The alignment of collective goals and individual behavior has been extensively studied by economists under a principal-agent framework. Two main solutions have been presented: explicit incentive contracts and monitoring. These solutions correspond to changes in the objective situation faced by individuals. However, an extensive literature in social psychology provides evidence that behavior is influenced, not only by situational constraints, but also by attitudes. Therefore, an important aspect of organization is to choose the structures and procedures that best contribute to the dissemination of the desired attitudes throughout the organization. This paper studies how the initial configuration of attitudes and the size of the organization affect the optimal organizational structure and the timing of information flows when the objective is to align the members' attitudes. We identify and characterize three factors that affect the optimal organizational structures and procedures and the degree of alignment of attitudes: (1) clustering effects; (2) member cross-influence effects; and (3) leader cross-influence effects.

We study a two sector endogenous growth model with environmental quality with two goods and two factors of production, one clean and one dirty. Technological change creates clean or dirty innovations. We compare the laissez-faire equilibrium and the social optimum and study first- and second-best policies. Optimal policy encourages research toward clean technologies. In a second-best world, we claim that a portfolio that includes a tax on the polluting good combined with optimal innovation subsidy policies is less costly than increasing the price of the polluting good alone. Moreover, a discriminating innovation subsidy policy is preferable to a non-discriminating one.

Due to the decline of the heavy industries in the Ruhr region, the area has to reinvent itself. The orientation towards service industries proves to be a difficult task for the district and its population. This paper examines the challenges, problems and potentials of the Ruhr region against the backdrop of its economical history out of a sociological perspective. Thereby the economical situation and its outcome towards the population stand in the foreground of the paper.

Climate change is emerging as one of the major threats to natural communities of the world’s ecosystems; and biodiversity hotspots, such as Madeira Island, might face a challenging future in the conservation of endangered land snails’ species. With this thesis, progresses have been made in order to properly understand the impact of climate on these vulnerable taxa; and species distribution models coupled with GIS and climate change scenarios have become crucial to understand the relations between species distribution and environmental conditions, identifying threats and determining biodiversity vulnerability. With the use of MaxEnt, important changes in the species suitable areas were obtained. Laurel forest species, highly dependent on precipitation and relative humidity, may face major losses on their future suitable areas, leading to the possible extinction of several endangered species, such as Leiostyla heterodon. Despite the complexity of the biological systems, the intrinsic uncertainty of species distribution models and the lack of information about land snails’ functional traits, this analysis contributed to a pioneer study on the impacts of climate change on endemic species of Madeira Island. The future inclusion of predictions of the effect of climate change on species distribution as part of IUCN assessments could contribute to species prioritizing, promoting specific management actions and maximizing conservation investment.

Several studies have demonstrated that although the structure of the adult and larval zebrafish caudal fin is different, there are similarities at the cellular and molecular level that turn larval zebrafish fin fold a useful model to study the basic principles of regeneration. In this process, while the essential role for Hedgehog (Hh) signaling is well established in the adult zebrafish caudal fin system, its involvement in juvenile tissue regeneration is still unknown. The aim of this Master thesis was therefore to evaluate the contribution of the Hh signaling pathway to the larval zebrafish fin fold regeneration process. Accordingly, we analyzed the expression of several Hh signaling components through in situ hybridization. Here, we showed that several of these genes are effectively expressed in the larval regenerating fin tissue, suggesting a role for Hh signaling also during larval regeneration. However, divergence in the regulation of few Hh signaling components appears to exist between the adult and larval zebrafish fin regeneration processes. Nevertheless, similarly to adult caudal fin regeneration, when Hh signaling was blocked, by using cyclopamine, the larval fin fold regenerative outgrowth is severely impaired. Since larval zebrafish fin fold is ciliated, and primary cilia are closely related to Hh signaling regulation in vertebrate systems, we further addressed the role of primary cilia during larval fin fold regeneration process. To this end, we used the zebrafish iguana mutant, in which primary cilia are not formed, to study the modulation of Hh signaling expression during larval fin fold regeneration in the absence of primary cilia. Here, we found that several genes were expressed with a delay, coincident with the delay in the mutant fin fold regeneration observed in previous work. We show that Hh signaling in the fin fold is crucial to promote cell proliferation. When Hh signaling is blocked using cyclopamine there is a strong blockage of cell proliferation and regeneration is also blocked. Surprisingly, in iguana mutants where Hh signaling is impaired but not totally blocked, cell proliferation is not detected but regeneration still occurs. This raises the question about the requirement of cell proliferation in larvae fin fold regeneration. By blocking the cell cycle using aphidicolin we demonstrate that cell proliferation is not necessary for zebrafish larvae fin fold regeneration.

The recent massive inflow of refugees to the European Union (EU) raises a number of unanswered questions on the economic impact of this phenomenon. To examine these questions, we constructed an overlapping-generations model that describes the evolution of the skill premium and of the welfare benefit level in relevant European countries, in the aftermath of an inflow of asylum-seekers. In our simulation, relative wages of skilled workers increase between 8% and 11% in the period of the inflow; their subsequent time path is dependent on the initial skill premium. The entry of migrants creates a fiscal surplus of about 8%, which can finance higher welfare benefits in the subsequent periods. These effects are weaker in a scenario where refugees do not fully integrate into the labor market.

Nowadays, organizations face a constant need for adaptability, increasing the importance of change management. Our study focuses of how empowering leadership influences intentions to resist future changes, mediated by the effects of psychological and structural empowerment. From the responses of the two questionnaires (N1=230; Ntf=113), we found that empowering leadership fosters psychological and structural empowerment. Structural empowerment was the main driver in reducing intentions to resist future change when an employee has high organization-based self-esteem. Our findings add to the literature by examining how we can anticipate and manage change under an empowering context, building on social exchange and uncertainty reduction theories
