The radiation loss in the escaping light cone with a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal slab microcavity can be suppressed by means of cladding the low-Q slab microcavity by three-dimensional woodpile photonic crystals with the complete bandgap when the resonance frequency is located inside the complete bandgap. It is confirmed that the hybrid microcavity based on a low-Q, single-defect photonic crystal slab microcavity shows improvement of the Q factor without affecting the mode volume and modal frequency. Whereas 2D slab microcavities exhibit Q saturation with an increase in the number of layers, for the analyzed hybrid microcavities with a small gap between the slab and woodpiles, the Q factor does not saturate.

Heating 2,5-di-O-methanesulfonyl-1,4:3,6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol (1) in a range of solvents led to the formation of a gel state at low concentrations. 1 was found to gel aromatics, alcohols and water. The structure of 1 in the solid state was solved by single crystal X-ray crystallography; no strong hydrogen bonds or associated solvents were found in the crystal. Electron micrographs revealed the morphology of the gels to be predominantly rod-like. The ethanol alcogel was used to template silica by sol-gel transcription.

New low-cost ionic liquids containing methyl- and ethyl-sulfate anions can be easily and efficiently prepared under ambient conditions by the reaction of 1-alkylimidazoles with dimethyl sulfate and diethyl sulfate. The preparation and characterization of a series of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium alkyl sulfate and 1,2,3-trialkylimidazolium alkyl sulfate salts are reported. 1,3-Dialkylimidazolium salts containing at least one non-methyl N-alkyl substituent are liquids at, or below room, temperature. Three salts were crystalline at room temperature, the single crystal X-ray structure of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate was determined and shows the formation of discrete ribbons comprising of two anion-cation hydrogen-bonded chains linked via intra-chain hydrogen-bonding, but little, or no inter-ribbon hydrogen-bonding. The salts are stable, water soluble, inherently 'chloride-free', display an electrochemical window of greater than 4 V, and can be used as alternatives to the corresponding halide salts in metathesis reactions to prepare other ionic liquids including 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate.

New air-stable ruthenium(II) complexes that contain the aryldiamine ligand [C6H3(CH2-NMe2)(2)-2,6](-) (NCN) are described. These complexes are [RuCl{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(eta(6)-C10H14)] (2; C10H14 = p-cymene = C6H4Me-Pr-i-4), [Ru{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)] (5), and their isomeric forms [RuCl{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,4}(eta(6)-C10H14)] (3) and [Ru{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,4}(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)] (6), respectively. Complex 2 has been prepared from the reaction of [Li(NCN)](2) with [RuCl2(eta(6)-C10H14)](2), whereas complex 5 has been prepared by the treatment of [RuCl{eta(3)-N,C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(PPh3)] (4) with [Na(C5H5)](n). Both 2 and 5 are formally 18-electron ruthenium(II) complexes in which the monoanionic potentially tridentate coordinating ligand NCN is eta(2)-C,N-bonded, In solution (halocarbon solvent at room temperature or in aromatic solvents at elevated temperature), the intramolecular rearrangements of 2 and 5 afford complexes 3 and 6, respectively. This is a result of a shift of the metal-C-aryl bond from position-1 to position-3 on the aromatic ring of the NCN ligand. The mechanism of the isomerization is proposed to involve a sequence of intramolecular oxidative addition and reductive elimination reactions of both aromatic and aliphatic C-H bonds. This is based on results from deuterium labeling, spectroscopic studies, and some kinetic experiments. The mechanism is proposed to contain fully reversible steps in the case of 5, but a nonreversible step involving oxidative addition of a methyl NCH2-H bond in the case of 2. The solid-state structures of complexes 2, 3, 5, and 6 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A new dinuclear 1,4-phenylene-bridged bisruthenium(II) complex, [1,4-{RuCl(eta(6)-C10H14)}(2){C-6(CH2NMe2)(4)-2,3,5,6-C,N,C',N'}] (9) has also been prepared from the dianionic ligand [C-6(CH2NMe2)(4)-2,3,5,6](2-) (C2N4). The C2N4 ligand is in an eta(2)-C,N-eta(2)-C',N'-bis(bidentate) bonding mode. Compound 9 does not isomerize in solution (halocarbon solvent), presumably because of the absence of an accessible C-aryl-H bond. Complex 9 could not be isolated in an analytically pure form, probably because of its high sensitivity to air and very low solubility, which precludes recrystallization.

