This paper describes the first set of experiments defined by the MIRACLE (Multilingual Information RetrievAl for the CLEf campaign) research group for some of the cross language tasks defined by CLEF. These experiments combine different basic techniques, linguistic-oriented and statistic-oriented, to be applied to the indexing and retrieval processes.

The modelling of critical infrastructures (CIs) is an important issue that needs to be properly addressed, for several reasons. It is a basic support for making decisions about operation and risk reduction. It might help in understanding high-level states at the system-of-systems layer, which are not ready evident to the organisations that manage the lower level technical systems. Moreover, it is also indispensable for setting a common reference between operator and authorities, for agreeing on the incident scenarios that might affect those infrastructures. So far, critical infrastructures have been modelled ad-hoc, on the basis of knowledge and practice derived from less complex systems. As there is no theoretical framework, most of these efforts proceed without clear guides and goals and using informally defined schemas based mostly on boxes and arrows. Different CIs (electricity grid, telecommunications networks, emergency support, etc) have been modelled using particular schemas that were not directly translatable from one CI to another. If there is a desire to build a science of CIs it is because there are some observable commonalities that different CIs share. Up until now, however, those commonalities were not adequately compiled or categorized, so building models of CIs that are rooted on such commonalities was not possible. This report explores the issue of which elements underlie every CI and how those elements can be used to develop a modelling language that will enable CI modelling and, subsequently, analysis of CI interactions, with a special focus on resilience

Today, it is more and more important to develop competences in the learning process of the university students (that is to say, to acquire knowledge but also skills, abilities, attitudes and values). This is because professional practice requires that the future graduates design and market products, defend the interests of their clients, be introduced in the Administration or, even, in the Politics. Universities must form professionals that become social and opinion leaders, consultants, advisory, entrepreneurs and, in short, people with capacity to solve problems. This paper offers a tool to evaluate the application for the professor of different styles of management in the process of the student’s learning. Its main contribution consists on advancing toward the setting in practice of a model that overcomes the limitations of the traditional practices based on the masterful class, and that it has been applied in Portugal and Spain.

In the year 1999 approves the Law of Construction Building (LOE, in Spanish) to regulate a sector such as construction, which contained some shortcomings from the legal point of view. Currently, the LOE has been in force 12 years, changing the spanish world of the construction, due to influenced by internationalization. Within the LOE, there regulating the different actors involved in the construction building, as the Projects design, the Director of Construction, the developer, The builder, Director of execution of the construction (actor only in Spain, similar as construcion engineer and abroad in), control entities and the users, but lacks figure Project manager will assume the delegation of the promoter helping and you organize, direct and management the process. This figure assumes that the market and contracts are not legally regulated in Spain, then should define and establish its regulation in the LOE. (Spain Construction Law) The translation in spanish of the words "Project Manager is owed to Professor Rafael de Heredia in his book Integrated Project Management, as agent acting on behalf of the organization and promoter assuming control of the project, ie Integraded Project Management . Already exist in Spain, AEDIP (Spanish Association Integrated of Project Construction management) which comprises the major companies in “Project Management” in Spain, and MeDIP (Master in Integrated Construction Project) the largest and most advanced studies at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, in "Construction Project Management" they teach which is also in Argentina. The Integrated Project ("Project Management") applied to the construction process is a methodological technique that helps to organize, control and manage the resources of the promoters in the building process. When resources are limited (which is usually most situations) to manage them efficiently becomes very important. Well, we find that in this situation, the resources are not only limited, but it is limited, so a comprehensive control and monitoring of them becomes not only important if not crucial. Among the agents listed in the building process, "Project Management" or DIPE (Director Comprehensive building process, a proposed name for possible incorporation into the LOE, ) currently not listed as such in the LOE (Act on Construction Planning ), one of the agents that exist within the building process is not regulated from the legal point of view, no obligations, ie, as is required by law to have a project, a builder, a construction management, etc. DIPE only one who wants to hire you as have been advanced knowledge of their services by the clients they have been hiring these agents, there being no legal obligation as mentioned above, then the market is dictating its ruling on this new figure, as if it were necessary, he was not hired and eventually disappeared from the building process. This PhD thesis contributes to the problem of resource and service discovery in the context of the composable web. In the current web, mashup technologies allow developers reusing services and contents to build new web applications. However, developers face a problem of information flood when searching for appropriate services or resources for their combination. To contribute to overcoming this problem, a framework