Atopic dermatitis in humans and dogs is a chronic relapsing allergic skin disease. Dogs show a spontaneous disease similar to the human counterpart and represent a model to improve our understanding of the immunological mechanisms, the pathogenesis of the disease, and new therapy development. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency and phenotype of dendritic cells (DC) in the epidermis and dermis of healthy, canine atopic dermatitis lesional, and non-allergic inflammatory skin to further validate the model and to obtain insights into the contribution of DC to the pathogenesis of skin diseases in dogs. We first characterized canine skin DC using flow-cytometric analysis of isolated skin DC combined with an immunohistochemical approach. A major population of canine skin dendritic cells was identified as CD1c(+)CD11c(+)CD14(-)CD80(+)MHCII(+)MAC387(-) cells, with dermal DC but not Langerhans cells expressing CD11b. In the epidermis of lesional canine atopic dermatitis and non-allergic inflammatory skin, we found significantly more dendritic cells compared with nonlesional and control skin. Only in canine atopic dermatitis skin did we find a subset of dendritic cells positive for IgE, in the epidermis and the dermis. Under all inflammatory conditions, dermal dendritic cells expressed more CD14 and CD206. MAC387(+) putative macrophages were absent in healthy but present in inflamed skin, in particular during non-allergic diseases. This study permits a phenotypic identification and differentiation of canine skin dendritic cells and has identified markers and changes in dendritic cells and macrophage populations related to allergic and non-allergic inflammatory conditions. Our data suggest the participation of dendritic cells in the pathogenesis of canine atopic dermatitis similar to human atopic dermatitis and further validate the only non-murine spontaneous animal model for this disease.

The blending of common polymers allows for the rapid and facile synthesis of new materials with highly tunable properties at a fraction of the costs of new monomer development and synthesis. Most blends of polymers, however, are completely immiscible and separate into distinct phases with minimal phase interaction, severelydegrading the performance of the material. Cross-phase interactions and property enhancement can be achieved with these blends through reactive processing or compatibilizer addition. A new class of blend compatibilization relies on the mechanochemical reactions between polymer chains via solid-state, high energy processing. Two contrasting mechanochemical processing techniques are explored in this thesis: cryogenic milling and solid-state shear pulverization (SSSP). Cryogenic milling is a batch process where a milling rod rapidly impacts the blend sample while submerged within a bath of liquid nitrogen. In contrast, SSSP is a continuous process where blend components are subjected to high shear and compressive forces while progressing down a chilled twin-screw barrel. In the cryogenic milling study, through the application of a synthesized labeledpolymer, in situ formation of copolymers was observed for the first time. The microstructures of polystyrene/high-density polyethylene (PS/HDPE) blends fabricated via cryomilling followed by intimate melt-state mixing and static annealing were found to be morphologically stable over time. PS/HDPE blends fabricated via SSSP also showed compatibilization by way of ideal blend morphology through growth mechanisms with slightly different behavior compared to the cryomilled blends. The new Bucknell University SSSP instrument was carefully analyzed and optimized to produce compatibilized polymer blends through a full-factorial experiment. The city of Bath is a World Heritage site and its thermal waters, the Roman Baths and new spa development rely on undisturbed flow of the springs (45 °C). The current investigations provide an improved understanding of the residence times and flow regime as basis for the source protection. Trace gas indicators including the noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton and xenon) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), together with a more comprehensive examination of chemical and stable isotope tracers are used to characterise the sources of the thermal water and any modern components. It is shown conclusively by the use of 39Ar that the bulk of the thermal water has been in circulation within the Carboniferous Limestone for at least 1000 years. Other stable isotope and noble gas measurements confirm previous findings and strongly suggest recharge within the Holocene time period (i.e. the last 12 kyr). Measurements of dissolved 85Kr and chlorofluorocarbons constrain previous indications from tritium that a small proportion (<5%) of the thermal water originates from modern leakage into the spring pipe passing through Mesozoic valley fill underlying Bath. This introduces small amounts of O2 into the system, resulting in the Fe precipitation seen in the King’s Spring. Silica geothermometry indicates that the water is likely to have reached a maximum temperature of between 69–99 °C, indicating a most probable maximum circulation depth of ∼3 km, which is in line with recent geological models. The rise to the surface of the water is sufficiently indirect that a temperature loss of >20 °C is incurred. There is overwhelming evidence that the water has evolved within the Carboniferous Limestone formation, although the chemistry alone cannot pinpoint the geometry of the recharge area or circulation route. For a likely residence time of 1–12 kyr, volumetric calculations imply a large storage volume and circulation pathway if typical porosities of the limestone at depth are used, indicating that much of the Bath-Bristol basin must be involved in the water storage.

