Exploratory research reported in this paper was undertaken in Adelaide, Australia during 1998/99. The purpose of the research is to explore local development practice as evidenced through the experiences and actions of local citizens, community based groups and local government (Neuman, 1994). Results from this first stage research suggest that sustainability initiatives in Australia might best be implemented through a collaborative approach at the local community level involving local citizens working in partnership with local government. In four experiments ERPs to emotional (negative and positive) and neutral stimuli were examined as a function of participants’ trait anxiety and repressivedefensiveness. The experiments investigated the time course of attentional bias in the processing of such stimuli. Pictures of angry, happy, and neutral faces were used in two of the experiments and pictures ofmutilated, happy, and neutral faces were used in the others. ERP’s to emotional and neutral stimuli were recorded from parietal, temporal, and frontal sites. Analysis of the P3 component indicated that the peak magnitude of the P3 at the parietal and temporal sites reflected an interactive function of trait anxiety and defensiveness. Repressors (low reported anxiety, high defensiveness) showed a consistent pattern of greater P3 magnitude at the parietal and temporal sites for emotional faces (angry, happy, and mutilated) than did high-anxious and low-anxious participants. Participants did not differ in P3 magnitude when ERPs to neutral stimuli were investigated (e.g., a fixation cross). The findings indicate that Repressors dedicate greater processing resources to emotional material, as compared to neutral material, than either the high-anxious or low-anxious individuals. Results of the four experiments are discussed within the theoretical framework of Derakshan and Eysenck (1998). The importance of understanding the role of differences in information processing, in the experience and avoidance of emotional information, as a function of trait anxiety and defensiveness is emphasized.

This paper describes algorithms that can identify patterns of brain structure and function associated with Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, normal aging, and abnormal brain development based on imaging data collected in large human populations. Extraordinary information can be discovered with these techniques: dynamic brain maps reveal how the brain grows in childhood, how it changes in disease, and how it responds to medication. Genetic brain maps can reveal genetic influences on brain structure, shedding light on the nature-nurture debate, and the mechanisms underlying inherited neurobehavioral disorders. Recently, we created time-lapse movies of brain structure for a variety of diseases. These identify complex, shifting patterns of brain structural deficits, revealing where, and at what rate, the path of brain deterioration in illness deviates from normal. Statistical criteria can then identify situations in which these changes are abnormally accelerated, or when medication or other interventions slow them. In this paper, we focus on describing our approaches to map structural changes in the cortex. These methods have already been used to reveal the profile of brain anomalies in studies of dementia, epilepsy, depression, childhood and adult-onset schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, fetal alcohol syndrome, Tourette syndrome, Williams syndrome, and in methamphetamine abusers. Specifically, we describe an image analysis pipeline known as cortical pattern matching that helps compare and pool cortical data over time and across subjects. Statistics are then defined to identify brain structural differences between groups, including localized alterations in cortical thickness, gray matter density (GMD), and asymmetries in cortical organization. Subtle features, not seen in individual brain scans, often emerge when population-based brain data are averaged in this way. Illustrative examples are presented to show the profound effects of development and various diseases on the human cortex. Dynamically spreading waves of gray matter loss are tracked in dementia and schizophrenia, and these sequences are related to normally occurring changes in healthy subjects of various ages. This paper seeks to understand how software systems and organisations co-evolve in practice and how order emerges in the overall environment. Using a metaphor of timetable as a commons, we analyse the introduction of a novel academic scheduling system to demonstrate how Complex Adaptive Systems theory provides insight into the adaptive behaviour of the various actors and how their action is both a response to and a driver of co-evolution within the engagement.

Variables influencing decision-making in real settings, as in the case of voting decisions, are uncontrollable and in many times even unknown to the experimenter. In this case, the experimenter has to study the intention to decide (vote) as close as possible in time to the moment of the real decision (election day). Here, we investigated the brain activity associated with the voting intention declared 1 week before the election day of the Brazilian Firearms Control Referendum about prohibiting the commerce of firearms. Two alliances arose in the Congress to run the campaigns for YES (for the prohibition of firearm commerce) and NO (against the prohibition of firearm commerce) voting. Time constraints imposed by the necessity of studying a reasonable number (here, 32) of voters during a very short time (5 days) made the EEG the tool of choice for recording the brain activity associated with voting decision. Recent fMRI and EEG studies have shown decision-making as a process due to the enrollment of defined neuronal networks. In this work, a special EEG technique is applied to study the topology of the voting decision-making networks and is compared to the results of standard ERP procedures. The results show that voting decision-making enrolled networks in charge of calculating the benefits and risks of the decision of prohibiting or allowing firearm commerce and that the topology of such networks was vote-(i.e., YES/NO-) sensitive. Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by repeated and persistent attempts to control thoughts and actions with rituals. These rituals are used in order to prevent feared or personally distressing outcomes. Cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) has been reported to be effective for treating OCD patients. However, about one-third (30%) of patients do not benefit from CBGT. Some of these patients do not show significant improvement and continue to use rituals following CBGT, partially because they fail to complete the exposure and ritual prevention (ERP) exercises. Consequently, it is important to motivate patients to fully engage in CBGT treatment and complete the ERP exercises. Aims: A randomized behavioral trial examined 12 weeks of manual directed CBGT, with the addition of individual sessions of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Thought Mapping (TM), and compared treatment outcome to the effectiveness of CBGT group alone. Method: Subjects were randomized (n = 93) into a CBGT group or a CBGT group with MI+TM. Results: When the two groups were compared, both groups reduced OCD symptoms. However, symptom reduction and remission were significantly higher in the MI+TM CBGT group. Positive outcomes were also maintained, with additional symptom reduction at the 3-month follow-up for the MI TM CBGT group. Conclusions: Adding two individual sessions of MI and TM before CBGT successfully reduced OCD symptoms and was more effective than using CBGT group alone.

