The revolution in the foundations of physics at the beginning of the twentieth century suggested to several of its most prominent workers that biology was ripe for something similar. In consequence, a number of physicists moved into biology. They were highly influential in initiating a molecular biology in the 1950s. Two decades later it seemed to several of these migrants, and those they had influenced, that the major problems in molecular biology had been solved, and that it was time to move on to what seemed to them the final problem: the nervous system, consciousness, and the age-old mind-body problem. This paper reviews this "double migration" and shows how the hopes of the first generation of physicist-biologists were both realized and dashed. No new physical principles were discovered at work in the foundations of biology or neuroscience. On the other hand, the mind-set of those trained in physics proved immensely valuable in analyzing fundamental issues in both biology and neuroscience. It has been argued that the outcome of the molecular biology of the 1950s was a change in the concept of the gene from that of "a mysterious entity into that of a real molecular object" (Watson, 1965, p.6); the gates and channels which play such crucial roles in the functioning of nervous systems have been transformed in a similar way. Studies on highly simplified systems have also opened the prospect of finding the neural correlatives of numerous behaviors and neuropathologies. This increasing understanding at the molecular level is invaluable not only in devising rational therapies but also, by defining the material substrate of consciousness, in bringing the mind-body problem into sharper focus. Accounts of Tamil long-distance nationalism have focused on Sri Lankan Tamil migrants. But the UK is also home to Tamils of non-Sri Lankan state origins. While these migrants may be nominally incorporated into a 'Tamil diaspora', they are seldom present in scholarly accounts. Framed by Werbner's (2002) conception of diasporas as 'aesthetic' and 'moral' communities, this article explores whether engagement with a Tamil diaspora and long-distance nationalism is expressed by Tamil migrants of diverse state origins. While migrants identify with an aesthetic community, 'membership' of the moral community is contested between those who hold direct experience of suffering as central to belonging, and those who imagine the boundaries of belonging more fluidly - based upon primordial understandings of essential ethnicity and a narrative of Tamil 'victimhood' that incorporates experiences of being Tamil in Sri Lanka, India and in other sites, despite obvious differences in these experiences. © 2013 Taylor & Francis.

This chapter employs Pnina Werbner's notion of diasporas as moral communities of suffering and co-responsibility, as well as aesthetic communities of shared transnational consumption of culture and performance of ritual, and relates this to the case of Tamil migrants of diverse state origins in Britain. Sri Lankan Tamil migrants I interviewed towards my research imagine membership of a Tamil diaspora as based on personal (or familial) experiences of suffering in the Sri Lankan civil war, which acts both to create bonds with other Sri Lankan Tamils, and to distinguish from Tamils of other state origins (Indian, Singaporean etc.) despite cultural commonalities (Werbner's aesthetic diaspora). Conversely, many of the non-Sri Lankan Tamil migrants I interviewed imagined these boundaries in more flexible terms, and claimed membership of the 'community of suffering' in ways which did not necessitate personal experience, but rather privileged symbolic constructions of the ethnic community, and an interpretation of historical and current events in India, Sri Lanka (and other sites of Tamil population) as components of a single narrative of Tamil victimhood.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of the origins and journey of the fundamental ideas underpinning Michael Porter’s The Competitive Advantage of Nations as a means of assessing its influence. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on a reflection of the book’s text and associated works by Porter, the paper shows how Porter’s thinking evolved from his earlier writings, as well as how his ideas went through further periods of development following the publication of The Competitive Advantage of Nations. Findings – The paper focuses on the emergence of Porter’s cluster theory and his growing acknowledgement of the role of innovation within processes of economic development. It shows how these concepts have provided a foundation for contemporary economic development practices. Also, the paper highlights how the fundamental concepts of Porter’s text have shifted from a unit of analysis focused on nations to one where subnational regions are the primary analytical unit. Originality/value – The paper concludes by suggesting that the nature of Porter’s conceptual insights is likely to ensure the long-term endurance of the fundamental lessons contained within The Competitive Advantage of Nations.

