Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) responses of NIMONIC PE-16 for various prior microstructures and strain amplitudes have been evaluated and the fatigue behavior has been explained in terms of the operative deformation mechanisms. Total strain-controlled LCF tests were performed at 923 K on samples possessing three different prior microstructures: alloy A in solution-annealed condition (free of γ′ and carbides), alloy B with double aging treatment (spherical γ′ of 18-nm diameter and M23C6), and alloy C with another double aging treatment (γ′ of size 35 nm, MC and M23C6). All three microstructures exhibited an intial cyclic hardening followed by a period of gradual softening at 923 K. Coffin-Manson plots describing the plastic strain amplitudevs number of reversals to failure showed that alloy A had maximum fatigue life while C showed the least. Alloy B exhibited a two-slope behavior in the Coffin-Manson plot over the strain amplitudes investigated. This has been ascribed to the change in the degree of homogeneity of deformation at high and low strain amplitudes. Transmission electron microscopic studies were carried out to characterize the various deformation mechanisms and precipitation reactions occurring during fatigue testign. Fresh precipitation of fine γ′ was confirmed by the development of “mottled contrast” in alloy C. Evidence for the shearing of the ordered γ′ precipitates was revealed by the presence of superdislocations in alloy C. Repeated shearing during cyclic loading led to the reduction in the size of the γ′ and consequent softening. Coarser γ′ precipitates were associated with Orowan loops. The observed fatigue behavior has been rationalized based on the micromechanisms stated above and on the degree of homogenization of slip assessed by slipband spacing measurements on tested samples.

Elasto-plastic response of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) follows closely the response of granular materials through pressure dependent (or normal stress) yield locus and shear stress induced material dilatation. On a micro-structural level, material dilatation is responsible for stress softening and formation of localized shear band, however its influence on the macro-scale flow and deformation is largely unknown. In this work, we systematically analyze the effect of material dilatation on the gross indentation response of Zr-based BMG via finite element simulation. The strengthening/softening effect on the load-depth response and corresponding stress-strain profiles are presented in light of differences in elastic-plastic regimes under common indenters. Through comparison with existing experimental results, we draw conclusions regarding selection of suitable dilatation parameters for accurately predicting the gross response of BMGs

The temperature ranges of thermal and athermal deformation behaviour of nickel are identified by employing the temperature-dependence of flow-stress and strain-rate cycling data. The results are used to present a unified view of dislocation mechanisms of glide encompassing the two thermally activated and the intermediate athermal regimes of plastic flow.In the low-temperature thermally activated region (<250 K) the strain rate is found to be controlled by the repulsive intersection of glide and forest dislocations, in accordance with current ideas. The athermal stress in this region can be attributed mainly to the presence of strong attractive junctions which are overcome by means of Orowan bowing, a small contribution also coming from the elastic interactions between dislocations. The values of activation area and activation energy obtained in the high-temperature region (> 750 K) negate the operation of a diffusion-controlled mechanism. Instead, the data support a thermal activation model involving unzipping of the attractive junctions. The internal (long-range) stress contribution here results solely from the elastic interactions between dislocations. This view concerning the high-temperature plastic flow is further supported by the observation that the Cottrell–Stokes law is obeyed over large strains in the range 750–1200 K.

In order to understand the influence of ductile metal interlayer on the overall deformation behavior of metal/nitride multilayer, different configurations of metal and nitride layers were deposited and tested under indentation loading. To provide insight into the trends in deformation with multilayer spacings, an FEM model with elastic-perfect plastic metal layers alternate with an elastic nitride on top of an elastic-plastic substrate. The strong strain mismatch between the metal and nitride layers significantly alters the stress field under contact loading leading to micro-cracking in the nitride, large tensile stresses immediately below the contact, and a transition from columnar sliding in thin metal films to a more uniform bending and microcracking in thicker coatings.

We investigate the possibility of projecting low-dimensional chaos from spatiotemporal dynamics of a model for a kind of plastic instability observed under constant strain rate deformation conditions. We first discuss the relationship between the spatiotemporal patterns of the model reflected in the nature of dislocation bands and the nature of stress serrations. We show that at low applied strain rates, there is a one-to-one correspondence with the randomly nucleated isolated bursts of mobile dislocation density and the stress drops. We then show that the model equations are spatiotemporally chaotic by demonstrating the number of positive Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov dimension scale with the system size at low and high strain rates. Using a modified algorithm for calculating correlation dimension density, we show that the stress-strain signals at low applied strain rates corresponding to spatially uncorrelated dislocation bands exhibit features of low-dimensional chaos. This is made quantitative by demonstrating that the model equations can be approximately reduced to space-independent model equations for the average dislocation densities, which is known to be low-dimensionally chaotic. However, the scaling regime for the correlation dimension shrinks with increasing applied strain rate due to increasing propensity for propagation of the dislocation bands.

