Titanium nitride films of a thickness of similar to 1.5 mu m were deposited on amorphous and crystalline substrates by DC reactive magnetron sputtering at ambient temperature with 100% nitrogen in the sputter gas. The growth of nanostructured, i.e. crystalline nano-grain sized, films at ambient temperature is demonstrated. The microstructure of the films grown on crystalline substrates reveals a larger grain size/crystallite size than that of the films deposited on amorphous substrates. Specular reflectance measurements on films deposited on different substrates indicate that the position of the Ti-N 2s band at 2.33 eV is substrate-dependent, indicating substrate-mediated stoichiometry. This clearly demonstrates that not only structure and microstructure, but also chemical composition of the films is substrate-influenced. The films deposited on amorphous substrates display lower hardness and modulus values than the films deposited on crystalline substrates, with the highest value of hardness being 19 GPa on a lanthanum aluminate substrate. Cardiac arrhythmias, such as ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF), are among the leading causes of death in the industrialized world. These are associated with the formation of spiral and scroll waves of electrical activation in cardiac tissue; single spiral and scroll waves are believed to be associated with VT whereas their turbulent analogs are associated with VF. Thus, the study of these waves is an important biophysical problem. We present a systematic study of the combined effects of muscle-fiber rotation and inhomogeneities on scroll-wave dynamics in the TNNP (ten Tusscher Noble Noble Panfilov) model for human cardiac tissue. In particular, we use the three-dimensional TNNP model with fiber rotation and consider both conduction and ionic inhomogeneities. We find that, in addition to displaying a sensitive dependence on the positions, sizes, and types of inhomogeneities, scroll-wave dynamics also depends delicately upon the degree of fiber rotation. We find that the tendency of scroll waves to anchor to cylindrical conduction inhomogeneities increases with the radius of the inhomogeneity. Furthermore, the filament of the scroll wave can exhibit drift or meandering, transmural bending, twisting, and break-up. If the scroll-wave filament exhibits weak meandering, then there is a fine balance between the anchoring of this wave at the inhomogeneity and a disruption of wave-pinning by fiber rotation. If this filament displays strong meandering, then again the anchoring is suppressed by fiber rotation; also, the scroll wave can be eliminated from most of the layers only to be regenerated by a seed wave. Ionic inhomogeneities can also lead to an anchoring of the scroll wave; scroll waves can now enter the region inside an ionic inhomogeneity and can display a coexistence of spatiotemporal chaos and quasi-periodic behavior in different parts of the simulation domain. We discuss the experimental implications of our study.

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) techniques, by far, had been applied to LAN problems by many investigators, An analytical study of well known algorithms for generation of Orthogonal codes used in FO-CDMA systems like those for prime, quasi-Prime, Optical Orthogonal and Matrix codes has been presented, Algorithms for OOCs like Greedy/Modified Greedy/Accelerated Greedy algorithms are implemented. Many speed-up enhancements. for these algorithms are suggested. A novel Synthetic Algorithm based on Difference Sets (SADS) is also proposed. Investigations are made to vectorise/parallelise SADS to implement the source code on parallel machines. A new matrix for code families of OOCs with different seed code-words but having the same (n,w,lambda) set is formulated.

The dependence of optical constants, structure and composition of titania thin films on the process parameters has been investigated. Films were deposited using both reactive electron beam evaporation and ion Assisted Deposition(IAD). If has been observed that the refractive index of IAD films is higher than that for the reactively deposited films, without much difference in the extinction coefficient. Electron paramagnetic resonance has been used to estimate qualitatively the presence of non-stoichiometry in the films. It has been found that these spectra correlate very well the optical behaviour of the films. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the neutral oxygen deposited films were stress free, while the IAD films showed tensile stress. The lattice parameters showed anisotropic change with ion beam parameters.

New composition gradient solid electrolytes have been designed for application in high temperature solid-state galvanic sensors and in thermodynamic measurements. The functionally gradient electrolyte consists of a solid solution between two or more ionic conductors with a common ion and gradual variation in composition of the other ionic species. Unequal rates of migration of the ions, caused by the presence of the concentration gradient, may result in the development of space charge, manifesting as diffusion potential. Presented is a theoretical analysis of the EMF of cells incorporating gradient solid electrolytes. An analytical expression is derived for diffusion potential, using the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, for different types of concentration gradients and boundary conditions at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The diffusion potential of an isothermal cell incorporating these gradient electrolytes becomes negligible if there is only one mobile ion and the transport numbers of the relatively immobile polyionic species and electrons approach zero. The analysis of the EMF of a nonisothermal cell incorporating a composition gradient solid electrolyte indicates that the cell EMF can be expressed in terms of the thermodynamic parameters at the electrodes and the Seebeck coefficient of the gradient electrolyte under standard conditions when the transport number of one of the ions approaches unity.