A tanulmány a japán vállalatvezetés kialakulásával, történelmi és társadalmi gyökereivel, valamint intézményesülésének vizsgálatával foglalkozik. Első részében a szerző áttekinti, milyen főbb földrajzi és történelmi tényezők, körülmények játszottak szerepet a japán vezetési gyakorlat formálódásában. Ezt követően egy meghatározott történelmi idősíkon követi nyomon az amerikai menedzsmenttörténet egyes korszakainak megfelelő japán változásokat, vállalatvezetési reakciókat – kezdve a klasszikus menedzsment tanaitól (taylorizmus, racionalizálás...) egészen a mai kor globális versenye által támasztott követelményekig. Rámutat arra, mikor és miért késtek fontos váltások Japánban a vállalatvezetésben élenjáró Amerikához képest, majd értékeli ennek elméleti és gyakorlati jelentőségét. Szándéka szerint ez a történelmi áttekintés képez alapot napjaink Japánnal kapcsolatos gazdasági-társadalmi eseményeinek, reformjainak értékeléséhez is. ____ This paper describes the development, the roots and the process of institutionalization of corporate management in Japan. In the first half the author will look at what major geographical factors and cultural characteristics could play a role in shaping the Japanese management practices. Then, along a historical time line, he scrolls through the Japanese reactions given to each of the major American historical eras: from the classical management (Taylorism, rationalization...) up to the challenges of today’s global competition. It is pointed out where paradigm shifts were delayed compared to the US, and while providing potential reasons, the author evaluates the significance of the differences. This historical comparison ought to provide a basis and scope of understanding for today’s events and ongoing reforms in Japan.

In this thesis I sought to explain the origins of national security concerns over foreign investments in the United States from 1919 to 2008. I identified and examined 29 cases of national security concerns over foreign investments in the United States during that period, and argued that in order to understand the circumstances under which foreign investments in the United States are perceived to be threats to the U.S. security we must rely on a combination of democratic peace theory and the version of political realism known as power transition theory. Thus, I tested the argument that national security concerns over foreign investments in the United States from 1919 to 2008 resulted from: (1) perceptions of international power transition, (2) perceptions of ideological and institutional differences between the United States and the home country of the investor, (3) perceptions of the strategic importance of the sector where the investment is made, and (4) perceptions of participation or control of the foreign investor by the government of the country of origin. I found that all these hypotheses have some explanatory power.

Coral diseases were unknown in the scientific community fifty years ago. Since the discovery of a coral disease in 1965, there has been an exponential increase in the number of known coral diseases, as the abundance, prevalence, distribution, and number of host species affected has also significantly increased. Coral diseases are recognized as contributing significantly to the dramatic losses of coral cover on a global basis, particularly in the Caribbean. The apparent sudden emergence of coral diseases suggests that they may be a symptom of an overall trend associated with changing environmental conditions. However, not much evidence has been gathered to address this question. The following studies were designed to build a comprehensive argument to support this hypothesis for one important coral disease—black band disease (BBD). A meta-analysis of clone libraries identifying the microbial communities associated with BBD reveal important information including that a single cyanobacterial operational taxonomic unit (OTU) was by far the most prevalent OTU in diseased samples, and that the alphaproteobacteria, which include some of the most common bacteria in marine waters, were the most diversely represented. The analysis also showed that samples exhibited regional similarities. An fine and ultrastructural characterization of the disease revealed that the cyanobacteria are prolific borers through the coral skeleton, and that the cyanobacteria penetrate coral tissue, leading to their presence ahead of the main migrating disease band. It was further found that apparently healthy corals exposed to toxins found in BBD, exhibited similar tissue degradation to those infected with BBD. Comparing the disease progression to biofilm formation, it was determined that scouting cyanobacteria may contribute to the migration of the disease through progressive biofilm development over intact coral tissue. Together, these studies provide significant evidence for the hypothesis that BBD is an opportunistic disease, caused by common environmental bacteria, facilitated by the changing environmental conditions associated with climate change.
