Ab initio calculations have been performed to determine the energetics of oxygen atoms adsorbed onto graphene planes and the possible reaction path extracting carbon atorns in the form of carbon monoxide. Front the energetics it is confirmed that this reaction path will not significantly contribute to the gasification of well ordered carbonaceous chars. Objective To study student and staff views of the role and use of handouts, note-taking and overhead transparencies in veterinary science lectures at the University of Queensland Methods The Nominal Group Technique was used to help develop a questionnaire, which was completed by 351 students (a response rate of 84%) and 35 staff (76%) from the 5 years of the veterinary course. The data were analysed using the SAS statistical computer package. Results Staff and students held different views as to the frequency with which handouts should be used, their educational value, and whether they should be complete or partial. Fewer students than staff agreed that handouts discourage further reading in a subject. Almost all staff and students saw the central functions of note-taking to be provision of notes for subsequent revision and encoding information given by the lecturer. More students than staff however, considered that note-taking in lectures interferes with understanding. Staff and students held similar views as to the uses of overheads in lectures. Interestingly however, more staff than students agreed that overheads often contain too much information. Conclusion Both students and staff saw the central role of note-taking as providing a set of good notes for revision. Generally students preferred that this information be provided in the form of partial or complete handouts, while staff preferred students to take notes and to read outside lectures. Surprisingly, more staff than students felt that overhead transparencies often contained too much information. Note-taking, handouts and overhead transparencies need to be linked in a coherent educational strategy to promote effective learning.

We consider a mixture model approach to the regression analysis of competing-risks data. Attention is focused on inference concerning the effects of factors on both the probability of occurrence and the hazard rate conditional on each of the failure types. These two quantities are specified in the mixture model using the logistic model and the proportional hazards model, respectively. We propose a semi-parametric mixture method to estimate the logistic and regression coefficients jointly, whereby the component-baseline hazard functions are completely unspecified. Estimation is based on maximum likelihood on the basis of the full likelihood, implemented via an expectation-conditional maximization (ECM) algorithm. Simulation studies are performed to compare the performance of the proposed semi-parametric method with a fully parametric mixture approach. The results show that when the component-baseline hazard is monotonic increasing, the semi-parametric and fully parametric mixture approaches are comparable for mildly and moderately censored samples. When the component-baseline hazard is not monotonic increasing, the semi-parametric method consistently provides less biased estimates than a fully parametric approach and is comparable in efficiency in the estimation of the parameters for all levels of censoring. The methods are illustrated using a real data set of prostate cancer patients treated with different dosages of the drug diethylstilbestrol. Copyright (C) 2003 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Improvement in analysis and reporting results of osteoarthritis (OA) clinical trials has been recently obtained because of harmonization and standardization of the selection of outcome variables (OMERACT 3 and OARSI). Moreover, OARSI has recently proposed the OARSI responder criteria. This composite index permits presentation of results of symptom modifying clinical trials in OA based on individual patient responses (responder yes/no). The 2 organizations (OMERACT and OARSI) established. a task force aimed at evaluating: (1) the variability of observed placebo and active treatment effects using the OARSI responder criteria; and (2) the possibility of proposing a simplified set of criteria. The conclusions of the task force were presented and discussed during the OMERACT 6 conference, where a simplified set of responder criteria (OMERACT-OARSI set of criteria) was proposed.