is defined for the discovery of services and resources. In this framework, three levels are defined for performing discovery at content, discovery and agente levels. The content level involves the information available in web resources. The web follows the Representational Stateless Transfer (REST) architectural style, in which resources are returned as representations from servers to clients. These representations usually employ the HyperText Markup Language (HTML), which, along with Content Style Sheets (CSS), describes the markup employed to render representations in a web browser. Although the use of SemanticWeb standards such as Resource Description Framework (RDF) make this architecture suitable for automatic processes to use the information present in web resources, these standards are too often not employed, so automation must rely on processing HTML. This process, often referred as Screen Scraping in the literature, is the content discovery according to the proposed framework. At this level, discovery rules indicate how the different pieces of data in resources’ representations are mapped onto semantic entities. By processing discovery rules on web resources, semantically described contents can be obtained out of them. The service level involves the operations that can be performed on the web. The current web allows users to perform different tasks such as search, blogging, e-commerce, or social networking. To describe the possible services in RESTful architectures, a high-level feature-oriented service methodology is proposed at this level. This lightweight description framework allows defining service discovery rules to identify operations in interactions with REST resources. The discovery is thus performed by applying discovery rules to contents discovered in REST interactions, in a novel process called service probing. Also, service discovery can be performed by modelling services as contents, i.e., by retrieving Application Programming Interface (API) documentation and API listings in service registries such as ProgrammableWeb. For this, a unified model for composable components in Mashup-Driven Development (MDD) has been defined after the analysis of service repositories from the web. The agent level involves the orchestration of the discovery of services and contents. At this level, agent rules allow to specify behaviours for crawling and executing services, which results in the fulfilment of a high-level goal. Agent rules are plans that allow introspecting the discovered data and services from the web and the knowledge present in service and content discovery rules to anticipate the contents and services to be found on specific resources from the web. By the definition of plans, an agent can be configured to target specific resources. The discovery framework has been evaluated on different scenarios, each one covering different levels of the framework. Contenidos a la Carta project deals with the mashing-up of news from electronic newspapers, and the framework was used for the discovery and extraction of pieces of news from the web. Similarly, in Resulta and VulneraNET projects the discovery of ideas and security knowledge in the web is covered, respectively. The service level is covered in the OMELETTE project, where mashup components such as services and widgets are discovered from component repositories from the web. The agent level is applied to the crawling of services and news in these scenarios, highlighting how the semantic description of rules and extracted data can provide complex behaviours and orchestrations of tasks in the web. The main contributions of the thesis are the unified framework for discovery, which allows configuring agents to perform automated tasks. Also, a scraping ontology has been defined for the construction of mappings for scraping web resources. A novel first-order logic rule induction algorithm is defined for the automated construction and maintenance of these mappings out of the visual information in web resources. Additionally, a common unified model for the discovery of services is defined, which allows sharing service descriptions. Future work comprises the further extension of service probing, resource ranking, the extension of the Scraping Ontology, extensions of the agent model, and contructing a base of discovery rules. Resumen La presente tesis doctoral contribuye al problema de descubrimiento de servicios y recursos en el contexto de la web combinable. En la web actual, las tecnologías de combinación de aplicaciones permiten a los desarrolladores reutilizar servicios y contenidos para construir nuevas aplicaciones web. Pese a todo, los desarrolladores afrontan un problema de saturación de información a la hora de buscar servicios o recursos apropiados para su combinación. Para contribuir a la solución de este problema, se propone un marco de trabajo para el descubrimiento de servicios y recursos. En este marco, se definen tres capas sobre las que se realiza descubrimiento a nivel de contenido, servicio y agente. El nivel de contenido involucra a la información disponible en recursos web. La web sigue el estilo arquitectónico Representational Stateless Transfer (REST), en el que los recursos son devueltos como representaciones por parte de los servidores a los clientes. Estas representaciones normalmente emplean el lenguaje de marcado HyperText Markup Language (HTML), que, unido al estándar Content Style Sheets (CSS), describe el marcado empleado para mostrar representaciones en un navegador web. Aunque el uso de estándares de la web semántica como Resource Description Framework (RDF) hace apta esta arquitectura para su uso por procesos automatizados, estos estándares no son empleados en muchas ocasiones, por lo que cualquier automatización debe basarse en el procesado del marcado HTML. Este proceso, normalmente conocido como Screen Scraping en la literatura, es el descubrimiento de contenidos en el marco de trabajo propuesto. En este nivel, un conjunto de reglas de descubrimiento indican cómo los diferentes datos en las representaciones de recursos se corresponden con entidades semánticas. Al procesar estas reglas sobre recursos web, pueden obtenerse contenidos