Matings systems using signals for sexual communication have been studied extensively and results commonly suggest that females use these signals for locating males, species-identification, and mate choice. Although numerous mating systems employ multiple signals, research has generally focused on long-range signals perhaps due to their prominence and ease of study. This study focused on the short-range acoustic courtship song of crickets. The results presented here suggest this signal is under selection by female choice. Females mated preferentially with males having shorter silences between the two types of ticks within the song. The length of these silences (Gap 1) was correlated with male condition such that males having long silences were significantly lower in mass with respect to body size when compared to males having short silences. Both Gap 1 length and male condition were significantly repeatable within males over time suggesting the possibility these traits have a genetic basis. This study is the first empirical study to test female preferences within the natural variation of the courtship song. It now appears, at least in crickets, that both the longand short-range signals of a multi-signal mating system may contribute to male mating success.

The reproductive behaviour of the field cricket, Gryllus integer, was systematically observed in indoor arenas to determine the extent of female Choice and male-male competition at different sex ratios representing two male densities (12:6 and 6:6). The costs and benefits to males and females in those two densities were analyzed according to the theory of the evolution o£ leks. Observations were conducted during the dark hours when most calling occurred since hourly rates of courtship song and mating did not fluctuate significantly over a 24 h period. Female mating rates were not significantly different between densities, therefore males at high densities were not advantaged because of increased female tendencies to mate when social stimulation was increased. Mean rates of acoustical signalling (calling and courtin"g) did not differ significantly between densities. Mean rates of fighting by males at the high density were significantly greater than those of males at the low density. Mating benefits associated with callin~courting and fighting were measured. Mating rates did not vary with rates of calling at either density. Calling was not a prerequisite to mating. Courtship song preceded all matings. There was a significant power fit between male mating and courting rates, and male mating and fighting rates at the low, but not at the high, density. Density differences in the benefits associated with increased courting and fighting may relate, in part, to greater economic defensibility and monopoly of females due to reduced male competition at the low density. Dominant males may be preferentially chosen by females or better able to monopolize mating opportunities than subordinate males. Three criteria were used to determine whether dominant males were preferentially chosen by females. The number of matings by males who won fights (within 30 min of mating) was significantly greater than the number of matings by males who were defeated in such fights. Mating rates did not vary significantly with rates of winning at either density. There was a significant power fit between male mating rates and the percentage of fights a male won (irrespective of his fighting-frequency) at the low density. The mean duration a male guarded the female after mating did not vary significantly between densities. There was a significant linear relationship between the duration a spermatophore was retained and the duration a male guarded the female after mating. Courtship song apparently stimulated spermatophore removal. Male guarding involved inter-male aggression and reduced courtship attempts by other males. Males at the high density received no apparent reproductive benefits associated with increased social stimulation. Conclusive evidence for preferential choice of males by females, using the criteria examined here, is lacking. Males at the lower density had fewer competitors and could monopolize females more effectively.

The objective of this investigation was to clarify the adaptive significance of female sexual behaviours in the house cricket, Acheta domesticus, and the Texas field cricket, Gryllus integer. Experiments were focussed primarily on: nutritional factors affecting female reproductive success; the ontogeny of female sexual behaviours; female mating frequency and progeny production; and the pattern of sperm competition. Reproduction of singly mated female A. domesticus assigned to 3 nutritional regimes was compared . Females fed a vitamin and protein-enriched mouse chow, cannibalistic females, and starved females produced on the average, 513 , 200 and 68 offspring, respectively. Cannibals probably could not obtain the same amounts of essential nutrients as females fed mouse chow. Reabsorption of oocytes was likely the major factor contributing to the decreased reproduction of starved females. In addition, female !. domesticus fed mouse chow, but allowed constant access to males produced 11 times as many offspring than did females fed corn meal. Females fed corn meal probably could not absorb or synthesize enough dietary lipids, thus resulting in poor ovariole growth. Female !. domesticus first mate at an average adult age of 7 days, closely corresponding to when they first exhibit positive phonotaxis. Females mate repeatedly and often consume the externally attached spermatophore. In ~. domesticus, females allowed constant access to males produced significantly more offspring than did single maters. Similarly, doubly mated G. integer females produced more offspring than did single maters. This difference resulted largely from the failure of many single maters to reproduce. Remating by female crickets partly functions in offsetting the possibility of a failed initial mating. Nymph production increased significantly with the time the spermatophore was attached in singly mated ~. domesticus. Spermatophore consumption by the female was not affected by male guarding behaviour, and the interval between mating and eating of the spermatophore may often be shorter than the time required for maximum insemination. Some degree of sperm depletion in singly mated !. domesticus and G. integer may have occurred. The patterns of daily offspring production of singly and multiplymated females suggests that a factor provided by a male during mating stimulates female oviposition and/or egg production. Female crickets also might acquire nutrition from spermatophore consumption, a benefit that is augmented by female multiple mating. The electrophoretic examination of various allozymes in ~. integer did not permit determination of a pattern of sperm competition. However, the possibility of last male sperm predominance is related to male guarding behaviour.