Ceria (CeO2) and ceria-based composite materials, especially Ce1-xZrxO2 solid solutions, possess a wide range of applications in many important catalytic processes, such as three-way catalysts, owing to their excellent oxygen storage capacity (OSC) through the oxygen vacancy formation and refilling. Much of this activity has focused on the understanding of the electronic and structural properties of defective CeO2 with and without doping, and comprehending the determining factor for oxygen vacancy formation and the rule to tune the formation energy by doping has constituted a central issue in material chemistry related to ceria. However, the calculation on electronic structures and the corresponding relaxation patterns in defective CeO2-x oxides remains at present a challenge in the DFT framework. A pragmatic approach based on density functional theory with the inclusion of on-site Coulomb correction, i.e. the so-called DFT + U technique, has been extensively applied in the majority of recent theoretical investigations. Firstly, we review briefly the latest electronic structure calculations of defective CeO2(111), focusing on the phenomenon of multiple configurations of the localized 4f electrons, as well as the discussions of its formation mechanism and the catalytic role in activating the O-2 molecule. Secondly, aiming at shedding light on the doping effect on tuning the oxygen vacancy formation in ceria-based solid solutions, we summarize the recent theoretical results of Ce1-xZrxO2 solid solutions in terms of the effect of dopant concentrations and crystal phases. A general model on O vacancy formation is also discussed; it consists of electrostatic and structural relaxation terms, and the vital role of the later is emphasized. Particularly, we discuss the crucial role of the localized structural relaxation patterns in determining the superb oxygen storage capacity in kappa-phase Ce1-xZr1-xO2. Thirdly, we briefly discuss some interesting findings for the oxygen vacancy formation in pure ceria nanoparticles (NPs) uncovered by DFT calculations and compare those with the bulk or extended surfaces of ceria as well as different particle sizes, emphasizing the role of the electrostatic field in determining the O vacancy formation.

Using the Physical Vapor Transport method, single crystals of Cd2Re207 have been grown, and crystals of dimensions up to 8x6x2 mm have been achieved. X-ray diffraction from a single crystal of Cd2Re207 has showed the crystal growth in the (111) plane. Powder X-ray diffraction measurements were performed on ^^O and ^^O samples, however no difference was observed. Assigning the space group Fd3m to Cd2Re207 at room temperature and using structure factor analysis, the powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the sample was explained through systematic reflection absences. The temperatiure dependence of the resistivity measurement of ^^O has revealed two structural phase transitions at 120 and 200 K, and the superconducting transition at 1.0 K. Using Factor Group Analysis on three different structiures of Cd2Re207, the number of IR and Raman active phonon modes close to the Brillouin zone centre have been determined and the results have been compared to the temperature-dependence of the Raman shifts of ^^O and ^*0 samples. After scaling (via removing Bose-Einstein and Rayleigh scattering factors from the scattered light) all spectra, each spectrum was fitted with a number of Lorentzian peaks. The temperature-dependence of the FWHM and Raman shift of mode Eg, shows the effects of the two structurjil phase transitions above Tc. The absolute reflectance of Cd2Re207 - '^O single crystals in the far-infrared spectral region (7-700 cm~^) has been measured in the superconducting state (0.5 K), right above the superconducting state (1.5 K), and in the normal state (4.2 K). Thermal reflectance of the sample at 0.5 K and 1.5 K indicates a strong absorption feature close to 10 cm~^ in the superconducting state with a reference temperature of 4.2 K. By means of Kramers-Kronig analysis, the absolute reflectance was used to calculate the optical conductivity and dielectric function. The real part of optical conductivity shows five distinct active phonon modes at 44, 200, 300, 375, and 575 cm~' at all temperatures including a Drude-like behavior at low frequencies. The imaginary part of the calculated dielectric function indicates a mode softening of the mode 44 cm~' below Tc.

