In 2013, the Government of Nicaragua approved the concession for a 173-mile canal to the Hong Kong Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Group. As the Western Hemisphere's second poorest nation, Nicaragua is attracted the promises of economic growth that may come as a result of the Canal Project. However, potential economic benefits may be offset by environmental and social damages that would likely occur as a result of the project. The Canal would bisect 16 watersheds, 15 protected areas, and 25 percent of Nicaragua’s rainforest, which would have high impacts on biodiversity, watershed services, and indigenous communities. In 1996, Law No. 217 was enacted to standardize the use and conservation of the environment and natural resources of Nicaragua. My research compares the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment of the Nicaragua Canal to the Environmental provisions of Law No. 217. This analysis can help understand the legal viability of the ESIA under Nicaragua environmental laws.

The neotropical pioneer species Vochysia ferruginea is locally important for timber and is being increasingly exploited. The sustainable utilisation of this species would benefit from an understanding of the level and partitioning of genetic diversity within remnant and secondary regrowth populations. We used data from total genome (amplified fragment length polymorphism, AFLP) and chloroplast genome markers to assay diversity levels within seven Costa Rican populations. Significant chloroplast differentiation between Atlantic and Pacific watersheds was observed, suggesting divergent historical origins for these populations. Contemporary gene flow, though extensive, is geographically constrained and a clear pattern of isolation by distance was detectable when an inter-population distance representing gene flow around the central Costa Rican mountain range was used. Overall population differentiation was low (F-ST = 0.15) and within-population diversity high, though variable (H-s=0.16-0.32), which fits with the overall pattern of population genetic structure expected for a widespread, outcrossed tropical tree. However genetic diversity was significantly lower and differentiation higher for recently colonised and disturbed populations compared to that at more established sites. Such a pattern seems indicative of a pioneer species undergoing repeated cycles of colonisation and succession.

Ar-40/Ar-39 incremental heating ages for twenty one grains of cryptomelane, collected at 0, 42, 45, and 60 in depths in the Cachoeira Mine weathering profile, Minas Gerais, permit calculating long-term (10 Ma time scale) weathering rate (saprolitization rate) in SE Brazil. Pure well-crystallized cryptomelane grains with high K contents (3-5 wt.%) yield reliable geochronological results. The Ar-40/Ar-39 plateau ages obtained decrease from the top to the bottom of the profile (12.7 +/- 0.1 to 7.6 +/- 0.1 Ma at surface; 7.6 +/- 0.2 to 6.1 +/- 0.2 Ma at 42 m; and 7.1 +/- 0.2 to 5.9 +/- 0.1 Ma at 45 in; 6.6 +/- 0.1 to 5.2 +/- 0.1 Ma at 60 in), yielding a weathering front propagation rate of 8.9 +/- 1.1 m/m.y. From the geochronological results and the mineral transformations implicit by the current mineralogy in the weathering profiles, it is possible to calculate the saprolitization rate for the Cachoeira Mine lithologies and for adjacent weathering profiles developed on granodiorites and scbists. The measured weathering front propagation rate yields a saprolitization rate of 24.9 +/- 3.1 t/km(2)/yr. This average long-term (> 10 Ma) saprolitization rate is consistent with mass balance calculations results for present saprolitization rates in weathering watersheds. These results are also consistent with longterm saprolitization rates estimated by combining cosmogenic isotope denudation rates with mass balance calculations. A history of government drug regulation and the relationship between the pharmaceutical companies in the U.K. and the licensing authority is outlined. Phases of regulatory stringency are identified with the formation of the Committees on Safety of Drugs and Medicines viewed as watersheds. A study of the impact of government regulation on industrial R&D activities focuses on the effects on the rate and direction of new product innovation. A literature review examines the decline in new chemical entity innovation. Regulations are cited as a major but not singular cause of the decline. Previous research attempting to determine the causes of such a decline on an empirical basis is given and the methodological problems associated with such research are identified. The U.K. owned sector of the British pharmaceutical industry is selected for a study employing a bottom-up approach allowing disaggregation of data. A historical background to the industry is provided, with each company analysed or a case study basis. Variations between companies regarding the policies adopted for R&D are emphasised. The process of drug innovation is described in order to determine possible indicators of the rate and direction of inventive and innovative activity. All possible indicators are considered and their suitability assessed. R&D expenditure data for the period 1960-1983 is subsequently presented as an input indicator. Intermediate output indicators are treated in a similar way and patent data are identified as a readily-available and useful source. The advantages and disadvantages of using such data are considered. Using interview material, patenting policies for most of the U.K. companies are described providing a background for a patent-based study. Sources of patent data are examined with an emphasis on computerised systems. A number of searches using a variety of sources are presented. Patent family size is examined as a possible indicator of an invention's relative importance. The patenting activity of the companies over the period 1960-1983 is given and the variation between companies is noted. The relationship between patent data and other indicators used is analysed using statistical methods resulting in an apparent lack of correlation. An alternative approach taking into account variations in company policy and phases in research activity indicates a stronger relationship between patenting activity, R&D Expenditure and NCE output over the period. The relationship is not apparent at an aggregated company level. Some evidence is presented for a relationship between phases of regulatory stringency, inventive and innovative activity but the importance of other factors is emphasised.

This dissertation research project addressed the question of how hydrologic restoration of the Everglades is impacting the nutrient dynamics of marsh ecosystems in the southern Everglades. These effects were analyzed by quantifying nitrogen (N) cycle dynamics in the region. I utilized stable isotope tracer techniques to investigate nitrogen uptake and cycling between the major ecosystem components of the freshwater marsh system. I recorded the natural isotopic signatures (δ15N and δ 13C) for major ecosystem components from the three major watersheds of the Everglades: Shark River Slough, Taylor Slough, and C-111 basin. Analysis of δ15 N and δ13C natural abundance data were used to demonstrate the spatial extent to which nitrogen from anthropogenic or naturally enriched sources is entering the marshes of the Everglades. In addition, I measured the fluxes on N between various ecosystem components at both near-canal and estuarine ecotone locations. Lastly, I investigated the effect of three phosphorus load treatments (0.00 mg P m-2, 6.66 mg P m-2, and 66.6 mg P m-2) on the rate and magnitude of ecosystem N-uptake and N-cycling. The δ15N and δ13C natural abundance data supported the hypothesis that ecosystem components from near-canal sites have heavier, more enriched δ 15N isotopic signatures than downstream sites. The natural abundance data also showed that the marshes of the southern Everglades are acting as a sink for isotopically heavier, canal-borne dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and a source for "new" marsh derived dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). In addition, the 15N mesocosm data showed the rapid assimilation of the 15N tracer by the periphyton component and the delayed N uptake by soil and macrophyte components in the southern Everglades.