descritos semánticamente. El nivel de servicio involucra las operaciones que pueden ser llevadas a cabo en la web. Actualmente, los usuarios de la web pueden realizar diversas tareas como búsqueda, blogging, comercio electrónico o redes sociales. Para describir los posibles servicios en arquitecturas REST, se propone en este nivel una metodología de alto nivel para descubrimiento de servicios orientada a funcionalidades. Este marco de descubrimiento ligero permite definir reglas de descubrimiento de servicios para identificar operaciones en interacciones con recursos REST. Este descubrimiento es por tanto llevado a cabo al aplicar las reglas de descubrimiento sobre contenidos descubiertos en interacciones REST, en un nuevo procedimiento llamado sondeo de servicios. Además, el descubrimiento de servicios puede ser llevado a cabo mediante el modelado de servicios como contenidos. Es decir, mediante la recuperación de documentación de Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) y listas de APIs en registros de servicios como ProgrammableWeb. Para ello, se ha definido un modelo unificado de componentes combinables para Mashup-Driven Development (MDD) tras el análisis de repositorios de servicios de la web. El nivel de agente involucra la orquestación del descubrimiento de servicios y contenidos. En este nivel, las reglas de nivel de agente permiten especificar comportamientos para el rastreo y ejecución de servicios, lo que permite la consecución de metas de mayor nivel. Las reglas de los agentes son planes que permiten la introspección sobre los datos y servicios descubiertos, así como sobre el conocimiento presente en las reglas de descubrimiento de servicios y contenidos para anticipar contenidos y servicios por encontrar en recursos específicos de la web. Mediante la definición de planes, un agente puede ser configurado para descubrir recursos específicos. El marco de descubrimiento ha sido evaluado sobre diferentes escenarios, cada uno cubriendo distintos niveles del marco. El proyecto Contenidos a la Carta trata de la combinación de noticias de periódicos digitales, y en él el framework se ha empleado para el descubrimiento y extracción de noticias de la web. De manera análoga, en los proyectos Resulta y VulneraNET se ha llevado a cabo un descubrimiento de ideas y de conocimientos de seguridad, respectivamente. El nivel de servicio se cubre en el proyecto OMELETTE, en el que componentes combinables como servicios y widgets se descubren en repositorios de componentes de la web. El nivel de agente se aplica al rastreo de servicios y noticias en estos escenarios, mostrando cómo la descripción semántica de reglas y datos extraídos permiten proporcionar comportamientos complejos y orquestaciones de tareas en la web. Las principales contribuciones de la tesis son el marco de trabajo unificado para descubrimiento, que permite configurar agentes para realizar tareas automatizadas. Además, una ontología de extracción ha sido definida para la construcción de correspondencias y extraer información de recursos web. Asimismo, un algoritmo para la inducción de reglas de lógica de primer orden se ha definido para la construcción y el mantenimiento de estas correspondencias a partir de la información visual de recursos web. Adicionalmente, se ha definido un modelo común y unificado para el descubrimiento de servicios que permite la compartición de descripciones de servicios. Como trabajos futuros se considera la extensión del sondeo de servicios, clasificación de recursos, extensión de la ontología de extracción y la construcción de una base de reglas de descubrimiento.

This document presents an innovative, formal educational initiative that is aimed at enhancing the development of engineering students’ specific competences when studying Project Management (PM) subject. The framework of the experience combines (1) theoretical concepts, (2) the development of a real-case project carried out by multidisciplinary groups of three different universities, (3) the use of software web 2.0 tools and (4) group and individual assignments of students that play different roles (project managers and team members). Under this scenario, the study focuses on monitoring the communication competence in the ever growing PM virtual environment. Factors such as corporal language, technical means, stage, and PM specific vocabulary among others have been considered in order to assess the students’ performance on this issue. As a main contribution, the paper introduces an ad-hoc rubric that, based on previous investigations, has been adapted and tested for the first time to this new and specific context. Additionally, the research conducted has provided some interesting findings that suggest further actions to improve and better define future rubrics, oriented to communication or even other competences. As specific PM subject concerns, it has been detected that students playing the role of Project Managers strengthen their competences more than those ones that play the role of Team Members. It has also been detected that students have more difficulty assimilating concepts related to risk and quality management. However those concepts related with scope, time or cost areas of knowledge have been better assimilated by the students.

With the success of Web 2.0 we are witnessing a growing number of services and APIs exposed by Telecom, IT and content providers. Targeting the Web community and, in particular, Web application developers, service providers expose capabilities of their infrastructures and applications in order to open new markets and to reach new customer groups. However, due to the complexity of the underlying technologies, the last step, i.e., the consumption and integration of the offered services, is a non-trivial and time-consuming task that is still a prerogative of expert developers. Although many approaches to lower the entry barriers for end users exist, little success has been achieved so far. In this paper, we introduce the OMELETTE project and show how it addresses end-user-oriented telco mashup development. We present the goals of the project, describe its contributions, summarize current results, and describe current and future work.