Let X and Y be Hausdorff topological vector spaces, K a nonempty, closed, and convex subset of X, C: K--> 2(Y) a point-to-set mapping such that for any x is an element of K, C(x) is a pointed, closed, and convex cone in Y and int C(x) not equal 0. Given a mapping g : K --> K and a vector valued bifunction f : K x K - Y, we consider the implicit vector equilibrium problem (IVEP) of finding x* is an element of K such that f (g(x*), y) is not an element of - int C(x) for all y is an element of K. This problem generalizes the (scalar) implicit equilibrium problem and implicit variational inequality problem. We propose the dual of the implicit vector equilibrium problem (DIVEP) and establish the equivalence between (IVEP) and (DIVEP) under certain assumptions. Also, we give characterizations of the set of solutions for (IVP) in case of nonmonotonicity, weak C-pseudomonotonicity, C-pseudomonotonicity, and strict C-pseudomonotonicity, respectively. Under these assumptions, we conclude that the sets of solutions are nonempty, closed, and convex. This paper deals with an n-fold Weibull competing risk model. A characterisation of the WPP plot is given along with estimation of model parameters when modelling a given data set. Signal peptides and transmembrane helices both contain a stretch of hydrophobic amino acids. This common feature makes it difficult for signal peptide and transmembrane helix predictors to correctly assign identity to stretches of hydrophobic residues near the N-terminal methionine of a protein sequence. The inability to reliably distinguish between N-terminal transmembrane helix and signal peptide is an error with serious consequences for the prediction of protein secretory status or transmembrane topology. In this study, we report a new method for differentiating protein N-terminal signal peptides and transmembrane helices. Based on the sequence features extracted from hydrophobic regions (amino acid frequency, hydrophobicity, and the start position), we set up discriminant functions and examined them on non-redundant datasets with jackknife tests. This method can incorporate other signal peptide prediction methods and achieve higher prediction accuracy. For Gram-negative bacterial proteins, 95.7% of N-terminal signal peptides and transmembrane helices can be correctly predicted (coefficient 0.90). Given a sensitivity of 90%, transmembrane helices can be identified from signal peptides with a precision of 99% (coefficient 0.92). For eukaryotic proteins, 94.2% of N-terminal signal peptides and transmembrane helices can be correctly predicted with coefficient 0.83. Given a sensitivity of 90%, transmembrane helices can be identified from signal peptides with a precision of 87% (coefficient 0.85). The method can be used to complement current transmembrane protein prediction and signal peptide prediction methods to improve their prediction accuracies. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Cropp and Gabric [Ecosystem adaptation: do ecosystems maximise resilience? Ecology. In press] used a simple phytoplanktonzooplankton-nutrient model and a genetic algorithm to determine the parameter values that would maximize the value of certain goal functions. These goal functions were to maximize biomass, maximize flux, maximize flux to biomass ratio, and maximize resilience. It was found that maximizing goal functions maximized resilience. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the Cropp and Gabric [Ecosystem adaptation: do ecosystems maximise resilience? Ecology. In press] result was indicative of a general ecosystem principle, or peculiar to the model and parameter ranges used. This study successfully replicated the Cropp and Gabric [Ecosystem adaptation: do ecosystems maximise resilience? Ecology. In press] experiment for a number of different model types, however, a different interpretation of the results is made. A new metric, concordance, was devised to describe the agreement between goal functions. It was found that resilience has the highest concordance of all goal functions trialled. for most model types. This implies that resilience offers a compromise between the established ecological goal functions. The parameter value range used is found to affect the parameter versus goal function relationships. Local maxima and minima affected the relationship between parameters and goal functions, and between goal functions. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Deterioration of concrete or reinforcing steel through excessive contaminant concentration is often the result of repeated wetting and drying cycles. At each cycle, the absorption of water carries new contaminants into the unsaturated concrete. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is used with large concrete samples to observe the shape of the wetting profile during a simple one-dimensional wetting process. The absorption of water by dry concrete is modelled by a nonlinear diffusion equation with the unsaturated hydraulic diffusivity being a strongly nonlinear function of the moisture content. Exponential and power functions are used for the hydraulic diffusivity and corresponding solutions of the diffusion equation adequately predict the shape of the experimental wetting profile. The shape parameters, describing the wetting profile, vary little between different blends and are relatively insensitive to subsequent re-wetting experiments allowing universal parameters to be suggested for these concretes.

In this paper we present a technique for visualising hierarchical and symmetric, multimodal fitness functions that have been investigated in the evolutionary computation literature. The focus of this technique is on landscapes in moderate-dimensional, binary spaces (i.e., fitness functions defined over {0, 1}(n), for n less than or equal to 16). The visualisation approach involves an unfolding of the hyperspace into a two-dimensional graph, whose layout represents the topology of the space using a recursive relationship, and whose shading defines the shape of the cost surface defined on the space. Using this technique we present case-study explorations of three fitness functions: royal road, hierarchical-if-and-only-if (H-IFF), and hierarchically decomposable functions (HDF). The visualisation approach provides an insight into the properties of these functions, particularly with respect to the size and shape of the basins of attraction around each of the local optima.

Este artigo busca revelar o processo de desenvolvimento da categoria dos auditores fiscais da Receita Federal do Brasil (AFRFBs), a partir das mudanças no contexto social e profissional, e a forma como essas mutações concorreram para a construção de uma identidade profissional própria desses servidores. O que se pretende é entender como o contexto político-econômico vem alterando as percepções que esses profissionais têm de si próprios e como as reformas transformaram o modo de exercerem suas funções. A pesquisa, que se dá a partir de uma proposta de transação "quanti-quali", permitiu explorar, na trilha teórica de Dubar, aspectos relevantes do contínuo processo de construção das identidades profissionais ou de perfis identitários desses servidores. Os conhecimentos sobre o trabalho e as formas de identificação profissional na categoria dos auditores fiscais da Receita Federal do Brasil podem contribuir para a reflexão sobre relações de trabalho e processos de gestão pública no Brasil.

