Thin films of barium strontium titanate (BST) including BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 end members were deposited using the metallo-organic decomposition (MOD) technique. Processing parameters such as nonstoichiometry, annealing temperature and time, film thickness and doping concentration were correlated with the structural and electrical properties of the films. A random polycrystalline structure was observed for all MOD films under the processing conditions in this study. The microstructures of the films showed multi-grains structure through the film thickness. A dielectric constant of 563 was observed for (Ba0.7Sr0.3)TiO3 films rapid thermal annealed at 750 degrees C for 60 s. The dielectric constant increased with annealing temperature and film thickness, while the dielectric constant could reach the bulk values for thicknesses as thin as similar to 0.3 mu m. Nonstoichiometry and doping in the films resulted in a lowering of the dielectric constant. For near-stoichiometric films, a small dielectric dispersion obeying the Curie-von Schweidler type dielectric response was observed. This behavior may be attributed to the presence of the high density of disordered grain boundaries. All MOD processed films showed trap-distributed space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) behavior with slope of similar to 7.5-10 regardless of the chemistry and processing parameter due to the presence of main boundaries through the film thickness. The grain boundaries masked the effect of donor-doping, so that all films showed distributed-trap SCLC behavior without discrete-traps. Donor-doping could significantly improve the time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior of BST thin films, mostly likely due to the lower oxygen vacancy concentration resulted from donor-doping. From the results of charge storage density, leakage current and time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior, BST thin films are found to be promising candidates for 64 and 256Mb ULSI DRAM applications. We study linear and nonlinear optical properties of two push-pull polyenes stacked in head to head (HtH) and head to tail (HtT) configurations, at different stacking angles within the Pariser-Parr-Pople model using exact diagonalization method. By varying the stacking angle between the polyenes, we find that the optical gap varies marginally, but transition dipoles show large variations. We find that the dominant first-order hyperpolarizability component beta(XXX) for HtH arrangement and beta(YYY) for HtT arrangement strongly depend on the distance of separation between molecules, while the other smaller component beta(XYY) for HtH arrangement and beta(XXY) for HtT arrangement) does not show this variation with distance. We find that the beta(XXX) for HtH configuration shows a maximum at an angle away from 0, in contrast with the oriented gas model. This angle varies with distance between the polyenes, and at large distance it falls to 0. The ratio of all components of beta of a dimer to monomer is less than two for HtH configuration for all angles. But for HtT configurations the ratio of the dominant beta component is greater than two at large angles. Our ZINDO study on two monomers (4-hydroxy-4'-nitroazobenzene) connected in a nonconjugative fashion shows a linear increase in vertical bar(beta) over right arrow (av)vertical bar without much red shift in optical gap. There is a linear increase in vertical bar(beta) over right arrow (av)vertical bar with increase in number of monomers connected nonconjugatively without resulting in a red shift in optical gap.

We report an anomalous magnetostriction behavior of the charge ordered compound Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3. We have found that the applied magnetic field not only gives rise to a large negative magnetoresistance but also produces a huge positive magnetovolume effect. This unusual effect is explained considering that the applied magnetic field induces a structural transition at which the volume drastically increases. This effect is also seen in the anisotropic magnetostriction which shows clear anomalies at the field induced transition.