The purpose of this article is to extend the organizational development diagnostics repertoire by advancing an approach that surfaces organizational identity beliefs through the elicitation of complex, multimodal metaphors by organizational members. We illustrate the use of such "Type IV" metaphors in a postmerger context, in which individuals sought to make sense of the implications of the merger process for the identity of their organization. This approach contributes to both constructive and discursive new organizational development approaches; and offers a multimodal way of researching organizational identity that goes beyond the dominant, mainly textual modality.

Augmented reality (AR) is been increasingly used in mobile devices. Most of the available applications are set to work outdoors, mainly due to the availability of a reliable positioning system. Nevertheless, indoor (smart) spaces offer a lot of opportunities of creating new service concepts. In particular, in this paper we explore the applicability of mobile AR to hospitality environments (hotels and similar establishments). From the state-of-the-art of technologies and applications, a portfolio of services has been identified and a prototype using off-the-shelf technologies has been designed. Our objective is to identify the next technological challenges to overcome in order to have suitable underlying infrastructures and innovative services which enhance the traveller?s experience.

In arid countries worldwide, social conflicts between irrigation-based human development and the conservation of aquatic ecosystems are widespread and attract many public debates. This research focuses on the analysis of water and agricultural policies aimed at conserving groundwater resources and maintaining rurallivelihoods in a basin in Spain's central arid region. Intensive groundwater mining for irrigation has caused overexploitation of the basin's large aquifer, the degradation of reputed wetlands and has given rise to notable social conflicts over the years. With the aim of tackling the multifaceted socio-ecological interactions of complex water systems, the methodology used in this study consists in a novel integration into a common platform of an economic optimization model and a hydrology model WEAP (Water Evaluation And Planning system). This robust tool is used to analyze the spatial and temporal effects of different water and agricultural policies under different climate scenarios. It permits the prediction of different climate and policy outcomes across farm types (water stress impacts and adaptation), at basin's level (aquifer recovery), and along the policies’ implementation horizon (short and long run). Results show that the region's current quota-based water policies may contribute to reduce water consumption in the farms but will not be able to recover the aquifer and will inflict income losses to the rural communities. This situation would worsen in case of drought. Economies of scale and technology are evidenced as larger farms with cropping diversification and those equipped with modern irrigation will better adapt to water stress conditions. However, the long-term sustainability of the aquifer and the maintenance of rurallivelihoods will be attained only if additional policy measures are put in place such as the control of illegal abstractions and the establishing of a water bank. Within the policy domain, the research contributes to the new sustainable development strategy of the EU by concluding that, in water-scarce regions, effective integration of water and agricultural policies is essential for achieving the water protection objectives of the EU policies. Therefore, the design and enforcement of well-balanced region-specific polices is a major task faced by policy makers for achieving successful water management that will ensure nature protection and human development at tolerable social costs. From a methodological perspective, this research initiative contributes to better address hydrological questions as well as economic and social issues in complex water and human systems. Its integrated vision provides a valuable illustration to inform water policy and management decisions within contexts of water-related conflicts worldwide.

Descripción y evaluación de sistema de estimulación cognitiva a través de la TDT orientada a personas con enfermedad de Parkinson, con supervisión por parte de sus terapeutas de forma remota. Abstract: This paper details the full design, implementation, and validation of an e-health service in order to improve the community health care services for patients with cognitive disorders. Specifically, the new service allows Parkinson’s disease patients benefit from the possibility of doing cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) at home by using a familiar device such as a TV set. Its use instead of a PC could be a major advantage for some patients whose lack of familiarity with the use of a PC means that they can do therapy only in the presence of a therapist. For these patients this solution could bring about a great improvement in their autonomy. At the same time, this service provides therapists with the ability to conduct follow-up of therapy sessions via the web,benefiting from greater and easier control of the therapy exercises performed by patients and allowing them to customize new exercises in accordance with the particular needs of each patient. As a result, this kind of CST is considered to be a complement of other therapies oriented to the Parkinson patients. Furthermore, with small changes, the system could be useful for patients with a different cognitive disease such as Alzheimer’s or mild cognitive impairment.