The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of plastic anisotropy and evolution in crystallographic texture with deformation on the ductile fracture behaviour of polycrystalline solids. To this end, numerical simulations of multiple void growth and interaction ahead of a notch tip are performed under mode I, plane strain, small scale yielding conditions using two approaches. The first approach is based on the Hill yield theory, while the second employs crystal plasticity constitutive equations and a Taylor-type homogenization in order to represent the ductile polycrystalline solid. The initial textures pertaining to continuous cast Al-Mg AA5754 sheets in recrystallized and cold rolled conditions are considered. The former is nearly-isotropic, while the latter displays pronounced anisotropy. The results indicate distinct changes in texture in the ligaments bridging the voids ahead of the notch tip with increase in load level which gives rise to retardation in porosity evolution and increase in tearing resistance for both materials.

This work is a continuation of our efforts to quantify the irregular scalar stress signals from the Ananthakrishna model for the Portevin-Le Chatelier instability observed under constant strain rate deformation conditions. Stress related to the spatial average of the dislocation activity is a dynamical variable that also determines the time evolution of dislocation densities. We carry out detailed investigations on the nature of spatiotemporal patterns of the model realized in the form of different types of dislocation bands seen in the entire instability domain and establish their connection to the nature of stress serrations. We then characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of the model equations by computing the Lyapunov dimension as a function of the drive parameter. The latter scales with the system size only for low strain rates, where isolated dislocation bands are seen, and at high strain rates, where fully propagating bands are seen. At intermediate applied strain rates corresponding to the partially propagating bands, the Lyapunov dimension exhibits two distinct slopes, one for small system sizes and another for large. This feature is rationalized by demonstrating that the spatiotemporal patterns for small system sizes are altered from the partially propagating band types to isolated burst type. This in turn allows us to reconfirm that low-dimensional chaos is projected from the stress signals as long as there is a one-to-one correspondence between the bursts of dislocation bands and the stress drops. We then show that the stress signals in the regime of partially to fully propagative bands have features of extensive chaos by calculating the correlation dimension density. We also show that the correlation dimension density also depends on the system size. A number of issues related to the system size dependence of the Lyapunov dimension density and the correlation dimension density are discussed.

Plastic heterogeneity in indentation is fundamental for understanding mechanics of hardness testing and impression-based deformation processing methods. The heterogeneous deformation underlying plane-strain indentation was investigated in plastic loading of copper by a flat punch. Deformation parameters were measured, in situ, by tracking the motion of asperities in high-speed optical imaging. These measurements were coupled with multi-scale analyses of strength, microstructure and crystallographic texture in the vicinity of the indentation. Self-consistency is demonstrated in description of the deformation field using the in situ mechanics-based measurements and post-mortem materials characterization. Salient features of the punch indentation process elucidated include, among others, the presence of a dead-metal zone underneath the indenter, regions of intense strain rate (e. g. slip lines) and extent of the plastic flow field. Perhaps more intriguing are the transitions between shear-type and compression-type deformation modes over the indentation region that were quantified by the high-resolution crystallographic texture measurements. The evolution of the field concomitant to the progress of indentation is discussed and primary differences between the mechanics of indentation for a rigid perfectly plastic material and a strain-hardening material are described.

