Recently, age-related hippocampal (HP) volume loss could be associated with a decrease in general fluid intelligence (gF). In the present study we investigated whether and how extensive musical training modulates human HP volume and gF performance. Previously, some studies demonstrated positive effects of musical training on higher cognitive functions such as learning and memory, associated with neural adaptations beyond the auditory domain. In order to detect possible associations between musical training and gF, we bilaterally segmented the HP formation and assessed the individual gF performance of people with different levels of musical expertise. Multiple regression analyses revealed that HP volume predicts gF in musicians but not in nonmusicians; in particular, bilaterally enhanced HP volume is associated with increased gF exclusively in musically trained people (amateurs and experts). This result suggests that musical training facilitates the recruitment of cognitive resources, which are essential for gF and linked to HP functioning. Musical training, even at a moderate level of intensity, can thus be considered as a potential strategy to decelerate age-related effects of cognitive decline. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The main objective of the research is to link granular physics with the modelling of rock avalanches. Laboratory experiments consist to find a convenient granular material, i.e. grainsize and physical behaviour, and testing it on simple slope geometry. When the appropriate sliding material is selected, we attempted to model the debris avalanche and the spreading on a slope with different substratum to understand the relationship between the volume and the reach angle, i.e. angle of the line joining the top of the scar and the end of the deposit. For a better understanding of the mass spreading, the deposits are scanned with a laser scanner. Datasets are compared to see how the grain size and volume influence a debris avalanche. The relationship between the roughness and grainsize of the substratum shows that the spreading of the sliding mass is increased when the roughness of the substratum starts to be equivalent or greater than the grainsize of the flowing mass. The runout distance displays a more complex relationship, because a long runout distance implies that grains are less spread. This means that if the substratum is too rough the distance diminishes, as well if it is too smooth because the effect on the apparent friction decreases. Up to now our findings do not permit to validate any previous model (Melosh, 1987; Bagnold 1956).

In this paper, an extension of the multi-scale finite-volume (MSFV) method is devised, which allows to Simulate flow and transport in reservoirs with complex well configurations. The new framework fits nicely into the data Structure of the original MSFV method, and has the important property that large patches covering the whole well are not required. For each well. an additional degree of freedom is introduced. While the treatment of pressure-constraint wells is trivial (the well-bore reference pressure is explicitly specified), additional equations have to be solved to obtain the unknown well-bore pressure of rate-constraint wells. Numerical Simulations of test cases with multiple complex wells demonstrate the ability of the new algorithm to capture the interference between the various wells and the reservoir accurately. Gas chromatography (GC) is an analytical tool very useful to investigate the composition of gaseous mixtures. However, hydrogen (H2) detection after a GC separation is only possible with a Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD), a Helium Ionisation Detector (HID) or expensive Atomic Emission Detector (AED). Recently, indirect H2 detection by GC coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) was demonstrated but the mechanism of carrier gas protonation remained unclear. With electron impact as ionisation source of MS and helium (He) as GC carrier gas, H2 is not ionised according the expected Penning ionisation neither according to the Associative ionisation. Rearrangement ionisation (RI) was found to be the main channel for H2 and D2 ionisation under GC-MS conditions used in most of laboratories using GC-MS, leading to the formation of [He−H]+ and [He−D]+ ions.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the suitability of a hot-wire anemometer infant monitoring system (Florian, Acutronic Medical Systems AG, Hirzel, Switzerland) for measuring flow and tidal volume (Vt) proximal to the endotracheal tube during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation. DESIGN: In vitro model study. SETTING: Respiratory research laboratory. SUBJECT: In vitro lung model simulating moderate to severe respiratory distress. INTERVENTION: The lung model was ventilated with a SensorMedics 3100A ventilator. Vt was recorded from the monitor display (Vt-disp) and compared with the gold standard (Vt-adiab), which was calculated using the adiabatic gas equation from pressure changes inside the model. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: A range of Vt (1-10 mL), frequencies (5-15 Hz), pressure amplitudes (10-90 cm H2O), inspiratory times (30% to 50%), and Fio2 (0.21-1.0) was used. Accuracy was determined by using modified Bland-Altman plots (95% limits of agreement). An exponential decrease in Vt was observed with increasing oscillatory frequency. Mean DeltaVt-disp was 0.6 mL (limits of agreement, -1.0 to 2.1) with a linear frequency dependence. Mean DeltaVt-disp was -0.2 mL (limits of agreement, -0.5 to 0.1) with increasing pressure amplitude and -0.2 mL (limits of agreement, -0.3 to -0.1) with increasing inspiratory time. Humidity and heating did not affect error, whereas increasing Fio2 from 0.21 to 1.0 increased mean error by 6.3% (+/-2.5%). CONCLUSIONS: The Florian infant hot-wire flowmeter and monitoring system provides reliable measurements of Vt at the airway opening during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation when employed at frequencies of 8-13 Hz. The bedside application could improve monitoring of patients receiving high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, favor a better understanding of the physiologic consequences of different high-frequency oscillatory ventilation strategies, and therefore optimize treatment.
