The flow resistance of an alluvial channel flow is not only affected by the Reynolds number and the roughness conditions but also the Froude number. Froude number is the most basic parameter in the case of the alluvial channel, thus effect of Froude number on resistance to flow should be considered in the formulation of the friction factor, which is not in the case of present available resistance equations. At present, no generally acceptable quantitative description of the effects of the Froude number on hydraulic resistance has been developed. Metamodeling technique, which is particularly useful in modeling a complex processes or where knowledge of the physics is limited, is presented as a tool complimentary to modeling friction factor in alluvial channels. Present work uses, a radial basis metamodel, which is a type of neural network modeling, to find the effect of Froude number on the flow resistance. Based on the experimental data taken from different sources, it has been found that the predicting capability of the present model is on acceptable level. Present work also tries in formulating an empirical equation for resistance in alluvial channel comprising all the three majorm, parameters, namely, roughness parameter, Froude number and Reynolds number. We consider a suspended elastic rod under longitudinal compression. The compression can be used to adjust potential energy for transverse displacements from the harmonic to the double well regime. The two minima in potential energy curve describe two possible buckled states. Using transition state theory (TST) we have calculated the rate of conversion from one state to other. If the strain epsilon = 4 epsilon c the simple TST rate diverges. We suggest a method to correct this divergence for quantum calculations. We also find that zero point energy contributions can be quite large so that single mode calculations can lead to large errors in the rate.

The aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in clearance of fetal lung fluid in the newborn infant by measurement of airway epithelial expression of ENaC, of nasal transepithelial potential difference (N-PD), and of lung compliance (LC). In addition, the effect of postnatal dexamethasone on airway epithelial ENaC expression was measured in preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The patient population was formed of selected term newborn infants born in the Department of Obstetrics (Studies II-IV) and selected preterm newborn infants treated in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Hospital for Children and Adolescents (Studies I and IV) of the Helsinki University Central Hospital in Finland. A small population of preterm infants suffering from BPD was included in Study I. Studies I, III, and IV included airway epithelial measurement of ENaC and in Studies II and III, measurement of N-PD and LC. In Study I, ENaC expression analyses were performed in the Research Institute of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In the following studies, analyses were performed in the Scientific Laboratory of the Hospital for Children and Adolescents. N-PD and LC measurements were performed at bedside in these hospitals. In term newborn infants, the percentage of amiloride-sensitive N-PD, a surrogate for ENaC activity, measured during the first 4 postnatal hours correlates positively with LC measured 1 to 2 days postnatally. Preterm infants with BPD had, after a therapeutic dose of dexamethasone, higher airway epithelial ENaC expression than before treatment. These patients were subsequently weaned from mechanical ventilation, probably as a result of the clearance of extra fluid from the alveolar spaces. In addition, we found that in preterm infants ENaC expression increases with gestational age (GA). In preterm infants, ENaC expression in the airway epithelium was lower than in term newborn infants. During the early postnatal period in those born both preterm and term airway epithelial βENaC expression decreased significantly. Term newborn infants delivered vaginally had a significantly smaller airway epithelial expression of αENaC after the first postnatal day than did those delivered by cesarean section. The functional studies showed no difference in N-PD between infants delivered vaginally and by cesarean section. We therefore conclude that the low airway epithelial expression of ENaC in the preterm infant and the correlation of N-PD with LC in the term infant indicate a role for ENaC in the pathogenesis of perinatal pulmonary adaptation and neonatal respiratory distress. Because dexamethasone raised ENaC expression in preterm infants with BPD, and infants were subsequently weaned from ventilator therapy, we suggest that studies on the treatment of respiratory distress in the preterm infant should include the induction of ENaC activity.

We consider the problem of transmission of several discrete sources over a multiple access channel (MAC) with side information at the sources and the decoder. Source-channel separation does not hold for this channel. Sufficient conditions are provided for transmission of sources with a given distortion. The channel could have continuous alphabets (Gaussian MAC is a special case). Various previous results are obtained as special cases.