An AlCrCuNiFeCo high entropy alloy (HEA), which has simple face centered cubic (FCC) and body centered cubic (BCC) solid solution phases as the microstructural constituents, was processed and its high temperature deformation behaviour was examined as a function of temperature (700-1030 degrees C) and strain rate (10(-3)-10(-1) s(-1)), so as to identify the optimum thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) conditions for hot working of this alloy. For this purpose, power dissipation efficiency and deformation instability maps utilizing that the dynamic materials model pioneered by Prasad and co-workers have been generated and examined. Various deformation mechanisms, which operate in different temperature-strain rate regimes, were identified with the aid of the maps and complementary microstructural analysis of the deformed specimens. Results indicate two distinct deformation domains within the range of experimental conditions examined, with the combination of 1000 degrees C/10(-3) s(-1) and 1030 degrees C/10(-2) s(-1) being the optimum for hot working. Flow instabilities associated with adiabatic shear banding, or localized plastic flow, and or cracking were found for 700-730 degrees C/10(-3)-10(-1) s(-1) and 750-860 degrees C/10(-1.4)-10(-1) s(-1) combinations. A constitutive equation that describes the flow stress of AlCrCuNiFeCo alloy as a function of strain rate and deformation temperature was also determined. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The nanoindentation technique was employed to examine the strain rate sensitivity, m, and its dependence on the structural state of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG). The free volume content in the BMG was varied by examining samples in the as-cast (AC), shot-peened (SP), and structurally relaxed (SR) states. Hardness values measured at different loading rates and over a temperature range of 300-423 K as well as the strain-rate jump tests conducted in the quasi-static regime at room temperature, show that m is always negative. All the load-displacement (P-h) curves in this temperature regime exhibit serrated load-displacement responses, indicating that the shear band mediated inhomogeneous plastic flow governs deformation. Such localization of flow and associated softening is the raison d'etre for the negative m. Significant levels of pile-up around the indents were also noted. The order in the average values of hardness, pile-up heights, and the displacement bursts on the P-h curves was always such that SR > AC > SP, which is also the order of increasing free volume content. These observations were utilized to discuss the reasons for the negative strain rate sensitivity, and its dependence on the structural state of metallic glasses. It is suggested that the positive values of m reported in the literature for them are possibly experimental artefacts that arise due to large pile ups around the indents which lead to erroneous estimation in hardness values. An equiatomic NiTiCuFe multi-component alloy with simple body-centered cubic (bcc) and face-centered cubic solid-solution phases in the microstructure was processed by vacuum induction melting furnace under dynamic Ar atmosphere. High-temperature uniaxial compression experiments were conducted on it in the temperature range of 1073 K to 1303 K (800 degrees C to 1030 degrees C) and strain rate range of 10(-3) to 10(-1) s(-1). The data generated were analyzed with the aid of the dynamic materials model through which power dissipation efficiency and instability maps were generated so as to identify the governing deformation mechanisms that are operative in different temperature-strain rate regimes with the aid of complementary microstructural analysis of the deformed specimens. Results indicate that the stable domain for the high temperature deformation of the multi-component alloy occurs in the temperature range of 1173 K to 1303 K (900 degrees C to 1030 degrees C) and (epsilon) over dot range of 10(-3) to 10(-1.2) s(-1), and the deformation is unstable at T = 1073 K to 1153 K (800 degrees C to 880 degrees C) and (epsilon) over dot = 10(-3) to 10(-1.4) s(-1) as well as T = 1223 K to 1293 K (950 degrees C to 1020 degrees C) and (epsilon) over dot = 10(-1.4) to 10(-1) s(-1), with adiabatic shear banding, localized plastic flow, or cracking being the unstable mechanisms. A constitutive equation that describes the flow stress of NiTiCuFe multi-component alloy as a function of strain rate and deformation temperature was also determined. A micromechanical approach is considered here to predict the deformation behaviour of Rheocast A356 (Al-Si-Mg) alloy. Two representative volume elements (RVEs) are modelled in the finite element (FE) framework. Two dimensional approximated microstructures are generated assuming elliptic grains, based on the grain size, shape factor and area fraction of the primary Al phase of the said alloy at different processing condition. Plastic instability is shown using stress and strain distribution between the Al rich primary and Si rich eutectic phases under different boundary conditions. Boundary conditions are applied on the approximated RVEs in such a manner, so that they represent the real life situation depending on their position on a cylindrical tensile test sample. FE analysis is carried out using commercial finite element code ABAQUS without specifying any damage or failure criteria. Micro-level in-homogeneity leads to incompatible deformation between the constituent phases of the rheocast alloy and steers plastic strain localisation. Plastic stain localised regions within the RVEs are predicted as the favourable sites for void nucleation. Subsequent growth of nucleated voids leads to final failure of the materials under investigation.

An experimental study of plane strain wedge indentation of a model porous brittle solid has been made to understand the effect of indentation parameters on the evolution of the deformation field and the accompanying volume change. A series of high-speed, high-resolution images of the indentation region and simultaneous measurements of load response were captured through the progression of the indentation process. Particle image velocimetry analysis of the images facilitated in situ measurement of the evolution of the resulting plastic zone in terms of incremental material displacement (velocity), strain rate, strain and volume change (e.g., local pore collapse). These measurements revealed initiation and propagation of flow localizations and fractures, as well as enabled estimate of volume changes occurring in the deformation zone. The results were directly compared with theoretical estimates of indentation pressure and deformation zone geometry and were used to validate a modified cavity expansion solution that incorporates effects of volume changes in the plastic zone. Using in situ, high-speed imaging of a hard wedge sliding against pure aluminum, and image analysis by particle image velocimetry, the deformation field in sliding is mapped at high resolution. This model system is representative of asperity contacts on engineered surfaces and die-workpiece contacts in deformation and machining processes. It is shown that large, uniform plastic strains of 1-5 can be imposed at the Al surface, up to depths of 500 mu m, under suitable sliding conditions. The spatial strain and strain rate distributions are significantly influenced by the initial deformation state of the Al, e.g., extent of work hardening, and sliding incidence angle. Uniform straining occurs only under conditions of steady laminar flow in the metal. Large pre-strains and higher sliding angles promote breakdown in laminar flow due to surface fold formation or flow localization in the form of shear bands, thus imposing limits on uniform straining by sliding. Avoidance of unsteady sliding conditions, and selection of parameters like sliding angle, thus provides a way to control the deformation field. Key characteristics of the sliding deformation such as strain and strain rate, laminar flow, folding and prow formation are well predicted by finite element simulation. The deformation field provides a quantitative basis for interpreting wear particle formation. Implications for engineering functionally graded surfaces, sliding wear and ductile failure in metals are discussed.

By making use of the evolution equation of the damage field as derived from the statistical mesoscopic damage theory, we have preliminarily examined the inhomogeneous damage field in an elastic-plastic model under constant-velocity tension. Three types of deformation and damage field evolution are presented. The influence of the plastic matrix is examined. It seems that matrix plasticity may defer the failure due to damage evolution. A criterion for damage localization is consistent with the numerical results.