Investiga-se a convergência de conjuntos de bases em direção ao limite numérico da energia Hartree-Fock (HF) total para as seqüências hierárquicas dos conjuntos de bases XZP e ccpVXZ. Para as duas hierarquias, melhoramentos significativos são obtidos com cada incremento em X. Para estimar o limite do conjunto de base completo, uma forma exponencial foi usada. Entre as várias aproximações consideradas aqui, uma extrapolação exponencial de três parâmetros aplicada aos resultados TZP, QZP e 5ZP deu os limites do conjunto de bases mais precisos. Em adição, energias HF dos orbitais moleculares ocupados mais altos de algumas moléculas diatômicas foram calculadas com o conjunto 5ZP e comparadas com as correspondentes obtidas com o conjunto cc-pV5Z e com um método numérico HF.

Quais são os “modos de ser sendo junto ao outro no mundo” professores de Educação Física da Prefeitura Municipal da Serra, ES, situados no que se denomina “real” e do professor de Educação Física padre José no filme “Má Educação” de Pedro Almodóvar situado no que se denomina “ficcional”? Que contribuições reflexivas podem trazer tais dados (analisados hermeneuticamente) para a Formação Continuada de professores de Educação Física [3]? OBJETIVO: Descrever os “modos de ser sendo junto ao outro no mundo” de [1] professores de Educação Física que trabalham em escolas públicas da Prefeitura Municipal da Serra, ES & do [2] padre José, personagem ficcional, professor de Educação Física no filme espanhol de 2004 “Má Educação” fazendo-o primeiramente através de uma pesquisa clássica (descritiva e hermenêutica) e depois uma literaturalizada e artística (hermenêutica). MARCO TEÓRICO: Trata-se de uma proposta discursiva (teórica) fenomenológica existencial de tendência marxista criada por Pinel; METODOLOGIA: Tratou-se de uma pesquisa fenomenológica existencial seguindo recomendações de Forghieri (2001) e Pinel (2006; 2012) - dentre outros. Os 29 professores de Educação Física foram provocados a mostrarem os seus “modos de ser sendo junto ao outro no mundo” do ofício professor de Educação Física. Depois essa mesma provocação foi feita ao personagem do filme. RESULTADOS & DISCUSSÃO: Descreveram-se [1] os “modos de ser sendo junto ao outro no mundo” dos professores de Educação Física na dimensão do real e do ficcional (cinema), e não se objetivou comparação por mais que isso tenha ficado evidente. Esses professores, em 2011/2012, experienciando uma democracia (im)perfeita brasileira [que tem até tendências neofascistas], mais ainda assim democracia - foram compreendidos sempre tomando um norte/ rumo/ direção em subjetivação pelos Guias de Sentido (GS – Pinel) democráticos reconhecimento [demanda do grupo em ser valorizado, reconhecido], em (im) potência [impotência e potencia possível de vir a lume sempre; a força e seu outro lado, a fragilidade de ser], afetando [o que se pratica e pensa/sente afeta a si mesmo, o outro e o mundo; o afetar produz mais subjetivações], sonhando [há demanda sempre de realizar projetos de vida; o projeto de ser sempre devir, em construção sempre; é uma precisão imprecisa], saudavelmente insano [o quão perto pode estar a experienciar a sanidade e a loucura e o quanto uma loucura é sã, pois criativa, inventiva, produtiva, opositora ao estabelecido] – eles mesmos junto ao outro no mundo tornando-se sujeitos. [2] Já o professor de Educação Física padre José da película almodovariana é um professor que de imediato pode ser apreendido como sólido e fixo na sua perversão fascista, ele como parte legitimadora do Estado espanhol de Franco, na década de 60, provavelmente em 1964, que é, na ficção, o espaço-tempo de José e suas ações pedagógicas e psicológicas (e de Educação Física). Mas não é apenas o fascismo que torna o fascista um criador de um cotidiano fascista, pois afinal, paralelamente a ele, no concreto e na ficção, haviam pessoas generosas, resistentes e resilientes que atuavam contra essas pressões quase na maioria das vezes advindas do todo (Estado) – eram pessoas democráticas individualmente e em pequenos e grandes grupos; eram exemplo de resistência contra o estabelecido pela ideologia dominante de então. José numa instituição fascista não conseguiu refletir e agir diferentemente, isto é, com mais saúde mental, escolhendo (na liberdade) ser fascista, ser menor (pouco) – optou não ser-mais. Finalmente os mesmos dados são apresentados em outra estética possível e sempre aberta, inconclusa, devir... As artes e a poesia (bem como a literatura) procuram cuidadosamente desvelar os “modos de ser junto ao outro no mundo” professor de Educação Física do mundo real e do imaginário (fílmico) desvelando muitas vezes indissociados. PÓSCRITO: O autor descreve as possíveis implicações do seu estudo para educação física pautado sempre em uma proposta de criar um discursso insubmisso focando na ideia de que uma pesquisa demanda narrar a vida, e literaturalizar a ciência.