La aproximación de las organizaciones a la mejora de sus procesos ha venido por distintos caminos. Muchas Administraciones Públicas se acercaron a este universo a través del modelo EFQM de calidad y excelencia que surgió en la década de los 80 y que sirvió como referente en el ámbito de la Unión Europea como vía de autoevaluación y determinación de procesos de mejora continua. Está basado en la identificación de los puntos fuertes y débiles aplicados a diferentes ámbitos de la organización, siendo éstos el punto de partida para el proceso de mejora continua. Se trata de un modelo en el que puedes decir que estás en calidad aunque tu puntuación sea muy pequeña, por lo que, por imagen, muchas empresas públicas empezaron a implantarlo. La empresa privada sin embargo se decantó por los sistemas de calidad basados en normas ISO. En estos sistemas has de tener un nivel mínimo para poder exhibir una certificación o acreditación del sistema de calidad. La más extendida es la ISO 9001:2008 ya que es válida para todo tipo de empresa. Este sistema se centra en la satisfacción del cliente y está basada en gran medida en el PDCA, acrónimo de Plan, Do, Check, Act (Planificar, Hacer, Verificar y Actuar). Al tratarse de sistemas documentados, pasados los años se llega a la misma conclusión, aquellas empresas que simplemente tienen un certificado colgado en la pared y que arreglan los papeles antes de la auditoría no tienen nada que aporte valor añadido a la empresa y se autoengañan. La potencia de todo sistema de gestión de calidad reside en aprovechar el potencial de sus recursos humanos dirigiendo los recursos de la empresa de forma eficiente y haciendo participe de los objetivos de la organización a su personal para que se impliquen y sepan que se espera de cada uno. La formación de ingeniero siempre nos hace ser críticos con los modelos existentes y tratar de buscar caminos alternativos que sean más eficientes. Para ello es necesario tener un conocimiento muy preciso de la organización. Por ello, después de más de cinco años trabajando en la Organización, desempeñando diversos cometidos, analizando diferentes esferas de actuación y tras estudiar informes de diferentes organizaciones que supervisan el funcionamiento de la empresa me di cuenta que la Dirección General de la Marina Mercante podía cambiar de forma de actuar para modernizarse y ser más transparente, eficaz y eficiente. Esta tesis versa sobre la posibilidad de implantar un nuevo servicio en la Dirección General de la Marina Mercante que le permita mejorar su competitividad a nivel mundial, como estado de abanderamiento, y que, dentro de nuestras fronteras, haga que sus servicios se reorienten aprovechando el conocimiento de su personal, teniendo en cuenta las necesidades de sus usuarios y los recursos de la Organización. Las cartas de servicio permiten acercar al ciudadano al funcionamiento de la organización. Le informa de las condiciones en las que se presta el servicio, los compromisos de la empresa y la forma en la que puede participar para mejorarlos, entre otros. Por otra parte, la empresa no necesita previamente tener ningún sistema de calidad implantado, aunque, como veremos en el capítulo tres y cuatro siempre ayuda a la hora de tener sistemas de aseguramiento implantados. En el capítulo seis se detallan los objetivos que se lograrían con la implantación de las cartas de servicio en la DGMM y en el capítulo siete se discuten dichos resultados y conclusiones. ABSTRACT Different ways have been used by organizations to approach process improvement. Many Public Administrations chose quality and excellence EFQM model for that approachment. This quality program began in 80 decade and that it was the Europe Unión reference to continuous improvement autoevaluation and determination. It is based on strong and weak points of different organization fields, and they are considered as starting point for continuous improvement. This model allows enterprises to say that they are working on a quality scheme even though their score is very little, and this was why a lot of Public Administrations began using it. Nevertheless private enterprises chose quality management systems based on ISO standards. In these systems there is a threshold you must have to be able to have a certification or an accreditation of quality management system. ISO 9001:2008 is the standard most used because of it can be applied to a great range of enterprises. This system is focused on customer satisfaction and it is based on PDCA, Plan, Do, Check, Act. All these systems are documented ones, so once time goes by the same conclusion is reached: enterprises that have the certificate hung on the wall and that papers are fixed for audits have nothing that give them added value and they self-delusion. Quality management system power is related to the usage of human resources potential to lead enterprise resources efficiently and to make them participate in organization objectives. Naval architect training makes them to be critic with existing models and to try to find alternative ways to be more efficient. To achieve this goal, a precise knowledge of the organization is needed. That is the reason why, after five years in quality related issues in the Organization, in different chores, analyzing our scope and reports of organizations that supervise our operation, I realized that Merchant Marine Directorate could change the way of operation to modernize and be more transparent, efficient and effective. This thesis is about the possibility of implantation of a new service in Merchant Marine Directorate that will make it possible to improve their worldwide competitiveness as Flag State, and that to reorient all services taking into account citizens needs and Organization resources. Citizen’s charters able approachment to organization operation. It gives the following information: which are terms in which service is given, enterprise compromises, ways in which citizen can collaborate to improve them, and etc. Additionally, no quality management system is needed to be implemented. Although we’ll see in chapter three and four that having it is of great help. In chapter six are detailed goals achieved if citizen’s charters are implemented in Merchant Marine Directorate, and in chapter seven conclusions and results are discussed.