Purple bronze Li0.9Mo6O17 has attracted researchers for its low dimensionality and corresponding properties. Although it has been studied for nearly two decades, there are still some unsolved puzzles with this unique material. Single crystals of Li0.9Mo6O17 were grown using the temperature gradient flux technique in this research. The crystal growth was optimized by experimenting different conditions and good quality crystals were obtained. X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the right phase of the crystals. Resistivity measurements and magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out, and anomalous electronic behaviors were found. All of the samples showed the metal-insulator transition near 20K, followed by behavior that differs from sample to sample: either superconducting, metallic or insulating behavior was observed below 2K. Li0.9Mo6O17 was considered as a quasi-one-dimensional crystal and also a superconducting crystal, which implies a dimensional crossover may occur at the metal-insulator transition. A two-band scenario of the Luttinger liquid model was used to fit the resistivity data and excellent results were achieved, suggesting that the Luttinger theory is a very good candidate for the explanation of the anomalous behavior of Li0.9Mo6O17. In addition, the susceptibility measurements showed Curie paramagnetism and some temperature independent paramagnetism at low temperature. The absence of any anomalous magnetic feature near 20K where the resistivity upturn takes place, suggests that a charge density wave mechanism, which has been proposed by some researchers, is not responsible for the unique properties of Li0.9Mo6O17.

Mn(II) complexes derived from a set of acylhydrazones were synthesised and characterized by elemental analyzes, IR, UV–vis and X-band EPR spectral studies as well as conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. In the reported complexes, the hydrazones exist either in the keto or enolate form, as evidenced by IR spectral data. Crystal structures of two complexes are well established using single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. In both of these complexes two equivalent monoanionic ligands are coordinated in a meridional fashion using cis pyridyl, trans azomethine nitrogen and cis enolate oxygen atoms positioned very nearly perpendicular to each other. EPR spectra in DMF solutions at 77 K show hyperfine sextets and in some of the complexes the low intensity forbidden lines lying between each of the two hyperfine lines are also observed

A series of self-assembling terminally blocked tripeptides (containing coded amino acids) form gels in various aromatic solvents including benzene, toluene, xylenes at low concentrations. However these tripeptides do not form gels in aliphatic hydrocarbons like n-hexane, cyclohexane, n-decane etc. Morphological studies of the dried gel indicate the presence of an entangled fibrous network, which is responsible for gelation. Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) studies of the gels produced by peptide 1 clearly demonstrates thermoreversible nature of the gel and tripeptide-solvent complex may be produced during gel formation. FT-IR and H-1 NMR studies of the gels demonstrate that an intermolecular hydrogen-bonding network is formed during gelation. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies for peptides 1, 2 and 3 have been performed to investigate the molecular arrangement that might be responsible for forming the fibrous network of these self-assembling peptide gelators. It has been found that the morph responsible for gelation of peptides 1, 2 and 3 in benzene is somewhat different from that of its xerogel.