Sperm competition is the competition for fertilizations between ejaculates, within a female, following multiple mating. There are four sperm utilization or precedence patterns: first male precedence, where the first male to mate fertilizes most of the eggs laid by a female; last male precedence, where the last male to mate fertilizes most of the eggs laid by a female; "all-or-none" pattern, where sperm from either male fertilizes all the eggs laid by a female but which male's sperm that is used is random; or sperm mixing, where sperm from each male is used equally in fertilizing eggs laid by a female. Intermediate utilization patterns are also possible. Sperm competition occurs in a wide variety of insect species as well as other animals. This study was undertaken to study sperm competition in the field cricket, Gryllus integer. Four experiments were conducted: a radiation and sterilization experiment, a diapause experiment, and 2 competition experiments. It was found that 7,000 rad of gamma radiation sterilized adult ~ integer males. There was no diapause in the laboratory in ~ integer eggs. In the first competition experiment, three groups of females were used: females mated with a normal male, then with a second normal male (NN group); females mated with a normal male, and then with a sterile male (NR group); and females mated with a sterile male, and then with a normal male (RN group). The results obtained from this experiment showed that the mean proportion of eggs hatched was significantly different between 3 groups of females, with the proportion hatched much greater in the NN group than in either the NR or RN groups. The pattern for the proportion of eggs hatched following a double mating most closely resembled a pattern expected if sperm mixing is occurring. Results obtained in the replicate competition experiment showed that the mean proportion of eggs hatched for the females in the NR group was significantly lower than the proportion hatched in the other two groups. This also supports a model of sperm mixing as a precedence pattern. Values calculated following Boorman and Parker (1976), for the proportion of eggs fertilized by the second male to mate following a double mating, were 0.57 in competition experiment 1 and 0.62 in the replicate. These values indicate that sperm mixing occurs in~ integer.

The relationship between testosterone concentrations and aggressive behaviour in studies of people has produced very inconsistent findings. However, one consistent fmding that has emerged is that competitive and aggressive interactions potentiate testosterone release in both human and non-human species. It has been argued that socially-induced alterations in testosterone concentrations may function to influence ongoing and/or future social behaviour. Nonetheless, few studies have empirically tested this hypothesis. The current series of experiments was designed to address the extent to which competitioninduced fluctuations in testosterone concentrations were associated with ongoing and/or subsequent social behaviour. In Study 1, men (n = 38) provided saliva samples prior to, and at the conclusion of, the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PSAP). Although baseline testosterone concentrations were not related to aggressive behaviour, there was a positive correlation between change in testosterone and aggressive behaviour such that men who were most aggressive on the PSAP demonstrated the largest increase in testosterone concentrations. Furthermore, a rise in testosterone during the PSAP predicted willingness to choose a subsequent competitive task. In Study 2, men and women provided saliva samples prior to and after competing against a same-sex opponent on the Number Tracing Task (NTT). The outcome of the competition was rigged such that half of the individuals won most of the races, while the other half lost most of the races, thus experimentally creating a winner and loser in the laboratory. Following the competitive interaction, men and women played the PSAP with their same-sex partner. Results indicated that men selected the aggressive response (but not reward or protection responses), more frequently than women. For men assigned to the loss condition, an increase in testosterone concentrations in response to the NTT predicted subsequent aggressive behaviour. For men assigned to the win condition, an increase in testosterone concentrations in response to the NTT predicted subsequent aggressive behaviour, but only among those men who scored high on trait dominance. Change in testosterone and trait dominance did not predict aggressive behaviour in women. In Study 3, men provided saliva samples prior to, during, and at the end of the PSAP. They were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions that differed in the extent to which they were provoked and whether they received reward for behaving aggressively (i.e., stealing points). Results indicated that baseline testosterone concentrations did not correlate with aggression in any of the experimental conditions. Consistent with Study 1, there was a positive correlation between change in testosterone and aggressive behaviour among men who were provoked, but did not receive reward for aggression (i.e., reactive condition). Men who were provoked but did not receive reward for aggression enjoyed the task the most and were more likely to choose the competitive versus non-competitive task relative to men assigned to the other experimental conditions. Also, individual differences in aggressive behaviour among these men were positively correlated with the extent to which they enjoyed the task. Together, these studies indicate that testosterone dynamics within the context of competition influence subsequent competitive and aggressive behaviours in humans and that testosterone may be a marker of the intrinsically rewarding nature of costly aggressive behaviour.