This paper presents an assessment of the flexural behavior of 15 fully/partially prestressed high strength concrete beams containing steel fibers investigated using three-dimensional nonlinear finite elemental analysis. The experimental results consisted of eight fully and seven partially prestressed beams, which were designed to be flexure dominant in the absence of fibers. The main parameters varied in the tests were: the levels of prestressing force (i.e, in partially prestressed beams 50% of the prestress was reduced with the introduction of two high strength deformed bars instead), fiber volume fractions (0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%), fiber location (full depth and partial depth over full length and half the depth over the shear span only). A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted using ANSYS 5.5 [Theory Reference Manual. In: Kohnke P, editor. Elements Reference Manual. 8th ed. September 1998] general purpose finite element software to study the flexural behavior of both fully and partially prestressed fiber reinforced concrete beams. Influence of fibers on the concrete failure surface and stress-strain response of high strength concrete and the nonlinear stress-strain curves of prestressing wire and deformed bar were considered in the present analysis. In the finite element model. tension stiffening and bond slip between concrete and reinforcement (fibers., prestressing wire, and conventional reinforcing steel bar) have also been considered explicitly. The fraction of the entire volume of the fiber present along the longitudinal axis of the prestressed beams alone has been modeled explicitly as it is expected that these fibers would contribute to the mobilization of forces required to sustain the applied loads across the crack interfaces through their bridging action. A comparison of results from both tests and analysis on all 15 specimens confirm that, inclusion of fibers over a partial depth in the tensile side of the prestressed flexural structural members was economical and led to considerable cost saving without sacrificing on the desired performance. However. beams having fibers over half the depth in only the shear span, did not show any increase in the ultimate load or deformational characteristics when compared to plain concrete beams. Glass nanocomposites in the system (100 - x)Li2B4O7-xSrBi(2)Ta(2)O(9) (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 22.5, in molar ratio) were fabricated via a melt quenching technique followed by controlled heat-treatment. The as-quenched samples were confirmed to be glassy and amorphous by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques, respectively. The phase formation and crystallite size of the heat-treated samples (glass nanocomposites) were monitored by XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The relative permittivities (epsilon(tau)') of the glass nanocomposites for different compositions were found to lie in between that of the parent host glass (Li2B4O7) and strontium bismuth tantalate (SBT) ceramic in the frequency range 100 Hz-40 MHz at 300 K, whereas the dielectric loss (D) of the glass nanocomposite was less than that of both the parent phases. Among the various dielectric models employed to predict the effective relative permittivity of the glass nanocomposite, the one obtained using the Maxwell's model was in good agreement with the experimentally observed value. Impedance analysis was employed to rationalize the electrical behavior of the glasses and glass nanocomposites. The pyroelectric response of the glasses and glass nanocomposites was monitored as a function of temperature and the pyroelectric coefficient for glass and glass nanocomposite (x = 20) at 300 K were 27 muC m(-2) K-1 and 53 muC m(-2) K-1, respectively. The ferroelectric behavior of these glass nanocomposites was established by P vs. E hysteresis loop studies. The remnant polarization (P-r) of the glass nanocomposite increases with increase in SBT content. The coercive field (E-c) and P-r for the glass nanocomposite (x = 20) were 727 V cm(-1) and 0.527 muC cm(-2), respectively. The optical transmission properties of these glass nanocomposites were found to be composition dependent. The refractive index (n = 1.722), optical polarizability (am = 1.266 6 10 23 cm 3) and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (x(3) = 3.046 6 10(-21) cm(3)) of the glass nanocomposite (x = 15) were larger than those of the as-quenched glass. Second harmonic generation (SHG) was observed in transparent glass nanocomposites and the d(eff) for the glass nanocomposite (x = 20) was found to be 0.373 pm V-1.

