From 1950 to 1990 a total of 45,862 strains (31,517 isolates from human sources, and 14,345 of non-human origin) were identified at Instituto Adolfo Lutz. No prevalence of any serovars was seen during the period 1950-66 among human sources isolates. Important changing pattern was seen in 1968, when S. Typhimurim surprisingly increased becoming the prevalent serovar in the following decades. During the period of 1970-76, S. Typhimurium represented 77.7% of all serovars of human origin. Significant rise in S. Agona isolation as well as in the number of different serovars among human sources strains were seen in the late 70' and the 80's. More than one hundred different serovars were identified among non-human origin strains. Among serovars isolated from human sources, 74.9%, 15.5%, and 3.7% were recovered from stool, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid cultures, respectively. The outbreak of meningitis by S. Grumpensis in the 60's, emphasizes the concept that any Salmonella serovars can be a cause of epidemics, mainly of the nosocomial origin. This evaluation covering a long period shows the important role of the Public Health Laboratory in the surveillance of salmonellosis, one of the most frequent zoonosis in the world.

The minimum interval graph completion problem consists of, given a graph G = ( V, E ), finding a supergraph H = ( V, E ∪ F ) that is an interval graph, while adding the least number of edges |F| . We present an integer programming formulation for solving the minimum interval graph completion problem recurring to a characteri- zation of interval graphs that produces a linear ordering of the maximal cliques of the solution graph.

In this paper we address an order processing optimization problem known as minimization of open stacks (MOSP). We present an integer pro gramming model, based on the existence of a perfect elimination scheme in interval graphs, which finds an optimal sequence for the costumers orders.

With the introduction of the electrics cars into the market new technologies regarding the battery are being developed and new problems to be solved, one of them the battery management system because each type of cell requires a specific way of handling. This research is done using the active research method to find out the actual problem on this subject and features a BMS should have, understand how they work and how to develop them applied to the purpose on this work. Once the features the BMS should have are clarified, it’s possible to develop a BMS for an electric racing car. The decisions are made taking into consideration the nature of the vehicle being developed. After the project done it’s clear to see that what was developed was not only the BMS itself but all the other factors around it, such as CAN communication, safety control, diagnostics and so on.

Order picking consists in retrieving products from storage locations to satisfy independent orders from multiple customers. It is generally recognized as one of the most significant activities in a warehouse (Koster et al, 2007). In fact, order picking accounts up to 50% (Frazelle, 2001) or even 80% (Van den Berg, 1999) of the total warehouse operating costs. The critical issue in today’s business environment is to simultaneously reduce the cost and increase the speed of order picking. In this paper, we address the order picking process in one of the Portuguese largest companies in the grocery business. This problem was proposed at the 92nd European Study Group with Industry (ESGI92). In this setting, each operator steers a trolley on the shop floor in order to select items for multiple customers. The objective is to improve their grocery e-commerce and bring it up to the level of the best international practices. In particular, the company wants to improve the routing tasks in order to decrease distances. For this purpose, a mathematical model for a faster open shop picking was developed. In this paper, we describe the problem, our proposed solution as well as some preliminary results and conclusions.

This paper presents a methodology for multi-objective day-ahead energy resource scheduling for smart grids considering intensive use of distributed generation and Vehicle- To-Grid (V2G). The main focus is the application of weighted Pareto to a multi-objective parallel particle swarm approach aiming to solve the dual-objective V2G scheduling: minimizing total operation costs and maximizing V2G income. A realistic mathematical formulation, considering the network constraints and V2G charging and discharging efficiencies is presented and parallel computing is applied to the Pareto weights. AC power flow calculation is included in the metaheuristics approach to allow taking into account the network constraints. A case study with a 33-bus distribution network and 1800 V2G resources is used to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

This paper presents a decision support tool methodology to help virtual power players (VPPs) in the Smart Grid (SGs) context to solve the day-ahead energy resource scheduling considering the intensive use of Distributed Generation (DG) and Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G). The main focus is the application of a new hybrid method combing a particle swarm approach and a deterministic technique based on mixedinteger linear programming (MILP) to solve the day-ahead scheduling minimizing total operation costs from the aggregator point of view. A realistic mathematical formulation, considering the electric network constraints and V2G charging and discharging efficiencies is presented. Full AC power flow calculation is included in the hybrid method to allow taking into account the network constraints. A case study with a 33-bus distribution network and 1800 V2G resources is used to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

An intensive use of dispersed energy resources is expected for future power systems, including distributed generation, especially based on renewable sources, and electric vehicles. The system operation methods and tool must be adapted to the increased complexity, especially the optimal resource scheduling problem. Therefore, the use of metaheuristics is required to obtain good solutions in a reasonable amount of time. This paper proposes two new heuristics, called naive electric vehicles charge and discharge allocation and generation tournament based on cost, developed to obtain an initial solution to be used in the energy resource scheduling methodology based on simulated annealing previously developed by the authors. The case study considers two scenarios with 1000 and 2000 electric vehicles connected in a distribution network. The proposed heuristics are compared with a deterministic approach and presenting a very small error concerning the objective function with a low execution time for the scenario with 2000 vehicles.