Given the significant growth of the Internet in recent years, marketers have been striving for new techniques and strategies to prosper in the online world. Statistically, search engines have been the most dominant channels of Internet marketing in recent years. However, the mechanics of advertising in such a market place has created a challenging environment for marketers to position their ads among their competitors. This study uses a unique cross-sectional dataset of the top 500 Internet retailers in North America and hierarchical multiple regression analysis to empirically investigate the effect of keyword competition on the relationship between ad position and its determinants in the sponsored search market. To this end, the study utilizes the literature in consumer search behavior, keyword auction mechanism design, and search advertising performance as the theoretical foundation. This study is the first of its kind to examine the sponsored search market characteristics in a cross-sectional setting where the level of keyword competition is explicitly captured in terms of the number of Internet retailers competing for similar keywords. Internet retailing provides an appropriate setting for this study given the high-stake battle for market share and intense competition for keywords in the sponsored search market place. The findings of this study indicate that bid values and ad relevancy metrics as well as their interaction affect the position of ads on the search engine result pages (SERPs). These results confirm some of the findings from previous studies that examined sponsored search advertising performance at a keyword level. Furthermore, the study finds that the position of ads for web-only retailers is dependent on bid values and ad relevancy metrics, whereas, multi-channel retailers are more reliant on their bid values. This difference between web-only and multi-channel retailers is also observed in the moderating effect of keyword competition on the relationships between ad position and its key determinants. Specifically, this study finds that keyword competition has significant moderating effects only for multi-channel retailers.

This study examined changes in the salivary concentrations of immunoglobulin A (sIgA), cortisol (sC), testosterone (sT) and testosterone-to-cortisol ratio (T/C) in 23 competitive swimmers, 11-15 years old, during a week leading to competition as compared to a control (non-competitive) week. Results showed no effect of week or day, and no significant week-by-day interaction for sIgA, sC and T/C. In contrast, sT significantly decreased during the week of competition, along with a 7%, non-significant decrease in the weekly T/C. The latter suggests that the swimmers were in a catabolic state due to their training, but this did not have a negative effect on their performance Since sC did not change over the two weeks and according to the sport anxiety scale, competition stress was relatively low in these peri-pubertal athletes, it is concluded that in the absence of high cortisol levels mucosal immunity is unaffected in young athletes prior to competition.