La presente Tesis analiza las posibilidades que ofrecen en la actualidad las tecnologías del habla para la detección de patologías clínicas asociadas a la vía aérea superior. El estudio del habla que tradicionalmente cubre tanto la producción como el proceso de transformación del mensaje y las señales involucradas, desde el emisor hasta alcanzar al receptor, ofrece una vía de estudio alternativa para estas patologías. El hecho de que la señal emitida no solo contiene este mensaje, sino también información acerca del locutor, ha motivado el desarrollo de sistemas orientados a la identificación y verificación de la identidad de los locutores. Estos trabajos han recibido recientemente un nuevo impulso, orientándose tanto hacia la caracterización de rasgos que son comunes a varios locutores, como a las diferencias existentes entre grabaciones de un mismo locutor. Los primeros resultan especialmente relevantes para esta Tesis dado que estos rasgos podrían evidenciar la presencia de características relacionadas con una cierta condición común a varios locutores, independiente de su identidad. Tal es el caso que se enfrenta en esta Tesis, donde los rasgos identificados se relacionarían con una de la patología particular y directamente vinculada con el sistema de físico de conformación del habla. El caso del Síndrome de Apneas Hipopneas durante el Sueno (SAHS) resulta paradigmático. Se trata de una patología con una elevada prevalencia mundo, que aumenta con la edad. Los pacientes de esta patología experimentan episodios de cese involuntario de la respiración durante el sueño, que se prolongan durante varios segundos y que se reproducen a lo largo de la noche impidiendo el correcto descanso. En el caso de la apnea obstructiva, estos episodios se deben a la imposibilidad de mantener un camino abierto a través de la vía aérea, de forma que el flujo de aire se ve interrumpido. En la actualidad, el diagnostico de estos pacientes se realiza a través de un estudio polisomnográfico, que se centra en el análisis de los episodios de apnea durante el sueño, requiriendo que el paciente permanezca en el hospital durante una noche. La complejidad y el elevado coste de estos procedimientos, unidos a las crecientes listas de espera, han evidenciado la necesidad de contar con técnicas rápidas de detección, que si bien podrían no obtener tasas tan elevadas, permitirían reorganizar las listas de espera en función del grado de severidad de la patología en cada paciente. Entre otros, los sistemas de diagnostico por imagen, así como la caracterización antropométrica de los pacientes, han evidenciado la existencia de patrones anatómicos que tendrían influencia directa sobre el habla. Los trabajos dedicados al estudio del SAHS en lo relativo a como esta afecta al habla han sido escasos y algunos de ellos incluso contradictorios. Sin embargo, desde finales de la década de 1980 se conoce la existencia de patrones específicos relativos a la articulación, la fonación y la resonancia. Sin embargo, su descripción resultaba difícilmente aprovechable a través de un sistema de reconocimiento automático, pero apuntaba la existencia de un nexo entre voz y SAHS. En los últimos anos las técnicas de procesado automático han permitido el desarrollo de sistemas automáticos que ya son capaces de identificar diferencias significativas en el habla de los pacientes del SAHS, y que los distinguen de los locutores sanos. Por contra, poco se conoce acerca de la conexión entre estos nuevos resultados, los sé que habían obtenido en el pasado y la patogénesis del SAHS. Esta Tesis continua la labor desarrollada en este ámbito considerando específicamente: el estudio de la forma en que el SAHS afecta el habla de los pacientes, la mejora en las tasas de clasificación automática y la combinación de la información obtenida con los predictores utilizados por los especialistas clínicos en sus evaluaciones preliminares. Las dos primeras tareas plantean problemas simbióticos, pero diferentes. Mientras el estudio de la conexión entre el SAHS y el habla requiere de modelos acotados que puedan ser interpretados con facilidad, los sistemas de reconocimiento se sirven de un elevado número de dimensiones para la caracterización y posterior identificación de patrones. Así, la primera tarea debe permitirnos avanzar en la segunda, al igual que la incorporación de los predictores utilizados por los especialistas clínicos. La Tesis aborda el estudio tanto del habla continua como del habla sostenida, con el fin de aprovechar las sinergias y diferencias existentes entre ambas. En el análisis del habla continua se tomo como punto de partida un esquema que ya fue evaluado con anterioridad, y sobre el cual se ha tratado la evaluación y optimización de la representación del habla, así como la caracterización de los patrones específicos asociados al SAHS. Ello ha evidenciado la conexión entre el SAHS y los elementos fundamentales de la señal de voz: los formantes. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que el éxito de estos sistemas se debe, fundamentalmente, a la capacidad de estas representaciones para describir dichas componentes, obviando las dimensiones ruidosas o con poca capacidad discriminativa. El esquema resultante ofrece una tasa de error por debajo del 18%, sirviéndose de clasificadores notablemente menos complejos que los descritos en el estado del arte y de una única grabación de voz de corta duración. En relación a la conexión entre el SAHS y los patrones observados, fue necesario considerar las diferencias inter- e intra-grupo, centrándonos en la articulación característica del locutor, sustituyendo los complejos modelos de clasificación por el estudio de los promedios espectrales. El resultado apunta con claridad hacia ciertas regiones del eje de frecuencias, sugiriendo la existencia de un estrechamiento sistemático en la sección del tracto en la región de la orofaringe, ya prevista en la patogénesis de este síndrome. En cuanto al habla sostenida, se han reproducido los estudios realizados sobre el habla continua en grabaciones de la vocal /a/ sostenida. Los resultados son cualitativamente análogos a los anteriores, si bien en