In this paper, we study the thermoelectric power under strong magnetic field (TPSM) in quantum dots (QDs) of nonlinear optical, III-V, II-VI, GaP, Ge, Te, Graphite, PtSb2, zerogap, Lead Germanium Telluride, GaSb, stressed materials, Bismuth, IV-VI, II-V, Zinc and Cadmium diphosphides, Bi2Te3 and Antimony respectively. The TPSM in III-V, II-VI, IV-VI, HgTe/CdTe quantum well superlattices with graded interfaces and effective mass superlattices of the same materials together with the quantum dots of aforementioned superlattices have also been investigated in this context on the basis of respective carrier dispersion laws. It has been found that the TPSM for the said quantum dots oscillates with increasing thickness and decreases with increasing electron concentration in various manners and oscillates with film thickness, inverse quantizing magnetic field and impurity concentration for all types of superlattices with two entirely different signatures of quantization as appropriate in respective cases of the aforementioned quantized structures. The well known expression of the TPSM for wide-gap materials has been obtained as special case for our generalized analysis under certain limiting condition, and this compatibility is an indirect test of our generalized formalism. Besides, we have suggested the experimental method of determining the carrier contribution to elastic constants for nanostructured materials having arbitrary dispersion laws.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify and understand the emotions behind a passenger’s airport experience and how this can inform digital channel engagements. Design/methodology/approach This study investigates the emotional experience of two hundred (200) passengers’ journeys at an Australian domestic airport. A survey was conducted which implemented the use of Emocards and an interview approach of laddering. The responses were then analysed into attributes, consequences and values. Findings The results indicate that across key stages of the airport (parking, retail, gates and arrivals) passengers had different emotional experiences (positive, negative and neutral). The attributes, consequences and values behind these emotions were then used to propose digital channel content and purpose of various future digital channel engagements. Research limitations/implications By gaining emotional insights airports are able to generate digital channel engagements, which align with passengers’ needs and values rather than internal operational motivations. Theoretical contributions include the development of the Technology Acceptance Model to include emotional drivers as influences in the use of digital channels. Originality/value This research provides a unique method to understand the passengers’ emotional journey across the airport infrastructure and suggest how to better design digital channel engagements to address passenger latent needs.

Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) with an estimated prevalence of 1:2000-1:10 000 manifests with prolonged QT interval on electrocardiogram and risk for ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death. Several ion channel genes and hundreds of mutations in these genes have been identified to underlie the disorder. In Finland, four LQTS founder mutations of potassium channel genes account for up to 40-70% of genetic spectrum of LQTS. Acquired LQTS has similar clinical manifestations, but often arises from usage of QT-prolonging medication or electrolyte disturbances. A prolonged QT interval is associated with increased morbidity and mortality not only in clinical LQTS but also in patients with ischemic heart disease and in the general population. The principal aim of this study was to estimate the actual prevalence of LQTS founder mutations in Finland and to calculate their effect on QT interval in the Finnish background population. Using a large population-based sample of over 6000 Finnish individuals from the Health 2000 Survey, we identified LQTS founder mutations KCNQ1 G589D (n=8), KCNQ1 IVS7-2A>G (n=1), KCNH2 L552S (n=2), and KCNH2 R176W (n=16) in 27 study participants. This resulted in a weighted prevalence estimate of 0.4% for LQTS in Finland. Using a linear regression model, the founder mutations resulted in a 22- to 50-ms prolongation of the age-, sex-, and heart rate-adjusted QT interval. Collectively, these data suggest that one of 250 individuals in Finland may be genetically predisposed to ventricular arrhythmias arising from the four LQTS founder mutations. A KCNE1 D85N minor allele with a frequency of 1.4% was associated with a 10-ms prolongation in adjusted QT interval and could thus identify individuals at increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias at the population level. In addition, the previously reported associations of KCNH2 K897T, KCNH2 rs3807375, and NOS1AP rs2880058 with QT interval duration were confirmed in the present study. In a separate study, LQTS founder mutations were identified in a subgroup of acquired LQTS, providing further evidence that congenital LQTS gene mutations may underlie acquired LQTS. Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is characterized by exercise-induced ventricular arrhythmias in a structurally normal heart and results from defects in the cardiac Ca2+ signaling proteins, mainly ryanodine receptor type 2 (RyR2). In a patient population of typical CPVT, RyR2 mutations were identifiable in 25% (4/16) of patients, implying that noncoding variants or other genes are involved in CPVT pathogenesis. A 1.1 kb RyR2 exon 3 deletion was identified in two patients independently, suggesting that this region may provide a new target for RyR2-related molecular genetic studies. Two novel RyR2 mutations showing a gain-of-function defect in vitro were identified in three victims of sudden cardiac death. Extended pedigree analyses revealed some surviving mutation carriers with mild structural abnormalities of the heart and resting ventricular arrhythmias suggesting that not all RyR2 mutations lead to a typical CPVT phenotype, underscoring the relevance of tailored risk stratification of a RyR2 mutation carrier.