Past research on this association has been focused primarily on the link between video game violence and aggression; however, this research has confounded the effect of video game violence versus competition on aggression. The main goal of the current dissertation, therefore, was to examine the short- and long-term associations between competitive video game play and aggression. In addition, the longitudinal work on this association to date has been limited to adolescent samples, but not young adults. Thus, the second goal of the dissertation research was to investigate whether video game play predicts aggression in the long-term among young adults in addition to adolescents. To address these goals, three studies were conducted. Study 1 consisted of a series of experiments examining the short-term effect of video game violence versus competition on aggression. Study 2 examined the long-term association between competitive video game play and aggression among adolescents, and Study 3 examined this long-term link among young adults, in addition to adolescents. Taken together, the results of the three dissertation studies converged to suggest that video game competition, rather than violence, may be a stronger predictor of aggression in both the short- and long-term. Les changements évolutifs nous instruisent sur les nombreuses innovations permettant à chaque organisme de maximiser ses aptitudes en choisissant le partenaire approprié, telles que les caractéristiques sexuelles secondaires, les patrons comportementaux, les attractifs chimiques et les mécanismes sensoriels y répondant. L'haploïde de la levure Saccharomyces cerevisiae distingue son partenaire en interprétant le gradient de la concentration d'une phéromone sécrétée par les partenaires potentiels grâce à un réseau de protéines signalétiques de type kinase activées par la mitose (MAPK). La décision de la liaison sexuelle chez la levure est un événement en "tout–ourien", à la manière d'un interrupteur. Les cellules haploïdes choisissent leur partenaire sexuel en fonction de la concentration de phéromones qu’il produit. Seul le partenaire à proximité sécrétant des concentrations de phéromones égales ou supérieures à une concentration critique est retenu. Les faibles signaux de phéromones sont attribués à des partenaires pouvant mener à des accouplements infructueux. Notre compréhension du mécanisme moléculaire contrôlant cet interrupteur de la décision d'accouplement reste encore mince. Dans le cadre de la présente thèse, je démontre que le mécanisme de décision de la liaison sexuelle provient de la compétition pour le contrôle de l'état de phosphorylation de quatre sites sur la protéine d'échafaudage Ste5, entre la MAPK, Fus3, et la phosphatase,Ptc1. Cette compétition résulte en la dissociation de type « intérupteur » entre Fus3 et Ste5, nécessaire à la prise de décision d'accouplement en "tout-ou-rien". Ainsi, la décision de la liaison sexuelle s'effectue à une étape précoce de la voie de réponse aux phéromones et se produit rapidement, peut-être dans le but de prévenir la perte d’un partenaire potentiel. Nous argumentons que l'architecture du circuit Fus3-Ste5-Ptc1 génère un mécanisme inédit d'ultrasensibilité, ressemblant à "l'ultrasensibilité d'ordre zéro", qui résiste aux variations de concentration de ces protéines. Cette robustesse assure que l'accouplement puisse se produire en dépit de la stochasticité cellulaire ou de variations génétiques entre individus.Je démontre, par la suite, qu'un évènement précoce en réponse aux signaux extracellulaires recrutant Ste5 à la membrane plasmique est également ultrasensible à l'augmentation de la concentration de phéromones et que cette ultrasensibilité est engendrée par la déphosphorylation de huit phosphosites en N-terminal sur Ste5 par la phosphatase Ptc1 lorsqu'elle est associée à Ste5 via la protéine polarisante, Bem1. L'interférence dans ce mécanisme provoque une perte de l'ultrasensibilité et réduit, du même coup, l'amplitude et la fidélité de la voie de réponse aux phéromones à la stimulation. Ces changements se reflètent en une réduction de la fidélité et de la précision de la morphologie attribuable à la réponse d'accouplement. La polarisation dans l'assemblage du complexe protéique à la surface de la membrane plasmique est un thème général persistant dans tous les organismes, de la bactérie à l'humain. Un tel complexe est en mesure d'accroître l'efficacité, la fidélité et la spécificité de la transmission du signal. L'ensemble de nos découvertes démontre que l'ultrasensibilité, la précision et la robustesse de la réponse aux phéromones découlent de la régulation de la phosphorylation stoichiométrique de deux groupes de phosphosites sur Ste5, par la phosphatase Ptc1, un groupe effectuant le recrutement ultrasensible de Ste5 à la membrane et un autre incitant la dissociation et l'activation ultrasensible de la MAPK terminal Fus3. Le rôle modulateur de Ste5 dans la décision de la destinée cellulaire étend le répertoire fonctionnel des protéines d'échafaudage bien au-delà de l'accessoire dans la spécificité et l'efficacité des traitements de l'information. La régulation de la dynamique des caractères signal-réponse à travers une telle régulation modulaire des groupes de phosphosites sur des protéines d'échafaudage combinées à l'assemblage à la membrane peut être un moyen général par lequel la polarisation du destin cellulaire est obtenue. Des mécanismes similaires peuvent contrôler les décisions cellulaires dans les organismes complexes et peuvent être compromis dans des dérèglements cellulaires, tel que le cancer. Finalement, sur un thème relié, je présente la découverte d'un nouveau mécanisme où le seuil de la concentration de phéromones est contrôlé par une voie sensorielle de nutriments, ajustant, de cette manière, le point prédéterminé dans lequel la quantité et la qualité des nutriments accessibles dans l'environnement déterminent le seuil à partir duquel la levure s'accouple. La sous-unité régulatrice de la kinase à protéine A (PKA),Bcy1, une composante clé du réseau signalétique du senseur aux nutriments, interagit directement avec la sous-unité α des petites protéines G, Gpa1, le premier effecteur dans le réseau de réponse aux phéromones. L'interaction Bcy1-Gpa1 est accrue lorsque la cellule croit en présence d'un sucre idéal, le glucose, diminuant la concentration seuil auquel la décision d'accouplement est activée. Compromettre l'interaction Bcy1-Gpa1 ou inactiver Bcy1 accroît la concentration seuil nécessaire à une réponse aux phéromones. Nous argumentons qu'en ajustant leur sensibilité, les levures peuvent intégrer le stimulus provenant des phéromones au niveau du glucose extracellulaire, priorisant la décision de survie dans un milieu pauvre ou continuer leur cycle sexuel en choisissant un accouplement.