este caso las tasas de clasificación resultan ser más bajas. Con el objetivo de identificar el sentido de este resultado se reprodujo el estudio de los promedios espectrales y de la variabilidad inter e intra-grupo. Ambos estudios mostraron importantes diferencias con los anteriores que podrían explicar estos resultados. Sin embargo, el habla sostenida ofrece otras oportunidades al establecer un entorno controlado para el estudio de la fonación, que también había sido identificada como una fuente de información para la detección del SAHS. De su estudio se pudo observar que, en el conjunto de datos disponibles, no existen variaciones que pudieran asociarse fácilmente con la fonación. Únicamente aquellas dimensiones que describen la distribución de energía a lo largo del eje de frecuencia evidenciaron diferencias significativas, apuntando, una vez más, en la dirección de las resonancias espectrales. Analizados los resultados anteriores, la Tesis afronta la fusión de ambas fuentes de información en un único sistema de clasificación. Con ello es posible mejorar las tasas de clasificación, bajo la hipótesis de que la información presente en el habla continua y el habla sostenida es fundamentalmente distinta. Esta tarea se realizo a través de un sencillo esquema de fusión que obtuvo un 88.6% de aciertos en clasificación (tasa de error del 11.4%), lo que representa una mejora significativa respecto al estado del arte. Finalmente, la combinación de este clasificador con los predictores utilizados por los especialistas clínicos ofreció una tasa del 91.3% (tasa de error de 8.7%), que se encuentra dentro del margen ofrecido por esquemas más costosos e intrusivos, y que a diferencia del propuesto, no pueden ser utilizados en la evaluación previa de los pacientes. Con todo, la Tesis ofrece una visión clara sobre la relación entre el SAHS y el habla, evidenciando el grado de madurez alcanzado por la tecnología del habla en la caracterización y detección del SAHS, poniendo de manifiesto que su uso para la evaluación de los pacientes ya sería posible, y dejando la puerta abierta a futuras investigaciones que continúen el trabajo aquí iniciado. ABSTRACT This Thesis explores the potential of speech technologies for the detection of clinical disorders connected to the upper airway. The study of speech traditionally covers both the production process and post processing of the signals involved, from the speaker up to the listener, offering an alternative path to study these pathologies. The fact that utterances embed not just the encoded message but also information about the speaker, has motivated the development of automatic systems oriented to the identification and verificaton the speaker’s identity. These have recently been boosted and reoriented either towards the characterization of traits that are common to several speakers, or to the differences between records of the same speaker collected under different conditions. The first are particularly relevant to this Thesis as these patterns could reveal the presence of features that are related to a common condition shared among different speakers, regardless of their identity. Such is the case faced in this Thesis, where the traits identified would relate to a particular pathology, directly connected to the speech production system. The Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome (OSA) is a paradigmatic case for analysis. It is a disorder with high prevalence among adults and affecting a larger number of them as they grow older. Patients suffering from this disorder experience episodes of involuntary cessation of breath during sleep that may last a few seconds and reproduce throughout the night, preventing proper rest. In the case of obstructive apnea, these episodes are related to the collapse of the pharynx, which interrupts the air flow. Currently, OSA diagnosis is done through a polysomnographic study, which focuses on the analysis of apnea episodes during sleep, requiring the patient to stay at the hospital for the whole night. The complexity and high cost of the procedures involved, combined with the waiting lists, have evidenced the need for screening techniques, which perhaps would not achieve outstanding performance rates but would allow clinicians to reorganize these lists ranking patients according to the severity of their condition. Among others, imaging diagnosis and anthropometric characterization of patients have evidenced the existence of anatomical patterns related to OSA that have direct influence on speech. Contributions devoted to the study of how this disorder affects scpeech are scarce and somehow contradictory. However, since the late 1980s the existence of specific patterns related to articulation, phonation and resonance is known. By that time these descriptions were virtually useless when coming to the development of an automatic system, but pointed out the existence of a link between speech and OSA. In recent years automatic processing techniques have evolved and are now able to identify significant differences in the speech of OSAS patients when compared to records from healthy subjects. Nevertheless, little is known about the connection between these new results with those published in the past and the pathogenesis of the OSA syndrome. This Thesis is aimed to progress beyond the previous research done in this area by addressing: the study of how OSA affects patients’ speech, the enhancement of automatic OSA classification based on speech analysis, and its integration with the information embedded in the predictors generally used by clinicians in preliminary patients’ examination. The first two tasks, though may appear symbiotic at first, are quite different. While studying the connection between speech and OSA requires simple narrow models that can be easily interpreted, classification requires larger models including a large number dimensions for the characterization and posterior identification of the observed patterns. Anyhow, it is clear that any progress made in the first task should allow us to improve our performance on the second one, and that the incorporation of the predictors used by clinicians