Copper(l) complexes of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) with a stoichiometry Cu-2(dppe)(3)(X)(2) [X- = CN- (1), SCN- (2), NO3- (3)] are obtained from direct reactions of CuX and dppe. The complexes are structurally and spectroscopically (NMR and IR) characterized. The structure of the [Cu-2(dPPe)(3)](2+) dication is similar to the structural motif observed in many other complexes with a chelating dppe and a bridging dppe connecting two copper centers. In complexes 1 -3, the anions are confined to the cavity formed by the phosphines which force a monodentate coordination mode despite the predominant bidentate/bridging character of the anions. The coordination angles rather than the thermochemical radii dictate the steric requirement of anions. While the solution behavior of 3, with nitrate, is similar to complexes studied earlier, complexes with pseudohalides exhibit new solution behavior. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Isothermal sections of the phase diagrams for the systems Ln-Pd-O (Ln = lanthanide element) at 1223 K indicate the presence of two inter-oxide compounds Ln(4)PdO(7) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, three compounds Ln(4)PdO(7), Ln(2)PdO(4) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = Eu, Gd and only one compound of Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = Tb to Ho. The lattice parameters of the compounds Ln(4)PdO(7), Ln(2)PdO(4) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) show systematic nonlinear variation with atomic number. The unit cell volumes decrease with increasing atomic number. The standard Gibbs energies, enthalpies and entropies of formation of the ternary oxides from their component binary oxides (Ln(2)O(3) and PdO) have been measured recently using an advanced version of the solid-state electrochemical cell. The Gibbs energies and enthalpies of formation become less negative with increasing atomic number of Ln. For all the three compounds, the variation in Gibbs energy and enthalpy of formation with atomic number is markedly non-linear. The decrease in stability with atomic number is most pronounced for Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5), followed by Ln(4)PdO(7) and Ln(2)PdO(4). This is probably related to the repulsion between Pd2+ ions on the opposite phases Of O-8 cubes in Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5), and the presence of Ln-filled O-8 cubes that share three faces with each other in Ln4PdO7. The values for entropy of formation of all the ternary oxides from their component binary oxides are relatively small. Although the entropies of formation show some scatter, the average value for Ln = La, Pr, Nd is more negative than the average value for the other lanthanide elements. From this difference, an average value for the structure transformation entropy of Ln(2)O(3) from C-type to A-type is estimated as 0.87 J.mol(-1).K-1. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of these ternary oxides from elements at 1223 K are presented as a function of lanthanide atomic number. By invoking the Neumann-Kopp rule for heat capacity, thermodynamic properties of the inter-oxide compounds at 298.15 K are estimated. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A series of high-martensite dual-phase (HMDP) steels exhibiting a 0.3 to 0.8 volume fraction of martensite (V m ), produced by intermediate quenching (IQ) of a vanadium and boron-containing microalloyed steel, have been studied for toughness and fatigue behavior to supplement the contents of a recent report by the present authors on the unusual tensile behavior of these steels. The studies included assessment of the quasi-static and dynamic fracture toughness and fatigue-crack growth (FCG) behavior of the developed steels. The experimental results show that the quasi-static fracturetoughness (K ICV ) increases with increasing V m in the range between V m =0.3 and 0.6 and then decreases, whereas the dynamic fracture-toughness parameters (K ID , K D , and J ID ) exhibit a significant increase in their magnitudes for steels containing 0.45 to 0.60 V m before achieving a saturation plateau. Both the quasi-static and dynamic fracture-toughness values exhibit the best range of toughnesses for specimens containing approximately equal amounts of precipitate-free ferrite and martensite in a refined microstructural state. The magnitudes of the fatigue threshold in HMDP steels, for V m between 0.55 and 0.60, appear to be superior to those of structural steels of a similar strength level. The Paris-law exponents (m) for the developed HMDP steels increase with increasing V m , with an attendant decrease in the pre-exponential factor (C).

The aim of this paper is to investigate the steady state response of beams under the action of random support motions. The study is of relevance in the context of earthquake response of extended land based structures such as pipelines and long span bridges, and, secondary systems such as piping networks in nuclear power plant installations. The following complicating features are accounted for in the response analysis: (a) differential support motions: this is characterized in terms of cross power spectral density functions associated with distinct support motions, (b) nonlinear support conditions, and (c) stochastically inhomogeneous stiffness and mass variations of the beam structure; questions on non-Gaussian models for these variations are considered. The method of stochastic finite elements is combined with equivalent linearization technique and Monte Carlo simulations to obtain response moments.

In this paper a new parallel algorithm for nonlinear transient dynamic analysis of large structures has been presented. An unconditionally stable Newmark-beta method (constant average acceleration technique) has been employed for time integration. The proposed parallel algorithm has been devised within the broad framework of domain decomposition techniques. However, unlike most of the existing parallel algorithms (devised for structural dynamic applications) which are basically derived using nonoverlapped domains, the proposed algorithm uses overlapped domains. The parallel overlapped domain decomposition algorithm proposed in this paper has been formulated by splitting the mass, damping and stiffness matrices arises out of finite element discretisation of a given structure. A predictor-corrector scheme has been formulated for iteratively improving the solution in each step. A computer program based on the proposed algorithm has been developed and implemented with message passing interface as software development environment. PARAM-10000 MIMD parallel computer has been used to evaluate the performances. Numerical experiments have been conducted to validate as well as to evaluate the performance of the proposed parallel algorithm. Comparisons have been made with the conventional nonoverlapped domain decomposition algorithms. Numerical studies indicate that the proposed algorithm is superior in performance to the conventional domain decomposition algorithms. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report our studies of the linear and nonlinear rheology of aqueous solutions of the surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium tosylate (CTAT) with varying amounts of sodium chloride (NaCl). The CTAT concentration is fixed at 42 mM, and the salt concentration is varied between 0 and 120 mM. On increasing the salt (NaCl) concentration, we see three distinct regimes in the zero-shear viscosity and the high-frequency plateau modulus data. In regime 1, the zero-shear viscosity shows a weak increase with salt concentration due to enhanced micellar growth. The decrease in the zero-shear viscosities with salt concentration in regimes II and III can be explained in terms of intermicellar branching. The most intriguing feature of our data, however, is the anomalous behavior of the high-frequency plateau modulus in regime II (0.12 less than or equal to [NaCl]/[CTAT] less than or equal to 1.42). In this regime, the plateau modulus increases with an increase in NaCl concentration. This is highly interesting, since the correlation length of concentration fluctuations and hence the plateau modulus G(0) are not expected to change appreciably in the semidilute regime. We propose to explain the changes in regime II in terms of a possible unbinding of the organic counterions (tosylate) from the CTA(+) surfaces on the addition of NaCl. In the nonlinear flow curves of the samples with high salt content, significant deviations from the predictions of the Giesekus model for entangled micelles are observed.