La importancia de conocer bien el entorno para un proyecto arquitectónico es que podemos adaptarlo a nuestras necesidades fisiológicas de Confort Térmico. Podemos decir entonces que el edificio juega un papel fundamental como técnica de control de nuestro entorno. El edificio nos debería entregar un entorno controlado para que nos sintamos bien térmicamente, considerando además, que la arquitectura por sí misma puede lograr dicho confort la mayor parte de las veces. De no ser así, los usuarios tienden a colocar elementos mecánicos, para generar frío o calor artificialmente. Es fundamental entonces que nuestros edificios, tengan una correcta interacción con los recursos naturales del lugar para lograr dicho confort térmico. Pero lograr el Confort Térmico en todos los edificios de una ciudad como unidad, no logrará que la ciudad entera sea confortable térmicamente, ya que las complejas interacciones hacen que la problemática se deba enfrentar como algo sistémico. Esto quiere decir, que para que una ciudad o un conjunto logren la Confortabilidad Térmica deseada por sus habitantes debiera haber sido planificada conforme a variables urbanas que interactúen con el medio natural en forma eficiente. Con la observación de ciertos conjuntos habitacionales antiguos en el interior del Valle del Elqui, Chile y de sus relaciones entre variables urbanas y naturales, queda de manifiesto ciertas características que conllevan a pensar que existió una planificación ambiental en éstos que llevaron a lograr un conjunto con características bioclimáticas. Las evidencias de la existencia en primer lugar de un patrón urbanístico en dichos conjuntos habitacionales antiguos, hacen pensar que dicho patrón se trataría de un patrón bioclimático rural planificado, lo que hace que exista un gran interés por el estudio de estos conjuntos. Hasta ahora, en Chile, los pocos estudios de Confort Térmico que existen, están orientados a edificaciones aisladas, al Confort térmico interior de la edificación en el ámbito urbano, y en nada a Patrones Bioclimáticos de Conjuntos Habitacionales en una situación de ruralidad como a la referida en esta investigación. Además, los estudios referidos al clima urbano, difieren a los del clima rural, por lo que se necesitan mayores estudios aún para comprender mejor la problemática. Es por esto, que la mayoría de los casos mencionados en este estudio son contextualizados al ámbito urbano por carecer de otros estudios rurales. Es en este sentido que esta investigación cobra real importancia y pretende establecer la relación existente entre las variables morfológicas rurales y los recursos naturales del lugar y que generan un confort térmico ideal para sus habitantes, al mismo tiempo, se analiza la existencia de un Patrón Bioclimático en un poblado denominado Algarrobito ubicado en la cuenca del Valle del Elqui, Chile. Es en este sentido que el propósito principal de este trabajo es determinar la real existencia de un Patrón Bioclimático que relacione la morfología rural y edificada de los antiguos poblados pertenecientes a la cuenca del Valle de Elqui Chile con el microclima del lugar. La metodología empleada se basa en realizar primeramente el estudio del microclima del lugar a través de las Cartas Bioclimáticas. Para ello se obtuvo información de datos climatológicos de las estaciones meteorológicas ubicadas en la cuenca del Valle de Elqui, principalmente las más cercanas al lugar de estudio. Mediante una revisión exhaustiva de la información arquitectónica, así como de una labor de reconocimiento en terreno realizada en el poblado seleccionado y de la aplicación del Climograma local, se identificaron las diferentes zonas bioclimáticas del poblado antiguo y potenciales áreas de estudio en el conjunto. Esta actividad incluyó un estudio preliminar de la energía solar local, vientos, humedad, temperaturas y su interacción con el conjunto, permitiendo una primera aproximación a la problemática del espacio exterior y las viviendas. Esto permitió en base a las condicionantes del lugar, la arquitectura vernácula y los materiales descubrir un Patrón en el antiguo conjunto que permitía entregar confortabilidad térmica a sus habitantes y darse cuenta también, que el nuevo conjunto emplazado en el sector no seguía ese patrón con las disfuncionalidades que ello llevaba. Con esto quedó demostrado en primer lugar la existencia de un Patrón Bioclimático rural, los beneficios del patrón, la importancia de éste como causante de Confortabilidad Térmica del conjunto, y por ende de mejor eficiencia energética, así como también, que el nuevo conjunto no sigue para nada este Patrón, pero que existe también la posibilidad de rectificación y por supuesto, que los nuevos desarrollos residenciales del Valle del Elqui, puedan planificarse en base al patrón bioclimático descubierto. ABSTRACT Knowing the environment of an architectonic proyect is really important for adjusting it to our physiological needs of Thermal Comfort. So we can say that the building plays a key role as a technique of control of our environment. The building should give us a controlled environment to make us feel good thermally, and it usually can reach pleasurable temperatures by itself. If it isn't like that, people cooled or heated the ambience with mechanical elements. So a correct interaction between the buildings and natural resources is important to reach a thermal comfort. But achieving Thermal Comfort in all the buildings of a city as a unit will not achieve the whole city is thermally comfortable, because the complex interactions cause the problem needs to be solved as something systemic. This means that for a city or a set reach the Thermal Comfortability desired by its inhabitants, it should have been planned according to the urban variables that interact with the natural environment efficiently. Observing some old housing complexes in Elqui Valley, Chile, and the relationships between their natural and urban variables, some features lead to think that the environmental planning in these led to achieve a set with bioclimatic features. First, the evidences about the existence of an urban pattern in those old housing complexes, make thinking that the pattern would be a planned urban pattern, which generates interest in its study. In Chile, there have been few studies about Thermal Comfort, oriented to isolated buildings and indoor thermal