Thermo-mechanically processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy, with (0.1 wt.%) and without boron addition, has been subjected to tensile test under superplastic deformation conditions (Temperature, T = 850 degrees C and initial strain rate, (epsilon) over dot = 3 x 10(-4) s(-1)). The boron added alloy exhibited higher elongation (similar to 430%) in comparison to the base alloy without boron (similar to 365%). Superior ductility of the boron added alloy has been attributed to an enhanced alpha/beta interfacial boundary sliding. This was caused by riotous dynamic globularization leading to the abundant presence of equiaxed primary alpha grains with refined sizes and narrow distribution in the deforming microstructure. Cavities do occur around TiB particles during deformation; the cavities are, however, extremely localized and do not cause macroscopic cracking. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Chemical functionalization of various hydrocarbons, such as coronene, corannulene, and so forth, shows good promise in electronics applications because of their tunable optoelectronic properties. By using quantum chemical calculations, we have investigated the changes in the corannulene buckybowl structure, which greatly affect its electronic and optical properties when functionalized with different electron-withdrawing imide groups. We find that the chemical nature and position of functional groups strongly regulate the stacking geometry, -stacking interactions, and electronic structure. Herein, a range of optoelectronic properties and structure-property relationships of various imide-functionalized corannulenes are explored and rationalized in detail. In terms of carrier mobility, we find that the functionalization strongly affects the reorganization energy of corannulene, while the enhanced stacking improves hopping integrals, favoring the carrier mobility of crystals of pentafluorophenylcorannulene-5-monoimide. The study shows a host of emerging optoelectronic properties and enhancements in the charge-transport characteristics of functionalized corannulene, which may find possible semiconductor and electronics applications.

Using van-der-Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations, we explore the possibility of engineering the local structure and morphology of high-surface-area graphene-derived materials to improve the uptake of methane and carbon dioxide for gas storage and sensing. We test the sensitivity of the gas adsorption energy to the introduction of native point defects, curvature, and the application of strain. The binding energy at topological point defect sites is inversely correlated with the number of missing carbon atoms, causing Stone-Wales defects to show the largest enhancement with respect to pristine graphene (similar to 20%). Improvements of similar magnitude are observed at concavely curved surfaces in buckled graphene sheets under compressive strain, whereas tensile strain tends to weaken gas binding. Trends for CO2 and CH4 are, similar, although CO2 binding is generally stronger by similar to 4 to 5 kJ mol(-1). However, the differential between the adsorption of CO2 and CH4 is much higher on folded graphene sheets and at concave curvatures; this could possibly be leveraged for CH4/CO2 flow separation and gasselective sensors.

Full solar spectrum absorbers are widely pursued for applications related to photocatalysis and photovoltaics. Here we report multivalent Cu-doped ZnO nanoparticles which exhibit full solar spectrum absorbance and high photoactivity. Metathesis-based, green-chemical approaches with synthesis yield of similar to 100% are used. Cu incorporation in ZnO results in an increase of average solar spectrum absorbance from a mere 0.4% to 34%. On the other hand, (Zn, Cu)0 composites result in materials with up to 64% average solar spectrum absorbance. Doped systems operate well under both visible and UV illumination. The nanomaterials prepared are characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Photocatalysts explored have particle sizes >= 50 nm. This is deliberately done in order to avoid the nanotoxic size regime of ZnO. Despite the large particle size and low specific surface area (<20 m(2).g(-1)), the best catalyst reported here compare favorably with recent reports on ZnO based systems. Using X-photoelectron spectroscopy and synthesis property correlations, we infer that the presence of multivalent Cu (most likely in the form of Cu1+delta) on ZnO surface is responsible for the observed photoactivity enhancement.

Interaction of adsorbate on charged surfaces, orientation of the analyte on the surface, and surface enhancement aspects have been studied. These aspects have been explored in details to explain the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) spectra of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW or CL-20), a well-known explosive, and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) using one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles via biosynthetic route using natural precursor extracts of clove and pepper. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (bio Ag Nps) have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. SERS studies conducted using bio Ag Nps on different water insoluble analytes, such as CL-20 and TNT, lead to SERS signals at concentration levels of 400 pM. The experimental findings have been corroborated with density functional computational results, electrostatic surface potential calculations, Fukui functions and potential measurements.