A definição de teores mínimos de incorporação de biocombustíveis, constitui objeto de discussão entre grupos pro-desenvolvimento e ambientalistas. Esses últimos argumentam que as consequências da utilização desta fonte energética ainda são desconhecidas. Além disso, alegam que a produção de biocombustíveis é, em parte, responsável pelo aumento no preço dos alimentos, encoraja a conversão de florestas em monoculturas e conduz à exploração de trabalhadores em países em desenvolvimento (PEDs). Para responder à dependência energética dos combustíveis de origem fóssil, e ajudar a reduzir as emissões de gases com efeito de estufa, sobretudo no sector dos transportes, o biodiesel produzido a partir de óleos alimentares usados têm sido apontado como uma “solução verde” capaz de minimizar o problema das alterações climáticas e valorizar um resíduo, e simultaneamente conferir ao setor energético um pouco mais de independência. De forma a desmistificar e clarificar um pouco estas premissas, a presente dissertação pretende fazer um estudo de avaliação do impacto da utilização do biodiesel, nomeadamente no que diz respeito às emissões gasosas. Posteriormente realizou-se, tomando como referência uma pequena frota industrial existente, uma análise comparativa dos consumos e emissões dos principais poluentes decorrentes da utilização do biodiesel em diferentes percentagens de incorporação no gasóleo, comparativamente ao gasóleo puro. O trabalho culmina com uma abordagem técnica sobre o comportamento de um veículo equipado com um motor de ignição por compressão, utilizando como biocombustível o biodiesel.

A intervenção humana no manuseamento de veículos submarinos operados remotamente (ROVs) é um requisito necessário para garantir o sucesso da missão e a integridade do equipamento. Contudo, a sua teleoperação não é fácil, pelo que a condução assistida destes veículos torna-se relevante. Esta dissertação propõe uma solução para este problema para ROVs de 3DOF (surge, heave e yaw). São propostas duas abordagens distintas – numa primeira propõe-se um sistema de controlo Image Based Visual Servoing (IBVS) tendo em vista a utilização exclusiva de uma câmara (sensor existente neste tipo de sistemas) por forma a melhorar significativamente a teleoperação de um pequeno ROV; na segunda, propõe-se um sistema de controlo cinemático para o plano horizontal do veículo e um algoritmo de uma manobra capaz de dotar o ROV de movimento lateral através de uma trajectória dente-de-serra. Demonstrou-se em cenários de operação real que o sistema proposto na primeira abordagem permite ao operador de um ROV com 3DOF executar tarefas de alguma complexidade (estabilização) apenas através de comandos de alto nível, melhorando assim drasticamente a teleoperação e qualidade de inspecção do veículo em questão. Foi também desenvolvido um simulador do ROV em MATLAB para validação e avaliação das manobras, onde o sistema proposto na segunda abordagem foi validado com sucesso.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection constitutes a major public health problem in Brazil. The transmission of HAV is primarily by fecal-oral route so the water is an important vehicle of HAV dissemination. There is a great incidence of acute cases of hepatitis A in some areas of Brazil however the seasonal variation of these cases was not documented. The aim of this study was to determine the seasonality of HAV infection in Rio de Janeiro. From January 1999 to December 2001, 1731 blood samples were collected at the National Reference Center for Hepatitis Viruses in Brazil (NRCHV). These samples were tested by a commercial enzyme-immunoassay to detect anti-HAV IgM antibodies. Yearly positive rates were 33.74% in 1999, 32.19% in 2000, and 30.63% in 2001. A seasonal variation was recognized with the highest incidence in spring and summer. Furthermore a seasonal increase in incidence of HAV infection was found during the rainy season (December to March) because the index of rains is very high. It is concluded that HAV infections occur all year round with a peak during hot seasons with great number of rains.

Radio link quality estimation is essential for protocols and mechanisms such as routing, mobility management and localization, particularly for low-power wireless networks such as wireless sensor networks. Commodity Link Quality Estimators (LQEs), e.g. PRR, RNP, ETX, four-bit and RSSI, can only provide a partial characterization of links as they ignore several link properties such as channel quality and stability. In this paper, we propose F-LQE (Fuzzy Link Quality Estimator, a holistic metric that estimates link quality on the basis of four link quality properties—packet delivery, asymmetry, stability, and channel quality—that are expressed and combined using Fuzzy Logic. We demonstrate through an extensive experimental analysis that F-LQE is more reliable than existing estimators (e.g., PRR, WMEWMA, ETX, RNP, and four-bit) as it provides a finer grain link classification. It is also more stable as it has lower coefficient of variation of link estimates. Importantly, we evaluate the impact of F-LQE on the performance of tree routing, specifically the CTP (Collection Tree Protocol). For this purpose, we adapted F-LQE to build a new routing metric for CTP, which we dubbed as F-LQE/RM. Extensive experimental results obtained with state-of-the-art widely used test-beds show that F-LQE/RM improves significantly CTP routing performance over four-bit (the default LQE of CTP) and ETX (another popular LQE). F-LQE/RM improves the end-to-end packet delivery by up to 16%, reduces the number of packet retransmissions by up to 32%, reduces the Hop count by up to 4%, and improves the topology stability by up to 47%.