comfort, but Bioclimatic Urban Patterns haven't been studied at all. In this sense, this investigation acquires a real importance and pretends to establish the relationship between urban variables and natural resources of the place that generates a good thermal comfort for its habitants. At the same time, the existence of a Bioclimatic Urban Pattern in Algarrobito, located in Elqui Valley basin, Chile, is analized. It is in this sense that the main purpose of this work is to determine the real existence of a Bioclimatic Urban Pattern, that links the urban and constructive form of the old villages of it with its microclimate. The methodology used is based on performing first the study of the microclimate of the place through the Bioclimatic Cards. To do this, weather stations, located in Elqui valley, near the place that was studied, were used to obtain information of climatological data. The different bioclimatic zones to the old town and potential areas of study in the set were identified, through an exhaustive review of the architectural information, a field reconnaissance work performed on the selected town and the application of the Local Climograph. This activity included a preliminary study of the local solar energy, the winds, the moisture, the temperatures, and their interaction with the set, allowing a first aproximation to troubles of outer space and housing. This allowed, based on the conditions of the place, vernacular architecture and materials, discovering an urban pattern in the old set, which allowed to give thermal comfort to its inhabitants and realize that the new set of the place did not follow this pattern, with the dysfunctions that it carried. These points demonstrated, in first place, the existence of a Bioclimatic Urban Pattern, the benefits of it, the importance of it as a cause of Thermal Comfortability, and therefore a better efficiency of energy, also that the new set doesn’t follow this Pattern at all, but that the posibility of rectification exists and, of course, that the new residencial development in Elqui Valley can be planned based on bioclimatic pattern discovered.

Esta tesis se centra en la identificación y análisis de los factores que pueden favorecer o actuar como barreras del éxito de la implementación de la innovación y las relaciones entre sí, desde el enfoque de la interface marketing-ventas. El trabajo empírico se enmarca en el vacío de investigación existente en el campo del proceso de lanzamiento de nuevos productos en los mercados donde operan subsidiarias de empresas multinacionales de consumo masivo (FMCG). Las empresas FMCG son altamente dependientes de la innovación como proceso clave determinante del crecimiento competitivo de mediano y largo plazo. En un contexto de acortamiento del ciclo de vida de los productos, como resultado del desarrollo tecnológico y científico que impactan en el comportamiento de los consumidores, las empresas invierten un mayor nivel de recursos en el desarrollo de nuevos productos, reingeniería y programas de innovación (Mundra, Gulati y Gupta, 2013). Sin embargo, a pesar del aumento en la inversión, las tasas de éxito de la innovación reportadas son inferiores al 25% (Evanschitzky, Eisend, Calantone y Jiang, 2012). Aumentar las tasas de éxito de los proyectos de innovación es reconocida en la literatura como un elemento clave para la supervivencia y competitividad de las empresas, para ser superiores a su competencia y desarrollar nuevos modelos de negocios. A pesar de la existencia de estudios que intentan comprender el proceso de lanzamiento de nuevos productos, no se ha identificado un claro prototipo de gestión de la innovación (Gupta et al, 2007). Profundizando en los factores de éxito, los autores Keupp, Palmié y Gassman (2012) reconocen que la innovación exitosa no depende solamente de la estrategia de selección de los proyectos de innovación, sino también la forma en que los mismos son implementados (Klein and Sorra, 1996; Repenning, 2002; Keupp, Palmié y Gassmann, 2012). Al analizar la implementación de los proyectos de lanzamiento de nuevos productos al mercado, en empresas FMCG, dicho proceso es responsabilidad principalmente de las funciones de marketing y ventas a través de la comunicación con los consumidores y los clientes respectivamente (Ernst, Hoyer y Rubsaamen, 2010). Es decir que el éxito en la implementación de la innovación requiere la gestión efectiva de la relación inter-funcional entre marketing y ventas (Ernst, Hoyer y Rubsaamen, 2010; Hughes, Le Bon y Malshe, 2012). A pesar de la importancia de la integración entre marketing y ventas en la conceptualización e implementación de la innovación, este tema no ha sido estudiado en profundidad (Hughes, Le Bon y Malshe, 2012; Keupp, Palmié y Gassmann, 2012). En las empresas multinacionales, está demostrado que el desempeño de las subsidiarias determinan el éxito competitivo de la empresa a nivel global. El desafío de dichas subsidiarias es conjugar el desarrollo global de innovación y comunicación con las características locales de comportamiento del consumidor y el mercado. Por lo tanto, esta investigación empírica responde a la pregunta académica y de gestión acerca de cómo mejorar las tasas de éxito de lanzamiento de nuevos productos al mercado en subsidiarias de empresas de consumo masivo, desde la perspectiva de la relación entre marketing y ventas. En particular analiza cómo afectan la formalización de los procesos y los mecanismos de comunicación a la confianza interpersonal y a la efectividad de la interface marketing-ventas y dichos factores a su vez sobre la planificación integrada de la implementación de la innovación. La determinación de los factores o ítems que conforman cada uno de los constructos del proceso de ejecución de la innovación, se llevó a cabo a partir de una revisión exhaustiva del estado del arte de la literatura sobre las interfaces funcionales y el proceso de innovación. Posteriormente, los ítems seleccionados (más de 50 en total) fueron validados por referentes de marketing y ventas de Argentina y Uruguay a través de entrevistas en profundidad. A partir de los factores identificados se construyeron dos modelos teóricos: • (1) relativo a la influencia de las dimensiones de confianza interpersonal sobre la efectividad de las uniones inter-funcionales y como los mecanismos organizacionales, tales como la frecuencia