I. THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF A NEW DIMER OF TRIPHENYLFLUOROCYCLOBUTADIENE

The crystal structure of thermal isomer of the “head-to-head” dimer of triphenylfluorocyclobutadiene was determined by the direct method. The Σ2 relationship involving the low angle reflections with the largest E’s were found and solved for the signs by the symbolic method of Zachariasen. The structure was seen in the electron density map and the E-map, and was refined antisotropically by the method of least squares. The residual R was 0.065.

The structure is a gem-difluorohexaphenyldihydropentalene. All of the phenyl groups are planar as it is the cyclopentadiene ring of the dihydropentalene skeleton. Overcrowding at the position of the flourines causes some deviations from the normal bond angles in the cyclopentene ring.

The list of observed and calculated structure factors on pages 32-34 will not be legible on the microfilm. Photographic copies may be obtained from the California Institute of Technology.

II. A LOW TEMPERATURE REFINEMENT OF THE CYANURIC TRIAZIDE STRUCTURE

The structure of cyanuric triazide was refined anisotropically by the method of least squares. Three-dimensional intensity data, which has been collected photographically with MoKα radiation at -110˚C, were used in the refinement. The residual R was reduced to 0.081.

The structure is completely planar, and there is no significant bond alternation in the cyanuric ring. The packing of the molecules causes the azide groups to deviate from linearity by 8 degrees.

Homoepitaxial ZnO films have been grown via liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) on (000 1) oriented ZnO substrates. X-ray rocking curve revealed the high quality of the ZnO films with a FWHM of 40 arc sec. Films of thickness about 20 gm were gown in the temperature range 700-720 degrees C. The growth rate of ZnO films was estimated to be 0.3 mu m h(-1). Atomic force microscope analysis showed that the surface roughness of ZnO films was very low, which further confirmed the high crystallinity of ZnO films. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) films were prepared on gamma-LiAlO2 substrates by radio frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering. The influence of substrate temperature (T-s) and nitrogen (N-2) concentration on film growth was investigated. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that highly c-axis oriented AlN films can be obtained in the temperature range from room temperature (RT) to 300 degrees C. A smoother surface and a crystalline quality decrease with increasing N-2 concentration have been observed by XRD and atomic force microscopy (AFM) for the films deposited at lower substrate temperature. On the contrary, the degradation of the surface smoothness and the higher crystalline quality can be observed for the films deposited at a higher substrate temperature with N-2-rich ambient. The growth mechanism which leads to different crystalline quality of the films is discussed. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

During the low temperature setting of fish paste, myosin heavy chain (MHC) is polymerized to cross-linked myosin heavy chain (CMHC), which is considered to occur by the action of endogenous transglutaminase (TGase). In this study the contribution of TGase on the setting of Alaska pollack surimi at different temperatures was studied. Alaska pollack surimi was ground with 3% NaCl, 30% h2o and with or without ethylene glycol bis (β-aminoethylether) N, N, N¹,N¹- tetra acetic acid (EGTA), an inhibitor of TGase. Among the pastes without EGTA, highest TGase activity was observed at 25°C but breaking force of the gel set at 25°C was lower than that set at 30°, 35°, and 40°C. Addition of EGTA (5m mol/kg) to the paste suppressed TGase activity at all setting temperatures from 20° to 40°C. Gelation of the pastes and cross-linking of MHC on addition of EGTA were suppressed completely at 20° and 25°C, partially at 30° and 35°C, and not at all at 40°C. The findings suggested that during the setting of Alaska pollack surimi TGase mediated cross-linking of MHC was strong at around 25°C but the thermal aggregation of MHC by non-covalent bonds was strong at above 35°C. Setting of surimi at 40°C and cross-linking of its MHC did not involve TGase.

We studied seasonal variation in the activity budget of a habituated group of Nomascus concolor jingdongensis at Mt. Wuliang, Central Yunnan, China from March 2005 to April 2006 via scan sampling at 5-min intervals. The study site is near the northern extreme of the distribution of hylobatids, at high altitude with extreme seasonality of temperature and rainfall. During the day, feeding manifested a bimodal pattern of high activity levels in mid-morning and mid-afternoon, whereas resting reached a peak at midday, with proportionally less time used for traveling. Annually, the group spent an average of 40.0% of the time resting, 35.1% feeding, 19.9% traveling, 2.6% singing, 1.2% playing, and 1.3% in other activities. The proportion of time allocated to activities showed significant monthly variations and was influenced by the diet and temperature. Gibbons increased traveling and playing time and decreased feeding time when they ate more fruit, and they decreased traveling, singing, and playing time and increased feeding time when they ate more leaves. Moreover, when the temperature was low, the gibbons decreased time traveling and increased time resting. In summary, black-crested gibbons employed high-effort activities when they ate more fruit and energy-conservation patterns when they ate more leaves and in low temperature. Behavioral data from the site are particularly useful in understanding gibbon behavioral adaptations to different sets of ecological conditions.