We study the statistical properties of spatially averaged global injected power fluctuations for Taylor-Couette flow of a wormlike micellar gel formed by surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium tosylate. At sufficiently high Weissenberg numbers the shear rate, and hence the injected power p(t), at a constant applied stress shows large irregular fluctuations in time. The nature of the probability distribution function (PDF) of p(t) and the power-law decay of its power spectrum are very similar to that observed in recent studies of elastic turbulence for polymer solutions. Remarkably, these non-Gaussian PDFs can be well described by a universal, large deviation functional form given by the generalized Gumbel distribution observed in the context of spatially averaged global measures in diverse classes of highly correlated systems. We show by in situ rheology and polarized light scattering experiments that in the elastic turbulent regime the flow is spatially smooth but random in time, in agreement with a recent hypothesis for elastic turbulence.

This work intends to demonstrate the importance of geometrically nonlinear crosssectional analysis of certain composite beam-based four-bar mechanisms in predicting system dynamic characteristics. All component bars of the mechanism are made of fiber reinforced laminates and have thin rectangular cross-sections. They could, in general, be pre-twisted and/or possess initial curvature, either by design or by defect. They are linked to each other by means of revolute joints. We restrict ourselves to linear materials with small strains within each elastic body (beam). Each component of the mechanism is modeled as a beam based on geometrically nonlinear 3-D elasticity theory. The component problems are thus split into 2-D analyses of reference beam cross-sections and nonlinear 1-D analyses along the four beam reference curves. For thin rectangular cross-sections considered here, the 2-D cross-sectional nonlinearity is overwhelming. This can be perceived from the fact that such sections constitute a limiting case between thin-walled open and closed sections, thus inviting the nonlinear phenomena observed in both. The strong elastic couplings of anisotropic composite laminates complicate the model further. However, a powerful mathematical tool called the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) not only enables such a dimensional reduction, but also provides asymptotically correct analytical solutions to the nonlinear cross-sectional analysis. Such closed-form solutions are used here in conjunction with numerical techniques for the rest of the problem to predict multi-body dynamic responses, more quickly and accurately than would otherwise be possible. The analysis methodology can be viewed as a three-step procedure: First, the cross-sectional properties of each bar of the mechanism is determined analytically based on an asymptotic procedure, starting from Classical Laminated Shell Theory (CLST) and taking advantage of its thin strip geometry. Second, the dynamic response of the nonlinear, flexible fourbar mechanism is simulated by treating each bar as a 1-D beam, discretized using finite elements, and employing energy-preserving and -decaying time integration schemes for unconditional stability. Finally, local 3-D deformations and stresses in the entire system are recovered, based on the 1-D responses predicted in the previous step. With the model, tools and procedure in place, we shall attempt to identify and investigate a few problems where the cross-sectional nonlinearities are significant. This will be carried out by varying stacking sequences and material properties, and speculating on the dominating diagonal and coupling terms in the closed-form nonlinear beam stiffness matrix. Numerical examples will be presented and results from this analysis will be compared with those available in the literature, for linear cross-sectional analysis and isotropic materials as special cases.

TiO2 thin films were prepared by sol gel method. The structural investigations performed by means of X- ray diffraction (XRD) technique, Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) showed the shape structure at T=600°C. The optical constants of the deposited film were obtained from the analysis of the experimental recorded transmittance spectral data over the wavelengths range 200-3000 nm. The values of some important parameters (refractive index n, dielectric constant ε ∞ and thickness d), and the third order optical nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) of TiO2 film are determined from these spectra. It has been found that the dispersion data obey the single oscillator relation of the Wemple-DiDomenico model, from which the dispersion parameters and high – frequency dielectric constant were determined. The estimation of the corresponding band gap Eg , χ (3) and ε ∞ are 2.57 eV, 0.021 × 10-10 esu and 5.20,respectively.
