In hydrosedimentology studies the determination of the trace element concentrations at the study site is imperative, since this background can be used to assess the enrichment of sediments with these elements. This enrichment can be the result of the natural process of geological formation or of anthropogenic activities. In the latter case, guidelines are used to indicate the concentrations at which trace elements cause ecotoxicity effects on the environment. Thus, this study used legal reserve areas in the municipality of Toledo, PR, where natural forests are maintained, with no or minimal human interference to establish background levels. The results of atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled argon plasma showed that the legal reserves have lower levels of trace elements than other theoretical references, but equivalent concentrations to the safety levels recommended by international guidelines. It was concluded that determining values is fundamental to recommend this background as scientific database for research in the area of hydrosedimentology of this site and also as a way of environmental management of the watershed of this municipality.

We report here on the magnetic properties of compounds of composition Fe1−xCrxSbO4 and Fe1−xGaxSbO4. The introduction of paramagnetic Cr3+ and diamagnetic Ga3+ into the rutile‐related iron antimonate lattice does not destroy the antisite atomic ordering which exists in iron antimonate of composition FeSbO4. The initial slope of the Curie temperature dependence on x is similar in both series, indicating that Fe3+‐Cr3+ interactions are very small. The magnetic susceptibility measurements recorded from the compounds of composition Fe1−xCrxSbO4, x<0.4, and Fe0.9Ga0.1SbO4 show them to behave as spin glasses at low temperatures. The inhibition of compounds of the type Fe1−xCrxSbO4, x>0.4, and Fe1−xGaxSbO4, x>0.1 to undergo a spin‐glass transition above 4.2 K is associated with a dilution effect.

Mouse-human chimeric monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) of 3 different human IgG sub-classes directed against carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) have been produced in SP-0 cells transfected with genomic chimeric DNA. F(ab')2 fragments were obtained by pepsin digestion of the purified chimeric MAbs of human IgG1, IgG2 and IgG4 sub-class and of parental mouse MAb IgG1. The 4 F(ab')2 fragments exhibit similar molecular weight by SDS-PAGE. They were labelled with 125I or 131I and high binding (80 to 87%) to purified unsolubilized CEA was observed. In vivo, double labelling experiments indicate that the longest biological half-life and the highest tumour-localization capacity is obtained with F(ab')2 from chimeric MAb of human IgG2 sub-class, whereas F(ab')2 from chimeric MAb IgG4 give very low values for these 2 parameters. F(ab')2 from chimeric MAb IgG1 and from parental mouse MAb yield intermediate results in vivo. Our findings should help to select the appropriate human IgG sub-class to produce chimeric or reshaped MAb F(ab')2 to be used for tumour detection by immunoscintigraphy and for radioimmunotherapy.

The plutonic rocks of the Basal Complex of La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain, were studied by means of major and trace element contents and by H-O-Sr-Nd isotope compositions in order to distinguish primary magmatic characteristics and late-stage alteration products. Deciphering the effects of alteration allowed us to determine primary, plume-related compositions that indicated D- and (18)O-depletion relative to normal upper mantle, supporting the conclusions of earlier studies on the plutonic rocks of Fuerteventura and La Palma. Late-stage alteration took place during the formation of the intrusive series induced by interaction with meteoric water. Inferred isotopic compositions of the meteoric water indicate that the water infiltrated into the rock edifice at a height of about 1500 m above sea level, suggesting the existence of a subaerial volcano which was active during the intrusive activity and that it has been either distroyed or remain buried by later volcanic and landslide events.

Red clays from Cenozoic palaeosols of the Eastern Alps record periods of stagnating uplift and decrease of relief. Tropical to sub-tropical weathering of a crystalline substratum formed dominant or abundant kaolinite, reflecting Paleogene and Early Miocene conditions, respectively. Abundant illite and chlorite, but a lack of kaolinite in red clays on the plateaus of the Northern Calcareous Alps reflects feldspar-poor compositons of the Cenozoic siliciclastic cover. The presence of high Ba/Sr and Rb/Sr ratios and vermiculite in these red clays indicates high precipitation and temperate weathering conditions, respectively, during the Late Miocene and Early Pilocene on the uplifting plateaus of the Northern Calcareous Alps.

Collective behaviour enhances environmental sensing and decision-making in groups of animals. Experimental and theoretical investigations of schooling fish, flocking birds and human crowds have demonstrated that simple interactions between individuals can explain emergent group dynamics. These findings indicate the existence of neural circuits that support distributed behaviours, but the molecular and cellular identities of relevant sensory pathways are unknown. Here we show that Drosophila melanogaster exhibits collective responses to an aversive odour: individual flies weakly avoid the stimulus, but groups show enhanced escape reactions. Using high-resolution behavioural tracking, computational simulations, genetic perturbations, neural silencing and optogenetic activation we demonstrate that this collective odour avoidance arises from cascades of appendage touch interactions between pairs of flies. Inter-fly touch sensing and collective behaviour require the activity of distal leg mechanosensory sensilla neurons and the mechanosensory channel NOMPC. Remarkably, through these inter-fly encounters, wild-type flies can elicit avoidance behaviour in mutant animals that cannot sense the odour--a basic form of communication. Our data highlight the unexpected importance of social context in the sensory responses of a solitary species and open the door to a neural-circuit-level understanding of collective behaviour in animal groups.

