A study is made of the electrooxidation of methanol in sulfuric acid on carbon-supported electrodes containing platinum-tin bimetal catalysts that are prepared by an in situ potentiometric-characterization route. The catalysts are investigated by employing chemical analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption-near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data in conjunction with electrochemical measurements. From the electrochemical data, it is inferred that while an electrode with (3:1) Pt-Sn/C catalyst involves a two-electron rate-limiting step akin to platinum-on-carbon electrodes, it is shifted to a one-electron mechanism on electrodes with (3:2)Pt-Sn/C, (3:3)Pt-Sn/C, and (3:4)Pt-Sn/C catalysts. The study suggests that the tin content in the platinum-tin bimetal catalyst produces: (i) a charge transfer from tin to platinum; (ii) an increase in the coverage of adsorbed methanolic residues with increase in the tin content, as indicated by the shift in rest potential of the electrodes towards the reversible value for oxidation of methanol (0.043 V versus SHE), and (iii) a decrease in the overall content of higher valent platinum sites in the catalyst.

Electro-oxidation of methanol was studied on carbon-supported Pt---Sn/C electrodes in silcotungstic acid (SiWA) at various concentrations. The porous-carbon electrodes employing Pt---Sn/C catalyst have been characterized using chemical analyses, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in conjunction with electrochemistry. The presence of Pt---Sn and Pt3Sn alloys along with Pt and SnO2 phases in the catalyst were identified by XRD. XPS analysis showed a lower amount of PtO species in the Pt---Sn/C catalyst with respect to the corresponding Pt/C sample. From the steady-state galvanostatic polarization data on Pt---Sn/C electrodes in SiWA, it is inferred that a one-electron process is the rate determining step. The performance of the electrodes in 0.084 M SiWA was better than in 2.5 M H2SO4 under similar conditions up to load currents of about 100 mA cm−2 indicating the promoting behaviour of the electrolyte. At currents larger than 100 mA cm−2, the performance of the electrodes in 0.084 SiWA was poorer than that in 2.5 M H2SO4 mainly due to the dominance of mass polarization in the former owing to the large size of keggin units associated with the structure of SiWA. This aspect was supported by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance studies on Pt---Sn/C electrodes. Simulation of the electrochemical impedance response for the oxidation of methanol in SiWA was carried out using the equivalent electrical circuit model.

Two distinct ferromagnetic phases are present in LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 for which the spin-only magnetic moment calculated from the high temperature dc susceptibility is found to be unusually high. Such a high moment can only be accounted for by assigning the valence state of the cations to Mn2+-Co4+. This is unrealistic as the earlier report based on X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has suggested the valence state to be mainly Mn4+-Co2+ with traces of Co3+. Also from our studies using XAS, it is found that the valence state is mainly Mn4+-Co2+. In addition, no notable difference is observed in the minor Co3+ present in both phases. Our results based on X-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies (XMCD) reveal the presence of ``distinct'' high orbital moment associated with Co2+ for both phases. Thus it is found that the distinctness of the orbital moment also plays a vital role in determining the magnetic moment and T-c of both phases of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3. By considering the orbital moment obtained from XMCD, the anomaly in the paramagnetic susceptibility is resolved and thus we are able to assign the valence state to Mn4+-Co2+ configuration. The difference in the magnitude of orbital moment in both phases is believed to be due to the crystal field effects.

Nanostructured carbon nitride films were prepared by pyrolysis assisted chemical vapour deposition. A two zone furnace with a uniform temperature over a length of 20 cm in both the zones was built. The precursor Azabenzimidazole (C6H5N3) taken in a quartz tube was evaporated at zone A and pyrolysed at zone B at a temperature of 800 degrees C. The FTIR spectrum of the prepared sample shows peaks at 1272 cm(-1) and 1591 cm(-1) corresponding to C-N stretching and C=N respectively, which confirms the bonding of nitrogen with carbon. Raman D and G peaks are observed at 1357 cm(-1) and 1560 cm(-1) respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows the formation of pi bonding between carbon and nitrogen atoms. These observations along with XRD analysis show the formation of crystallites of alpha-C3N4 and beta-C3N4 in the background of graphitic C3N4. The size of the nanocrystals estimated from the SEM images is similar to 100 nm.