The use of unmanned marine robotic vehicles in bathymetric surveys is discussed. This paper presents recent results in autonomous bathymetric missions with the ROAZ autonomous surface vehicle. In particular, robotic surface vehicles such as ROAZ provide an efficient tool in risk assessment for shallow water environments and water land interface zones as the near surf zone in marine coast. ROAZ is an ocean capable catamaran for distinct oceanographic missions, and with the goal to fill the gap were other hydrographic surveys vehicles/systems are not compiled to operate, like very shallow water rivers and marine coastline surf zones. Therefore, the use of robotic systems for risk assessment is validated through several missions performed either in river scenario (in a very shallow water conditions) and in marine coastlines.

RESUMO - Os sistemas de saúde deparam-se, actualmente, com novos paradigmas, ao nível da qualidade da prestação de cuidados de saúde, bem como no que se refere à necessidade de controlo dos custos com o sector da saúde, obrigando as organizações a adaptarem-se por forma a fornecerem a resposta mais adequada às crescentes necessidades dos indivíduos. O reconhecimento desta realidade tem levado os governos de muitos países a definir políticas orientadas para problemas de saúde específicos e a adoptar estratégias de intervenção que privilegiam uma abordagem integrada com o objectivo de melhorarem progressivamente o nível de saúde das populações, a qualidade dos cuidados prestados e a eficiência na utilização de recursos. Em Portugal, a aplicação dos princípios que estiveram na base dos modelos de gestão da doença, deu origem ao modelo experimental de Gestão Integrada da Doença, que incorpora a gestão clínica da doença, centrada no doente, com especial enfoque na sua autogestão e na clarificação das melhores práticas profissionais, visando a sua uniformização; a reorganização do modelo de prestação de cuidados, com a criação de Centros de Elevada Diferenciação e Centros de Tratamento, com especiais preocupações no que concerne à orientação do doente no sistema para que os cuidados lhe seja ministrados no nível mais adequado; um modelo de financiamento específico, indexado aos resultados, que reflicta a adopção das melhores práticas; um sistema de informação que permita a monitorização e avaliação constante deste processo. O desenvolvimento deste modelo organizacional tem-se revelado como uma estratégia inovadora e como uma ferramenta de elevado potencial para a melhoria da prestação de cuidados de saúde e para a promoção de uma maior efectividade e eficiência, tal como poderá, ainda, constituirse como um veículo, importante e permanente, de informação de apoio à decisão em Saúde. Este modelo visa, no fundo, promover uma acção concertada no sentido da obtenção de uma intervenção precisa, através da mobilização de recursos adequados, que permitam uma melhoria do estado de saúde, da qualidade de vida e do bem-estar global dos doentes. Esta abordagem passa pela colaboração e coordenação dos diferentes níveis de prestação de cuidados, no sentido de oferecerem cuidados integrados de saúde, com níveis de qualidade elevados em termos de prevenção, diagnóstico, tratamento, reabilitação e acompanhamento. ------------------------ --ABSTRACT – The health systems are faced with new paradigms, on one hand in the healthcare services delivered to the populations, and on the other hand, in the need to control costs in the health sector, forcing organizations to adapt and provide the most appropriate response to the individuals growing needs. The magnitude of this problem, in terms of public health, requires the adoption of a directed, targeted, planned and integrated action, based on clear and well defined strategies in order to obtain health gains, improving the quality of care and streamlining the costs. In Portugal, the application of those principles forming the basis of the disease management models, led to the Integrated Disease Management model which, apart from the clinical management of the disease, also incorporates the healthcare delivery structure reorganization, a specific financing model based on an information system that allows the process monitoring and evaluation. The development of Integrated Disease Management models is a central strategy and a tool for improving healthcare delivery, more effectively and efficiently, and can even be an important and permanent vehicle of information for health decision support. Therefore, it is important to promote a concerted action towards achieving a precise intervention, mobilizing the resources, improving the health status, quality of life and the overall patients’ wellbeing. In this work the mission control and supervision system developed for the ROAZ Autonomous Surface Vehicle is presented. Complexity in mission requirements coupled with flexibility lead to the design of a modular hierarchical mission control system based on hybrid systems control. Monitoring and supervision control for a vehicle such as ROAZ mission is not an easy task using tools with low complexity and yet powerful enough. A set of tools were developed to perform both on board mission control and remote planning and supervision. “ROAZ- Mission Control” was developed to be used in support to bathymetric and security missions performed in river and at seas.