y la calidad de la comunicación entre las áreas, afectan la confianza y la relación entre ellas; • (2) relativo a la dimensión planificación integrada de la implementación de la innovación, ya que durante el lanzamiento de nuevos productos al mercado, marketing y ventas utilizan procesos formales que facilitan la comunicación frecuente y efectiva, desarrollando confianza inter-personal que no solamente afecta la efectividad de su relación sino también el desarrollo de planes integrados entre ambas áreas. El estudio fue llevado a cabo en una empresa multinacional de consumo masivo que integra la lista Global 500 (Fortune, 2015), presente en todo el mundo con más de 25 marcas participantes en más de 15 categorías, implementando 150 proyectos de innovación en el último año. El grupo de subsidiarias en estudio fue reconocido a nivel mundial por su desempeño en crecimiento competitivo y su alta contribución al crecimiento total. El modelo analizado en esta tesis fue expandido al resto de América Latina, tratándose entonces de un caso ejemplar que representa una práctica de excelencia en la implementación de la innovación en subsidiarias de una empresa multinacional. La recolección de los datos fue llevado a cabo a través de un cuestionario estructurado y confidencial, enviado a la base de datos de todo el universo de directores y gerentes de marketing y ventas. El nivel de respuesta fue muy elevado (70%), logrando 152 casos válidos. El análisis de datos comprendió el análisis descriptivo de los mismos, estimación de fiabilidad y análisis factorial exploratorio a través del software SPSS v.20. El análisis factorial confirmatorio y el análisis de senderos para examinar las relaciones entre los factores se estudiaron mediante el software R (Package 2.15.1., R Core Team, 2012) (Fox, 2006). Finalmente se llevaron a cabo entrevistas en profundidad a gerentes de marketing y ventas de cada uno de los seis países con el fin de profundizar en los constructos y sus relaciones. Los resultados de los modelos demuestran que la frecuencia de comunicación impacta positivamente en la calidad de la misma, que a su vez afecta directamente la relación entre marketing y ventas. Adicionalmente, la calidad de la comunicación impacta sobre la confianza cognitiva, que a su vez se relaciona no solamente con la confianza afectiva sino también con la relación entre ambas áreas. Esto significa que para mejorar la implementación de la innovación, los gerentes deberían orientarse a reforzar la relación entre marketing y ventas facilitando la construcción de confianza interpersonal primero cognitiva y luego afectiva, incrementando la frecuencia de la comunicación que alimenta la calidad de la comunicación entre ambas áreas. A través del segundo modelo se demuestra que durante el lanzamiento de nuevos productos al mercado, marketing y ventas necesitan emplear procesos formales que faciliten la comunicación frecuente y efectiva. De esta forma se contrarresta el efecto negativo de la formalización sobre la planificación integrada entre ambas áreas. Adicionalmente, los gerentes de ambos departamentos deberían promover la construcción de confianza interpersonal, no solamente para mejorar la efectividad de la relación, sino también para desarrollar planes integrados de implementación de nuevos productos. Finalmente, se valida que la frecuencia de la comunicación, la confianza afectiva y la relación marketing-ventas, se relacionan positivamente con la planificación integrada en la implementación de la innovación. El estudio contribuye a la comprensión de los factores que las empresas pueden emplear para mejorar la relación inter-funcional entre marketing y ventas y la implementación de la innovación en empresas de consumo masivo. El aporte de esta investigación puede ser valorado de dos maneras, los aportes a la gestión y a la academia. Desde el punto de vista empresarial, provee a los líderes al frente de empresas de consumo masivo, del conocimiento sobre los factores que afectan la implementación de la innovación y en definitiva el éxito del negocio a mediano y largo plazo. Desde el punto de vista académico aporta al conocimiento del proceso de implementación de la innovación y en la efectividad de la interface marketing y ventas en un caso de buenas prácticas en el mercado de consumo masivo. A su vez incorpora por primera vez un estudio empírico en geografías emergentes capaces de recuperar el camino de crecimiento posterior a una profunda crisis económica a través de la exitosa implementación de la innovación en sus mercados. ABSTRACT This thesis is focused on the identification, analysis and relationship study of factors which may benefit or hinder the successful deployment of innovation, from a marketing-sales interface perspective. Considering the non-existent investigation dedicated to the study of new products launches into markets in which Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies’ subsidiaries operate, it is that this investigation has been carried out. FMCG companies rely on innovation as their key process for a competitive growth on a medium and long term basis. Nowadays, the life-cycle of products is getting shorter as a result of new technological and scientific development, having impact on consumer behavior, and therefore companies are forced to dedicating more resources to the development of new products, reengineering and innovation programs (Mundra, Gulati and Gupta, 2013). However, in spite of the investment increase, the innovation success rates have been reported to be lower than 25% (Evanschitzky, Eisend, Calantone y Jiang, 2012). Increasing success rates on innovation processes has been considered as a key element on the survival and competitiveness of companies, outperforming competitors and developing new business models. Despite new studies which try to comprehend the process of new products launch, a prototype of innovation management has not yet been identified (Gupta et al, 2007). Emphasizing on success factors, authors Keupp, Palmié and Gassman (2012) recognize that successful innovation does not solely depend on innovation processes’ selection strategy, but it is also based on the way in which these are implemented (Klein and Sorra, 1996; Repenning, 2002; Keupp, Palmié y Gassmann, 2012). While analyzing the implementation of projects for new products releases on massive consumption