The as-deposited and annealed radio frequency reactive magnetron sputtered tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) films were characterized by studying the chemical binding configuration, structural and electrical properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis of the films elucidate that the film annealed at 673 K was stoichiometric with orthorhombic beta-phase Ta2O5. The dielectric constant values of the tantalum oxide capacitors with the sandwich structure of Al/Ta2O5/Si were in the range from 14 to 26 depending on the post-deposition annealing temperature. The leakage current density was < 20 nA cm(-2) at the gate bias voltage of 0.04 MV/cm for the annealed films. The electrical conduction mechanism observed in the films was Poole-Frenkel. Interaction of CO with Cu clusters deposited on a ZnO(0001) crystal and on ZnO/Zn surfaces (prepared in the electron spectrometer) has been examined by UV and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The interaction is stronger with the small Cu clusters deposited on ZnO/Zn surfaces. Interaction of CO is evert stronger with annealed Cu/ZnO/Zn surfaces where Cu-Zn alloy particles are present. Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) thin films as solid electrolytes were prepared by reactive radio frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering from Li3PO4 powder compact target. High deposition rates and ease of manufacturing powder target compared with conventional ceramic Li3PO4 targets offer flexibility in handling and reduce the cost associated. Rf power density varied from 1.7 Wcm(-2) to 3 Wcm(-2) and N-2 flow from 10 to 30 sccm for a fixed substrate to target distance of 4 cm for best ionic conductivity. The surface chemical analysis done by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed incorporation of nitrogen into the film as both triply, NE and doubly. Nd coordinated form. With increased presence of NE, ionic conductivity of LiPON was found to be increasing. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of LiPON films confirmed an ionic conductivity of 1.1 x 10(-6) Scm(-1) for optimum rf power and N-2 flow conditions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Tetragonal ZrO2 was synthesized by the solution combustion technique using glycine as the fuel. The compound was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and BET surface area analysis. The ability of this compound to adsorb dyes was investigated, and the compound had a higher adsorption capacity than commercially activated carbon. Infrared spectroscopic observations were used to determine the various interactions and the groups responsible for the adsorption activity of the compound. The effects of the initial concentration of the dye, temperature, adsorbent concentration, and pH of the solution were studied. The kinetics of adsorption was described as a first-order process, and the relative magnitudes of internal and external mass transfer processes were determined. The equilibrium adsorption was also determined and modeled by a composite Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm.

The synthesis of ``smart structured'' conducting polymers and the fabrication of devices using them are important areas of research. However, conducting polymeric materials that are used in devices are susceptible to degradation due to oxygen and moisture. Thus, protection of such devices to ensure long-term stability is always desirable. Polymer nanocomposites are promising materials for the encapsulation of such devices. Therefore, it is important to develop suitable polymer nanocomposites as encapsulation materials to protect such devices. This work presents a technique based on grafting between surface-decorated gamma-alumina nanoparticles and polymer to make nanocomposites that can be used for the encapsulation of devices. Alumina was functionalized with allyltrimethoxysilane and used to conjugate polymer molecules (hydride-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) through a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles after surface modification. The grafting density of alkene groups on the surface of the modified nanoparticles was calculated using CHN and thermogravimetric analyses. The thermal stability of the composites was also evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis. The nanoindentation technique was used to analyze the mechanical characteristics of the composites. The densities of the composites were evaluated using a density gradient column, and the morphology of the composites was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. All of our studies reveal that the composites have good thermal stability and mechanical flexibility and, thus, can potentially be used for the encapsulation of organic photovoltaic devices.

Interaction of CH3OH with Cu clusters deposited on ZnO films grown on a Zn foil as well as on a ZnO(0001)Zn crystal, has been examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. On clean Cu clusters, reversible molecular adsorption or formation of CH3O is observed. However if the Cu clusters are pretreated with oxygen, both CH3O and HCOO- species are produced. Model Cu/ZnO catalyst surfaces, containing both Cu1+ and Cu-0 species, show interesting oxidation properties. On a Cu-0-rich catalyst surface, only CH3O species is formed on interaction with CH3OH. On a Cu1+-rich surface, however, HCOO- ion is the predominant species.

CuO nanowires are synthesized by heating Cu foil, rod and grid in ambient without employing a catalyst or gas flow at temperatures ranging from 400 to 800 degrees C for a duration of 1-12 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation reveals the formation of nanowires. The structure, morphology and phase of the as-synthesized nanowires are analyzed by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It is found that these nanowires are composed of CuO phase and the underlying film is of Cu2O. A systematic study is carried out to find the possibilities for the transformation of one phase to another completely. A possible growth mechanism for the nanowires is also discussed. Nanocrystallites of semiconductors, especially those belonging to II-VI and III-V groups, show size-dependent optical and electrical properties. In this paper we report on x-ray photoemission results of CdS nanocrystallites of two different sizes and compare these results with bulk CdS. The S 2p and 2s core levels of the nanocrystallites reveal three different types of sulfur, unlike bulk CdS, which shows only one kind of sulfur species. Details of the spectroscopic results provide estimates of the size of the nanocrystallites, while also indicating the origin of the stability of such small clusters. [S0163-1829(99)03811-4].

Fine particle and large surface area Cu/CeO2 catalysts of crystallite sizes in the range of 100-200 Angstrom synthesized by the solution combustion method have been investigated for NO reduction. Five percent Cu/CeO2 catalyst shows nearly 100% conversion of NO by NH3 below 300 degrees C, whereas pure ceria and Zr, Y, and Ca doped ceria show 85-95% NO conversion above 600 degrees C. Similarly NO reduction by CO has been observed over 5% Cu/CeO2 with nearly 100% conversion below 300 degrees C. Hydrocarbon (n-butane) oxidation by NO to CO2, N-2, and H2O has also been demonstrated over this catalyst below 350 degrees C making Cu/CeO2 a new NO reduction catalyst in the low temperature window of 150-350 degrees C. Kinetics of NO reduction over 5% Cu/CeO2 have also been investigated. The rate constants are in the range of 1.4 x 10(4) to 2.3 x 10(4) cm(3) g(-1) s(-1) between 170 and 300 degrees C. Cu/CeO2 catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy where Cu2+ ions are shown to be dispersed on the CeO2 surface.