Saccharomyces boulardii was encapsulated by layer-by-layer technique (LbL) using oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, chitosan and dextran sulfate to protect from degradation during its gastrointestinal transit. The protective effect of the coating was evaluated by checking viability after subjecting the coated cells to lyophilisation and simulated gastrointestinal conditions. During lyophilization, coated S. boulardii was found to have an enhanced viability of 7.74 +/- 2.00 log CFU/100 mg (5.62 x 10(6) +/- 2.12 CFU/100 mg) and 5.53 +/- 1.85 log CFU/100 mg (3.46 x 10(5) 1.73 CFU/100 mg) for uncoated cells. On sequential treatment with simulated gastric and intestinal juice, the coated cells had a viability of 4.59 +/- 1.52 log CFU/100 mg (3.8 x 104 +/- 1.52 CFU/100 mg) while only 1.90 +/- 0.80 log CFU/100 mg (0.79 x 102 +/- 0.81 CFU/100 mg) of uncoated cells survived. Confocal studies displayed the selective permeability of the coated cells which plays a significant role in maintaining the integrity and viability of the yeast cells. This clearly indicates that LbL is an efficient protective encapsulation technique and it could be potentially used for improving therapeutic applications of yeast. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Self-organized public key management in MANETs with enhanced security and without certificate-chains
Resumo:
In the self-organized public key management approaches, public key verification is achieved through verification routes constituted by the transitive trust relationships among the network principals. Most of the existing approaches do not distinguish among different available verification routes. Moreover, to ensure stronger security, it is important to choose an appropriate metric to evaluate the strength of a route. Besides, all of the existing self-organized approaches use certificate-chains for achieving authentication, which are highly resource consuming. In this paper, we present a self-organized certificate-less on-demand public key management (CLPKM) protocol, which aims at providing the strongest verification routes for authentication purposes. It restricts the compromise probability for a verification route by restricting its length. Besides, we evaluate the strength of a verification route using its end-to-end trust value. The other important aspect of the protocol is that it uses a MAC function instead of RSA certificates to perform public key verifications. By doing this, the protocol saves considerable computation power, bandwidth and storage space. We have used an extended strand space model to analyze the correctness of the protocol. The analytical, simulation, and the testbed implementation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed protocol. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present concepts and an optimization-based methodology for the design of micro-mechanical stages that have not only high precision but also an enhanced range. Joint-free distributed compliant designs provide high precision and easy manufacturability at macro and micro scales. The range of motion is enhanced by using displacement-amplifying compliant mechanisms (DaCMs). The main issue addressed in this paper is how to retain the decoupling between the X and Y motions in the stage when it is equipped with DaCMs. The natural frequency of the stage is also not compromised in enhancing the range. The optimized design has 2.5 times more range than the designs reported in the literature. Furthermore, the sensitivity improved by a factor of two when the stage is optimized for an accelerometer.

Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes have been used extensively in water desalination plants, waste water treatment in industries, agricultural farms and drinking water production applications. The objective of this work is to impart antibacterial and antifungal activities to commercially available RO membrane used in water purification systems by incorporating biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using Rosa indica wichuriana hybrid leaf extract. The morphology and surface topography of uncoated and AgNPs-coated RO membrane were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Elemental composition of the AgNPs-coated RO membrane was analyzed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX). The functional groups were identified by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Hydrophilicity of the uncoated and AgNPs-coated RO membrane was analyzed using water contact angle measurements. The thermal properties were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The AgNPs incorporated RO membrane exhibited good antibacterial and antifungal activities against pathogenic bacterial strains such as E. coli, S. aureus, M. luteus, K. pneumoniae, and P. aeruginosa and fungal strains such as Candida tropicalis, C. krusei, C. glabrata, and C. albicans.