shall contribute in this same direction. The Thesis considers both continuous and sustained speech analysis, to exploit the synergies and differences between them. On continuous speech analysis, a conventional speech processing scheme, designed and evaluated before this Thesis, was taken as a baseline. Over this initial system several alternative representations of the speech information were proposed, optimized and tested to select those more suitable for the characterization of OSA-specific patterns. Evidences were found on the existence of a connection between OSA and the fundamental constituents of the speech: the formants. Experimental results proved that the success of the proposed solution is well explained by the ability of speech representations to describe these specific OSA-related components, ignoring the noisy ones as well those presenting low discrimination capabilities. The resulting scheme obtained a 18% error rate, on a classification scheme significantly less complex than those described in the literature and operating on a single speech record. Regarding the connection between OSA and the observed patterns, it was necessary to consider inter-and intra-group differences for this analysis, and to focus on the articulation, replacing the complex classification models by the long-term average spectra. Results clearly point to certain regions on the frequency axis, suggesting the existence of a systematic narrowing in the vocal tract section at the oropharynx. This was already described in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. Regarding sustained speech, similar experiments as those conducted on continuous speech were reproduced on sustained phonations of vowel / a /. Results were qualitatively similar to the previous ones, though in this case perfomance rates were found to be noticeably lower. Trying to derive further knowledge from this result, experiments on the long-term average spectra and intraand inter-group variability ratios were also reproduced on sustained speech records. Results on both experiments showed significant differences from the previous ones obtained from continuous speech which could explain the differences observed on peformance. However, sustained speech also provided the opportunity to study phonation within the controlled framework it provides. This was also identified in the literature as a source of information for the detection of OSA. In this study it was found that, for the available dataset, no sistematic differences related to phonation could be found between the two groups of speakers. Only those dimensions which relate energy distribution along the frequency axis provided significant differences, pointing once again towards the direction of resonant components. Once classification schemes on both continuous and sustained speech were developed, the Thesis addressed their combination into a single classification system. Under the assumption that the information in continuous and sustained speech is fundamentally different, it should be possible to successfully merge the two of them. This was tested through a simple fusion scheme which obtained a 88.6% correct classification (11.4% error rate), which represents a significant improvement over the state of the art. Finally, the combination of this classifier with the variables used by clinicians obtained a 91.3% accuracy (8.7% error rate). This is within the range of alternative, but costly and intrusive schemes, which unlike the one proposed can not be used in the preliminary assessment of patients’ condition. In the end, this Thesis has shed new light on the underlying connection between OSA and speech, and evidenced the degree of maturity reached by speech technology on OSA characterization and detection, leaving the door open for future research which shall continue in the multiple directions that have been pointed out and left as future work.

Knowledge modeling tools are software tools that follow a modeling approach to help developers in building a knowledge-based system. The purpose of this article is to show the advantages of using this type of tools in the development of complex knowledge-based decision support systems. In order to do so, the article describes the development of a system called SAIDA in the domain of hydrology with the help of the KSM modeling tool. SAIDA operates on real-time receiving data recorded by sensors (rainfall, water levels, flows, etc.). It follows a multi-agent architecture to interpret the data, predict the future behavior and recommend control actions. The system includes an advanced knowledge based architecture with multiple symbolic representation. KSM was especially useful to design and implement the complex knowledge based architecture in an efficient way.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the use of knowledge models to formulate general applications. First, the paper presents the recent evolution of the software field where increasing attention is paid to conceptual modeling. Then, the current state of knowledge modeling techniques is described where increased reliability is available through the modern knowledge acquisition techniques and supporting tools. The KSM (Knowledge Structure Manager) tool is described next. First, the concept of knowledge area is introduced as a building block where methods to perform a collection of tasks are included together with the bodies of knowledge providing the basic methods to perform the basic tasks. Then, the CONCEL language to define vocabularies of domains and the LINK language for methods formulation are introduced. Finally, the object oriented implementation of a knowledge area is described and a general methodology for application design and maintenance supported by KSM is proposed. To illustrate the concepts and methods, an example of system for intelligent traffic management in a road network is described. This example is followed by a proposal of generalization for reuse of the resulting architecture. Finally, some concluding comments are proposed about the feasibility of using the knowledge modeling tools and methods for general application design.