We present a comprehensive study of magnetoresistance (MR) of the crystalline pseudobinary ?-phase Fe alloy series FexNi80-xCr20 (50?x?66). This alloy series shows exotic magnetic phases as the composition (x) is varied. It has a critical composition for ferromagnetism at x=xc?5960. MR was measured in the temperature range 1.7110 K and up to a field of 7 T. The observed MR was small and the change was ?1%. The temperature dependence of MR was found to contain a positive and a negative contribution. The positive term was found to be ?H2 and it dominates at high field and high temperatures. We explain this as a manifestation of Kohlers rule. The negative MR was found to have a quadratic dependence on magnetization M. The magnitude of the negative MR reaches a maximum as x?xc.

A reversible pressure-induced phase transition in lanthanum nickel ferrate (LaNi0.5Fe0.5O3) manifests itself in the infrared spectrum of the transition metal-oxygen stretching (nu(TM-O)) modes by the emergence of new peaks at pressures greater than similar to 1.4 x 10(9) Pa. Analogies to this transition are made by considering charge transfer in dilanthanum cuprate (La2CuO4) and its modification by partial substitution of copper ions by chromium ions.

The relations between partial and integral properties of ternary solutions along composition trajectories suggested by Kohler, Colinet and Jacob, and along an arbitrary path are derived. The chemical potentials of the components are related to the slope of integral free energy by expressions involving the binary compositions generated by the intersections of the composition trajectory with the sides of the ternary triangle. Only along the Kohler composition trajectory it is possible to derive the integral free energy from the variation of the chemical potential of a single component with composition or vice versa. Along all other paths the differential of the integral free energy is related to two chemical potentials. The Gibbs-Duhem integration proposed by Darken for the ternary system uses the Kohler isogram. The relative merits of different limits for integration are discussed.

Equilibrium thermodynamic analysis has been applied to the low-pressure MOCVD process using manganese acetylacetonate as the precursor. ``CVD phase stability diagrams'' have been constructed separately for the processes carried out in argon and oxygen ambient, depicting the compositions of the resulting films as functions of CVD parameters. For the process conduced in argon ambient, the analysis predicts the simultaneous deposition of MnO and elemental carbon in 1: 3 molar proportion, over a range of temperatures. The analysis predicts also that, if CVD is carried out in oxygen ambient, even a very low flow of oxygen leads to the complete absence of carbon in the film deposited oxygen, with greater oxygen flow resulting in the simultaneous deposition of two different manganese oxides under certain conditions. The results of thermodynamic modeling have been verified quantitatively for low-pressure CVD conducted in argon ambient. Indeed, the large excess of carbon in the deposit is found to constitute a MnO/C nanocomposite, the associated cauliflower-like morphology making it a promising candidate for electrode material in supercapacitors. CVD carried out in oxygen flow, under specific conditions, leads to the deposition of more than one manganese oxide, as expected from thermodynamic analysis ( and forming an oxide-oxide nanocomposite). These results together demonstrate that thermodynamic analysis of the MOCVD process can be employed to synthesize thin films in a predictive manner, thus avoiding the inefficient trial-and-error method usually associated with MOCVD process development. The prospect of developing thin films of novel compositions and characteristics in a predictive manner, through the appropriate choice of CVD precursors and process conditions, emerges from the present work.