A family of ruthenium (III) complexes of tetradentate monobasic NSNO donor chelators (HL) have been synthesized and isolated in their pure form. On chromatographic separation, trans-dichloro and cis-dichloro ruthenium (111) complexes of pyridylthioazophenolates are eluted using 19:1 and 7:3 (v/v) DCM-MeOH mixtures, respectively. Both cis and trans isomers of the dark brown colored ruthenium (111) complexes, having the general formula of [Ru(L)Cl-2], have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic and other physico-chemical tools. The magnetic moments of both the cis- and trans-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes are in the range of 1.71-1.79 BM. One of the complexes, trans-[Ru(L1)Cl-2] (2a), has been subjected to single-crystal X-ray analysis which confirms that the chlorines are in mutually trans positions in the molecule. The EPR spectra of the cis-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes (1) in DMF are consistent with the fact that the complexes are low-spin octahedral with one unpaired electron having three different g values (g(x) not equal g(y) not equal g(z)) complexes are monomeric with an octahedral coordination sphere. The electrochemical studies of [Ru(L)Cl,] in DMF show a quasi-reversible voltammogram. The reduction potentials for the cis-isomers are comparatively lower than those of the corresponding trans isomers. On reaction with the bidentate bipyridyl ligand in the presence of AgNO3, the cis-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes (1) produce a series of complexes with the general formula [Ru(L)(bpy)(2)](PF6)(2) (3). which have also been characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic and other physico-chemical tools. Two vanadium(V) complexes, [VO(L-1)]acac)] (1) and [VO(L-2)(acac)] (2), where H2L1 = N,N-bis(2-hydroxy-3-5-di-tert-butyl-benzyl)propylamine and H2L2 = 2,2'-selenobis(4,6-di-tert-butylphenol), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, V-51 NMR, both in the solid and in solution, and cyclic voltammetric studies. Single crystal X-ray studies reveal that in complex 1 the vanadium atom is octahedrally coordinated with an O5N donor environment, where the oxygen atom of the V-V=O moiety and the N atom of the ONO ligand occupy the axial sites while two oxygen atoms (O1 and O2) from the bisphenolate ligand and two oxygen atoms (O3 and O4) from the acac ligand occupy the equatorial plane. A similar bonding pattern has also been encountered for 2 with the exception that a Se atom instead of N is involved in weak bonding to the metal center. Both complexes showed reversible cyclic voltammeric responses and E-1/2 appears at -0.18 and 0.10 V versus NHE for complexes 1 and 2, respectively. The kinetics of oxidation of ascorbic acid by complex 1 were carried out in 50% MeCN-50% HO (v/v) at 25 degrees C. The high formation constant value, Q = 63 +/- 7 M-1, reveals that the reaction proceeds through the rapid formation of a H-bonded intermediate. The low k(2)Q(2)/k(1)Q(1) ratio (13.4) for 1 points out that there is extensive H-bonding between the oxygen atom of the V-V=O group and the OH group of ascorbic acid. Three mu(1.5)-dicyanamide bridged Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes having molecular formula [Mn(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n)center dot(hmt)(n) (1), [Co(dca)(2) (H2O)(2)](n)center dot(hmt)(n) (2) and [Co(dca)(2)(bpds)](n) (3) [dca = dicyanamide; hmt = hexamethylenetetramine; bpds = 4,4'-bipyridyl disulfide] have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction study, low temperature (300-2 K) magnetic measurement and thermal behavior. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 and 2 reveals that they are isostructural, comprising of 1D coordination polymers [M(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) [M = Mn(II), Co(II) for 1 and 2. respectively] with uncoordinated hmt molecules located among the chains. The [M(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) chains and the lattice hint molecules are connected through H-bonds resulting in a 3D supramolecular architecture. The octahedral N4O2 chromophore surrounding the metal ion forms via two trans located water oxygens and four nitrogens from four nitrile dca. Complex 3 is a 1D chain formed by two mu(1.5)-dca and one bridging bpds. The octahedral N-6 coordination sphere surrounding the cobalt ions comprises four nitrogens from dca and two from bpds. Low temperature magnetic study indicates small antiferromagnetic coupling for all the complexes. Best fit parameters for 1: J = -0.17 cm(-1), g = -2.03 with R = 6.1 x 10(-4), for 2, J = -0.50 cm(-1), and for 3, J = -0.95 cm(-1). (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three new carboxylato-bridged polymeric networks of Mn-II having molecular formula [Mn(ox)(dpyo)](n) (1), {[Mn-2(mal)(2)(bpee)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5(bpee)center dot 0.5(CH3OH)}n, (2) and {[Mn-3(btc)(2)(2,2'-bipy)(2)(H2O)(6)]center dot 4H(2)O}(n) (3) [dpyo, 4,4'-bipyridine N,N'dioxide; bpee, trans-1,2 bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene; 2,2'-bipy, 2,2'-bipyridine; ox = oxalate dianion; mal = malonate dianion; btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate trianion] have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and low temperature magnetic measurements. Structure determination of complex I reveals a covalent bonded 2D network containing bischelating oxalate and bridging dpyo; complex 2 is a covalent, bonded 3D polymeric architecture, formed by bridging malonate and bpee ligands, resulting in an open framework with channels filled by uncoordinated disordered bpee and methanol molecules. Whereas complex 3, comprising btc anions bound to three metal centers, is a 1D chain which further extends its dimensionality to 3D via pi-pi and H-bonding interactions. Low temperature magnetic measurements reveal the existence of weak antiferromagnetic interaction in all these complexes. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2006).
