N-arylamides from selenium-catalyzed reactions of nitroaromatics and amides in the presence of carbon monoxide and mixed organic bases

N-Arylamides were exclusively obtained in moderate to good yields from selenium-catalyzed reactions of nitroaromatics with amides in the presence of CO and mixed organic bases Et3N and DBU.

Combination of CH4 oxidative coupling reaction with C2H6 oxidative dehydrogenation by CO2 to C2H4

A new process has been suggested for converting natural gas to ethylene by combining oxidative coupling of methane with ethane dehydrogenation to provide an efficient method for the utilization of thermicity and CO2. From their thermodynamics, it is clear that the exothermicity from CH4 oxidative coupling reaction (DeltaH(800degreesC) = -174.3 kJ mol(-1)) can support C2H6 dehydrogenation by CO2 (DeltaH(800degreesC) = + 180.2 kJ mol(-1)). Meanwhile, the two reactions can be conducted under the same reaction conditions, such as the reaction temperature and reaction pressure as well as space velocity. In addition, the CO2 yielded from CH4 oxidative coupling reaction can be directly used for C2H6 dehydrogenation. Two kinds of catalyst are developed for this combined process with an achievement, from which C2H4 content in tail gas can reach attractively 16.4%, which can be used directly to produce ethylbenzene by the alkylation of benzene. Syntheses, structures and reactions of a series of beta-diketiminatoyttrium compounds

This paper describes the synthesis and selected reactions of a series of crystalline mono(beta-diiminato) yttrium chlorides 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 5c and 9. The X-ray structure of each has been determined, as well as of [YCl(L-4)(2)] (6), [Y(L-1)(2)OBut] (7) and [Y{CH(SiMe3)(2)}(thf)(mu-Cl)(2)Li(OEt2)(2)(mu-Cl)](2) (8).

Phase transition behavior and molecular orientation of oligo(9,9 '-dioctylfluorene-alt-bithiophene)

A novel conjugated oligomer, oligo(9,9'-dioctylfluorene-alt-bithiophene) (OF8T2), was found to exhibit a unique phase transition between crystalline and liquid-crystalline states, and a liquid-crystalline glass was easily generated, offering better TFT device performance. In thin films, upon annealing the OF8T2 molecules oriented preferentially with their planes of conjugation being normal to the substrate, and both film thickness and annealing temperature were critical to the film morphology and the molecular orientation. When the OF8T2 film was deposited on a rubbed polyimide surface and annealed, the molecules aligned their long axes along the rubbing direction.

Ion-Responsive Behavior of Ionic-Liquid Surfactant Aggregates with Applications in Controlled Release and Emulsification

We propose a simple but efficient, rapid, and quantitative ion-responsive micelle system based on counter-anion exchange of a surfactant with an imidazolium unit. The ion-exchange reaction results in the amphiphilic-to-hydrophobic transition of the imidazolium salt, leading to the destruction of the micelles, which has been successfully applied to control led release and emulsification.

Strings of interconnected hollow carbon nanoparticles with porous shells prepared using simple solid-phase synthesis

Strings of interconnected hollow carbon nanoparticles with porous shells were prepared by simple heat-treatments of a mixture of resorcinol-formaldehyde gel and transition-metal salts. The sample was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption. Results show that the sample consisted of relatively uniform hollow particles with sizes ranging from 70 to 80 nm forming a strings-of-pearls-like nanostructure. The material with porous shells possessed well-developed graphitic structure with an interlayer (d(002)) spacing of 0.3369 nm and the stack height of the graphite crystallites of 9 nm.

Improved Melting Strength of Polypropylene by Reactive Compounding With Ultrafine Full-Vulcanized Polybutadiene Rubber (UFBR) Particles

Ultrafine full-vulcanized polybutadiene rubber (UFBR) in particle sizes of ca. 50-100 nm has been used for modifying mechanical and processing performances of polypropylene (PP), and PP-g-maleic anhydride (PP-MA) has been used as a compatibilizer for enhancing the interfacial adhesion between the two components. The results show that PP/UFBR possesses rheological behaviors such as highly branched PP when UFBR content in blends reaches 10 wt%, while in contrast, the much low content of UFBR combining small amount of PP-MA endows the material with rheological characteristics of high melt strength materials like highly branched PP.