This paper presents an assessment of the flexural behavior of 15 fully/partially prestressed high strength concrete beams containing steel fibers investigated using three-dimensional nonlinear finite elemental analysis. The experimental results consisted of eight fully and seven partially prestressed beams, which were designed to be flexure dominant in the absence of fibers. The main parameters varied in the tests were: the levels of prestressing force (i.e, in partially prestressed beams 50% of the prestress was reduced with the introduction of two high strength deformed bars instead), fiber volume fractions (0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%), fiber location (full depth and partial depth over full length and half the depth over the shear span only). A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted using ANSYS 5.5 [Theory Reference Manual. In: Kohnke P, editor. Elements Reference Manual. 8th ed. September 1998] general purpose finite element software to study the flexural behavior of both fully and partially prestressed fiber reinforced concrete beams. Influence of fibers on the concrete failure surface and stress-strain response of high strength concrete and the nonlinear stress-strain curves of prestressing wire and deformed bar were considered in the present analysis. In the finite element model. tension stiffening and bond slip between concrete and reinforcement (fibers., prestressing wire, and conventional reinforcing steel bar) have also been considered explicitly. The fraction of the entire volume of the fiber present along the longitudinal axis of the prestressed beams alone has been modeled explicitly as it is expected that these fibers would contribute to the mobilization of forces required to sustain the applied loads across the crack interfaces through their bridging action. A comparison of results from both tests and analysis on all 15 specimens confirm that, inclusion of fibers over a partial depth in the tensile side of the prestressed flexural structural members was economical and led to considerable cost saving without sacrificing on the desired performance. However. beams having fibers over half the depth in only the shear span, did not show any increase in the ultimate load or deformational characteristics when compared to plain concrete beams. This study presents the results of an experimental and analytical comparison of the flexural behavior of a high-strength concrete specimen (no conventional reinforcement) with an average plain concrete cube strength of nearly 65 MPa and containing trough shape steel fibers. Trough shape steel fibers with a volume fraction ranging from 0 to 1.5% and having a constant aspect ratio of 80 have been used in this study. Increased toughness and a more ductile stress-strain response were observed with an increase in fiber content, when the fibers were distributed over the full/partial depth of the beam cross section. Based on the tests, a robust analytical procedure has been proposed to establish the required partial depth to contain fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) so as to obtain the flexural capacity of a member with FRC over the full depth. It is expected that this procedure will help designers in properly estimating the required partial depth of fibers in composite sections for specific structural applications. Empirical and mechanistic relations have also been proposed in this study to establish the load-deflection behavior of high-strength FRC.

Absorption due to immersion in aqueous media consisting of either saline or seawater or due to exposure to water vapor conditions and the attendant effect on the compressive properties of syntactic foam reinforced with E-glass fibers in the form of chopped strands were studied. Whereas the compressive strength decreased in samples exposed to water vapor, the saline or seawater immersed samples showed increase when compared to the dry sample. The decrease in strength in the vapor-exposed case is ascribed to higher absorption of water and to debonding and damaged features for interfaces. The enhancement of strength values for the samples immersed in saltish media is traced to the larger size of the chloride ion and resultant changes in the stress state around the fiber-bearing regions. Recourse to an analysis of scanning electron microscopic pictures of the compression-failed samples is taken to explain the observed trends.

We report here an experimental investigation for establishing and quantifying a link between the growth and decay characteristics of fiber Bragg gratings. One of the key aspects of our work is the determination of the defect energy distribution from the grating characteristics measured during their fabrication. We observe a strong correlation between the growth-based defect energy distribution and that obtained through accelerated aging experiments, paving the way for predicting the decay characteristics of fiber Bragg gratings from their growth data. Such a prediction is significant in simplifying the postfabrication steps required to enhance the thermal stability of fiber Bragg gratings. (c) 2011 Optical Society of America

The total solids of samples of ass's milk ranged from 7·80 to 9·10, the solids-not-fat from 7·14 to 8·50, and the fat from 0·54 to 0·71%. The nitrogen distribution in ass's milk is: casein 39·5, albumin 35·0, globulin 2·7 and non-protein nitrogen 22·8% of the total nitrogen. Ass's milk contains: casein 0·70, albumin 0·62 and globulin 0·07%. The total protein content is 1·39%. Ass's milk is therefore characterized by a low casein, a low globulin and a high albumin content. The non-protein nitrogen consists of amino nitrogen 8·1, urea nitrogen 24·3 and uric acid 0·7 mg./100 ml. of milk. The urea content is twice that present in cow's milk. The mean chloride and lactose contents of the milk samples are 0·037 and 6·1% respectively. The average calcium and phosphorus content of ass's milk are 0·081 and 0·059% respectively. Half the calcium is ionic, and half is in colloidal form. The phosphorus distribution is: total acid soluble 84·0, acid soluble organic 38·5, easily hydrolysable ester 27·4, inorganic 46·0, and colloidal inorganic 23·0 % of the total phosphorus. The ratio of CaO: P2O5 is 1:1. 46 % of the total phosphorus is in ester form; this is high when compared with only 12 % in cow's milk; most of the phosphoric ester forms soluble barium salts, which is a distinguishing feature of ass's milk. The total sulphur content is 15·8 mg./100 ml. The fat has a penetrating odour and is coloured orange-yellow. It has an iodine value of about 86, which is much higher than that for human milk fat. The Reichert (9·5) and Kirschner values (5·7) are low. In general, the composition of ass's milk resembles that of human rather than of cow's milk.
