The dynamics of the restricted three-body Earth-Moon-particle problem predicts the existence of direct periodic orbits around the Lagrangian equilibrium point L1. From these orbits, we derive a set of trajectories that form links between the Earth and the Moon and are capable of performing transfers between terrestrial and lunar orbits, in addition to defining an escape route from the Earth-Moon system. When we consider a more complex and realistic dynamical system - the four-body Sun-Earth-Moon-particle (probe) problem - the trajectories have an expressive gain of inclination when they penetrate in the lunar influence sphere, thus allowing the insertion of probes into low-altitude lunar orbits with high inclinations, including polar orbits. In this study, we present these links and investigate some possibilities for performing an Earth-Moon transfer based on these trajectories. (C) 2007 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. This study evaluated the effects of bFGF and TGF-beta, individually and combined, on cell proliferation and collagen metabolism. Primary human periodontal ligament cells were stimulated with two concentrations (I and 10 ng/ml) of each growth factor, both individually and combined. Proliferation was determined by a commercial biochemical assay. Real time RT-PCR determined gene expression of NMP-1 and -2, collagen types I and III, TIMP-1, -2 and -3. Autocrine effects on synthesis of bFGF and TGF-beta were evaluated by ELISA. Only TGF-beta, either isolated or associated with bFGF, significantly increased cell proliferation. TGF-beta had anabolic effects, increasing expression of type I and III collagen as well as of TIMPs, whereas bFGF had opposite effects. When bFGF and TGF-beta were associated, the anabolic effects prevailed. Synthesis of TGF-beta was induced only by the association of lower concentrations of the growth factors, whereas there was a dose-dependent production of bFGF. It is concluded that bFGF had a predominantly catabolic effect, and TGF-beta exerted an anabolic effect on hPDL cells. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The leukotoxic activity of 31 Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans isolates from Brazilian periodontal patients [nine from Localized Juvenile Periodontitis (LJP) patients, 22 from patients with AIDS-associated Necrotizing Ulcerative Periodontitis (AIDS/NUP)], and from the reference strain A. actinomycetemcomitans ATCC43718, were analyses for their cytotoxicity on human monocytes. A cytotoxicity inhibitory assay of the isolate P35 and the reference strain ATCC 43718 with sera from ten LJP patients and ten healthy subjects was also performed and leukotoxin reactivity was evaluated with serum from rabbits immune to leukotoxin from A. actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 43718. The cytotoxicity results were not statistically different among groups of A. actinomycetemcomitans isolates from LJP and AIDS/NUP patients, but the individual analysis of each isolate showed two isolates (P24 and P35) from LJP patients with high leukotoxic activity (P<0.05). Also, a high leucotoxic inhibitory effect with LJP patients' sera compared with healthy subjects with sonic extract from isolate P35 (P<0.05) and the reactivity of rabbit antiserum to leukotoxin were observed. Both leukotoxic and non-leukotoxic activity is more frequent in PJL than AIDS/NUP patients. Even though A. actinomycetemcomitans exhibits leukotoxic activity, there is an immune response to the leucotoxin in LJP patients. (C) 2000 Academic Press.
