Materials based on pure iron oxide and impregnated with niobia (Nb2O5) were prepared. Their catalytic activities were tested on the oxidation of compounds present in the wastewater from the processing of coffee berries. Particularly caffeine and catechol were tested. The oxidation reactions were carried out with the following systems (i) UV/H2O2, (ii) photo-Fenton and (iii) heterogeneous Fenton. All materials were characterized with X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer and infrared spectroscopy. Iron was mainly in the forms of goethite and maghemite. The oxidation kinetics were monitored by UV-vis and the oxidation products were monitored by mass spectrometry. The photo-Fenton reaction presented highest oxidation efficiency, removing 98% of all caffeine and catechol contents.

About 20% of Brazilian raw coffee production is considered inappropriate for exportation. Consequently, these beans are incorporated to good quality beans in the Brazilian market. This by-product of coffee industry is called PVA due to the presence of black (P), green (V) and sour (A) defective beans which are known to contribute considerably for cup quality decrease. Data on the volatile composition of Brazilian defective coffee beans are scarce. In this study, we evaluated the volatile composition of immature, black-immature, black defective beans and PVA compared to good quality beans. Potential defective beans markers were identified.

The bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity presented by Conilon coffee (C. Canephora) variety, produced in the Espírito Santo State, Brazil, were quantified. The light roast coffee showed the highest level of total phenols, trigonelline, caffeic and chlorogenic acids. The proanthocyanidin level was the highest for dark roast coffee, while caffeine level didn't show significative changes for the light and middle roast coffees. All the Conilon coffee extracts showed antioxidant activity depending on bioactive compounds concentration and roasting degree. The coffee samples submitted to a light roasting degree showed the highest antioxidant activity.

The black, green and sour coffee defect (PVA) contributes with 20% of the total coffee production. It should be separate from the normal coffee grains in order to improve the final quality of the beverage. In this way, the present work has the objective to use the PVA reject for the production of activated carbon. The activated carbon (CA) was prepared from PVA defect using zinc chloride as activating agent. The prepared material (CA PVA) was characterized and the adsorption tests were carried out using as organic models methylene blue (AM) and reactive red (VR). The CA PVA revealed to be more efficient in the removal of the organic contaminants compared to a commercial activated carbon.

Coffee is widely consumed and appreciated all over the world, both for their stimulating effect and organoleptic characteristics. Due to its complex chemical composition and the factors involving brews preparation, the consumer is exposed to a wide range of chemical compounds. Several investigations aimed to clarify and understand coffee health effects. There is no evidence that moderate consumption could be harmful. On the contrary, some benefits and possible protective effects against several pathologies have been suggested. This review compiles the main conclusions related with the "coffee and health" topic, reporting, when possible, the chemicals involved.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of coffee decaffeination with dichloromethane on the in vitro antioxidant activity of this matrix. It were determined the content of total phenolics, chlorogenic acid and caffeine of the coffee samples. The assessment of the antioxidant potential was investigated by DPPH radical scavenging method, reducer power and Fe2+chelation activity. The process of decaffeination and roasting caused changes in the levels of the compounds investigated. The results show that the decaffeination by the dichloromethane method reduces the in vitro antioxidant potential of coffee.

Epidemiological studies attributed positive effects in the central nervous system (CNS) to coffee. Among possible active constituents, serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the CNS, is present; but dietary sources do not cross the blood-brain barrier. Tryptophan and 5-hidroxytryptophan (5-HTP) are serotonin precursors and can affect brain concentrations. An ion-pair-HPLC, post-column derivatization with o-phthalaldehyde and fluorimetric detection before and after hydrolysis with NaOH and extraction with methanol:water was developed for the simultaneous determination of these compounds. It was selective, sensitive (LOD = 0.3 and 0.2 μg/mL), precise (91.3 and 94.2% recovery for tryptophan and 5-HTP, respectively), and linear from 0.3 to 40 μg/mL for both compounds. It was applied to green and roasted arabica and robusta coffees.

The objective in this work was to validate a chromatography method for the determination of total carbohydrates in soluble coffee, using a HPLC-UV-VIS with postcolumn derivatization system, in order to verify adulterant additions. The validated method was accurate and robust. Adulteration could be observed by increasing xylose and glucose levels in samples with addition of coffee husks and starchy products while decreasing of galactose and mannose characteristic carbohydrates presenting in high concentration in soluble coffees produced by arabica and robusta coffee beans.