companies, the two departments in charge of taking this forward are marketing and sales, by focusing on communication strategies with consumers and clients respectively (Ernst, Hoyer y Rubsaamen, 2010). This means that having success on innovation implementation requires an effective management of inter-functional relationship among marketing and sales (Ernst, Hoyer y Rubsaamen, 2010; Hughes, Le Bon y Malshe, 2012). In spite of the importance on the integration between marketing and sales on the conceptualization and implementation of innovation, this subject has not been studied in depth (Hughes, Le Bon y Malshe, 2012; Keupp, Palmié y Gassmann, 2012). In multinational companies, previous research has confirmed that the performance of their subsidiaries determine the competitive success of the company on a global scale. The challenge of said subsidiaries is to conjugate the global innovation development and communication with the local consumer and market behavior. Therefore, this empirical study aims to respond to the academic and management question of how to improve the success rates of new product launches into MNE subsidiary’ markets, from a marketing-sales relationship perspective. Particularly, this investigation analyses how the formalization of products and communication mechanisms affect interpersonal trust and marketing-sales interface effectiveness and also on how these factors affect the overall planning of the implementation of innovation. The determination of which factors build the hypothesis of the innovation execution process was taken forward through an extensive research on the extant literature on functional interfaces and innovation processes. More than 50 items were selected which were in turn validated by marketing and sales referents on Uruguay and Argentina through in depth interviews. Based on the identified factors, two theoretical models were proposed: (1) Relative to the influence that interpersonal trust dimensions have on inter functional linkages effectiveness and how organizational mechanisms such as frequency and quality of communication between departments affect trust and their relationship. (2) Relative to the integrated planning and innovation implementation dimensions. Marketing and sales department use formal process thus allowing inter-personal trust, which affects positively their relationship and also enables the development of integrated planning between them. The study was performed within a massive consumption company which is part of the “Global 500” (Fortune, 2015), with subsidiaries all over the world and more than 25 participant brands in 15 categories, having implemented over 150 innovation projects in the year under study. The analyzed subsidiary group has been awarded worldwide for their performance in competitive growth and their high contribution to the total growth. The model being analyzed in this thesis was implemented throughout Latin America, representing a remarkable case of innovation implementation excellence for subsidiaries of multinational companies. Data recollection was carried out through a structured and confidential questionnaire, sent to the universe of marketing-sales directors and managers’ database available with a high level of responsiveness of 70%, resulting in 152 valid cases. Data exploration involved a descriptive analysis, followed by a reliability estimation and an exploratory factorial analysis carried out through SPSS v.20. Confirmatory factorial analysis and path analysis (to examine relations between the different study factors) were studied using “R” software (Package 2.15.1., R Core Team, 2012) (Fox, 2006). Finally, in depth interviews were carried out to several marketing and sales managers in each of the six countries so as to further confirm the hypothesis and their relations. The models results prove that communication frequency has a positive impact on the quality of the same, which in turn has direct effects on the marketing-sales relations. Additionally, communication quality has an impact on the cognitive trust, which also relates not only to affective trust, but also to the relation between both areas. This means that in order to improve the implementation of innovation, managers should strive to enforce marketing-sales relations, facilitating the interpersonal trust construction (firstly cognitive, followed by affective trust), increasing the communication frequency, and therefore nurturing the communication quality among both areas. Through the second model, the results confirm the importance of creating effective relationships between sales and marketing to facilitate planning integrated new product implementations. While formalized new product development processes provide opportunities for sales and marketing to communicate, this does not directly influence the planning of integrated new product implementations. By using these formal opportunities to communicate to create information quality, it is possible to improve sales and marketing’s ability to integrate information during the planning process. Further, communication quality creates inter-personal trust in the other party’s competences (cognitive-based trust), leading to affect-based trust. Affect-based inter-personal trust, not only to improve the overall effectiveness of the sales and marketing relationship, but also helps in planning integrated new product implementations. This study contributes to the understanding of factors which enterprises can use to improve the inter-functional relations between marketing and sales, and the implementation of innovation in FMCG companies. The contribution of this investigation can be measured in two ways: enrichment of management and contribution to the academic area. From a business perspective, it provides massive consumption businesses leaders with knowledge on which factors affect innovation implementation, which results on mid and long-term success for the company. From an academic point of view, it provides knowledge on a prototype of successful innovation implementation management based on the marketing-sales interface effectiveness through a case study in the FMCG consumption market. Last but not least, it incorporates for the first time an empiric study on emerging geographies capable of recovery post a deep economic crisis through successful innovation implementation on their markets.

