes have the largest effect on electrical conductivity with an 8 wt% carbon nanotube in polycarbonate composite having an electrical conductivity of 0.128 S/cm (from a pure polycarbonate value of 10-17 S/cm). Carbon black has the next largest effect with an 8 wt% carbon black in polycarbonate composite having an electrical conductivity of 0.008 S/cm. Graphene nanoplatelets have the least effect with an 8 wt% graphene nanoplatelet in polycarbonate having an electrical conductivity of 2.53 x 10-8 S/cm. Graphene nanoplatelets show a significantly higher effect on increasing thermal conductivity than either carbon nanotubes or carbon black. Mechanically, all three materials have similar effects with graphene nanoplatelets being somewhat more effective at increasing the tensile modulus of the composite than the other fillers. Carbon black and graphene nanoplatelets show standard carbon-filler rheology where the addition of filler increases the viscosity of the resulting composite. Carbon nanotubes, on the other hand, show an unexpected rheology. As carbon nanotubes are added to polycarbonate the viscosity of the composite is reduced below that of the original polycarbonate. It was seen that the addition of carbon nanotubes offsets the increased viscosity from a second filler, such as carbon black or graphene nanoplatelets.

Highway infrastructure plays a significant role in society. The building and upkeep of America’s highways provide society the necessary means of transportation for goods and services needed to develop as a nation. However, as a result of economic and social development, vast amounts of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are emitted into the atmosphere contributing to global climate change. In recognizing this, future policies may mandate the monitoring of GHG emissions from public agencies and private industries in order to reduce the effects of global climate change. To effectively reduce these emissions, there must be methods that agencies can use to quantify the GHG emissions associated with constructing and maintaining the nation’s highway infrastructure. Current methods for assessing the impacts of highway infrastructure include methodologies that look at the economic impacts (costs) of constructing and maintaining highway infrastructure over its life cycle. This is known as Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA). With the recognition of global climate change, transportation agencies and contractors are also investigating the environmental impacts that are associated with highway infrastructure construction and rehabilitation. A common tool in doing so is the use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Traditionally, LCA is used to assess the environmental impacts of products or processes. LCA is an emerging concept in highway infrastructure assessment and is now being implemented and applied to transportation systems. This research focuses on life cycle GHG emissions associated with the construction and rehabilitation of highway infrastructure using a LCA approach. Life cycle phases of the highway section include; the material acquisition and extraction, construction and rehabilitation, and service phases. Departing from traditional approaches that tend to use LCA as a way to compare alternative pavement materials or designs based on estimated inventories, this research proposes a shift to a context sensitive process-based approach that uses actual observed construction and performance data to calculate greenhouse gas emissions associated with highway construction and rehabilitation. The goal is to support strategies that reduce long-term environmental impacts. Ultimately, this thesis outlines techniques that can be used to assess GHG emissions associated with construction and rehabilitation operations to support the overall pavement LCA.

This paper marks an increased refinement and more detailed accuracy in the description of the geological features of the state. It includes the recent studies of mineral deposits, of oil structures, of the formations of bedded rocks and their included fossils, carried on both by the Federal and State governments and by various interested private persons, such as the mining companies. It is within this period that the Federal Government encouraged the U. S. Geological Survey in the publication of monographs on the National Parks, papers of great popular interest and educational value making these beautiful regions comprehensible in their geological features to the touring public.

Warnings are used to inform users of hazards that may be associated with many products. Often these warnings deal with the operation of tools, appliances, and other items for which the user may have some reason at least, to look for information on the product regarding its use. Plastic film presents a serious hazard to young children. Because the film will adhere to the flesh, if it covers the airways for the child, suffocation may result. Because young children may play with them, it is important that such films be kept away from them. Warnings need to be adequate to inform or remind caregivers of this fact. This study examined warnings found on various items in commerce and some alternatives to those warnings. The results showed some warnings to be poor at best. The alternative most preferred included both the prohibition sign and a symbolic indication of proper disposal.

The pathogenetic mechanism of hearing loss in patients with vestibular schwannomas (VS) remains unclear. Our aim was to determine the radiological and clinical parameters that might be related to hearing. The radiological images and charts of 99 patients were reviewed. Image processing software was used to analyse the maximal tumor diameter in three planes; its volume; its extension cranially, caudally, anteriorly and posteriorly; the width and length of the intrameatal tumor portion, its shape and consistency; and the tumor-fundus distance. These parameters were correlated with the patient's pre-operative hearing range. The degree of hearing correlated significantly with the tumor size, volume and coronal diameter, the degree of intrameatal tumor growth, and the distance between the lateral tumor end and the fundus (p < 0.05). No correlation was found regarding tumor extension, shape and consistency, the presence of hydrocephalus, or the extent of erosion of the internal auditory canal. Loss of hearing in the VS appears to be multifactorial. Determining the radiological parameters related to the hearing level can help to clarify the pathophysiological mechanisms involved.

OBJECTIVES To analyze the prognostic value of clinical tumor response during chemoradiation for locally advanced head and neck cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS The locoregional response at 50.4Gy was assessed by physical examination (PE) in patients treated within the randomized trial SAKK 10/94 using hyperfractionated radiotherapy (RT), median total dose 74.4Gy with or without cisplatin 20mg/m(2) chemotherapy on 5 consecutive days during weeks 1 and 5 or 6 of RT. Response was classified as a complete response (CR), complete response with uncertainty (Cru), partial response (PR), stable disease (SD), or progressive disease (PD). The primary endpoint was time to treatment failure (TTF) due to any cause. Secondary endpoints included locoregional-recurrence-free survival (LRRFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) and overall survival (OS). Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards (PH) models were applied to analyze the associations between survival endpoints and clinical tumor response. RESULTS A total of 136, 131 and 97 patients were evaluable for response at the primary tumor, lymph nodes and both sites combined, respectively. At 50.4Gy 57/136 (42%), 46/131 (35%) and 21/97 (22%) patients had a good response (CR/Cru vs. PR/SD) at the primary tumor, the lymph nodes, and both sites combined, respectively. The median follow-up times were 11.4, 9.6 and 11.4years for the three groups. Good responses were all significantly associated with improved TTF, LRRFS, DMFS and OS in univariate analysis whereas good response at the primary tumor and lymph nodes remained significantly associated with TTF and OS after multivariate Cox PH models. CONCLUSIONS Locoregional response at 50.4Gy was identified as predictor of oncologic outcome. PE during treatment should not be underestimated in clinical practice.
