[1] Recent experiments conducted over the oceanic regions adjacent to the Indian sub continent have revealed the presence of anthropogenic aerosol haze during January to March. It has been suggested that the major source of this aerosol is South and Southeast Asia. Here we show from long term, multi-station and ship borne observations that aerosols transported from regions northwest of Indian subcontinent especially Arabian and Saharan regions (mostly natural dust) along with the locally produced sea-salt aerosols by sea-surface winds constitute a more significant source of aerosols during April-May period. The radiative forcing due to Arabian/Saharan aerosols (mostly natural) during April May period is comparable and often exceed (as much as 1.5 times) the forcing due to anthropogenic aerosols during January to March period. The presence of dust load over the Arabian Sea can influence the temperature profile and radiative balance in this region.

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Prp17p is required for the efficient completion of the second step of pre-mRNA splicing. The function and interacting factors for this protein have not been elucidated. We have performed a mutational analysis of yPrp17p to identify protein domains critical for function. A series of deletions were made throughout the region spanning the N-terminal 158 amino acids of the protein, which do not contain any identified structural motifs. The C-terminal portion (amino acids 160–455) contains a WD domain containing seven WD repeats. We determined that a minimal functional Prp17p consists of the WD domain and 40 amino acids N-terminal to it. We generated a three-dimensional model of the WD repeats in Prp17p based on the crystal structure of the [beta]-transducin WD domain. This model was used to identify potentially important amino acids for in vivo functional characterization. Through analysis of mutations in four different loops of Prp17p that lie between [beta] strands in the WD repeats, we have identified four amino acids, 235TETG238, that are critical for function. These amino acids are predicted to be surface exposed and may be involved in interactions that are important for splicing. Temperature-sensitive prp17 alleles with mutations of these four amino acids are defective for the second step of splicing and are synthetically lethal with a U5 snRNA loop I mutation, which is also required for the second step of splicing. These data reinforce the functional significance of this region within the WD domain of Prp17p in the second step of splicing.

We formulate a two-stage Iterative Wiener filtering (IWF) approach to speech enhancement, bettering the performance of constrained IWF, reported in literature. The codebook constrained IWF (CCIWF) has been shown to be effective in achieving convergence of IWF in the presence of both stationary and non-stationary noise. To this, we include a second stage of unconstrained IWF and show that the speech enhancement performance can be improved in terms of average segmental SNR (SSNR), Itakura-Saito (IS) distance and Linear Prediction Coefficients (LPC) parameter coincidence. We also explore the tradeoff between the number of CCIWF iterations and the second stage IWF iterations.

In this paper, expressions for convolution multiplication properties of MDCT are derived starting from the equivalent DFT representations. Using these expressions, methods for implementing linear filtering through block convolution in the MDCT domain are presented. The implementation is exact for symmetric filters and approximate for non-symmetric filters in the case of rectangular window based MDCT. For a general MDCT window function, the filtering is done on the windowed segments and hence the convolution is approximate for symmetric as well as non-symmetric filters. This approximation error is shown to be perceptually insignificant for symmetric impulse response filters. Moreover, the inherent $50 \%$ overlap between adjacent frames used in MDCT computation does reduce this approximation error similar to smoothing of other block processing errors. The presented techniques are useful for compressed domain processing of audio signals.

The paper presents an adaptive Fourier filtering technique and a relaying scheme based on a combination of a digital band-pass filter along with a three-sample algorithm, for applications in high-speed numerical distance protection. To enhance the performance of above-mentioned technique, a high-speed fault detector has been used. MATLAB based simulation studies show that the adaptive Fourier filtering technique provides fast tripping for near faults and security for farther faults. The digital relaying scheme based on a combination of digital band-pass filter along with three-sample data window algorithm also provides accurate and high-speed detection of faults. The paper also proposes a high performance 16-bit fixed point DSP (Texas Instruments TMS320LF2407A) processor based hardware scheme suitable for implementation of the above techniques. To evaluate the performance of the proposed relaying scheme under steady state and transient conditions, PC based menu driven relay test procedures are developed using National Instruments LabVIEW software. The test signals are generated in real time using LabVIEW compatible analog output modules. The results obtained from the simulation studies as well as hardware implementations are also presented.

Two models for large eddy simulation of turbulent reacting flow in homogeneous turbulence were studied. The sub-grid stress arising out of non-linearities of the Navier-Stokes equations were modeled using an explicit filtering approach. A filtered mass density function (FMDF) approach was used for closure of the sub-grid scalar fluctuations. A posteriori calculations, when compared with the results from the direct numerical simulation, indicate that the explicit filtering is adequate in representing the effect of sub-grid stress on the filtered velocity field in the absence of reaction. Discrepancies arise when reactions occur, but the FMDF approach suffices to account for sub-grid scale fluctuations of the reacting scalars, accurately.