Mid-infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics were used to identify adulteration in roasted and ground coffee by addition of coffee husks. Consumers' sensory perception of the adulteration was evaluated by a triangular test of the coffee beverages. Samples containing above 0.5% of coffee husks from pure coffees were discriminated by principal component analysis of the infrared spectra. A partial least-squares regression estimated the husk content in samples and presented a root-mean-square error for prediction of 2.0%. The triangular test indicated that were than 10% of coffee husks are required to cause alterations in consumer perception about adulterated beverages.

The influence of pre-processing of arabica coffee beans on the composition of volatile precursors including sugars, chlorogenic acids, phenolics, proteins, aminoacids, trigonelline and fatty acids was assessed and correlated with volatiles formed during roasting. Reducing sugars and free aminoacids were highest for natural coffees whereas total sugars, chlorogenic acids and trigonelline were highest for washed coffees. The highest correlation was observed for total phenolics and volatile phenolics (R= 0.999). Experimental data were evaluated by Principal Components Analysis and results showed that washed coffees formed a distinct group in relation to semi-washed and natural coffees.

Visando avaliar o desempenho de genótipos de café Catimor, foram realizadas avaliações em nível de campo quanto à capacidade produtiva e a incidência da ferrugem e, em casa-de-vegetação os componentes da resistência quantitativa à raça II do patógeno. A reação à infecção foi avaliada por meio de uma escala de notas de 0 a 9, sendo 0 a 3 para plantas consideradas resistentes e 4 a 9 para suscetíveis. Os componentes da resistência quantitativa avaliados foram: freqüência de infecção, esporulação, área foliar lesionada, período de incubação e de latência. As progênies UFV 5550, UFV 6861, UFV 6870, UFV 6831 e UFV 6834 apresentaram produtividade semelhante à da cultivar Catuaí utilizada como testemunha (P < 0,05). Nenhuma planta das progênies UFV 5530, 5451, 5550, 6903 e 5464 apresentou pústulas com esporos. Os descendentes das progênies em estudo variaram quanto à reação à ferrugem, desde resistência completa a alta suscetibilidade, sendo que a maioria situou-se nos níveis intermediários, evidenciando a presença de resistência quantitativa. O número médio de lesões e a área foliar lesionada foram 13 e 21 vezes menores, respectivamente, em UFV 6866. A progênie UFV 6870 apresentou a nota 0,1 de esporulação e a cv. Catuaí, 3,6. O período de incubação nos genótipos estudados variou de 18 a 36 dias e o período latente variou de 20 a 46 dias. Comparado à cultivar Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15, conclui-se que a maioria dos genótipos de Catimor estudados possuem resistência quantitativa.

Testauksesta on tullut oleellinen, yhä tärkeämpi sovelluskehitysprojektien osa. Sovelluksilta vaaditaan luotettavuutta kaikilla niiden toiminnan osa-alueilla. Suorituskykyyn liittyvät asiat ovat keskeinen osa näitä vaatimuksia erityisesti, kun kyse on Internetissä toimivista www-sovelluksista. Aluksi työssä esitellään erilaisia sovellusten testausmenetelmiä. Siinä kerrotaan yleisimmistä menetelmistä, joiden avulla pyritään sovelluksista löytämään vääränlaiset toimintatavat suhteessa niiden määriteltyihin toimintatapoihin. Testauksen tulosten avulla pystytään keskittymään oikeisiin kohtiin sovellusten toiminnan korjaamisessa. Työssä analysoidaan www-sovellusten rakennetta yleisen kerrosarkkitehtuurin eri kerrosten ominaisuuksia ja niihin sisältyviä keskeisimpiä sovellusten suorituskykyyn vaikuttavia tekijöitä kuvaillen. Näiden, www-sovellusten eri osien suorituskykyyn vaikuttavien ominaisuuksien perusteella esitellään esimerkkejä, kuinka Java-kieleen perustuvien www-sovellusten suorituskykyä voidaan parantaa. Lisäksi työssä kuvataan, kuinka erityisesti ilmaisella Apache JMeter-sovelluksella voidaan Java-kieleen perustuvien www-sovellusten suorituskykyä mitata. Työn tuloksena esitellään lopuksi suorituskyvyn testaus- ja parannusprosessi. Sen tarkoitus on selkeyttää erityisesti Java-kieleen perustuvien www-sovellusten suorituskyvyn testauksessa ja parannuksessa huomioon otettavia asioita.