The effect of Zr, Hf, and Sn in BaTiO3 has been investigated at close composition intervals in the dilute concentration limit. Detailed structural analysis by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction revealed that merely 2mol. % of Zr, Sn, and Hf stabilizes a coexistence of orthorhombic (Amm2) and tetragonal (P4mm) phases at room temperature. As a consequence, all the three systems show substantial enhancement in the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)), with Sn modification exhibiting the highest value similar to 425 pC/N. We demonstrate diffusing-wave spectroscopy (DWS) in a localized region of a viscoelastically inhomogeneous object by measurement of the intensity autocorrelation g(2)(tau)] that captures only the decay introduced by the temperature-induced Brownian motion in the region. The region is roughly specified by the focal volume of an ultrasound transducer which introduces region specific mechanical vibration owing to insonification. Essential characteristics of the localized non-Markovian dynamics are contained in the decay of the modulation depth M(tau)], introduced by the ultrasound forcing in the focal volume selected, on g(2)(tau). The modulation depth M(tau(i)) at any delay time tau(i) can be measured by short-time Fourier transform of g(2)(tau) and measurement of the magnitude of the spectrum at the ultrasound drive frequency. By following the established theoretical framework of DWS, we are able to connect the decay in M(tau) to the mean-squared displacement (MSD) of scattering centers and the MSD to G*(omega), the complex viscoelastic spectrum. A two-region composite polyvinyl alcohol phantom with different viscoelastic properties is selected for demonstrating local DWS-based recovery of G*(omega) corresponding to these regions from the measured region specific M(tau(i))vs tau(i). The ultrasound-assisted measurement of MSD is verified by simulating, using a generalized Langevin equation (GLE), the dynamics of the particles in the region selected as well as by the usual DWS experiment without the ultrasound. It is shown that whereas the MSD obtained by solving the GLE without the ultrasound forcing agreed with its experimental counterpart covering small and large values of tau, the match was good only in the initial transients in regard to experimental measurements with ultrasound.

Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) have implications in the pathogenesis of various lung diseases and conditions are prevalent even in non-smokers. N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and 4-(methyl nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) are potent pulmonary carcinogens present in tobacco product and are mainly responsible for lung cancer. TSNA reacts with pulmonary surfactants, and alters the surfactant phospholipid. The present study was undertaken to investigate the in vitro exposure of rat lung tissue slices to NNK or NNN and to monitor the phospholipid alteration by P-32]orthophosphate labeling. Phospholipid content decreased significantly in the presence of either NNK or NNN with concentration and time dependent manner. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the main phospholipid of lung and significant reduction was observed in PC similar to 61%, followed by phosphatidylglycerol (PG) with 100 mu M of NNK, whereas NNN treated tissues showed a reduction in phosphatidylserine (PS) similar to 60% and PC at 250 mu M concentration. The phospholipase A(2) assays and expression studies reveal that both compounds enhanced phospholipid hydrolysis, thereby reducing the phospholipid content. Collectively, our data demonstrated that both NNK and NNN significantly influenced the surfactant phospholipid level by enhanced phospholipase A(2) activity. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. This report addresses the assessment of variation in elastic property of soft biological tissues non-invasively using laser speckle contrast measurement. The experimental as well as the numerical (Monte-Carlo simulation) studies are carried out. In this an intense acoustic burst of ultrasound (an acoustic pulse with high power within standard safety limits), instead of continuous wave, is employed to induce large modulation of the tissue materials in the ultrasound insonified region of interest (ROI) and it results to enhance the strength of the ultrasound modulated optical signal in ultrasound modulated optical tomography (UMOT) system. The intensity fluctuation of speckle patterns formed by interference of light scattered (while traversing through tissue medium) is characterized by the motion of scattering sites. The displacement of scattering particles is inversely related to the elastic property of the tissue. We study the feasibility of laser speckle contrast analysis (LSCA) technique to reconstruct a map of the elastic property of a soft tissue-mimicking phantom. We employ source synchronized parallel speckle detection scheme to (experimentally) measure the speckle contrast from the light traversing through ultrasound (US) insonified tissue-mimicking phantom. The measured relative image contrast (the ratio of the difference of the maximum and the minimum values to the maximum value) for intense acoustic burst is 86.44 % in comparison to 67.28 % for continuous wave excitation of ultrasound. We also present 1-D and 2-D image of speckle contrast which is the representative of elastic property distribution.

To combine the advantages of both stability and optimality-based designs, a single network adaptive critic (SNAC) aided nonlinear dynamic inversion approach is presented in this paper. Here, the gains of a dynamic inversion controller are selected in such a way that the resulting controller behaves very close to a pre-synthesized SNAC controller in the output regulation sense. Because SNAC is based on optimal control theory, it makes the dynamic inversion controller operate nearly optimal. More important, it retains the two major benefits of dynamic inversion, namely (i) a closed-form expression of the controller and (ii) easy scalability to command tracking applications without knowing the reference commands a priori. An extended architecture is also presented in this paper that adapts online to system modeling and inversion errors, as well as reduced control effectiveness, thereby leading to enhanced robustness. The strengths of this hybrid method of applying SNAC to optimize an nonlinear dynamic inversion controller is demonstrated by considering a benchmark problem in robotics, that is, a two-link robotic manipulator system.