We recast the reconstruction problem of diffuse optical tomography (DOT) in a pseudo-dynamical framework and develop a method to recover the optical parameters using particle filters, i.e., stochastic filters based on Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we have implemented two such filters, viz., the bootstrap (BS) filter and the Gaussian-sum (GS) filter and employed them to recover optical absorption coefficient distribution from both numerically simulated and experimentally generated photon fluence data. Using either indicator functions or compactly supported continuous kernels to represent the unknown property distribution within the inhomogeneous inclusions, we have drastically reduced the number of parameters to be recovered and thus brought the overall computation time to within reasonable limits. Even though the GS filter outperformed the BS filter in terms of accuracy of reconstruction, both gave fairly accurate recovery of the height, radius, and location of the inclusions. Since the present filtering algorithms do not use derivatives, we could demonstrate accurate contrast recovery even in the middle of the object where the usual deterministic algorithms perform poorly owing to the poor sensitivity of measurement of the parameters. Consistent with the fact that the DOT recovery, being ill posed, admits multiple solutions, both the filters gave solutions that were verified to be admissible by the closeness of the data computed through them to the data used in the filtering step (either numerically simulated or experimentally generated). Pre-whitening techniques are employed in blind correlation detection of additive spread spectrum watermarks in audio signals to reduce the host signal interference. A direct deterministic whitening (DDW) scheme is derived in this paper from the frequency domain analysis of the time domain correlation process. Our experimental studies reveal that, the Savitzky-Golay Whitening (SGW), which is otherwise inferior to DDW technique, performs better when the audio signal is predominantly lowpass. The novelty of this paper lies in exploiting the complementary nature to the two whitening techniques to obtain a hybrid whitening (HbW) scheme. In the hybrid scheme the DDW and SGW techniques are selectively applied, based on short time spectral characteristics of the audio signal. The hybrid scheme extends the reliability of watermark detection to a wider range of audio signals.

Image filtering techniques have numerous potential applications in biomedical imaging and image processing. The design of filters largely depends on the a-priori knowledge about the type of noise corrupting the image and image features. This makes the standard filters to be application and image specific. The most popular filters such as average, Gaussian and Wiener reduce noisy artifacts by smoothing. However, this operation normally results in smoothing of the edges as well. On the other hand, sharpening filters enhance the high frequency details making the image non-smooth. An integrated general approach to design filters based on discrete cosine transform (DCT) is proposed in this study for optimal medical image filtering. This algorithm exploits the better energy compaction property of DCT and re-arrange these coefficients in a wavelet manner to get the better energy clustering at desired spatial locations. This algorithm performs optimal smoothing of the noisy image by preserving high and low frequency features. Evaluation results show that the proposed filter is robust under various noise distributions.

A novel PCR based assay was devised to specifically detect contamination of any Salmonella serovar in milk, fruit juice and ice-cream without pre-enrichment. This method utilizes primers against hilA gene which is conserved in all Salmonella serovars and absent from the close relatives of Salmonella. An optimized protocol, in terms time and money, is provided for the reduction of PCR contaminants from milk, ice-cream and juice through the use of routine laboratory chemicals. The simplicity, efficiency (time taken 3-4 h) and sensitivity (to about 5-10 CFU/ml) of this technique confers a unique advantage over other previously used time consuming detection techniques. This technique does not involve pre-enrichment of the samples or extensive sample processing, which was a pre-requisite in most of the other reported studies. Hence, this assay can be ideal for adoption, after further fine tuning, by food quality control for timely detection of Salmonella contamination as well as other food-borne pathogens (with species specific primers) in food especially milk, ice-cream and fruit juice. The instants at which significant excitation of vocal tract take place during voicing are referred to as epochs. Epochs and strengths of excitation pulses at epochs are useful in characterizing voice source. Epoch filtering technique proposed by the authors determine epochs from speech waveform. In this paper we propose zero-phase inverse filtering to obtain strengths of excitation pulses at epochs. Zero-phase inverse filter compensates the gross spectral envelope of short-time spectrum of speech without affecting phase characteristics. Linear prediction analysis is used to realize the zero-phase inverse filter. Source characteristics that can be derived from speech using this technique are illustrated with examples.

In lean premixed pre-vaporized (LPP) combustion, controlled atomization, dispersion and vaporization of different types of liquid fuel in the premixer are the key factors required to stabilize the combustion process and improve the efficiency. The dispersion and vaporization process for biofuels and conventional fuels sprayed into a crossflow pre-mixer have been simulated and analyzed with respect to vaporization rate, degree of mixedness and homogeneity. Two major biofuels under investigation are Ethanol and Rapeseed Methyl Esters (RME), while conventional fuels are gasoline and jet-A. First, the numerical code is validated by comparing with the experimental data of single n-heptane and decane droplet evaporating under both moderate and high temperature convective air now. Next, the spray simulations were conducted with monodispersed droplets with an initial diameter of 80 mu m injected into a turbulent crossflow of air with a typical velocity of 10 m/s and temperature of around 800K. Vaporization time scales of different fuels are found to be very different. The droplet diameter reduction and surface temperature rise were found to be strongly dependent on the fuel properties. Gasoline droplet exhibited a much faster vaporization due a combination of higher vapor pressure and smaller latent heat of vaporization compared to other fuels. Mono-dispersed spray was adopted with the expectation of achieving more homogeneous fuel droplet size than poly-dispersed spray. However, the diameter histogram in the zone near the pre-mixer exit shows a large range of droplet diameter distributions for all the fuels. In order to improve the vaporization performance, fuels were pre-heated before injection. Results show that the Sauter mean diameter of ethanol improved from 52.8% of the initial injection size to 48.2%, while jet-A improved from 48.4% to 18.6% and RME improved from 63.5% to 31.3%. The diameter histogram showed improved vaporization performance of jet-A. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