The Reasons for Ligand-Dependent Quantum Yields and Absorption Spectrum of Four Polypyridylruthenium(II) Complexes with a Tetrazolate-Based Ligand: TDDFT Study

The quantum yield, lifetime, and absorption spectrum of four [Ru(bpy)(2)L](+) [where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridyl; L is represented by the deprotonated form of 2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (L1) or 2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine (L2)], as well as their methylated complexes [Ru(bpy)(2)LMe](2+) (RuL1Me and RuL2Me) are closely ligand dependent. In this paper, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) were performed to compare the above properties among these complexes. The calculated results reveal that the replacement of pyridine by pyrazine or the attachment of a CH3 group to the tetrazolate ring greatly increases the pi-accepting ability of the ancillary ligands.

Determination of isocyanates by capillary electrophoresis with tris(2,2 '-bipyridine) ruthenium(II) electrochemiluminescence

CE with tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection for the quantitative determination of isocyanates was first reported. Hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and hexyl isocyanate (HI) were used as the model analytes. Commercially available N,N-diethyl-N'-methylethylenediamine was used as the derivatization reagent. It has both a secondary amine group and a tertiary amine group. The secondary amine group can quantitatively react with isocyanate group, and the tertiary amine group can react with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to produce strong ECL signal for sensitive detection. The derivatization reaction was almost instantaneous and is much faster than other reported derivative reactions using other derivative reagents.

Synthesis and Characterizations of Poly(9,10-bisarylethynyl-2,6-anthrylene)s and Poly(9,10-bisalkynyl-2,6-anthrylene)

A poly(9,10-bisalkynyl-2,6-anthrylene) (PI) and five poly(9,10-bisarylethynyl-2,6-anthrylene)s(P2-P6) as soluble conjugated polymers have been synthesized and characterized. All polymers exhibit two-dimensional conjugated characteristics as indicated by absorption spectra comprising multi-bands in the range of 300-600 nm. Compared with P1, polymers P2-P5, which contain phenylethynyl substituents with the longer conjugation than alkynyl groups, exhibit a similar to 60 nm red shift of absorption edge. However, further increasing the conjugation length of the arylethynyl substituents (longer than phenylethynyl) has only a no effect on the conjugation of the polymer chains, while comparing the absorption spectra of P6 with those of P2-P5.

Luminescence properties of Y0.9-xGdxEu0.1Al3(BO3)(4) (0 <= x <= 0.9) phosphors prepared by spray pyrolysis process

Starting from metal nitrate aqueous solutions and H3BO3, Y0.9-xGdxEu0.1Al3(BO3)(4) (0 <= x <= 0.9) phosphors were synthesized by spray pyrolysis followed by annealing at high temperature. The obtained phosphor particles have spherical morphology with size in the range 0.5-2 mu m. Independent of the x values in Y0.9-xGdxEu0.1Al3(BO3)(4) (0 <= x <= 0.9) phosphors, the Eu3+ ion shows its characteristic D-5(0), (1)-F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions with D-5(0)-F-7(2) red emission (612 nm) as the most prominent group. The photoluminescence intensity of phosphors increases with the increase of x value in Y0.9-xGdxEu0.1Al3(BO3)(4) (0 <= x <= 0.9) due to an energy migration process like Gd3+-(Gd3+)(n)-Eu3+ that occurred in the host materials.

Crystallographic and electrochemical characteristics of TiZrNiCu quasicrystal ball-milled with La0.9Zr0.1Ni4.5Al0.5 alloy

Icosahedral quasicrystalline Ti45Zr35Ni17Cu3 alloy was ball-milled with 30 mass% La0.9Zr0.1Ni4.5Al0.5 alloy (LaNi5 phase), the effect of the milling time on crystallographic and electrochemical characteristics of the alloy powder was investigated. The amount of amorphous phase increased with increasing milling time from 60 to 360 min, and the LaNi5 phase cannot be observed when milling time was 240 min or more. The maximum discharge capacity and high-rate dischargeability of milled alloy electrodes were obviously higher than those of the alloy electrode before milling. The cycling capacity retention rate after 40 cycles increased from 52.8% (t = 60 min) to 62.9% (t = 360 min).

Efficient synthesis of highly substituted pyrrolin-4-ones via PIFA-mediated cyclization reactions of enaminones

A convenient and efficient synthesis of highly substituted pyrrolin-4-ones is developed via the PIFA-mediated cyclization reactions of readily available enaminones, and a mechanism involving sequential cleavage of N-C bond, formation of new N-C bond, intramolecular addition reaction, and benzilic acid type rearrangement is proposed.