Java-kieli on ottanut paikkansa web-ohjelmoinnin alueella, mutta tieteellisissä laskentatehtävissä se on lyhyehkön historiansa aikana jäänyt muiden ohjelmointikielten varjoon. Tutkielmassa selvitettiin, miten kieli soveltuu matemaattisten ongelmien ratkaisuun. Tutkimusta varten kehitettiin esimerkkiohjelmia eri numeerisen matematiikan osaalueille, kuten integrointiin, derivointiin, interpolointiin ja juurenhakuun; painopiste oli lineaarialgebran sovelluksissa. Eri matriisihajotelmien käyttöön perustuvia esimerkkejä tehtiin useampia. Kaikki ohjelmat toteutettiin siten, että niitä on mahdollista käyttää verkossa erilaisilla tietokonekokoonpanoilla. Tämä on kiinteä osa Java-kielen ideologiaa. Tutkielmaan kuuluvalla web-sivustolla kaikki ohjelmat lähdekoodeineen ovat kiinnostuneiden käytettävissä. Sivustoa on mahdollista kehittää ja laajentaa entisestään, sillä monet numeriikan osa-alueet jäivät vielä käsittelemättä. Ohjelmat lähdekoodeineen sekä kaikkien valmiiden luokkien lähdekoodit löytyvät myös tutkielman mukana tulevalta CD-ROM-levyltä. Esimerkkien pohjalta saatujen kokemusten perusteella todettiin, että Java-kielellä on mahdollista toteuttaa matemaattisia ohjelmia, vaikka kielellä onkin puutteensa; esimerkiksi Javan omat matemaattiset luokat ovat sellaisenaan riittämättömät vaativiin sovelluksiin. Tämä saattaa osittain selittää laimean kiinnostukseen kielen mahdollisuuksiin tieteellisessä käytössä. Java on kuitenkin vielä kehittyvä kieli, joten tulevaisuudessa aukeavat mahdollisuudet jäävät nähtäväksi.

A mancha anular do cafeeiro, causada pelo Coffee ringspot virus (CoRSV) que é transmitido pelo ácaro Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), tem sido observada em altas incidências em várias regiões cafeeiras do Estado de Minas Gerais. O CoRSV causa manchas cloróticas arrendondadas ou irregulares nas folhas, caules e frutos. Foi feita uma avaliação do efeito da infecção de frutos do cafeeiro pelo CoRSV na qualidade da bebida por meio de teste bioquímico e de degustação, e também na eventual perda de peso nos grãos. Testes revelaram que grãos provenientes de frutos de café infectados pelo CoRSV apresentavam menor teor de açúcares redutores e maior condutividade elétrica. Houve também depreciação na qualidade de bebida gerada pelos frutos infectados por meio do teste de degustação (teste de xícara). O peso médio dos grãos provenientes de frutos manchados foi cerca de 5% menor do que dos grãos de frutos sem sintomas.

Diversos fatores podem interferir na qualidade do café, especialmente aqueles relacionados às etapas pós-colheita de processamento e secagem. Algumas espécies de fungos podem se associar a grãos de café durante a pós-colheita, podendo ocasionar alterações indesejáveis. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência dos processamentos via seca (natural), seco em terreiro de terra, e via úmida (despolpado), seco em terreiro de cimento, tradicionalmente empregados na região sudoeste da Bahia, na incidência de fungos em grãos de café beneficiados produzidos na safra 2007/2008. O experimento consistiu de 4 tratamentos: a) café natural de Barra do Choça; b) café natural de Encruzilhada; c) café despolpado de Barra do Choça e d) café despolpado de Encruzilhada; e 5 repetições. Foram coletadas 20 amostras de grãos de café oriundas de diferentes propriedades cafeeiras nestes municípios. Os resultados obtidos foram avaliados pelo teste de médias t de Bonferroni a 5% de probabilidade. Houve diferença estatística significativa entre os tratamentos analisados para a infestação fúngica. Os gêneros detectados foram: Aspergillus, Penicillium e Fusarium, sendo que o gênero Aspergillus foi o de maior incidência, no qual foram identificadas oito espécies: Aspergillus ochraceus, A. niger, A. flavus, A. foetidus, A. tubingensis, A. auricomus, A. sojae e A. oryzae. Foi detectada a maior incidência de fungos em grãos de café oriundos de processamento natural do que de processamento despolpado.