Quantitative microbeam Rutherford backscattering (RBS) analysis with a 1.5 MeV 4He+ beam has determined limits on the purity of copper deposited on glass with a novel inkjet process. A tetravinyl silane tetrakisCu(I) 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate (TVST[Cu]hfac) complex was heated to 70 °C and jetted onto the glass substrate through a piezoelectric ceramic print head in droplets about 0.5 mm diameter. The substrate temperature was 150 °C. Solid well-formed deposits resulted which have a copper content greater than about 90% by weight. The RBS spectra were analysed objectively using the DataFurnace code, with the assumption that the deposit was CuOx, and the validity of different assumed values of x being tested. The assumptions and the errors of the analysis are critically evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Two near-ultraviolet (UV) sensors based on solution-grown zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) which are only sensitive to photo-excitation at or below 400 nm wavelength have been fabricated and characterized. Both devices keep all processing steps, including nanowire growth, under 100 °C for compatibility with a wide variety of substrates. The first device type uses a single optical lithography step process to allow simultaneous in situ horizontal NW growth from solution and creation of symmetric ohmic contacts to the nanowires. The second device type uses a two-mask optical lithography process to create asymmetric ohmic and Schottky contacts. For the symmetric ohmic contacts, at a voltage bias of 1 V across the device, we observed a 29-fold increase in current in comparison to dark current when the NWs were photo-excited by a 400 nm light-emitting diode (LED) at 0.15 mW cm(-2) with a relaxation time constant (τ) ranging from 50 to 555 s. For the asymmetric ohmic and Schottky contacts under 400 nm excitation, τ is measured between 0.5 and 1.4 s over varying time internals, which is ~2 orders of magnitude faster than the devices using symmetric ohmic contacts.

The conversion of silver nanoparticle (NP) paste films into highly conductive films at low sintering temperature is an important requirement for the developing areas of additive fabrication and printed electronics. Ag NPs with a diameter of ∼10 nm were prepared via an improved chemical process to produce viscous paste with a high wt%. The paste consisted of as-prepared Ag NP and an organic vehicle of ethylcellulose that was deposited on glass and Si substrates using a contact lithographic technique. The morphology and conductivity of the imprinted paste film were measured as a function of sintering temperature, sintering time and the percentage ratio of Ag NP and ethylcellulose. The morphology and conductivity were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a two-point probe electrical conductivity measurement. The results show that the imprinted films were efficiently converted into conducting states when exposed to sintering temperature in the range of 200-240 °C, this temperature is lower than the previously reported values for Ag paste. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, high and low speed tip flows are investigated for a high-pressure turbine blade. Previous experimental data are used to validate a CFD code, which is then used to study the tip heat transfer in high and low speed cascades. The results show that at engine representative Mach numbers the tip flow is predominantly transonic. Thus, compared to the low speed tip flow, the heat transfer is affected by reductions in both the heat transfer coefficient and the recovery temperature. The high Mach numbers in the tip region (M>1.5) lead to large local variations in recovery temperature. Significant changes in the heat transfer coefficient are also observed. These are due to changes in the structure of the tip flow at high speed. At high speeds, the pressure side corner separation bubble reattachment occurs through supersonic acceleration which halves the length of the bubble when the tip gap exit Mach number is increased from 0.1 to 1.0. In addition, shock/boundary-layer interactions within the tip gap lead to large changes in the tip boundary-layer thickness. These effects give rise to significant differences in the heat-transfer coefficient within the tip region compared to the low-speed tip flow. Compared to the low speed tip flow, the high speed tip flow is much less dominated by turbulent dissipation and is thus less sensitive to the choice of turbulence model. These results clearly demonstrate that blade tip heat transfer is a strong function of Mach number, an important implication when considering the use of low speed experimental testing and associated CFD validation in engine blade tip design.