This paper describes a particular knowledge acquisition tool for the construction and maintenance of the knowledge model of an intelligent system for emergency management in the field of hydrology. This tool has been developed following an innovative approach directed to end-users non familiarized in computer oriented terminology. According to this approach, the tool is conceived as a document processor specialized in a particular domain (hydrology) in such a way that the whole knowledge model is viewed by the user as an electronic document. The paper first describes the characteristics of the knowledge model of the intelligent system and summarizes the problems that we found during the development and maintenance of such type of model. Then, the paper describes the KATS tool, a software application that we have designed to help in this task to be used by users who are not experts in computer programming. Finally, the paper shows a comparison between KATS and other approaches for knowledge acquisition.

We present a theoretical framework and a case study for reusing the same conceptual and computational methodology for both temporal abstraction and linear (unidimensional) space abstraction, in a domain (evaluation of traffic-control actions) significantly different from the one (clinical medicine) in which the method was originally used. The method, known as knowledge-based temporal abstraction, abstracts high-level concepts and patterns from time-stamped raw data using a formal theory of domain-specific temporal-abstraction knowledge. We applied this method, originally used to interpret time-oriented clinical data, to the domain of traffic control, in which the monitoring task requires linear pattern matching along both space and time. First, we reused the method for creation of unidimensional spatial abstractions over highways, given sensor measurements along each highway measured at the same time point. Second, we reused the method to create temporal abstractions of the traffic behavior, for the same space segments, but during consecutive time points. We defined the corresponding temporal-abstraction and spatial-abstraction domain-specific knowledge. Our results suggest that (1) the knowledge-based temporal-abstraction method is reusable over time and unidimensional space as well as over significantly different domains; (2) the method can be generalized into a knowledge-based linear-abstraction method, which solves tasks requiring abstraction of data along any linear distance measure; and (3) a spatiotemporal-abstraction method can be assembled from two copies of the generalized method and a spatial-decomposition mechanism, and is applicable to tasks requiring abstraction of time-oriented data into meaningful spatiotemporal patterns over a linear, decomposable space, such as traffic over a set of highways.

El proceso de cambio de una sociedad industrial a una sociedad del conocimiento, que experimenta el mundo globalizado en el siglo XXI, induce a las empresas y organizaciones a desarrollar ventajas competitivas y sostenibles basadas en sus activos intangibles, entre los cuales destacan los sistemas de gestión en general y los sistemas de gestión de la calidad (SGC) en particular. Las organizaciones dedicadas a la producción de petróleo están influenciadas por dicha tendencia. El petróleo es un recurso natural con reservas limitadas, cuya producción y consumo ha crecido progresivamente, aportando la mayor cuota (35 %) del total de la energía que se consume en el mundo contemporáneo, aporte que se mantendrá hasta el año 2035, según las previsiones más conservadoras. Por tanto, se hace necesario desarrollar modelos de producción innovadores, que contribuyan a la mejora del factor de recobro de los yacimientos y de la vida útil de los mismos, al tiempo que satisfagan los requerimientos de producción y consumo diarios de los exigentes mercados globales. El objeto de esta investigación es el desarrollo de un modelo de gestión de la calidad y su efecto en el desempeño organizacional, a través del efecto mediador de los constructos satisfacción del cliente interno y gestión del conocimiento en la producción de petróleo. Esta investigación de carácter explicativo, no experimental, transeccional y ex-postfacto, se realizó en la región petrolífera del lago de Maracaibo, al occidente de Venezuela, la cual tiene más de 70 años en producción y cuenta con yacimientos maduros. La población objeto de estudio fue de 369 trabajadores petroleros, quienes participaron en las mesas técnicas de la calidad, durante los meses de mayo y julio del año 2012, los cuales en su mayoría están en proceso de formación como analistas, asesores y auditores de los SGC. La técnica de muestreo aplicada fue de tipo aleatorio simple, con una muestra de 252 individuos. A la misma se le aplicó un cuestionario diseñado ad hoc, el cual fue validado por las técnicas de juicio de expertos y prueba piloto. El procedimiento de investigación se realizó a través de una secuencia, que incluyó la elaboración de un modelo teórico, basado en la revisión del estado del arte; un modelo factorial, sobre la base del análisis factorial de los datos de la encuesta; un modelo de regresión lineal, elaborado a través del método de regresión lineal simple y múltiple; un modelo de análisis de sendero, realizado con el software Amos 20 SPSS y finalmente, un modelo informático, realizado con el simulador Vensim PLE v.6.2. Los resultados obtenidos indican que el modelo teórico se transformó en un modelo empírico, en el cual, la variable independiente fue el SGC, la variable mediadora fue la integración de las dimensiones eliminación de la no conformidad, satisfacción del cliente