The diverse vertebrate remains from the Upper Cretaceous freshwater settings at Iharkut, Hungary, contain two fossil groups, Pycnodontiformes fish and Mosasauridae that are almost exclusively known from marine palaeo-environments. Hence, their appearance in alluvial sediments is very unusual. Trace element and isotope compositions of the remains have been analyzed to investigate the taphonomy and the ecological differences among the different fossil groups present at Iharkut. All examined fossils have undergone post-depositional diagenetic alteration, which resulted in high concentrations of REE, U, and Fe, together with almost complete homogenization of delta(18)O(CO3) values. Similar REE patterns in different fossils suggest a common origin for all remains, hence the discovered species most likely lived in the same local ecosystem. Despite partial diagenetic overprinting, the delta(18)O(PO4) values of the fossils indicate sufficient taxon-specific isotopic diversity to permit some broad conclusions on the palaeo-environment of the fossils. In particular, it is apparent that the isotopic composition of the Pycnodontiformes fish and Mosasauridae remains is most compatible with a freshwater palaeo-habitat and incompatible with a marine palaeo-environment. In addition, the Sr concentration and isotope data indicate that the Pycnodontiformes and Mosasauridae likely lived predominantly in a freshwater environment and were not simply occasional visitors to the Iharkut river ecosystem. Regarding other fossil groups, high delta(18)O(PO4) values of Alligatoroidea and Iharkutosuchus teeth suggest that these small crocodile species might have inhabited swamps and ponds where the water was relatively rich in (18)O due to evaporation. A five year program of systematic multi-element geochemical exploration of the Catalonian Coastal Ranges has been initiated by the Geological Survey of Autonomic Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) and the Department of Geological and Geophysical Exploration (University of Barcelona). This paper reports the first stage results of this regional survey, covering an area of 530 km2 in the Montseny Mountains, NE of Barcelona (Spain). Stream sediments for metals and stream waters for fluoride were chosen because of the regional characteristics. Four target areas for future tactic survey were recognized after the prospect. The most important is a 40 km* zone in the Canoves-Vilamajor area, with high base metal values accompanied by Cd, Ni, Co, As and Sb anomalies. Keywords: Catalanides. Geochemical exploration. The melanocortin system is implicated in the expression of many phenotypic traits. Activation of the melanocortin MC(1) receptor by melanocortin hormones induces the production of brown/black eumelanic pigments, while activation of the four other melanocortin receptors affects other physiological and behavioural functions including stress response, energy homeostasis, anti-inflammatory and sexual activity, aggressiveness and resistance to oxidative stress. We recently proposed the hypothesis that some melanocortin-physiological and -behavioural traits are correlated within individuals. This hypothesis predicts that the degree of eumelanin production may, in some cases, be associated with the regulation of glucocorticoids, immunity, resistance to oxidative stress, energy homeostasis, sexual activity, and aggressiveness. A review of the zoological literature and detailed experimental studies in a free-living population of barn owls (Tyto alba) showed that indeed melanic coloration is often correlated with the predicted physiological and behavioural traits. Support for predictions of the hypothesis that covariations between coloration and other phenotypic traits stem from pleiotropic effects of the melanocortin system raises a number of theoretical and empirical issues from evolutionary and pharmacological point of views.

This study investigates the sedimentological and geochemical changes that occurred during the last 2200 years in the meromictic Lake Lucerne (Switzerland), one of the largest freshwater lakes of Central Europe. The stable isotope composition (delta C-13 and delta O-18 values) of bulk carbonates is compared to changes in grain-size distribution (clay and silt fraction), natural trace element input (titanium and thorium concentrations), and organic material abundance (C-org, nitrogen and phosphorus) and composition (C/N ratios and hydrogen and oxygen indexes). A drop in carbonate accumulation and in the delta O-18 values of sediments between ca. AD 500 and 700 followed a large and consistent rise in chemical weathering, marked by increases in the silicate-clay fraction and in crustal element concentrations. During the following millennium, there was a long-term decreasing trend in the lithogenic trace element input and in the phosphorus loading, suggesting decreasing terrigeneous input from runoff water. The major sedimentological change over the studied period occurred after ca. AD 1800 with a significant increase in the erosion-driven silt-fraction and in the sedimentation rate. During the last century, human-induced increase in nutrient input to the lake highly enhanced the accumulation of organic matter in sediment. Changes in nutrients and oxygen conditions in the hypolimnion of Lake Lucerne during the eutrophication period (i.e., the last 40 years) highly modified the geochemical fluxes compared to the relatively stable oligotrophic conditions that prevailed during the previous 2000 years. Before the 19th century, climate driven meromixis had a limited impact on the organic matter flux to the sediments, but the accumulation of carbonate considerably decreased during periods of lower mechanical erosion rates and high chemical weathering rates.