In a three player quantum `Dilemma' game each player takes independent decisions to maximize his/her individual gain. The optimal strategy in the quantum version of this game has a higher payoff compared to its classical counterpart. However, this advantage is lost if the initial qubits provided to the players are from a noisy source. We have experimentally implemented the three player quantum version of the `Dilemma' game as described by Johnson, [N.F. Johnson, Phys. Rev. A 63 (2001) 020302(R)] using nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor and have experimentally verified that the payoff of the quantum game for various levels of corruption matches the theoretical payoff. The coherent quantum evolution of a one-dimensional many-particle system after slowly sweeping the Hamiltonian through a critical point is studied using a generalized quantum Ising model containing both integrable and nonintegrable regimes. It is known from previous work that universal power laws of the sweep rate appear in such quantities as the mean number of excitations created by the sweep. Several other phenomena are found that are not reflected by such averages: there are two different scaling behaviors of the entanglement entropy and a relaxation that is power law in time rather than exponential. The final state of evolution after the quench is not characterized by any effective temperature, and the Loschmidt echo converges algebraically for long times, with cusplike singularities in the integrable case that are dynamically broadened by nonintegrable perturbations.

Average-delay optimal scheduflng of messages arriving to the transmitter of a point-to-point channel is considered in this paper. We consider a discrete time batch-arrival batch-service queueing model for the communication scheme, with service time that may be a function of batch size. The question of delay optimality is addressed within the semi-Markov decision-theoretic framework. Approximations to the average-delay optimal policy are obtained.

(CH3)4NGeCl3 is prepared, characterized and studied using 1H NMR spin lattice relaxation time and second moment to understand the internal motions and quantum rotational tunneling. Proton second moment is measured at 7 MHz as function of temperature in the range 300-77 K and spin lattice relaxation time (T1) is measured at two Larmor frequencies, as a function of temperature in the range 270-17 K employing a homemade wide-line/pulsed NMR spectrometers. T1 data are analyzed in two temperature regions using relevant theoretical models. The relaxation in the higher temperatures (270-115 K) is attributed to the hindered reorientations of symmetric groups (CH3 and (CH3)4N). Broad asymmetric T1 minima observed below 115 K down to 17 K are attributed to quantum rotational tunneling of the inequivalent methyl groups.

In the present work, solidification of a hyper-eutectic ammonium chloride solution in a bottom-cooled cavity (i.e. with stable thermal gradient) is numerically studied. A Rayleigh number based criterion is developed, which determines the conditions favorable for freckles formation. This criterion, when expressed in terms of physical properties and process parameters, yields the condition for plume formation as a function of concentration, liquid fraction, permeability, growth rate of a mushy layer and thermophysical properties. Subsequently, numerical simulations are performed for cases with initial and boundary conditions favoring freckle formation. The effects of parameters, such as cooling rate and initial concentration, on the formation and growth of freckles are investigated. It was found that a high cooling rate produced larger and more defined channels which are retained for a longer durations. Similarly, a lower initial concentration of solute resulted in fewer but more pronounced channels. The number and size of channels are also found to be related to the mushy zone thickness. The trends predicted with regard to the variation of number of channels with time under different process conditions are in accordance with the experimental observations reported in the literature.

In this paper we present and compare the results obtained from semi-classical and quantum mechanical simulation for a Double Gate MOSFET structure to analyze the electrostatics and carrier dynamics of this device. The geometries like gate length, body, thickness of this device have been chosen according to the ITRS specification for the different technology nodes. We have shown the extent of deviation between the semi-classical and quantum mechanical results and hence the need of quantum simulations for the promising nanoscale devices in the future technology nodes predicted in ITRS.

We study theoretically the destruction of spin nematic order due to quantum fluctuations in quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 magnets. If the nematic ordering is disordered by condensing disclinations, then quantum Berry phase effects induce dimerization in the resulting paramagnet. We develop a theory for a Landau-forbidden second order transition between the spin nematic and dimerized states found in recent numerical calculations. Numerical tests of the theory are suggested.