interno y aprendizaje organizacional (ENCSCIAO) y la variable respuesta la integración de las dimensiones desempeño organizacional y aprendizaje organizacional (DOOA). Se verificó el efecto mediador del ENSCIAO sobre la relación SGC-DOOA con una bondad del ajuste, del 42,65%. En el modelo de regresión múltiple se encontró que las variables determinantes son eliminación de la no conformidad (ENC), conocimiento adquirido (CA) y conocimiento espontáneo (CE), lo cual fue corroborado con el modelo de análisis de sendero. El modelo informático se desarrolló empleando datos aproximados de una unidad de producción tipo, generándose cuatro escenarios; siendo el más favorable, aquel en el cual se aplicaba el SGC y variables relacionadas, reduciendo la desviación de la producción, incrementando el factor de recobro y ampliando la vida útil del yacimiento. Se concluye que la aplicación del SGC y constructos relacionados favorece el desempeño y la producción de las unidades de explotación de yacimientos petrolíferos maduros. Los principales aportes de la tesis son la obtención de un modelo de gestión de la producción de petróleo en yacimientos maduros, basado en los SGC. Asimismo, el desarrollo de un concepto de gestión de la calidad asociado a la reducción de la desviación de la producción petrolífera anual, al incremento del factor de recobro y al aumento de la vida útil del yacimiento. Las futuras líneas de investigación están orientadas a la aplicación del modelo en contextos reales y específicos, para medir su impacto y realizar los ajustes pertinentes. ABSTRACT The process of change from an industrial society to a knowledge-based society, which undergoes the globalized world in the twenty-first century, induces companies and organizations to develop a sustainable and competitive advantages based on its intangible assets, among which are noteworthy the management systems in general and particularly the quality management systems (QMS). Organizations engaged in oil production are influenced by said trend. Oil is a natural resource with limited reserves, where production and consumption has grown progressively, providing the largest share (35%) of the total energy consumed in the contemporary world, a contribution that will remain until the year 2035 according to the more conservative trust estimations. Therefore, it becomes necessary to develop innovative production models which contribute with the improvement of reservoirs´ recovery factor and the lifetime thereof, while meeting the production requirements and daily consumption of demanding global markets. The aim of this research is to develop a model of quality management and its effect on organizational performance through the mediator effect of the constructs, internal customer satisfaction and knowledge management in oil production. This research of explanatory nature, not experimental, transactional and expos-facto was carried out in the oil-region of Maracaibo Lake located to the west of Venezuela, which has more than 70 years in continuous production and has mature reservoirs. The population under study was 369 oil workers who participated in the technical quality workshops, during the months of May and July of 2012, the majority of which were in the process of training as analysts, consultants and auditors of the QMS. The sampling technique applied was simple random type. To a sample of 252 individuals of the population it was applied an ad hoc designed questionnaire, which was validated by the techniques of expert judgment and pilot test. The research procedure was performed through a sequence, which included the elaboration of a theoretical model, based on the review of the state of the art; a factorial model with based on factorial analysis of the survey data; a linear regression model, developed through the method of simple and multiple linear regression; a structural equation model, made with software °Amos 20 SPSS° and finally, a computer model, performed with the simulator Vensim PLE v.6.2. The results indicate that the theoretical model was transformed into an empirical model, in which the independent variable was the QMS, the mediator variable was the integration of the dimensions: elimination of non-conformity, internal customer satisfaction and organizational learning (ENCSCIAO) and the response variable the integration of the dimensions, organizational performance and learning organizational (DOOA). ENSCIAO´s mediator effect on the relation QMS-DOOA was verified with a goodness of fit of 42,65%. In the multiple regression model was found to be the determining variables are elimination of nonconformity (ENC), knowledge acquired (CA) and spontaneous knowledge (EC), which was verified with the structural equation model. The computer model was developed based on approximate data of an oil production unit type, creating four (04) scenarios; being the most favorable, that one which it was applied the QMS and related variables, reducing the production deviation, increasing the recovery factor and extending the lifetime of the reservoir. It is concluded that QMS implementation powered with the related constructs, favors performance and production of mature oilfield of exploitation reservoirs units. The main contributions of this thesis are obtaining a management model for oil production in mature oilfields, based on QMS. In addition, development of a concept of quality associated to reduce the annual oil production deviation, increase the recovery factor and increase oilfield lifetime. Future lines of research are oriented to the implementation of this model in real and specific contexts to measure its impact and make the necessary adjustments that might take place.