Introduction: Extensive experimental studies and clinical evidence (Metabolic Efficiency with Ranzolazine for Less Ischemia in Non-ST-Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction-36 [MERLIN TIMI-36] trial) indicate potential antiarrhythmic efficacy of the antianginal agent ranolazine. Delivery of agents into the pericardial space allows high local concentrations to be maintained in close proximity to myocardial tissue while systemic effects are minimized. Methods and Results: The effects of intrapericardial (IPC) administration of ranolazine (50-mg bolus) on right atrial and right ventricular effective refractory periods (ERP), atrial fibrillation threshold, and ventricular fibrillation threshold were determined in 17 closed-chest anesthetized pigs. IPC ranolazine increased atrial ERP in a time-dependent manner from 129 +/- 5.14 to 186 +/- 9.78 ms (P < 0.01, N = 7) but did not significantly affect ventricular ERP (from 188.3 +/- 4.6 to 201 +/- 4.3 ms (NS, N = 6). IPC ranolazine increased atrial fibrillation threshold from 4.8 +/- 0.8 to 28 +/- 2.3 mA (P < 0.03, N = 6) and ventricular fibrillation threshold (from 24 +/- 3.56 baseline to 29.33 +/- 2.04 mA at 10-20 minutes, P < 0.03, N = 6). No significant change in mean arterial pressure was observed (from 92.8 +/- 7.1 to 74.8 +/- 7.5 mm Hg, P < 0.125, N = 5, at 7 minutes). Conclusions: IPC ranolazine exhibits striking atrial antiarrhythmic actions as evidenced by increases in refractoriness and in fibrillation inducibility without significantly altering mean arterial blood pressure. Ranolazine`s effects on the atria appear to be more potent than those on the ventricles.

Introduction: In vitro studies and ambulatory ECG recordings from the MERLIN TIMI-36 clinical trial suggest that the novel antianginal agent ranolazine may have the potential to suppress atrial arrhythmias. However, there are no reports of effects of ranolazine on atrial electrophysiologic properties in large intact animals. Methods and Results: In 12 closed-chest anesthetized pigs, effects of intravenous ranolazine (similar to 9 mu M plasma concentration) on multisite atrial effective refractory period (ERP), conduction time (CT), and duration and inducibility of atrial fibrillation (AF) initiated by intrapericardial acetylcholine were investigated. Ranolazine increased ERP by a median of 45 ms (interquartile range 29-50 ms; P < 0.05, n = 6) in right and left atria compared to control at pacing cycle length (PCL) of 400 ms. However, ERP increased by only 28 (24-34) ms in right ventricle (P < 0.01, n = 6). Ranolazine increased atrial CT from 89 (71-109) ms to 98 (86-121) ms (P = 0.04, n = 6) at PCL of 400 ms. Ranolazine decreased AF duration from 894 (811-1220) seconds to 621 (549-761) seconds (P = 0.03, n = 6). AF was reinducible in 1 of 6 animals after termination with ranolazine compared with all 6 animals during control period (P = 0.07). Dominant frequency (DF) of AF was reduced by ranolazine in left atrium from 11.7 (10.7-20.5) Hz to 7.6 (2.9-8.8) Hz (P = 0.02, n = 6). Conclusions: Ranolazine, at therapeutic doses, increased atrial ERP to greater extent than ventricular ERP and prolonged atrial CT in a frequency-dependent manner in the porcine heart. AF duration and DF were also reduced by ranolazine. Potential role of ranolazine in AF management merits further investigation. (J Cardiovasc Electrophysiol, Vol. 20, pp. 796-802, July 2009).