La expansión de la ciudad y zona conurbada de Veracruz, se encuentra en una dinámica en donde convergen el medio artificial construido por el hombre y que ha generado una ciudad fragmentada; el medio natural, en el que se encuentran importantes componentes ecosistémicos de la zona costera; las políticas y estrategias que establecen los cinco Programas de ordenamiento urbano vigentes, sujetos al patrón de acumulación de capital, favoreciendo los intereses de la iniciativa privada. Bajo este panorama encontramos un territorio complejo que se encuentra cada vez más vulnerado y en riesgo de que los sistemas humano y natural colapsen. Lo anterior se evidencia en los nuevos desarrollos urbanizados, a partir del estudio de la problemática que presentan los fraccionamientos habitacionales, donde cada vez son más vulnerables, lo que constata su ineficiencia dentro del sistema urbano. ABSTRACT The expansion of the city and metropolitan area of Veracruz, is in a dynamic where converge the artificial environment built by the man and that has generated a fragmented city; natural environment, in which there are important ecosystem components of the coastal zone; policies and strategies that establish the five existing urban planning programs, subject to the pattern of accumulation of capital, favoring the private enterprises interests. Under this scenario is found a complex area that is more vulnerable every time and at risk of human and natural systems collapse. The above mentioned is evident in the new urbanized development, from studies of the problem posed by housing developments, finding that more and more vulnerable, which finds its inefficiency within the urban system.

The emergence of the controversial car service Uber has provoked a wide and heated discussion among economists specialising in the services sector in recent months. This Commentary explores the most salient questions being raised in the debate: Does Uber really offer a new service? And does it represent true innovation? The authors argue that there are some very interesting innovative elements associated with Uber, but those related to the specific industrial relations model might prove to be prejudiced against drivers.

This paper explains what happened during a three years long qualitative study at a mental health services organization. The study focuses on differences between espoused theory and theory in use during the implementation of a new service delivery model. This major organizational change occurred in a National policy environment of major health budget cutbacks. Primarily as a result of poor resourcing provided to bring about policy change and poor implementation of a series of termination plans, a number of constraints to learning contributed to the difficulties in implementing the new service delivery model. The study explores what occurred during the change process. Rather than blame participants of change for the poor outcomes, the study is set in a broader context of a policy environment—that of major health cutbacks.

This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of a three-way model of service development mentoring. This population health mentoring program was funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing to enable staff from eight Divisions of General Practice in South Australia to gain a sound understanding of population health concepts relevant to their workplace. The distinguishing features of service development mentoring were that the learning was grounded within an individual's work setting and experience; there was an identified population health problem or issue confronting the Division of General Practice; and there was an expectation of enhanced organisational performance. A formal evaluation found a consensus among all learners that mentoring was a positive and worthwhile experience, where they had achieved what they had set out to do. Mentors found the model of learning agreeable and effective. Division executive officers recognised enhanced skills among their "learner" colleagues, and commented positively on the benefits to their organisations through the development of well researched and relevant projects, with the potential to improve the efficiency of their population health activities.

As with all new ideas, the concept of Open Innovation requires extensive empirical investigation, testing and development. This paper analyzes Procter and Gamble's 'Connect and Develop' strategy as a case study of the major organizational and technological changes associated with open innovation. It argues that although some of the organizational changes accompanying open innovation are beginning to be described in the literature, more analysis is warranted into the ways technological changes have facilitated open innovation strategies, particularly related to new product development. Information and communications technologies enable the exchange of distributed sources of information in the open innovation process. The case study shows that furthermore a suite of new technologies for data mining, simulation, prototyping and visual representation, what we call 'innovation technology', help to support open innovation in Procter and Gamble. The paper concludes with a suggested research agenda for furthering understanding of the role played by and consequences of this technology.