The P3(00) event-related potential (ERP) component is widely used as a measure of cognitive functioning and provides a sensitive electrophysiological index of the attentional and working memory demands of a task. This study investigated what proportion of the variance in the amplitude and latency of the P3, elicited in a delayed response working memory task, could be attributed to genetic factors. In 335 adolescent twin pairs and 48 siblings, the amplitude and latency of the P3 were examined at frontal, central, and parietal sites. Additive genetic factors accounted for 48% to 61% of the variance in P3 amplitude. Approximately one-third of the genetic variation at frontal sites was mediated by a common genetic factor that also influenced the genetic variation at parietal and central sites. Familial resemblance in P3 latency was due to genetic influence that accounted for 44% to 50% of the variance. Genetic covariance in P3 latency across sites was substantial, with a large part of the variance found at parietal, central, and frontal sites attributed to a common genetic factor. The findings provide further evidence that the P3 is a promising phenotype of neural activity of the brain and has the potential to be used in linkage and association analysis in the search for quantitative trait loci (QTLs) influencing cognition.

Current research reflects conflict regarding best practice in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The. present study reports on the psychological treatment of a 54-year-old woman diagnosed with OCD, and follows the implementation of pharmacological treatment. The study utilises both exposure and response prevention (ERP) and cognitive therapy (CT), although there was no attempt to compare these approaches in an experimental design. Measures of avoiding and neutralising behaviours were taken on three occasions across treatment. Measures were also taken of intrusive thoughts, appraisal of responsibility, and effective challenging, both across treatment and at follow-up. The results indicate that gains were made in addition to those reported following the implementation of medication. The results also suggest that the addition of CT to exposure and response prevention facilitates the extinction of neutralising behaviours.

There is, a widespread belief that the WTO has made virtually no concessions to environmentalists about their concerns arising from free trade and the process of globalization. There are concerns that these processes may undermine prospects for sustainable development. Following, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the International Institute for Sustainable Development was established to advocate policies to support sustainable development within Canada and globally. In 1994, it proposed the Winnipeg Principles as. a means for reconciling international trade and development so as to: achieve sustainable development (ISD, 1994a,b). These seven principles are outlined in this article and assessed:. Although the International Institute for Sustainable Development had hoped: through these principles to influence the work programme of the Environment and Trade Committee of WTO, it seems to have little effect. Probably if these principles had been seriously considered by WTO, the serious social conflicts which emerged globally at the beginning of this century would have been avoided, and we would be in a better position to understand the complex links between trade, environment and sustainable development and adopt relevant policies. Estrogen influences regional adipose tissue distribution and the accompanying cardiovascular disease risk. To elucidate the mechanisms of this link further, we assessed whether human preadipocytes (PAs) expressed estrogen receptors (ERs) and whether there were any regional or gender differences in ER complement. Human PAs expressed the ER alpha gene but not ERP by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, possessed ER alpha protein on Western blotting, and displayed specific 17 beta -estradiol (E-2) binding with calculated dissociation constants of 0.78 nM, 0.96 nM, and 1.19 nM and maximal binding capacities of 9.3 fmol/mg, 14.6 fmol/ mg, and 18.2 fmol/mg from three whole cell binding assays. There were no regional differences in ER alpha complement for males or females. There were no gender differences in ER alpha complement for subcutaneous or visceral samples. We conclude that ER alpha but not ERP is present in human PAs. This suggests that the effect of estrogen on adipose tissue deposition has a contribution from the direct effect of estrogen on human PAs via ER alpha.

This paper focusing on the Chinese manufacturing sector assesses the environmental impact of trade liberalization in China. The results show that China's experience with the trade liberalization-environment nexus is consistent with international evidence. On one hand, trade liberalization has had various positive effects on the environment. Firstly, it promoted specialization in areas of comparative advantage, which, in general, included industries that contributed less to environmental degradation. Secondly, it allowed China to access and adopt the best international practices in pollution abatement technology. Thirdly, it enabled China to transfer environmental costs to other countries by importing intermediate products whose production contributed to environmental degradation. On the other hand, these positive effects were overwhelmed by a negative scale effect, which was the result of a huge increase in the demand for Chinese exports. The paper concludes that if China is to prevent pollution from reaching a critical threshold, environmental regulations need to be tightened. O Jornalismo faz hoje parte de uma poderosa indústria de conteúdos. Integrando esse vasto mundo da comunicação, a informação compete com outros géneros discursivos – como o entretenimento, a publicidade ou o marketing – pela atenção e preferência das audiências. O Jornalismo tem revelado, neste processo, uma extraordinária capacidade de adaptação. Entre os primórdios da profissão e os múltiplos produtos prêt-à-porter que hoje são oferecidos, houve um desvirtuamento ou apenas uma evolução natural? Como se articula o ensino do jornalismo nas universidades com a prática efectiva das redacções? Este texto lança várias interrogações sobre o presente e o futuro do Jornalismo, a partir de um “momento de ouro” ou uma “oportunidade perdida” na sua istória: quando, em Chicago, nas primeiras décadas do século XIX, Jornalismo e Sociologia andaram quase de mãos dadas.
